I'm actually extremely irritated by the people complaining about Aaron's singing voice, because I feel like many of the commenters are blinded by bias. Yes, Aaron is no Adam, yes his voice is clear and doesn't have the raspy vibrato that Adam has doesn't mean he doesn't fit the role! A handful of people with voices that have more things in common with Aaron's than Adam's have played Roger, and not everyone is Adam Pascal. I'm even more surprised by the amount of people who are slamming his acting, as he is extremely talented and I can vibe with all emotions he portrays. Not meant to instigate, just expressing an opinion that happens to contradict many comments existing on this video.
Aaron is irritated because he's an ACTOR and it's ACTING. However, everytime I see him with that righteous fury look I just can't help thinking of Enjolras.
I actually really love them as Roger and Mimi - I think their chemistry is insane and yeah, they give a very different vibe to Roger and Mimi - they feel younger and angrier in this than in most versions, but I really do think it works. I'd love to hear what this cast's take on the show would be now, a few years on, on an actual stage and not a concert venue.
I think the problem with Vanessa's acting is she keeps looking to the audience for help, as if we should take her side and help convince Roger to leave. Like yes you're supposed to face the audience so they can see your face but not include them in the narrative. She barely sings to Roger at all, instead looking around her like she needs people to back her up. It doesn't even seem like she's trying to convince him but convince the audience. I commend her for trying a tough role but Mimi is a hard part and I just don't think she had the experience to pull it off. She did much better as Rizzo, a lot more mature too.
To be frank, the only song she didn't do justice was Out tonight. The rest were pretty good. And I don't understand why people keep hating on her for this. If she wasn't good or talented she wouldn't have been offered the role on Broadway before Hollywood Bowl, she wouldn't have been casted in this and now she wouldn't be getting ready to headline a workshop for a production that will hit Broadway this fall. People hate on her just because they want to hate. She is quite talented and people need to get their heads out of their asses and give Vanessa a chance. All of her latest works in film were quite critically acclaimed as well which proves that she DOES have talent
This is her best song in this and honestly i have no idea how she did it cause id barley be able to breathe much less sing, if i was in that such close proximity with aaron.
This one makes me giggle. While Aaron is yelling at Vanessa to get out she's just standing there like "Look how sexy I am". About half way through she gets angry, poor thing looked like she was still out of breath from "OUt Tonight". But she sounds really good on this song! And Aaron nailed everything about it fromt he annoyance to the little soft moments.
this scene was so poorly directed, holy smokes. aaron had his back to the audience wayyyy to . much, and vanessa clearly wasn't given any direction about gesturing/where to put her arms. those things are both the fault of the director, not the actors.
+Marley Green True, but a great director makes sure there's a good view no matter what seat you get. Every audience member deserves a great view. And while I would prefer Aaron to have opened up more to the audience, we DO get to see dat bootay ;) xD
Vanessa and Aaron are terrific in this song - their chemistry is strong they did this is only a few days - they are great together. Take this performance of Rent as it was meant to be - a great evening out to enjoy a fantastic score.
I have to say I really enjoy her portrayal of Mimi. She doesn't feel sorry for herself and doesn't let Roger reject her so soon. She honestly believes what she's saying. Most Mimi's I feel like don't do that.
The thing that bothers me about this scene is that Vanessa is just standing there looking awkward...after watching the movie and broadway versions, I know that she's suppose to interact with him to try to convince him to take her out...like in the first verse when Roger says "I should tell you I should tell you, I should tell you I should...no" she's suppose to touch him in some way that causes him to say no, she just looks very awkward standing there and she's fucking smiling...idk about y'all but I wouldn't smile if I was getting rejected, I'm not blaming anything on the actors, I blame the directors...on the bright side Vanessa actually sounds pretty good in this, I just came from the "Light My Candle" performance and after cringing from that, I'm pleasantly surprised by her voice in this
honestly, Vanessa wasn't THAT bad. i mean...she wasn't the best MiMi, but she looks the part & her singing wasn't terrible. i mean..."out tonight" was pretty terrible, but this was pretty good IMO.
