You know a hemi alone isn't going to be better then lockers off-road. Although you could always add lockers. Then it would be unstoppable. Great rig man.
The Quadra-Drive II System that Jeep runs in the Grand Cherokees an Commanders uses ELSD to lock the front and rear (together or independently) almost immediately on any slippage. I don't know that they're as strong as lockers, and they require a bit of maintenance. But I never have to think about them locking, only waiting for the front to unlock (takes a few seconds).
The front only locks up when it becomes a 2 or 3 wheeler. It does seem to bias locking the rear up first, and then the front. The stocker 5.7 in my rig didn't make 300 in either number in '06, but I did put a much newer engine in earlier this year. That's what the "it's complicated" comment was about. I haven't (and likely won't) go put it on a dyno to find out what it actually makes. It makes more power than I will probably ever need.
true but think about it: if it turns out you don't get into overland, the XJ is a lot cheaper. an older 4runner is a toyota so it will be indestructible. Just suggestions
I have a 2010 Jeep Commander. I am finnally ready to lift it as I am finally starting to ramp up off road adventures now that the kids are grown. What parts do I need for a great reliable lift?
Got a build for my xk worked out right now. Just getting it rolling as I have the funds. One question, who made your front and rear bumpers? No one I can find carries them anymore so I may end up fabing some vs paying someone else to if they're not available. Haven't hit either yet but the tire carrier, high lift jack, and fuel/water tank mounts alone are worth their weight in gold.
There was a company called "WAM Bumpers" that purchased the plans from the guy I got mine from. I don't know if they're still around. You used to be able to find them on Facebook. The problem I've found with them, is that while they may be worth their weight in gold. They unfortunately weigh way more than gold, and do add a significant amount to the trick. If I were to do it over again, I would find someone that could build them with more aluminum.
You can get these in the UK for £4000 because the annual tax is £500. They are mostly/all 3.0crd Mercedes Diesel models and are built in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr. A good purchase if you can afford the tax. Your kids are gonna be safe.
Would love to know where he got the bumpers and a price range. Wanted to do this for my commander but can't find one with a winch mount. Is it just the same mounting points as a Cherokee?
Getting parts for the XK can be a complicated process. I would start with what you want to do with the rig and go from there. The most common place to start is a little bit of a lift and some larger tires. There is a build thread for my XK, and a couple others over at the OB forums.
I don't know about better mileage, but I think it makes it a little more prone to complaining pretty consistently, but always getting the job done ;) Thanks, it continues to be a pretty good rig, despite the abysmal mileage.
That is a really cool Commander, I wanted one for a long time and now I finally bought a 2007 one a few days ago, I still have my XJ which is an amazing Jeep and has been for over 20 years, I hope the Commander will keep up with his older bud
Nice......consider a Hypertech Max energy programmer. Mine is set up the same, well roughly, and that programmer gave me more HP and better mileage by 3 mpg. I swear by them.
Wish my commander was 4wd :( . If I was going to make it 4wd what’s the best option. Definitely need to get rid of the v6 lol . Would love to go the diesel Route tho
The company I bought the bumper from is out of business. I've heard rumors that someone bought all their plans, but I can't speak to that. I can say that they are seriously heavy. I kind of wish they would have had an aluminum option!
Jack Oliver yeah, WAM bumpers out of Georgia took over the company that made the bumpers on his XK, I have ordered both from WAM and love their customer service.
A very smart setup. Can I ask, what is the biggest tire you can run on a stock Jeep commander? I'm running Toyo open country at the moment (they came fitted). Thanks......
Tire size is complicated, because, well, the lifts are complicated. 265/70/17 is what I'm running. They don't rub, but I did need to cut the pinch weld back in the front.
I love mine. Literally has my blood, sweat, and tears in it. Have you checked out the build threads over at the OB forums? I have one, and there are a couple other XK builds posted. Great place to ask questions and get ideas!
The bumpers were purchased from a company that's no longer in business. I've heard rumors that someone else bought the plans for it, but I can't speak to that for sure.
Yes, you have the Tactical Armor ?? WAM bumpers has the plans and can produce them. (They're on Facebook.) I'm planning on ordering my rear bumper from them shortly!
I don't have a part number. I just ordered the Wilderness rack from them for the XK, and it came with the brackets. Sorry, I don't have any more specifics.
The company that I purchased it from, has long gone out of business. I've heard rumors that someone bought up the plans and jigs, but I can't speak to that. They're big, beefy, and REALLY heavy.
The company that I purchased it from, has long gone out of business. I've heard rumors that someone bought up the plans and jigs, but I can't speak to that. They're big, beefy, and REALLY heavy.
I went through several configs with this Jeep. The only one that works is the OME kit. I also added the RRO rear spacers to the mix so it didn't sag in the rear when fully loaded.
