Thanks for watching!
“If you’re watching your own edit and your mind wanders…cut that thing down”
That is absolutely pristine advice not just for video edits, but anything creative.
As my former professor would say "know your scope". As in stay focused and stick to the assignment. You might have wonderful tangents that should be heard, but get the assignment done first I guess
I couldn't agree more strongly. That's some excellent advice.
The thing is, you leave in the silence and your thought pauses. I love that. Watching UA-camrs that talk fast and cut out all silence is exhausting.
Agreed. It feels much more genuine that the pauses for thought and real-time revisions are there to see.
Bang on. THAT right there is the most annoying “style” choice on youtube. It’s so annoying and yet so many content providers do it.
@@davek00I think/hope the more slow paced content content will get a revival again. But maybe I'm just old...
@@ogelsmogel I think this "caffeinated cutting" is just a fad that will die out (hopefully soon). Those uploaders probably think that they're being edgy, but it's not edgy if everyone is doing it. It's just annoying.
Well, usually their target audience has the same zoomer 'I need to consume all media at 1.5x speed' ADHD that they have.
I don't remember who said it, but a quote that is always stuck with me is "You don't go to a Schwarzenegger film looking for plot".
And yet the plot in Terminator is brilliant. The first Conan ain't so bad, either.
I shall contemplate this on the tree of woe!
you sure they didn't mean michael bay? :V
@@iota-09 It can apply to a lot of directors/actors/movies any more.
@@MartintheTinman Bubby go touch some grass.
Tested, please let Adam know we come here for his stories, pearls of wisdom, and his exceptional character.
We will pass that along, thank you!
He does
Some people can talk, some can't. It's that simple. Adam is a good talker. It's always nice to hear from people and how they work who truly love what they do.
Wrong I come for the build videos
I have been to a party of dentists and was amazed and delighted to listen to a great raconteur about dentistry(more about dentists and patients, but . . .)
I absolutely LOVE your take on Con Air, because that’s the disconnect I constantly have with people. Oh, the goofy cliché entertainment wasn’t fine art? Shocking!
I have no guilty pleasures. I feel no guilt about loving some terrible crap. What I find weird is when people love a crap thing but feel the need to justify it or insist that it's really good, honestly. It's ok. You can like things that are crap sometimes.
I am forever trying to enlighten people to the idea that it is perfectly fine and ok to like "bad" media and not like "good" media.
I am a game designer and I recognize that the Animal Crossing games are expertly crafted pieces of entertainment and I absolutely understand why so many people LOVE those games like their own children, but my god I cannot stand them. Yet there will always be a special place in my heart for Dirty Harry on the NES and my god it's one of the worst games ever made lol
MAYBE the experience of going to a movie or playing a game is ENTIRELY subjective. MAYBE your opinions are 100% unique to YOU, and nobody else's nevermind.
AND MAYBE we (audience) should stop listening to opinionated morons because they have expensive clothes and get PAID by certain media producers and production companies to blather on and on about "high" or "low" quality entertainment... what constitutes it... how to rate it... where to find it... or what it looks, sounds, smells, or tastes like.
I rather enjoy sauteed onions and chopped jalapenos in my mac-n-cheese... a dash of cumin... and garlic. It's not a flavor profile that suits everybody... AND that's okay. It's why I make the stuff in a small saucepot that serves ME... AND there are 7 or 8 BILLION people with varying tastes in the world. I don't have to agree with even a majority of them. They can go find their own recipe for mac-n-cheese. ;o)
Some people are just snobs and think they're somehow superior because they can look down on something.
I watch Tested's content to hear Adam talk, both when he is only talking/answering questions and when he is working on something. There's a treasure trove of knowledge in his head and if I can learn one tiny thing from that man every day, then I'm golden.
Protect him at all costs.
"Protect him at all cost" I just said that on my post..lol
Clearly you're doing it wrong, Adam per his own words, keeps UA-cam on mute....
