If you have to measure out a whole floor first do a walk around of the house to see if the house is completely square or if it has inlet or outlets.
take a picture with your phone or make a note that.
It may help clear up confusion later on.
When you enter the house try to find the largest square room.
The garage, living room or kitchen are usually the best place to start a sketch.
if you can find common walls that are flat this can be a great place to continue your sketch and ensure that you keep it accurate.
Try to do hallways last as your sketch might be less accurate because of any number of factors.
