- Hundreds packed Las Vegas City Hall on Tuesday evening before a vote on a proposed temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the northwest valley.
Public comment continued late into the evening as the meeting entered its sixth hour on Tuesday.
I do not speak for the Church, but am an active member. A similar problem occured here in Sacramento when the proposed temple was opposed by people that thought the lights would be a detraction. Meetings were held and the men in the CHurch who had some resonsibility in the construction listend to what was said and waited for a decission from the loca government. It was decided that the lights should be turned off at 11:00 pm, that wea acceptable and the building was approved. AS a side note, about 500 yards from the temple is the Folsum automall and their many lights are on all night and I have heard nothing of any compaints for that. I hope the temple is approved, they are all beautiful and the grounds are also beautiful and anyone can go to them, walk around the gronds and enjoy the peacful atmosphere that is there. Have a great day.
Is there this much concern when a Costco is proposed?
Is there this much concern when a casino resort is proposed?
Not fighting against but literally telling the truth! I grew up with the Cardston Alberta temple and there is no steeple! I have been a member for over 50 years and this has never been taught as doctrine! To be good neighbours the truth should be told ! Also I care about light pollution. Another reason to be a good neighbour!
Hilarious that Las Vegas is concerned about the lighting of a temple…
Such idolizing people who rather face a death stone cold mountain than a holy temple of the Lord.
I've never seen such hatred in comments before. You guys are wrong. Imagine if you said this aboutt muslims or catholics, or another religion.
It will very likely go through.
Yeah, because otherwise, it would be a case of religious discrimination
Just say no!
As an LDS member I can confirm the height of the temple has nothing to do with the religion or the ordinances performed inside. There are many LDS. Temples with no steeple on top!
Oh, how enlightening it is to see the Salt Lake church leaders suddenly discover the "distinct religious necessity" for tall steeples and nighttime lighting. Do the Mormon gods not honor the temple rituals done in temples without steeples or nighttime lighting? What about other temples with god revealed plans that were changed after pushback from city planners?
True. The Provo City center temple and the Provo temple that is being torn down to name a couple. The church spokesperson is not being honest about the statement. Usually, money finds a way to win in the end. The church will get what it wants.
As a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints, I am dismayed that you are fighting against religious liberties. It absolutely has everything to do with the religious liberties because the prophet approves the design.
The Prophet has approved many different designs! For example, theCardston Alberta Temple, which is the temple I grew up going to. As a member for 50 years, the steeple was never discussed as important to the worship inside. Also, I am now concerned about light pollution as I understand what it does to migrating animals. These are all ways to be good, neighbors, and good representatives of Jesus Christ.
@@Chris-bd2se the prophet approved THIS design. You need to understand that he approved THAT design and for a reason just as all temples have a specific design for a reason
I think The Lord doesn't like any kind of contentions, just change the design to be smaller or without a steeple and reduce the light at night.
Why should people who don't own the property get any say?
The Lord doesn’t like any contentions?
So, Jesus Christ should not have said anything because it would create contentions among the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
We should avoid contentions but sometimes it’s unavoidable especially these days when people are easily offended and they have a great disdain for religious people and a great religious bigotry.
Great reply
Contention is dispelled when people admit correct information. There is no city ordinance that is being violated. Las Vegas has thousands of buildings that are brightly lit. No one seems too concerned about those but the minute that we put a Mormon building in the area and all of a sudden everybody gets all up in arms about it because of religious bigotry and that’s the real story here
Yep
The Prophet has approved many different designs!
Ha Ha
Im a citizen......approve it....let it be built....it will be beautiful
You need to do research on Mormonism

Does a huge white religious based structure annoy the residents of sin city?
it’s tacky and overbearing and they should stay in salt lake
Maybe it isn't so much the building but what and who the building represents.

How about affordable housing in that area instead?
The owner who sold to the church tried putting several apartments and townhouses in that area but the residents blocked it which is why the owner sold the land to the church.

Seriously these people love the city lights or they never would have moved near Vegas of all places
It's hilarious their statements " I always take my horses for a walk, and the biggest concern the lights, etc.. every stupidity they said....Ultimately they have no right to control what someone else builds on property they don’t own, so if they're ’re going to try to block development, . . . be careful what you wish for.
members admitting the leaders are lying, that the steeple has nothing to do with the ordinances and covenants in the temple.
The leaders aren’t lying. There’s no lying here. Religious liberties, and trust that we can worship in our own way and the state doesn’t get to decide how we choose to worship. The city signed off on our ability to build the building and now people are whining about it not because of bright lights because the city has plenty of those. They are whining about it because it is a Mormon building. This is nothing short of religious bigotry.
@zionmama150 I don't think so. The residents also lobbied and opposed the development of the property prior to the church purchasing.
@@dl1130 a MINORITY is opposing this. Not the whole citizenry. It’s sad people won’t let a religious group have temple t worship in.