And she's literally not even trying to go along with the storyline. She's smiling when this is suppose to be a heart wrenching song and she doesn't know how to act this way so she just flails her arms around and makes a confused look on her face.
I think Aaron made a great job playing Roger, he can transmit that damaged, fucked up and also desesperate side of him so well... and his looks... he's a God.
Have you heard Renee Elise Goldsberry and Will Chase? IMHO, I find that they're the best cast duo in Rent so far. Adam Pascall is hella good, he has a great voice, I'm not gonna lie, but Will Chase and Renee just have a lot more emotion in their singing than Adam and Rosario.
3htthexy I couldn't agree with you more! WILL CHASE AND RENEE GOLDSBERRY ARE DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE MIMI and ROGER. Though Adam is GREAT. I mean, the grit in his voice is undeniably amaaaaziiinnng! I LOOOVE WILL CHASE take as Roger though. His "leave me alone and don't mess with me" take on Roger is ABSOLUTELY MIND-BLOWINGLY BRILLIANT! His voice has can go as soothing and as husky as he wants which is why I'm drawn to Will's voice. I think Aaron did a great job as Roger, but for me, he lacked a certaim "rocker vibe" and leaned more on the "loner/emo" type of Roger but still believable. I guess, Will and Adam's angst as Roger just stuck with me and made ROGER, well, ROGER. As for Vanessa, she did okay, I guess her voice was just too high for Mimi. she did relatively well in the other songs (La Vie Boheme A, Light my candle, Another Day, I Should Tell You, Without You), her Out Tonight was alright in the beginning just reached pitchy parts towards the middle, guess it was because of the dancing? I dunno. her parts on Goodbye Love were not that good, maybe it's because she was crying while singing? but her take on Mimi wasn't as bad as many people would say. If people didn't know that she was the squeaky High School Musical Gabriella, people would say she did okay. But, WILL CHASE and RENEE GOLDSBERRY are still the BEST ROGER and Mimi for me. Their chemistry together just overflows everywhere and pierces the hearts of anyone who watches them!!!
koko steele I agree I love Will and René and also, Daphne Rubin-Vega's Mími brings out the best in Adam Pascal's Rodger. To me the rest of the Mímis and Rodgers, with some exceptions like the Korean version, are just meh.
,,,, daphne with adam was the best match dude??? have you seen their chemistry??? they are PERFECT and i met adam and mentioned daphne and he smiled so wide like theY were the actual otp. the OG cast was soOooOO good ugh
Nothing against Vanessa, because I sure as hell couldn't do that, but I wish they would have casted someone who could vocally keep up with Aaron. He is absolutely flawless.
As much as I love Aaron, appreciate how talented he is, and think he's incredible in Catch Me If You Can and Next To Normal, he sounds the same in whatever he does. There were bits and pieces of Roger voice here, but not sustained. He just sounded himself in Wicked too, which is unfortunate. His former co-star and buddy Norbert Leo Butz, I've never heard sound the same twice in any role. Totally agree with @Eve Flockhart on how distracting Aaron is in certain areas. I'm generally just kinda besotted with him. *Off to listen to CMIYC soundtrack...*
In the broadway version, Mimi always kind of smirks and smiles during Roger's lyrics like "haha seriously, Roger, lets just forget this shit and fuck" and not fully grasping his words, just trying to brush them off and get down to the sex. Because she's high. Vanessa's just bad at conveying that subtle and complex state.
Honestly people stop trashing her. Vanessa was young and she has come a.long way I bet if she did rent again she improved and also Vanessa was still young when she did this
i wonder how many people bashing her would sound that good if they tried to sing live in front of all those people ?! she doesn't sound bad , she sounds like she is singing live
I think this song is pretty good. Light My Candle wasn't very good, but I think Aaron got a hold of his voice and Vanessa controlled gets better than in Out Tonight. I like this.
