    I've made 3 recipes of yours so far (because i suck at baking and i don't want to ruin a nice recipe) i followed this recipe and i cannot believe how amazing this is! I made it with no sugar and it's natural sweetness is incredible. Loved it!!! I'll recommend it 💓

    If I really want to bring this applesauce on a new level, I would caramelize the sugar first before adding the apples.
    Your Bold Basics are really incredible. My favorite is your homemade puff pastry!

    It’s interesting to read in some of the comments that applesauce isn’t readily available in other countries. I live in the Midwest part of the US and applesauce is stocked in every grocery store. But I bet your homemade applesauce tastes much better. I will give this recipe a try. I can’t wait to check out your other videos too.

    There are some apple types that are better than others for making apple sauce in my opinion. They get soft more easily and don't need any mixing. I love when the apple sauce still has some parts in it :).
    I agree that applesauce is good basic cooking. Not hard at all and a great addition to a meal!

    Do you think it's best to peel the apples? Will leaving the skin in place bring any negatives? Another great episode, Gemma. By the way, you know you're a success when viewers ask you to do future recipes.

    • @sarahr.1076
      @sarahr.1076 8 років тому

      In my opinion, if the apples are nice, you can leave the skin on (just cut away the ugly parts). You just end up with a little more bits to chew afterwards.

    This is great! I've seen recipes that sometimes use applesauce instead of butter, does it actually work well? (Also what would make a good substitute for butter in baking in general?)

    • @ohleander02
      @ohleander02 8 років тому +4

      Yeah, it pretty much works. If you're using it to substitute for butter or eggs though, I actually don't recommend adding the sugar when you're cooking it down. If you're just eating it, then I'd recommend adding the sugar and maybe some cinnamon or something.
      A good substitute for butter is any flavourless oil, or melted coconut oil works really well too. Softened shortening can be used in a pinch, or melted, but for flavour I don't recommend it. Applesauce is a good substitute [for butter] as well, but whatever you're baking will turn out more moist and a bit denser. Just fyi.
      Other good butter substitutions are: avocado and greek yogurt. Sour cream works too in a pinch, depending on the recipe (so, only in some recipes).

    • @AbigailP701
      @AbigailP701 8 років тому +4

      For butter you can use oil and greek yogurt. When it comes to eggs you can use applesauce, oil (1/4 cup of oil equals one egg), buttermilk or yogurt. One thing I say not to substitute an egg with applesauce for is cookies. Your cookies will turn out hard and won't bake as well, I tried it once and they weren't good. You can use applesauce in brownies and cakes, but not cookies.

      Here’s the egg substitute chart with guidance for different types of recipes: www.biggerbolderbaking.com/egg-substitutes-for-baking/. Egg substitutes won’t work well in custard type recipes or recipes which call for separating egg whites and yolk especially whipping up either or both. When you whisk eggs with other ingredients together, lots of air is incorporated into protein whose structure can hold air and help the baked goods rise. Egg substitutes don't have this feature.
      **Flax eggs work closest to eggs in many recipes.

    Can i use an actual blender to blend the soft apples?

    • @Msliliheart
      @Msliliheart 8 років тому +1

      F I think so. Since after the simmer, the apple is very soft and can easily be broke apart with only a fork. So i think blenders will work.

    • @user-kh9ki3kq8m

      It will depend on the recipe really. It is not a straight forward substitution

    Hey Gemma I was hoping you could help me. My mom is going to make a turkey for thanksgiving in a baking bag. Do you have any ways that we could do this? By the way I love your work I have tried a few of your recipes and hope to try many more! Thank you for you time! 😁😍

    Can this be stored in the fridge/freezer?

    • @biggerbolderbaking
      @biggerbolderbaking  5 років тому

      Yes, absolutely. Store your Homemade Applesauce in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Also, it freezes really well. You can freeze it in labeled ziplock bags or even in ice cube trays. I find it really helpful to have for baking emergencies or even to serve with pork for dinner. The sweet puree compliments pork really well.

    The new house I moved into has a big apple tree in the front yard. Im the family cook so Im commissioned to figure out recipes for the apples we are getting which is lot, almost like drowning in apples due to the tree.. My 3 yr old sister loves picking the apples and sitting in our living room eating them like crazy 😂

      Thank you for sharing, Loretta. The good thing about apples is you can do so many things with them, pies, applesauce or apple filling that you can store in jars.

    Do the apples have to be fresh? I have some that're looking a bit jaded and I'm wondering if they'd be alright.

    • @biggerbolderbaking
      @biggerbolderbaking  8 років тому +1

      Yes! but if the if the apples are tired, then the result will be tired! rock them up with a little lemon juice, that will brighten the taste :)