I don't i watch for build videos. If i wanted talking i would listen to a podcast
It would be helpful if whoever manages the UA-cam vids could timestamp/segment the video by the questions. Helps tremendously when trying to find specific questions Adam answers.
Ooh that's a good idea
JUST guessing by the title of the video, the same video I clicked on for likely the same reason... THAT suggestion would entirely defeat the purpose of generating views and engagement time. It IS the last question being answered. Timestamping would only encourage you to watch about the last 2 minutes, and move on. ;o)
Kills watch time which is important unfortunately.
I'm so happy someone else loves Con Air as much as I do! I also love The Fugitive, amazing movies
As a fan of the TV series, I also loved the movie and still do. Marshal Gerard's "I don't care!" will always be one of the best lines in movie history. But the whole movie is fun. Very much under appreciated.
The Fugitive is great for sure, but my supreme guilty pleasure is its "sequel" US Marshalls. I just love Tommy Lee Jones so much.
@@stacyswirl I almost listed that one too, it's great
The older I’ve gotten, and the more people I’ve interacted with, I’ve found that everyone has had interesting things happen to them, and stories they can tell. It sometimes is difficult to bring those stories out of them. This is a skill great interviewers have, and the rest of us sometimes do by accident. So make the most of whatever career you end up in, and I’m sure you will have stories to tell.
Soooo agree with you at 3:25-4:00! After 35 years of searching for what I was meant to do, I stumbled into a job in US DoD Electronic Commerce (electronic & on-line invoicing & later goods/services receipt & contracting) which connected with me on a deeply emotional level. Until then, I was terrified of giving speaches, but I spent the next 15+ years traveling the continental US & comfortably speaking to groups of dozens to hundreds of people because I was so engaged in what I was promoting. No outlet to tell stories about it it now, but it was a great run while it lasted.
When I was a kid I pretended you were my dad.
Mine wasn't in my life till I was 18 .
I appreciate you for more things than you are aware of.
I'd always wanted to shake you hand and tell you thank you for everything .tho youd never know what I was talking about . But thank you for everything sir.
You made my childhood tolerable in most cases.
The wisdom I have gotten and continue to receive from Adam, is invaluable. You have had a tremendous part in me unlearning feeling embarrassed by my easily excited and empathetic self (I'm sure others can relate). If I could achieve 1% of the impact you have by means of candidly sharing my experiences, I'll have lived a fulfilling life. Cheers and thanks.
Enthusiasm permission machine - I like that. I find that this is often a roll of sharing confidence. I'm someone who is pretty confident in what I do. I confidently know what I'm good at, and I also confidently know what I could get better at, and don't mind failing. I find many folks struggle with that and exactly what you're talking about is often sharing that confidence with others. "That's awesome, try it! If you fail, we can try again/fix it together!"
This also falls in with being an anti-gatekeeper, which I've heard you talk about many times.
What I love about your videos - differing from many on UA-cam - is that you show the thought, mistakes, wrong turns. Many just show a slick, perfect build which does not show how things are really done.
Most UA-camrs need a lot of help with audio. I go from a video where I have to have the sound turned all the way up and still barely understand what is being said to a video that I have to reduce the volume to maybe 10% and it's still a bit loud and back to an inaudible one all the time. Audio checks people! Listen to your videos before posting them. Note your level settings so you can return to them reliably.
Definitely the story teller! I would give up so much. And don’t be offended by this Adam. For you to have been my grandfather. Man you just tell stories so amazingly fun and exciting! Even if it’s about a sad horrible event. You turn it into a learning lesson. And your voice crackles with positive energy! Much love to all you!
Adam is the guy that talks to you about one topic (makers) but it comes with such wisdom (freelance is looking for your next 9 to 5 or doing rideshare) that you pull so much more from it.
Like really protect Adam at all cost
Re: the UA-cam repeating thing. I try not to repeat myself if I've done it in a previous video, I'll must briefly mention and link it in. But it's really hard to do that so I often I'll just repeat by way of a hopefully short summary for those who haven't or don't want to watch my other video that goes into more detail.
