Four years after the critically lauded Eight Winds the Athens-based Sokratis Sinopolous Quartet returns with the aptly-named Metamodal. A unique band, the quartet subtly sifts a vast pool of influence, its music informed by the players’ experience of folk forms, Byzantine and classical music, and many modes of improvising. The combination of Sinopoulos’s lyra, with its yearning, ancient tones, and the sensitive, modern piano of Yann Keerim is particularly beguiling, and the group as a whole has made giant steps since its debut. Metamodal, featuring new pieces by Sokratis and a concluding collective improvisation, was recorded in July 2018 at Sierra Studios in Athens, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Wow I haven’t seen a video Sokratis since early 2000’s I wasn’t expecting to see him like this as a 20 years older man. It’s good to see and hear his lyra has aged as much as he has. I feel it gives a much deeper sound now.
Where are they from? Greece! Come sospettavo! Grandi! Awesome music... Very evocative... Makes me wonder about a far historical past.
Would love to see Sokratis Sinopoulos do an all-solo album overdubbing himself, like ECM classics like Rypdal's 'After The Rain', Abercrombie's 'Characters' and Towners 'Blue Sun', but it seems ECM doesn't do these types of overdubbed solo albums from their artists anymore, I have to wonder why.

Yes. This is the politiki lyra which was mostly played in Constantinople since the Byzantine empire. If you dig the tone of this, perhaps you should check the cretan lyra and the thracian lyra. All of them are played with the nails which gives them a certain sound.
