Even after spending a full couple of days trying to get used to the quirks of using an extended display with iPadOS, this video is much appreciated just to reaffirm I’m not missing something obvious about how it works! This video was everything I pretty much wanted to have someone discuss, and it outlines all the quirks I’ve noticed myself. I think the most annoying things for me right now are: 1) if you don’t have stage manager turned on for both your iPad and your external display, you simply cannot drag windows from the iPad to the external display. You’re forced to tap/click on the 3 dots at the top of the window and select “Send to (iPad/External Display).” Not a fan of this primarily since I prefer using Split View and Slide Over on my 11 inch iPad to make use of the space it has best, but they’ll get transformed back into separated windows as soon as you activate Stage Manager. As far as I can tell you can’t send the Split View setup you have for two apps at a time on your iPad to your external display and maintain the Split View-you have to do one app/window at a time and manually readjust it on the display. It’s just plain inconvenient and awkward. 2) Bringing up the Recent Apps menu on the sidebar for an extended display is weirdly inconsistent. I prefer to not have the menu displayed at all times since otherwise everything is off-center. But if you disable the recent apps menu, at least in my experience, you only *might* be able to continue moving your cursor to the left bezel of the monitor to bring up the Recent Apps menu. Meanwhile, if you resize a window too large and the dock gets covered then you also can’t bring up the dock until you resize the window…And lastly the only way I’ve found how to bring up all windows/instances I have on the external display (similar to how you would do so on an iPad by swiping up from the bottom and then to the right) is to literally flick my cursor in a counterclockwise motion from the bottom-left corner of the monitor????? 😅
As a long-time windows user, utilizing the iPad in this way is so intriguing but has a learning curve. It can't replace my laptop entirely, since I am an engineering student and the iPad doesn't isn't easily able to code at the moment. My institution also requires apps that are not available (or convenient to use) on the iPad. I've been using my iPad air 5 for 6 months now and I love it for taking notes digitally, and doing light tasks like viewing documents, typing papers, surfing the web, etc. It is also great for entertainment because of its small form factor and it is very responsive because of the M1 chip. I've used Chromebooks in the past, and the iPad is almost everything I wanted to see in the Chromebook. The apps are optimized for the iPad and there are minimal issues, though mobile apps have a different UI than websites and apps on a full-fledged PC. I never had a Mac before so learning some of the keyboard shortcuts were hard for me. Thank you for this video! I am interested in learning more about how to get the most usage from my iPad as well!

Hey, your videos are great! Been a windows/samsung user for years and recently got an ipad for hits'n'giggles. Realizing the potential of all platforms together is like smelling pandora's socks (roses). Your video here is fantastic!! Will you make more vids on how to bridge the gap between platforms? Thanks for the video! Personally, I gave up. I really wanted to use my new iPad Pro (M2) as my only computer but it's just to buggy still. I like mirroring (which is fast) with only using my wifi. But for those who are needing accessibility options, which I do (Deaf with CI and Visually impaired) foret it. I think Apple must be leaving this for last. Voice Over works and streaming sound to my Cochlear Implant still works but all else is a hit or miss. You can't use the zoom on screen button. In fact I can't even figure out how to zoom. Key combos for zoom don't work. I just end up getting frustrated and quickly go back to my PC.