A UA-camr that cops a LOT of flack for repeating stuff is Thunderf00t. But I understand how a new viewer might only watch just that one video, so you want to feel to need to inform them as best and completely as you can in that chance you get.
I also want to say that this is not the first time he's answered this question in this way on this channel. So Kudos on him to not say "I answered this particular question about not answering repeat questions in a previous video." It's a piece of advice I've been renting for a while that I got from him a while ago, but also good on him for repeating it as if it was his first time tossing out that tidbit.
I think that mentality, to need to fully and completely inform them in the one chance you'll get, wreaks dude. It's sad for whomever feels valued so little. It's also exemplary of this modern "attention economy". It's not your duty to inform everyone you pass on the street, nor is it your duty to inform everyone as much as possible about your thoughts or ideas from your social media account. Touch grass and tell your friends about how dewey and green it looked, and how it smelled!
Bloody hell, I had no idea Thunderf00t was still going. Haven't seen that name for nearly 15 years.
I was about to say that the way to have a career with interesting stories is to make sure you take jobs where you work with interesting people. But then I realized that it is really to find out what is interesting about your co-workers in any job and celebrate those things. When you’re working with people who feel comfortable being the interesting people they are, you’ll end up with lots of interesting stories.
I have worked as pasteup artist, display, theatre props, foundry work, antique restoration and high end furniture. I feel like Adam ... in that I love engaging folk about making things and the people I have met during my career. Turning 60 soon, I want to make more of what I find interesting. I find people engaging and wonderful to interact with, but I am now that old man ... paradigms have shifted ... so watching your videos and other youtube makers makes me think I should do my own. Thank you Savage Industries for the great content 😀🖖❤
Thank you Adam for your words of wisdom. In a way you've answered a lot of questions for me without directly addressing and answering my specific questions. ...Aaand that probably only made sense to me, but still, Thank you.
I get all riled up when Adam says "we'll put a link in the description". There's never a link...
EEVblog, Watch Wes Work, Adam ... All my favorite UA-camrs in one spot. I think I'll play the lottery tomorrow.
I work and have worked with some incredible engineers over the years, and I often hear them repeat the same stories and anecdotes in different company. To me, it is a repeat story, but to the audience, it may be the first time they have heard these. It used to frustrate me to listen to the same story over and over and over. But then I changed my perspective. I considered that whatever event they are talking about had such a profound impact on their life and career, that they feel it is important to share it far and wide with whomever will listen to it. Instead of being frustrated or shutting it out, I now listen with as much intent and interest as the new audience, knowing that this knowledge and wisdom may save my bacon at 2AM at some remote site...or even prevent me from being in that situation in the first place.
Referring to old videos... seriously never even considered that. Makes complete sense. Thank you for this!
Cutting out what I find boring, but "others will need" also... quite literally blew my mind. It's such an OBVIOUS thing, but have not considered it but only a handful of times in my over 10 years of creating on UA-cam... damn do I feel dumb right now😅
Everyone has interesting things in their lives. Storytelling is about finding the common in the extraordinary. Adam tells really relatable stories about his life, a life most of us will never experience, but makes the story about the common experiences we all have. When he talks about his experience building the display for the store in San Francisco and all the frustration he went through, I can think of experiences I have had where I was not able to meet expectations and got frustrated. That makes the experience common, but the delivery gives a different perspective. Makes it easier to relate and learn.
Great talk! I make thing for my Garden Railroad and have a UA-cam channel about Garden Railroad projects. I am not as fast a talker as you, however I am as enthusiastic as you. Love your advice about cutting out what I get lost on.
"I watch a lot of things on mute" as I sit here playing this in the background while I work. I find I listen to Adam talk and give advice way more useful than watching the builds. The builds are absolutely great but I tend to use them more when I need to see how a particular thing came about or feeling like appreciating the art of it.
I try to get to the point in my videos. In my mind, I’m instructing our sons and grandkids on how we are building things. And explain enough so that they can do it on their own. If other folks like it too, then that’s great!
I get annoyed by youtubers who drag out their videos, meandering around and talking about unimportant stuff, intentionally leaving the juicy important stuff right at the end.
