- A few days after crossing the border to Ecuador, a massive landslide on the E45 highway towards Quito made our jaws drop. Not only at the scale of the destruction, but also because we couldn’t understand how we had come to be in a situation where we would have to take a 260 km detour!
...to make matters worse, we only had eight days left to reach Quito, in order to catch our flight to the Galápagos Islands.
But after coming to terms with the circumstances, we actually had a pretty nice time taking a detour deep through the Amazon jungle and over a 4,000 m.a.s.l. pass.

Sometimes things happen for a reason.
The physical detour became a positive mindset after changing your feelings about it, and you both had a very good experience that you didn't feel anymore the frustrations of the original goal in which you intended. Hopefully this is a good lesson to learn because there will be many other detours in life and how you approach them makes the whole difference in the end . The experiences after the landslide overshadowed everything to a pleasant outcome. Hopefully you will always remember it. Cheers to both of you.

I was wondering about the positioning of your GoPros - they are so conveniently high. Is it just because you put them on your extenders or are you using a special mount?
Thank you! 😊 Our GoPros are mounted high up on our handlebar “horns”, yes, and we also use a SP Gadgets Swivel Mount to get them higher.

Similar to when I moved to Nevada from San Diego last year; I researched the history and topography of Nevada but when I asked questions to residents who have lived here many years they could not give me an answer to a location????? I work for UBER EATS and I more than likely know way more of locations and places here in Las Vegas than most of the residents here. I've been riding a bike since I was about 2/3 years of age and through many years of schooling weather vane directions were taught and when I got into road cycling while living in San Diego, my father introduced me to Thomas Brother's Guide Map books....the rest is history.
I’m Ecuadorian and I’m watching you complaining about no one told you the road was blocked. I’m deeply sorry in the name of all Ecuadorians and I really can’t believe because we’re very empathic with foreign people. I think maybe they were scare to talk because don’t speak English, I don’t know!! But again I’m sorry and I hope besides this episode you have founded my country beautiful because it is. That was interesting, what an adventure. I can imagine the frustration that nobody told you about the landslide, but I guess that is how things go in South America. Good to see you could make the trip to Galapagos islands, what an amazing place. I saw you were cycling in the rain a lot... is that just because you were high in the mountains, or is now rainy season in Ecuador?
Yea, a lot of rain, especially in the Amazon jungle and in the lower highlands. In the jungle it just rains a lot generally and in the lower highlands, the clouds kind of get stuck on the mountains and it just keeps raining. It’s actually meant to be dry season right now, but apparently a very wet one.
How was breathing at altitude?
I was at 2700 metres in western China and felt sick like having the flu and a bad hangover.
We recently actually cycled at around 4800 m and that was really tough. It got pretty bad pretty quick above ~4400 m, but below that we didn’t feel much.

I can’t feel any sympathy for your predicament here. Landslides happen in that area frequently. Booking tickets in advance on bike tours is always a gamble. Sometimes you lose the gamble. In areas like this, best to just book from your point of embarkation.
Sure, it’s a gamble. But what was most frustrating for us in this scenario was the fact that nobody had the initiative to let us know about the closed road… or put up a sign. Especially since this landslide happened months before we got there…
@@louisaandtobi I forgot to get back on here and address my first comment. After watching the full video (I commented halfway through), I kind of changed my mind. It seemed like a lot of complaining up to the point you guys started heading back uphill. But I think you both handled it well upon that point and stayed positive. Nicely done!
I guess one thing I don’t get, and this is purely a personal and subjective thing, is the Galapagos thing. I’m a giant nature fan and do all my bike tours almost entirely for the sake of the scenery. And yet I have zero interest in going to those islands. I’ve looked into Ecuador and I’ve actually seen how this debacle affected you route. Had I been in the same position, I would have tried to go to the national park you guys end up pretty much circumnavigating as a result of having to double back - Sumaco. If I ever get down there, my hope is to take as many of those roads that wind their way from the basin to the highlands. Obviously difficult, but must be the most beautiful scenery in the country. The only thing about a road closure that would suck for me would be not being able to see what was beyond the land slide.
As someone who has cycled extensively in Asia, I think it’s worth warning you that there are very similar sorts of road closures there. And it’s not for any kind of malice that people will, much like Ecuador, not warn you. It’s because the concept of doing what we do is so completely foreign to them that they assume you’re turning around in several km’s anyway. Don’t take any of it personal. It’s just a different mindset.
