How to access the Kobo Secret Developer Menu

- Kobo has a new secret developer menu, that unlocks some new powerful features. This video shows you how to access it and what type of setting are available. This is not just for the Kobo Forma, but works on all modern Kobo e-readers.
These are some of the features of the new Kobo "devmode".
Glad to see a how-to video on devmode. Always love to see the inner workings. I think the particular options in Developer Mode vary according to the model. My Aura HD has different settings than you describe in the video.
Not sure why you talked about the sketch and game programs. On my Aura HD, the games under Beta Features have been visible for years. Maybe they aren't visible on other models? If you want a better display for the Word Scramble (I'm an addict), you can turn on the Enlarge Fonts settings.

Same for me, except I have the smaller Aura, which leads me to think those games were made for smaller screen sizes and/or resolutions.
On my aura second edition (not the waterproof one), all those games features were invisible. I had to type devmodeon first as described in the vid
It works on Kobo Clara HD after last update. Great reader, I'm so happy I haven't bought Kindle PW 4, Clara is so much nicer to use than my previous PW 2, it just behaves more like a book than any Kindle not shoving their shop in your face all the time. And now they are adding extra features which is amazin.

had these features on my Kobo Glo out of the box ages ago, but nice to see them also on the newer devices.

Sketchpad, Sudoku and WebBrowser were "Extras" on the Kobo Touch which was released sometime around 2010. Strange after all this time they are now "Beta" items that are hidden.

I primarily read on the tablet app (which still has room for improvement) on my Likebook Mimas, but as that's out for repair, I bought a used original Kobo Aura as a temporary e-reader, which is coincidentally the Kobo equivalent to the original Kindle Paperwhite that I had back in the day.
Even more so when you factor in how open Kobo's ecosystem is compared to that of Kindle.
Sure, Kobo devices are more expensive than their Kindle equivalents, but in my opinion, that's a small price to pay for a more open ecosystem.
On Kindle, users are locked into only being able to buy DRM protected books from Amazon, and being limited to Mobipocket and a few others. On Kobo, users can not only buy DRM protected books from them, but also from Play Books, and/or any other e-book store that supports Adobe DRM, and even then, the devices accept more formats than on Kindle.
As I primarily read comics, I have a number of comic PDFs from indie authors in a Calibre library. On Kindle, PDFs get treated as documents, so the covers don't show in the menu, whereas on Kobo, PDFs get treated as books, so the covers do show in the menu, and it even pulls metadata from the files themselves if it can.
1:32 That intro screen shouldn't look like that, as there's normally a "gentleman" graphic, and the fonts and margins are also screwed up. It loads fine on my original Aura. Maybe try and see if it loads correctly on your Clara HD?
2:05 Completely unplayable on the Forma. Maybe try it on your Clara HD? (Actually, it loaded correctly at 2:47, but again, designed for 6 inch EPD) (You need to tap each letter, then tap the last block you tapped in order to make it count, or tap on a block that isn't close by to deselect)
0:57 Those are actually available by default on my original Aura! However, that is running 1 firmware version behind the current one you showed in your video.
1:09 I can do that on mine too, but as the original Aura predates the current E-ink Carta technology and uses a Pearl display instead, refresh rates are lower, so it isn't as smooth.
2:03 Only formatting issue with the intro screen here is the missing margins on the left and right, which makes me suspect the 4 minigames here are designed for the smaller 6 inch displays.
2:25 That appears to have loaded correctly
3:40 Heads-up: That option is only present on Kobo eReaders equipped with "ComfortLight PRO".

works on the H20 edition except the Set Frontlight LED Manually option is not there. Everything else works. The software Version I have is 4.20.14622

So odd that there's not a proper dark mode unless you do this. It would be nice for book covers to still show up properly. Oh well! This'll have to do!
The manual front light LED option is not available on my Kobo Libra and Kobo h2o edition 2. anyone else having this issue or have a solution?
I have a kobo clara hd . I need to enable the landscape mode in developers option. I did as you explained in your video but it does not work. I will be very grateful if you can help to enable that. I was able to enable sketch pad though.
i think the reason why most of the games don't work is because they were built for the Kobo Touch back in 2011? my Touch i bought second hand had all those games without needing dev-mode, and they fit well on screen!!

Nope. Some Pocketbooks have text-to-speech feature but I wouldn't recommend any as they are very fragile. Android based readers with audio out should have no problem with that.
So cool!!!! Does the Libra HD also get that? I’ve seen it often tends to have a greenish tint to the backlight...so being able to reduce the green in the settings would be a winner :)

It does have the devmode options, but the light color control setting is not there.
I just bought a Kobo Libra H2O today and when I go to the Beta tab, all this stuff does not come up. The only thing that is displayed is Web Browser and Large Print Mode.
I downloaded the latest firmware and reader is fully up to date. Am I missing something?

Those betas were already available as beta on my Kobo Aura HD years ago. I assume that Kobo hides them under devmode because in 5 years they are still in Beta :-)

@@TTTTania Yes Tania it also had the inverted moe. But I did not use it, felt a little strange reading white letters on a almost black screen. For me it worked disturbing, not like the darkmode on a phone, tablet or pc. Just black background with white text on it.

My Kobo Touch (og 2012), Kobo Mini and Kobo H2O have all always had this menu and you don't need to type any random words into the search for them to be there

Doubtful. I'm pretty sure eink doesn't work like that. Besides, it won't matter because ebook readers last so long to begin with.