"Find your enthusiasm" might be good on a tee-shirt or perhaps career advice. Also, once you found your enthusiasm, don't dangle it around so others can cut you off from it. That's how you loose your way......
Being a bus driver is definitely a career where you'll never be short of interesting stories to tell. Here's one: I was not in service, so not picking up passengers, and driving down a 4-lane road. This woman who insisted she must ride this bus stood in the road (with a baby stroller), hoping to force me to stop. I moved to the left lane, then she moved to the left lane (with her stroller).
I said to myself, "It should be illegal for someone that stupid to have a baby."
I stopped, then blew the horn repeatedly.
She then walked to the door expecting me to open it.
I got in the incoming lane and went around her.
Your job isn't over when you're out of service because you still have to watch out for crazy people like that.
As a fellow man named Adam, I absolutely love you, Mr. Adam Savage! I have been following your career for years, long before "following" became a thing in pop culture. You are the kind of fella that I could see you and myself hanging out have a drink, and discussing the next insane project with. Keep up the good work and content, Sir.
Adam thank you for 4:30-5:34 those are some of the most profound words I have heard anyone say! It came at a time when I really need to hear that. Thank you my friend. Love and peace
I really love Tenet. It's ambitious and a lot of fun to just sit and enjoy.
It's one of the best Nolan films for me.
His videos remind me of 10 years ago. When UA-cam was more about what made you happy and not what restricted you, within reason of what was moral of
course.
Your memory is remarkable! I wish I was able to remember so much of what I've seen, heard, and experienced in my life.
I love Tenet, and I'm eagerly waiting for a version with audio that I can hear.
Yes! This comment. Exactly the issue I had with it and why I couldn't get through it.
Turn the volume up ha ha.
@@adib396 I rewatched it with subtitles on, and still couldn't fully understand it! lol
I just re-edited a section of video that I did yesterday because I was kinda on the fence about it and the re-edited section is way better than the first edit for the exact reason Adam explained.
Great advice, a UA-cam coach I listened to recently said he would do up to 3 hours of filming and cut it down to half an hour. It's difficult to do but in the end the video is better for it! :-)
Quite the plug for a fellow Canadian ,Ted Woodford ....as a Guitar Aficionado I love both your channels Adam & Ted .
Adam loves his channel!
One can find stories or even help create stories in almost any situation. It helps when you have enthusiasm or excitement in a job, but you need to keep your eyes open and look for those opportunities or situations that may have a good twist or unnoticed side to them. Comedians do it all the time.
If there are people around, then there is probably something interesting worth noting - if you aren't afraid to poke a bit.
I loved the "I don't know if it's the career or the story-teller"!
😀😁😂🤣
Yep. Why not both?
You nailed it about the self-review of your own videos/recordings, if you don't find a section interesting your audience isn't going to appreciate the filler material much better.
I make comparison, how-to, and restoration update videos on UA-cam about one very specific typeof car and even though my production value is very poor my content is so high people who never had an interest in my cars come back just because they're fun or fun+informative watches. And it's all because I simply make what I want to see, and hardly anyone gets it, they all just want to show miliseconds of a final product or stuff it full of filler to look bigger than it is. Any fool can do it right, all you need to do is care about what you show, any of my stuff I could watch/listen to all the time and still feel like 15 minutes flashed in 10 seconds!
On the assumption that the question as posed in the description is addressed to us viewers, let me say that the biggest mistake YT hosts make is this: Putting in music during the narration. Calling it background music doesn't absolve them of the mistake. The fact that we can hear the music while they are talking and explaining and doing whatever they are doing gets in the way. Do I listen to the music or the narration? So, unless you are putting together a music video or dance video, I would say, Do not put any music in the video while you are talking. And just because there's like 2 seconds of no talking, but there is something happening, don't be tempted to fill the quiet with a 2-second music bite. And just think, you get to save all that time that you used to waste adding music to your narration of whatever. Thank you.
