  • Ever since we decided to cycle across the US we knew that crossing Texas would be a daunting and challenging part of our journey. And especially in the weeks leading up to the border to Texas we were getting more and more nervous about our upcoming endeavor.
    We really didn’t know what to expect and were a bit intimidated & demotivated by what we had heard and read. But what awaited us in Texas really blew us away!
    We met some of the most open-minded, travelled and generous people of our trip so far here, had great laughs, some agony and truly unique experiences. Even the vast emptiness everyone had “warned” us about turned out to be a refreshing change to the urban areas we’d experienced before.
    Once again, this was an important reminder for us not to judge a place without having been there...

    I'm glad you found the real Texas.
    I hope Texas people treated you as kindly as the people in Ansbach treated me for 2½ years in the 60s.

    I discovered your channel a week ago and now I'm backtracking to watch from the beginning and I'm REALLY enjoying these videos and super impressed with how you keep going. I love seeing the world from this perspective but the thing I really enjoy most is when you encounter warm, generous people. It restores my faith in humanity!

    Fantastic shots, gotta say your camera work is absolutely stellar. We're Americans and we've never chosen to tour in many of the places you guys are riding for various reasons, but your videos are making us reconsider our decision to avoiding touring in some of these places! We hope you guys are enjoying the desert southwest, we lived in Moab for the three years before heading out on our trip and Utah/New Mexico/Arizona/Nevada have a special place in our hearts.

      Thank you so much! 😊 For us the US has been (and still is) a really interesting experience, not just from a cycling point of view, but in general, as essentially every impression we get here is a new one.
      If we were to just look at the cycling aspect though, there would be some sections, especially further east, that we wouldn’t do again. Starting in Louisiana / Texas, the landscape has gotten a lot nicer (and different), making the cycling more interesting as well. 😅
      I guess what we’re trying to say is that you may perceive cycling here differently to us, if you already know all these impressions / places from before. 😅

    I could imagine traveling by bicycle. I would love too. But I would need enough money to stay in hotels and eat mostly at restaurants. I couldn’t handle the camping and camp cooking. You two are very admirable. Still, I don’t admire you less for the occasional motel stop. Stay healthy.

      I've bicycle toured both ways and yeah, hotels are much nicer. I did it in Japan mostly so I would have a secure place for my stuff and could get clean and could explore the city. In 6 weeks I camped only 3 times.😂 Expensive though, but it was worth every penny. My Japan trip would have been very different if I spent every evening sitting in a tent and not out exploring the cities I was in.

There's people who've lost their lives and to me is it worth? It maybe and maybe not but I do like your videos just be really careful and always use a mirror like you have. In the US, if you camp out of sight of the road for just one night, you’ll get away with it 99+% of the time.

      Yup. When I bicycle tour, I always rough camp for free. I NEVER camp in a park, out in the open nor near any homeless people. The only time I ever was approached by police was on Navajo Reservation in AZ. He was real cool , gave me his card & said to call him if I ever had any problems while riding thru the Reservation. It was a big Reservation. Took a couple days to get thru it.

      Yea, got it all sorted out quickly in Roswell. We also didn’t expect it to fail that quickly but apparently 5000 kms for a “not so high end” BB isn’t unusual... according to the bike mechanic and google 😅

      @@louisaandtobi We've had good luck with our old fashioned square taper bottom brackets, Shimano UN55. We avoided the external cup style because despite the lighter weight, they seem to fail much faster. 14,000kms on our square tapers so far and they are still smooth and noise free. Hope your new BB holds out much longer than the previous one!

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  2 роки тому

      Yea, Louisa has the Hollowtech and that’s holding up fine so far.

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  2 роки тому

      We would have also assumed that a “basic” square taper easily lasts 10000+ kms... we’ll see how long this new one now lasts and if it fails again so quickly we’ll probably upgrade it to Hollowtech II.

    You are the second person I know that had the bottom bracket broken. I lost my bottom bracket in the Chaco desert in Argentina and had to hitchhike and wobble and push my bike for 450 km until the first bike shop, where I barely escape of losing my frame!. I guess is one of the worst things that can happen with the bike!

    The last two falls seasons I`ve spent time cycling 9 Countrys of Europe . Loved it and have done some of your section in your videos . Alp Adria , Dolomites through Cortina Amprezza , Kotor Serpentine I `m wishing you the best and feel sorry for you having to experience our horrible biking infrastructure .I would have suggested Pacific North West ,New England states And the Appalachians back roads .Enjoy stay safe.

    Do not camp in the city parks , they are regularly policed. If you camp a short distance off any rural road , almost anywhere in the USA , in a clump of trees , out of sight behind a boulder , just about anywhere in a quiet non visible spot (from the road) for just one night ------- there is almost zero chance of being bothered by anyone.Just do not make the camp permanent , get in to your tent just as darkness falls , get up and out right after sunrise , and don't build a fire.This advice is for when you are in rural America ----- not the cities. Also , if your from Europe , the local police will almost always give you a pass ------ it is not worth their time to arrest or fine you because they know you are not going to be around to pay the fine. Just understand the police in America are mostly glorified revenue collectors for their municipalities . If there is no money to be made from you for the city they work for , they will just not bother fining or booking you. They only hassle local people for monetary reason . A European in the states for 90 days , they will just leave alone 99.999% of the time.

    I got in the habit of sleeping under the stars when I couldn't find suitable camping. Obviously only acceptable when not expecting rain, but I found if I lay myself and my bike down behind a bush I could sleep right in the open and not be seen like I would even hidden in a tent. I slept in the middle of a town in a graveyard next to a 2 foot high rock wall one night. Always woke at first light and could be on the road in only a couple of minutes. I'd eat breakfast a few kms down the road.