Josh Duncan Overland any issues at all with CVs and driveline angles or other worn out sooner than usual parts with the OME? I assume that’s why you didn’t space the front additionally and did rear only (besides for rear weight handling). Thank you!
I just read this quote by the CEO of Chrysler. He said "The Commander was not fit for human consumption. We sold a few but I have no idea why people bought them." What was he talking about?
The company he got his from is out of business now but WAM bumpers out of Georgia makes front and rear custom bumpers. I have a front one and love it and getting a rear one this year. If you want pictures let me know.
WamBumers.com and JeepSteel.com. You can't go wrong with any of them. I recently purchased the JeepSteel bumper. It's less expensive and Buzz the owner is awesome to work with! Wam Bumpers you can design your bumper and add so many different options.
The place I got the bumpers from went out of business shortly after I received my bumpers. WAM is supposedly a different company that purchased all the plans. I don't have any experience with them, or JeepSteel. They are the only places that I have heard of that have made to order bumpers for the XK. I feel it is worth pointing out that the address for WAM is the same as the former Tactical Armor Group (TAG) that I bought my bumper from, and previously Kennesaw Mountain Accessories and Blue Lake Offroad. I sincerely hope that it is has changed hands. I have no first hand knowledge working with WAM to say. That said, watch how you build your XK. The added weight changes the way it drives a little, and most of the marketed suspension upgrades don't handle the weight of steel bumpers, all your gear, and the HEMI very well. I found that the OME kit worked the best. Even with that, I still had to put spacers in the rear so that it didn't look like a baja racer when I was loaded for a long trip.
It's running 265/70/R17 BGF TA KO2. It has the OME HD springs front and rear, and I've added the spacers to the rear from the Rocky Road 2.5 inch spacer lift. I also replaced the upper control arms in the front.
I got it from a company that isn't around anymore. I think there is a company called "WAM Bumpers" or something like that, who purchased the plans. I've been told you can find them on Facebook.
The one in the video is a Mt. Shasta from Cascadia Vehicle Tents. I just have cross bars on there at the moment. A new Rack that can support it, and my gear when it's removed is on the short list.
The company that I bought it from has been out of business for a while. To be honest, I'm starting to wish that I would have found aluminum bumpers. They are really heavy.
Josh Duncan Overland It's never too late to cut speed holes. Lol! Seriously though, if you go to a decent metal worker (read: proficient with a TIG welder and understands the loads you need to pull), he'd probably be able to duplicate your current ones in aluminum for you. Sell the old ones on eBay and you'll recoup a good chunk of the cost.
That's the goal. It's down the list though. The current ones work. I will probably revisit the bumper weight when my tires wear out, since that's when I'll take a look at tire size and suspension again.
There is a bit of variance in the OME springs. You're ok with the extra lift in the rear if you need, but i wouldn't add them to the front. it's too much.
Yeah, that was my problem. I have a build thread over on the OB forums. I might have overbuilt my drawers (spare scrap laying around) that's adding to the weight. Then add the insane bumper, 15 gallons of fuel/water... It's a lot at the extreme back end of the rig.
I used to get around that in my old WK. The XK HEMI would probably do that also if I hadn't added... way too much weight. I've never run the 4.7. I can't say that I've heard any more bad things than I've heard about the HEMI. In point of fact, I think the early XK, the 4.7 was better than the 5.7. Good luck with your Commander!
because it's a new engine, I'd rather be conservative and have peoples say "that's too low" than over estimate. It has more than enough power for anything I've ever needed it to do.
I love the Commander. Probably the most under rated vehicle Jeep manufactured.
These trucks were meant to be the soul-successor of the XJ. Nice to see someone actually outfitting and using it.

My 2007 commander with a the 5.7 Hemi is rated at 330HP/375 torque. Just for reference.
Can I get some info on his roof rack? I want to mount a tent on my commander as well
I took my roof rack off to mount the tent. It's just 2 steel cross bars using the mounting brackets from the Garvin Wilderness Rack.
can you list which mounting brackets you used from GArvin?
I don't have a part number. I just ordered the Wilderness rack from them for the XK, and it came with the brackets.
Sorry, I don't have any more specifics.
Guy noticed the bumpers on the Jeep Commander, where did he get them?????
The company that I purchased it from, has long gone out of business. I've heard rumors that someone bought up the plans and jigs, but I can't speak to that.
They're big, beefy, and REALLY heavy.
Got it!
What kind of bumper is that? Does anyone know? I have an xk and Im having trouble finding some off road heavy duty bumpers.

Wham makes them.
What's your opinion on Xterra's?
Question, who makes those front and rear bumpers on that beast? I am looking for some for my Commander
The bumpers and guards came from a company that is now out of business.
BLAST, lol. Thanks for the response
Just bought one. But 4.7. Still not sure which lift to get.
Thank you!
Hey were did you get that front bumber...I want one from my commander
WAM bumpers out of Georgia makes front and rear custom bumpers
Stock exhaust?
Yes, the exhaust is still stock.