Agreed. The music tenders the narration inaudiable
Biggest mistake.. too much and/or too loud music. This Old Tony puts on a masterclass on commentary as do others like Frank Makes and Diresta. Adam is just delightful to listen to him ramble on in his excitement with whatever he is working on. And then there's Jamie . . .
The bit with another interesting career immediately reminded me of Doug Drexler, from some comic store to an Oscar-winning makeup artist to one of the people carrying the torch for modern Star Trek, even designing an official Enterprise.
Number one thing that youtubers do that I hate is long winded intros. I've seen some channels babble on for 10+ minutes before getting to the point. Well, I usually scan through the timeline until I find the spot where they finally start the actual video.
3:18 Adam's answer is better than any essay I have ever wrote!
Glad to find another person who loves Tenet as well. It has its flaws for sure, but it is such an intriguing and exciting world and concept. And Branaugh's performance is absolutely masterful.
1) Promoting a product from a scam company (not causing Adam of this, but a shocking number of UA-camrs just accept sponsorships from anyone)
It's like when someone on Reddit starts off a comment with "I've posted this before, but...". Like OK, I've totally read all of your comments.
Thanks!
Thank YOU! Very kind!
Talking of films where you might go in expecting something completely different, Dusk Till Dawn. I went in expecting vampires my friend was expecting something completely different, at the point where the vampires final show up we both looked at each other, me going "finally!!!" and them "what???"
Tenet isn't confusing, it's *nonsensical*. There's a huge difference between those two words.
Man Tenet is such a good movie, breaks my heart to hear of people not liking it. I will be the first to admit, it takes a couple viewings to really get whats happening, but when you do it is terrific!
To the story thing, I think there's also an element of allowing yourself to get into situations that you can tell stories about. I don't mean like dangerous situations, but there's only so many stories you can tell about times when you were sitting in your basement. If you want a life full of interesting stories, you need to be in interesting situations with interesting people.
Of course, interesting is in the eye of the storyteller I suppose, but nonetheless at least some form of situation and/or people must be present
Amen brother, I have been creating my entire life. Only working office gigs for short projects here and there. I can't imagine living any other way honestly. Love the content, live the content, and it creates itself. Peace and love and save the bees 🐝
As an example of the storyteller over the career: James Butler on UA-cam talking about running a septic company.
You know what I hate about Tennet? The audio levels. Maybe I could figure out the plot if I wasn't constantly meeting with the volume buttons.
title question is at 5:37 ...
Those asking questions should presume that hundreds of others have asked the same thing before.
Tenet is more idea than story, but the ideas are pretty cool.
Thanks for all you share Adam and the TESTED team
I'll only watch when Adam is on.
Always great content here as a huge fan of your creativity this is why I took my UA-cam channel seriously many thanks 👍
My Dad worked as a special effects artists/sculptor on the second Matrix movie. He made the body moulds for Neo and Trinity. You two are very similar in some ways.
My biggest issue with UA-camrs is some take forever with preamble and self promoting before they get to the point. I'm also not going to watch a video essay they did that's 30+ minutes that can be summed up in about 10. Some just get too into showing off their cleverness with their writing.
I immediately jump a few minutes into just about any youtube video I watch because I know it's just babble. Get to the point!
Also allowing sponsorships from scam companies
I **LOOOVE** _TENET!!_ I watched it three times in two days, because I so deeply enjoyed my time within the world of _Tenet._ I want it to go on for five hours. I want a quadrilogy.
But it's so excellent as it is, I wouldn't change a thing.
Something about it reminded me of... a vibe, I guess; of something I found very enjoyable in films like _Looper,_ _Inception_ (obviously), and a few others I'm not remembering at the moment. I love it!
UA-camrs think they are the end all be all. They don’t realize that they are often incorrect in their assessments
Man watching this channel is like digging for gold. Just nuggets everywhere.
7:44 - This advice is also excellent for writing
This feels like one that I should keep coming back to. Some of this works as really good life advice.
This video makes me want to see Adam at a DnD table GMed by Brennan Lee Mulligan. I think they would feed off each other's energy so potently, the internet would be talking about it for years to come.