I don't like either of them here. They just don't fit the roles. Sure, Aaron is the "pretty boy front man", but he is FAR better suited for Next To Normal or Catch Me If You Can... He just isn't edgy enough for Rodger. His voice is too Pop to be believable as a rock star. Vanessa has a good voice, but its too sweet. She has a Disney princess voice, not an edgy, heroin- addicted stripper's voice. She would do well in a more fantastical show, not something so grounded in harsh reality. Rosario Dawson and Will Chase are my absolute favorite Mimi and Roger (respectively, of course). They just embody those characters.
I think some people are overlooking the fact that Mimi is currently high in this version of the show. She snorted a line of coke during "Out Tonight" and while I don't think that means Vanessa's performance is great, people do need to realize it's not going to be like what they're used to.
Aaron's voice, his face, his ass...he's just perfect. I agree that Vanessa was not the best choice for MiMi but I have seen worse. And honestly she did better on this son than she did in some of the other numbers. She has potential but should she share the stage with amazing voices like that of Aaron and Skylar? No not in my opinion.
I think she did good. I mean, Out Tonight might not have been great because it's hard to dance and sing at once, but she has a great voice and she did this song really well.
She definitely looks the part. And she's a good actress. Her overall performance isnt too bad. Her vocals were slightly pitchy but I probably wouldn't do much better.
I don't understand all the hate on Vanessa. She's the only Mimi I've seen in any stage production of Rent who even passes for 19. Nobody's perfect, I think she did a good job as Mimi in this. NPH wouldn't have cast her if he didn't like her for it.
I know that some vocal teachers teach people especially girls with a smirk because it forces notes out more than without it. That's how I was taught, so it may not be her smirking in character. Its probably just because she wasn't trained on Broadway.
ugh I love Aaron Tveit but this was terrible casting there is absolutely no chemistry between them at all it feels so forced. Vanessa does sound good in this one. . . "DAMN IT R, I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR SEXUAL TENSION SHE'S IN MY APARTMENT AGAIN."
" Go away, I'm trying to plan my revolution! FRANCE BEFORE PANTS! "
"FOR GOD'S SAKE R"
Eugenia Oakenshield France before Pants is my new motto xD
I actually really love them as Roger and Mimi - I think their chemistry is insane and yeah, they give a very different vibe to Roger and Mimi - they feel younger and angrier in this than in most versions, but I really do think it works.

Because she's not very good here?
There are many things wrong with casting Vanessa. No one's being "overly critical".
i want to hear Adam Pascal and Aaron Tveit duetI don't even care what song, just imagine it...
+Vivian Minevamp (cepicgeekgirl) Me too! I would love that. Both of them have amazing voices and they would complement each other.
looks like Rizzo and Danny had a past....
golden xo
I'm actually imagining that he's Danny and Sandy's son, and she's Rizzo and Kenickie's daughter.
brch2 And they both have AIDS. Sucks for everyone. 😂
I love how he wipes off his face after she kisses him like "ew you contaminated my perfection"
yaylifeyay
lmao thanks xD and completely agreed on the subject of roger's true motives
This is her best song in this and honestly i have no idea how she did it cause id barley be able to breathe much less sing, if i was in that such close proximity with aaron.
Watching Aaron breathe is better than cable....
I think Vanessa is just... too adorable for Mimi
but i think she's perfect, physically. she's 19 who looks like 16.
Who else can totally see Enjolras in Aaron during this song?
+cgirltv I Can
+cgirltv ONE DAY MOOOOOOOOOOOOORE
Cassel Cepeda "ANOTHER DAY" ANOTHER DESTINY... Woah. CONNECTIONS!
HAHAHAHAHAHAH man. same.
Aaron Tveit: My Prince of Broadway ♥
I see you in everywhere xD
hahaahhahaahha xD, Greetings ;)
I think Vanessa wants to be a bird. Her arms keep flailing around. Madness
this scene was so poorly directed, holy smokes. aaron had his back to the audience wayyyy to . much, and vanessa clearly wasn't given any direction about gesturing/where to put her arms.
those things are both the fault of the director, not the actors.
it could also have to do with where in the audience the person recording this was sitting
+Katy Waggoner I think that you are the only one complaining about Aaron's back.
