I have a very similar jig I bought many years ago. It's been so long that I no longer have any paperwork and had forgotten how to set it up. Your demo and explanation was very helpful. The only nit I would pick is that I was always taught to rout right to left instead of left to right to keep the router cutting against the wood instead of with it for a smoother and safer cut.
Just wanted to thank you for your video, it was very helpful in setting mine up! Even though all router plates and the set up are different, I learned a lot from your video.
Loved the way you took your time to explain and show what you were doing. Good to see the mistakes and the successes, along with clear views of the work. My first time watching one of your videos. I don't understand 5.16th etc, as I'm british, but will work out and convert the measurements. I have now subscribed to your channel. 🇬🇧
Thanks for making this - I've been watching various dovetail tutorials and they've all been super technical and didn't do a good job of covering the basics.
Bingo! Your video helped me resolve my problem in the first 1 minute 13 seconds where you point out that the instead of a 1/2” router template guide you should use the 7/16 (on the Harbor Freight jig). As soon as I made that change, everything worked perfectly. Thanks!
Brilliant!! I bought this exact jig off marketplace and have been struggling to work out how to use it. I was missing the bit that goes on the bottom of the router to fit the jig!
Yeah - hand routers (prob big ones too) don't always have nice guide mounting. Mine has a hole without a locking or leveling bracket. Luckily, the hole is tight enough to work now, but I can see that will eventually not be the case.
Thanks for this video. You have a great delivery and very helpful. Just one question. The left/right offset of the two pieces of wood, is that relative to the thickness of the wood or of the bit or what? I didn’t catch that from your video but I will watch again once I get my dad’s old jig dusted off. It’s time for me to learn how to use it.
Thanks man I have to build 16 drawer boxes for a job but it’s been a year since I’ve used dove tails I’m also looking at the harbor freight set up since last time I used the 250$ porter cable it was too fragile but 40$ harbor fright ain’t bad to learn from 💪🏼
Your blowout might have also been the horizontal lock bowing bcz you didn't have a board on right. If you move the sacrifice board all the way to the right, you may not need to sacrifice. Also, one guy stressed doing the initial width swipe from right to left. Said that saved rough ends because of bit rotation.
Very good and informative video thank you, just what I needed. I have the same jig but with a different name on it, could i check one thing with you please? The surface the horizontal board lays on (the top surface) is yours flat? as mine is not and it causes the board to rock when clamping down and i'm sure that's not correct.😥
Hi! I just bought a dovetail jig, I guess the same but different brand. I bought a 1/2”(12,7mm) guide ring and have a 1/2”(12,7mm) dovetail router bit. Now I have gave up because no lower or upper setting gets me usable results. If I eyeball a setting you are using then I get a so tight joint that no one can hammer together, If I make a shallower it gets better a bit but that’s unusable shallow… What am I doing wrong?
Great job. I have one of those that I got from a relative and worked with it for several hours and couldn't get it to work like I wanted. Did you try a through dovetail?
1/4" shank is going to produce a lot of chatter. If you’re serious about a dovetail jig you should consider getting a 1/2" router with an 8mm collet. You’ll thank me later. Great job!
as you can see he never shows complete drawer where everything lines up , this jig will not do that, they will always be off , the only thing you can make with this are 2 piece with right angles, which is worthless, , also you will not find a complete video on youtube where anyone shows you this jig works and step by step , and shows complete drawer with no speeding up to hide the fact this jig is just fraud junk, when you see scam video like this one , be sure to punish them and unsubscribe, honesty would have been much better .

I'm not sure I have your patience, but your enthusiasm is infectious. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for doing this! Super helpful to see your trials and understand the process.

Will follow and subscribe to you because I benefit more from someone making (the same) mistakes, so I can learn from them. Thank you!!
Great video, thanks for sharing
Perfect, thanks man. I wish I had this video along time ago.

Thanks for your efforts. Very helpful
What is the size of the router, I know the shank is 1/4 what’s the profile? 1/4 also or 1/2 ? Thanks

You need a bigger mallet.