I watched Bladerunner with my family one year. We went for dinner then dug a movie out of the discount bin at walmart. Everyone hated the movie but me as usual lol!
Also watch Blade Runner 2049
I personally rate movies on a 2 axis system. There's Good Bad and Fun Not Fun.
Shindler's List: Really really good. Not at all Fun.
Con Air: Lots of fun, not really any good.
Star Wars A New Hope: Good and Fun.
A movie doesn't always have to be both.
great promo for the Aussie drink brand. I'm sure Bundaberg would be happy...
Pulp Fiction is a perfect film because literally every line of dialog ties into something that will show up at some point.
I’m with you Adam. Nothing worse than a long intro to a video. I clicked on the video. You don’t have to sell me on your idea or topic let’s get to the build or subject matter.
Joe vs the Volcano, Hudson Hawk, and George of the Jungle (movie) are my guilty pleasures. And a bunch of 80's schlocky fantasy films (Krull, etc., etc)
I'm not sure why, but my Mother loved Joe vs the Volcano as a Christmas afternoon movie. Mom passed away a number of years ago and I still pull out JvV on Christmas, along with my favorite Better Off Dead.
@@JerryB507 I want my $2 !!
Thank you for sharing a delightful memory
_Pacific Rim_ It's the perfect distillation of its type. Shame they never made a sequel.
Lol, 6:59 Adam says people should talk less in videos and he watches thing so mute. I'm over here the exact opposite. I mostly watch Adam's talky videos on tested and I'm just listening in my headphones doing something else most of the time. Keep the talky videos coming! :)
I love Adam getting excited about things. Having depression and anxiety, it’s hard for me to get excited (especially of late). But watching Adam, it makes me want to get out there and participate and meet people.
The comment Adam makes about the UA-camr mistake - the same is definitely true for academics too. People will often cite their old papers for an explanation of some method they used or something, which is fine and proper. But at least give enough of an explanation in *this* paper that someone can keep reading and understand without having to go digging for that cited paper first. Especially true since journals are usually behind paywalls, so the reader might not have access to the older paper unless they work for a university or research institution that will subscribe to the journals on their behalf (and even then it's hit-and-miss).
Going your whole life, trying every occupation from A to Z, and never finding anything that gets your juices flowing - that's a frustrating life.
I love Tenet as well and know many people who find it over complicated but like many many of Christopher Nolan's movie I find something deep about the film everytime I rewatch them.
I love hearing these insights. To me, Adam some times sounds like he had at least 10 lifetimes in one. He transpires wisdom everywhere.
Here is where Adam diverges from the rest of us. For the average content creator, the content is why they are here, effectively why they exist as a thing you can watch. The content is indistinguishable from them. For Adam, who has done a lot of things, this channel is merely an outlet to talk about them, about things people want to know, or whatever Adam wants to share, a project, a prop, etc. If you took away from Adam all the other things, M5, Mythbusters, Skywalker Ranch, combat robots, etc etc and all he had left for relevance was this channel content, he too would be referencing other videos he had done. Because that content is all there is, for all practical purposes. Fortunately, Adam has done all those other things a lot of people find interesting and fortunately for all of us, Adam enjoys talking about them. Most people don't have that to work with. All they have is what they have created and posted, so it is entirely understandable to me if they are inward-looking and self-referential. It is not a flaw. It is simply how "normal" people are, and by that I mean people who do not have a household name and adoring fans around the world. Neither is wrong in any way. They are just very different realities that have both found an outlet making videos. And both can find an audience.