+Marley Green True, but a great director makes sure there's a good view no matter what seat you get. Every audience member deserves a great view. And while I would prefer Aaron to have opened up more to the audience, we DO get to see dat bootay ;) xD
Paul F. could be 'cause i'm super gay so it does nothing for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i'd rather see his expression. =p
Vanessa and Aaron are terrific in this song - their chemistry is strong they did this is only a few days - they are great together. Take this performance of Rent as it was meant to be - a great evening out to enjoy a fantastic score.
if somebody made an audio of aaron just saying "the fire's out anyway" I would listen to it all day
I have to say I really enjoy her portrayal of Mimi. She doesn't feel sorry for herself and doesn't let Roger reject her so soon. She honestly believes what she's saying. Most Mimi's I feel like don't do that.

i like her singing in this song. shes pretty good. but in her other songs (especially Out Tonight) she was bad.
Is it just me or does Vanessa's expressions of denial looks more like amusement rather than confusion or betrayal?
honestly, Vanessa wasn't THAT bad. i mean...she wasn't the best MiMi, but she looks the part & her singing wasn't terrible. i mean..."out tonight" was pretty terrible, but this was pretty good IMO.
Now we know that Tripp Vanderbilt had a shady past...
And she's literally not even trying to go along with the storyline. She's smiling when this is suppose to be a heart wrenching song and she doesn't know how to act this way so she just flails her arms around and makes a confused look on her face.
I melt every time Aaron sings...is just stands there for that matter
Aaron was perfection!! He's like a modern Roger, i love it!!
I have to give Vanessa Hudgens credit. I never thought a disney high school musical star would be so wonderful for this role.
Huh, the best Roger with the worst Mimi.
I think this is the best she did!
I think Aaron made a great job playing Roger, he can transmit that damaged, fucked up and also desesperate side of him so well... and his looks... he's a God.
Nobody can touch Rosario Dawson and Adam Pascal's version
Have you heard Renee Elise Goldsberry and Will Chase? IMHO, I find that they're the best cast duo in Rent so far. Adam Pascall is hella good, he has a great voice, I'm not gonna lie, but Will Chase and Renee just have a lot more emotion in their singing than Adam and Rosario.

,,,, daphne with adam was the best match dude??? have you seen their chemistry??? they are PERFECT and i met adam and mentioned daphne and he smiled so wide like theY were the actual otp. the OG cast was soOooOO good ugh
Aaron Tveit is my life ;)
Thanks, I appreciate it. I was freezing cold, jet lagged, running on zero sleep, and trying to figure out how to use a brand new camera.
Aaron Tveit was in a musical called Next to Normal, where there was a song called Just Another Day, and these are the lyrics to his part in it :)
every time i hear vanessa sing i picture Gabriella from high school musical her voice is too soft for mimi and I LOVE AARON!!
Vanessa did so much better in this song than in "Out Tonight".
Yea she was almost too sexy in Out Tonight
Fight me I like Will Chase best as Roger but I think Aaron Tveit does a really good job in this song.
I kinda love Aaron's pants. And he rocks them well. Hell, he could rock anything well. He's so hot! *swoon*
Last comment, I swear! Nut How GREAT was Aaron when he held Vanessa? OMG I DIE
She hit the note for "last". That's good enough for me.
Nothing against Vanessa, because I sure as hell couldn't do that, but I wish they would have casted someone who could vocally keep up with Aaron. He is absolutely flawless.
Omfg! Thank you soooo much for posting these Rent vids! Thankyouthankyouthankyou! Lol
That's my spot. She's in MY SPOT!!!
but i can't stop watching these Vids!!! #Renthollywoodbowl im obsessed!
To all the haters Aaron and Vanessa were awesome. You might not think they "fit" the role but they did and obviously the crowd thought so too.
best description of her voice ever. the guy is the amazing Aaron Tveit.
I kind of love you for being a Skylar Astin fan and for uploading this video so I guess the feeling's mutual.
*Off to listen to CMIYC soundtrack...*
i dont think vanessas that bad!! i think were just used to her being innocent gabreilla and not mimi i think shes doing well
I was thoroughly enjoying Aaron's perfection in complete bliss. And then Vanessa opened her mouth and a piece of me died inside.