That’s absolutely stupid because obviously the whole system of Las Vegas and it’s ridiculous amounts of sin causes a lot more poverty and homelessness than anything. The church has ever done. How many people have they enticed with the sin of gambling to ruin away their savings and their hard work so that they become homeless? How much has the city promoted drug culture and promoted things that have been abominable before God? No, it is sin city that is the accused of judgment here because they need to be judged, and God will judge them if they continue to fight against building one of his temples in this city

This is private club that does religious acts, not a religious building. It cannot claim 'religious' exemption on height. All religious Cathedrals & Temples buildings are bequeathed priveleges by the citizenry such as tax exemptions because they are to serve ALL the public. Public access is mandetory and expected, regardless if they are members or not. The temple must be open to everyone who want to enter or walk the grounds. Just be respectful such as being quiet, not disurbing the grounds or religious activity. Donations or tithing are not mandetory. But the LDS church don't allow this. If you enter the grounds, they will tell you to leave or have you escorted off by law enforecment. As comparison, Catholic Cathedrals and churches will allow anyone to enter when the doors are open or you have need. It doesn't matter is you are a member or not. Donation or tithing if optional. You just want to visit or seek refuge to rest, or meditation in the nave or sanctuary, you may enter. Just be respectful and don't disturb any sacraments like mass, baptism, confession or funerals (those are open anyways). Majority of religions around the worl dopen thei doors to visitors regardless. LDS downs not.
This 'temple' is private club building and should not be built as is. The need to respect the ordinances. If not, then they should pay taxes as they are a private club. They should also offer to pay the difference for the now higher taxes associated with thei claimed increased property values all the non member local residences they are now negatively affecting with cost. They could have actually folowed the teaching of Jesus Christ and used those billions of dollars for housing for the poor, free medical care and healthy food for those who have little, or aid the Native American Indians who are now returning in their right-of-return to reclaim their land as the Great Sprit Prophets prophesized. Do good instead of this selfish stick in the eye to the residence who followed the rules.
Stop worshipping the government.
I dare you to enter the grounds of any Latter-day Saints temple and let’s find out how fast you can leave 😂. You can check it out anytime you like, but you can never leave. Until they are through telling you all about it and making you watch the videos.
You can check out the billions of dollars and the priceless time and efforts the church provides in housing, food and medical assistance. I live on the other side of the world in a developing country and I have seen and done these things.

What a monstrosity of a building! It would be awful to have this thing to look out at instead of the natural beauty that nature provides. These religions worship god but ruin the beauty god gave us. Not only is this ugly but they tear mountains apart for granite and other materials to build it, not very worshipping at all.
Let me guess, you have never opposed the building of a single Vegas casino
The temple will only serve to enrich & bless Henderson & surrounding areas.
Your comment is nothing more than religious bigotry. Your attitude is very un American.
@@WhyDoTroonsHaveTheSameVoices that is actually false. Temples increased property values, which helps bring revenue to the city through property tax. It amazes me how many people do not understand how money works these days. It’s also really sad that they put religious bigotry over actual facts because every single city that has allowed a temple to go in their area has not only helped the people in that area aspire to higher things, it also helps, drown out crime and increases, the prosperity of those cities. This is statistical and not just assumption.
@@WhyDoTroonsHaveTheSameVoices As if you spend a single penny to the church for you to have the right to demand a tax. 🤡🤡🤡

Where I live the LDS does no community outreach and the community stays within itself.
@@heathercontois4501 that’s not true. The members pay tithing and donate humanitarian aid all the time. And there is plenty of outreach through the youth programs of the church, but a lot of times people don’t take advantage of what they could have if they just asked. We are always looking for service projects for our youth organizations.
Cult, Joseph Smith was no more than con man. No truth to any of his lies.
@@heathercontois4501 The problem is that the LDS church does not "brag" about all the community outreach it does, the enormous amount of charity work its members do, the amount of money it funnels to countless charity organizations worldwide. I wish they could share that information so the public can compare it to the other religious organizations that get "free passes" to build their buildings as they please. Believe me, it will blow people's mind how much the LDS contributes to charitable organizations (not operated by the LDS church)...but again they will continue to find any fault.
@@c.m.redhouse7667 shouldn't that be part of the transparency of churches having tax exempt status? Like scientology does zero outreach and is really a pyramid scheme for it's members, outside of the cult part, so it should no longer be tax exempt.
Deal with it, can't have your way when they have more money to do what they want.