I agree, I think you're spot on in your theory of why - but I don't really think that matters. In a context of being interesting, building engagement, creating a story around something - there is absolutely a balance between assuming context is known, and building the foundation in the video (or essay, as Adam also refers to). Theres a whole range of narrative tools in your toolchest, that you use to make the story or "make" or whatever it is, interesting/engaging, and Adams personal opinion was obviously at this moment in time that some UA-camrs should make less explicit references to other videos. That could be by posting links in the description as he said, or I think it could be building context knowledge right there in the video. If it's something you learned on another project - refer to it as your knowledge. You learned that fair and square and it's yours to own, you don't need to let the previous video own it. It ties into the other question. To me it ties into the other question wrt storytelling and carreer choice. Its not necessarily the carreer, it's the storyteller. (this is not black or white of course) Be engaging, be passionate about what you're doing/presenting etc, and show reflection of yourself and what you're doing, I think those are great advice - not only for video producers but for life tbh!
Carreer that can tell stories: Mining, military, teaching
People are so interesting, one can find story-worthy moments in ANY career. Example: I worked as a paper pusher in a medical office. A co-worker once cautioned me against going too near to a clump of bushes and weeds in the parking lot ... because it was infested with rat eggs. Voila! Story to tell.
I almost couldn't focus with the bed head. But you were right about your movie recommendations!
Interestingly, I often find myself fast forwarding through the time lapse/montage portions of a video to the next place where the creator is talking to me.
I'm also one who agrees with your take on Tenet. I love that movie more than I would like to admit despite it's flaws and complexity. And totally agree with you 100% that the movie's prologue is the best action sequence Nolan has ever crafted, I literally have an adrenaline rush during the part where the protagonist starts running and the beat drops, never gets old even 3 years later!
The problem I have with Tenet isn't it's coplexity, nor the individual parts of the movie. The problem I have is the fact that it's a collection of movie making/intelectual exercises that at no point feels like anyone connected to that movie thought to make a good movie. It's simply not good as a whole.
Adam should do a side series on film reviews - that would be interesting
Con Air is a film I enjoy. I try to go into media with no expectations. That way I'm less likely to be disappointed. It doesn't help if someone asks if it's good because my enjoyment is higher priority over something being good. I might not know if it's good but I'll know if I like it.
As for talking about something in past video, I think it's ok if they have an in depth video on something and they refer back to it when it would provide more information or context for the video than is required. For example, if they're making a mould for something, they don't need to explain what mould types there are and how they work for the video, but if they have a video with that information then it might be interesting to the viewer.
You have to separate yourself from your own work. Don't get so caught up in what you're putting together that you don't think to look at it with fresh eyes as your audience would. Be humble and be honest with yourself that not everything to put into a video, or how you've edited it, is the greatest.
This reminds me of something: I think ALL live streamers blab on and on about the troubles of being a streamer. The audience generally doesn't and shouldn't care as it isn't applicable to their lives. Its a lot more derailing than hearing about old videos at least.
Biggest mistake i see any social media is only replying to trolled comments, does my head in, like the other 99% of comments are pure praise, but you only highlight that 1% negative comment, you have to go in knowing some just wont like you no matter what you do or say, and they will tell you that lol
Agreed. Also UA-cam has moderation tools, use them! Creators whine about trolls using foul language then they don't use the filtering system UA-cam gives you. It's like, dude, you're creating you're own idiotic problem.
The number one thing I see other people who watch movies doing that I don't like, they will not let a single film stand or fail on it's own. There are movies that are worse when you compare them to other movies, but if those other movies did not exist, or you didn't see them, then you would actually like that movie. I am a much happier person because I will enjoy a movie that others say sucks, simply because I can let it stand on it's own. This being said, I added Tenet to my will watch list and I will let it stand or fail on it's own.
Excellent advice, Adam, as usual. And I so agree with Raiders as a perfect movie.
I wonder if Tenet would make a good rpg ?
also, "The Rock", "ConAir", and "Armageddon" are some of my faves too.
special mentions: "Gone in 60 Seconds"
an option that Creators can take, to "let them do both", is to have a second Channel. that lets you specifically cater towards those that would want as much detail about a subject as possible, while keeping a more reasonable length option that just covers everything that's critical in atleast some capacity.
ofcourse, two Channels only because UA-cam will penalize you if some of your Uploads do very poorly, and... having extreme detail extras would do exactly that. if a Platform were to work a different way, then all on one Channel would be fine.