Does anyone know where i can watch a full performance of rent with aaron tveit in it?
Had to watch this twice, the first time I was fixating on Aaron's perfect behind...
This totally just made my day.
Vanessa's slow part is awesome... Beautiful voiceee
I like this.
aaron is so talented.
Ladies and gentlemen, the super amazin Aaron Tveit. Making girls fall in love with him since 1983.
Rosario Dawson and Will Chase are my absolute favorite Mimi and Roger (respectively, of course). They just embody those characters.
Will Chase is good, but how can you prefer him over the original, Adam Pascal? He just IS Roger
Aaron and Vanessa were awesome. You might not think they "fit" the roles but they did and obviously the crowd thought so too.
Aaron Tveit is perfection
My only complaint is that, epic theatre conventions or not, they needed to hide her mic pack a little better.
its like the bubble gum Rent! :)
If you compare Vanessa with the film actress in their little solo... Vanessa lacks the gentleness Mimi has to have
She said "only this" instead of "only yes" sorry. Fanatic here.
Phans Child it's 'there's only us...only tonight'
Thank you. I'm pretty sure people are being hard on her because she's Vanessa Hudgens but she didn't do nearly as bad as a lot of people make it seem.
What the hell is up with the trumpets @ 2:20? It sounds like a marching band!
It's interesting to see Aaron in all the roles he's played. And by interesting, I mean impressive.
I think she did good. I mean, Out Tonight might not have been great because it's hard to dance and sing at once, but she has a great voice and she did this song really well.
Am I the only one who enjoys Aaron with tattoo's?
He's looking at the crowd like: "help me!!!"
I can't stop watching that kiss!
She definitely looks the part. And she's a good actress. Her overall performance isnt too bad. Her vocals were slightly pitchy but I probably wouldn't do much better.
Side Note...Vanessa sounds good when she's not moving around cuz Out Tonight...she did not vibrato at the end of any note. She's doing it here :)
@cmouse86 LOL the lyrics are "There's only this, only tonight" Check the script of the OBC or movie if you don't believe me
Excellent job Vanessa
I don't understand all the hate on Vanessa. She's the only Mimi I've seen in any stage production of Rent who even passes for 19. Nobody's perfect, I think she did a good job as Mimi in this. NPH wouldn't have cast her if he didn't like her for it.
I wish I could see a performance of Rent, it was touring last year but I had an exam the day after if was near us so couldn't go see it
Aaron.... those pants.....
I know that some vocal teachers teach people especially girls with a smirk because it forces notes out more than without it. That's how I was taught, so it may not be her smirking in character. Its probably just because she wasn't trained on Broadway.
My goodness! I couldn't even recognise Vanessa Hudgens as Mim! Wow! She's actually pretty good!
I don't know, but looks like she's lost or something like it.
Vanessa Hudgens voice is beautiful ! she rocks :D
ugh I love Aaron Tveit but this was terrible casting there is absolutely no chemistry between them at all it feels so forced. Vanessa does sound good in this one. . . I actually think she does have the chops for musical theatre, with some voice training and practice of course. In out tonight I think the choreography tuckered her out and that's why the singing was so weak.
was zac efron at this one ??
She just... stands there...
No professional cameras were allowed inside the Hollywood Bowl.
@soprano65656 I quite liked her, she was young and playful, exactly what the show needed... though i appreciate the way you worded what you had to say
I know! Rosario could have done it again, there are many Broadway stars that would be perfect!
Seriously...Vanessa is good. I don't really get why everyone is hating on her.
I really like her in this song.... The slow part she does it nice.... =)
I Loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Aaaron Tveit
This was so much better than her rendition of Out Tonight
JUST ANOTHER DAAAAAAAAY
FOR ANOTHER STOLEN HOOOUUUUR
WHEN THE WORLD WILL FEEL MY POWER AND OBEEEEEEYYYYYYY
...wait...
Ugh lyrics being messed up.
I didn't realize that was Vanessa until half way through.