I just read this quote by the CEO of Chrysler. He said "The Commander was not fit for human consumption. We sold a few but I have no idea why people bought them." What was he talking about?
Where did he get those front and back bumper from?
The company he got his from is out of business now but WAM bumpers out of Georgia makes front and rear custom bumpers. I have a front one and love it and getting a rear one this year. If you want pictures let me know.
PLEASE ASK WHERE HE GOT A OFF ROAD XK BUMBER
Even with that, I still had to put spacers in the rear so that it didn't look like a baja racer when I was loaded for a long trip.
what size tires and wheel spacers are you running? I have the ome hd lift already. looking for an xk. Have a wk but selling for the commander.
It's running 265/70/R17 BGF TA KO2. It has the OME HD springs front and rear, and I've added the spacers to the rear from the Rocky Road 2.5 inch spacer lift. I also replaced the upper control arms in the front.
Thanks
Ha, my Nilight pods cause radio interference as well on my WK. I basically stopped using them because of it.
Where did you get the swing mount for the spare tire?
I got it from a company that isn't around anymore. I think there is a company called "WAM Bumpers" or something like that, who purchased the plans. I've been told you can find them on Facebook.
Thank You

Nice Jeep, the rooftop tent. Can you let me know the brand and the type of mounting system please.
Great video btw
The one in the video is a Mt. Shasta from Cascadia Vehicle Tents.
I just have cross bars on there at the moment. A new Rack that can support it, and my gear when it's removed is on the short list.
Hi, Where did you get the bumper? I have XK 2008.. Thanks
The company that I bought it from has been out of business for a while. To be honest, I'm starting to wish that I would have found aluminum bumpers. They are really heavy.
Oh ok. It looks like heavy duty bumper. Thank you!
Yeah, getting lighter bumpers is on the list for sure. But there are other priorities
That's the goal. It's down the list though. The current ones work. I will probably revisit the bumper weight when my tires wear out, since that's when I'll take a look at tire size and suspension again.
Where did you get the rear bumper
WAM bumpers out of Georgia makes front and rear custom bumpers.
Where did he get the bumpers? Sliders and skids are easy to find.
never mind. I found it below.
The Hemi 5.7 should be in the ballpark of 357hp and 390ftlbs of torque
Where did he get the rear spacers from?
The spacers that I put on top of the OME springs are the rear spacers from the Rocky Road Spacer lift kit. It was the first lift I put on it.
I have those but I thought two inches would be to much on top of my HD OME. Thanks!
There is a bit of variance in the OME springs. You're ok with the extra lift in the rear if you need, but i wouldn't add them to the front. it's too much.
Ya, I have a 3/8 spacer up front. I'm running a 27 liter transfer tank that makes the rear sag a lot!
Yeah, that was my problem. I have a build thread over on the OB forums. I might have overbuilt my drawers (spare scrap laying around) that's adding to the weight. Then add the insane bumper, 15 gallons of fuel/water... It's a lot at the extreme back end of the rig.
Where can I get these bumpers?
WAM bumpers out of Georgia makes front and rear custom bumpers
where can i get this bumper?
The company I bought it from is out of business. I think a company called "WAM" bought the plans. You can find them on Facebook I think.
A vw Touareg ?
HP of a 2007 is 345HP
fliping720. The motor is a 2015
Going Off Grid 345hp and 375 torque.
MUST KNOW WHERE HE GOT THE BUMPER!
The company I bought it from is out of business. I think a company called "WAM" bought the plans. You can find them on Facebook I think.
360 HP, 390 TQ, and the curb weight is not 6000+ pounds.... its in the neighborhood of 4900.
I'm thinking about purchasing this... and now I can make it zombie ready
330-345 hp 370 torque for 05 06 07 hemi 08-10 was 360hp 390 turks
4,591 to 5,185 lbs curb weight from factory
Has to get about 11 mpg.
On the trip down to the OB Rally last September, I got right at or just under 15MPG! Of course, most of that trip was spent at sub 65 MPH.
Josh Duncan Overland ha I get just over 15 with pissed off rush hour city driving. I have the 4.7
I used to get around that in my old WK.
Should have bought the 3.0 diesel. It's got 100ft lb torque more than the hemi !
What is this dude smoking? I have the same Commander, same color. Only its an 07 and the HP is 343 ish probably 360 on the torque.
He says in the video it's a 2015 Hemi motor
because it's a new engine, I'd rather be conservative and have peoples say "that's too low" than over estimate.
It has more than enough power for anything I've ever needed it to do.
Jeffrey K lol 2015 hemi should be 390hp I believe.. or 390tq.. one of them
Man, I wish, the camera is on the passenger side so I can actually see what they are talking about inside the rig
If there's anything you want to know, feel free to ask!
got it
Hes way off, 2015 5.7l hemi is 395hp and 410 lbft of torque
What number is that?
What number are you referring to?
