Ahhh John Wilson!!! I never missed an episode when I was a kid, I remember it was on on a Thursday or Friday night but it was just in time to get me hyped about the weekends fishing I must've been about 7-8 years old lol! RIP John you brought us anglers more joy than you probably ever realised, not many fishing programmes on the TV in the 90's...

I got to meet him when he came to the fishing show at the NEC Birmingham. Such a nice chap. He’s surely missed by the whole of the fishing community.

@@jezchef I'm sure it was a labour of love uploading the episode's. I absolutely loved John Wilson's TV series just a pity we don't have people like him on the TV now . Haven't fished in a number of year's but after watching these I'm tempted to purchase a new rod and reel and get back at it.

So glad to see these popping up. Many I missed originally. I love the simplicity of fishing back then, so far removed from the huge base stations, extra rods and roosts of the modern match angler. As for John he never followed angling fashion but went his own way instead. From his “ mobile tackle shop” jackets to his cut down waders much easier to walk in but maintaining the waterproof kneel patch, it worked for him but surprisingly didn’t become fishing mainstream methods.
But he ignored all that. If it worked for him that’s all that mattered and I too have followed his approach. I use plumbers knee pads to avoid “ muddy knee syndrome” and to preserve those valuable joints instead. Others don’t do it, think it looks stupid, but it works for me just like Johns cut down waders did for him.
He could of course have used the very best, the most expensive gear, but he wanted to show I think that you could achieve results with simple well used gear fishing properly. He didn’t upgrade to the latest new gear for the sake of it when his older gear still did the job. That helped make angling more accessible to the masses without breaking the bank.
He never took up with the biggest brand of suppliers for sponsorship although no doubt he could.
He brought the joy of fishing to the masses, combining that with his love of world wide travel. It’s sad that he is no longer with us, except a part of him will always remain through his extensive back library of film.
Searching out new adventures and angling frontiers whilst at the same time staying his own man, a bit of a Maverick, not tied to promoting tackle brands products whether he truly favours them or not.
A unique one off personality who popularised a sport combining it with a clear love of nature and the flora and fauna around us.
Bless you John and your sayings. Wherever your sprit is now may those monsters still “come to Johny” and the “ clonkers” continue to be netted.

A family friend got me into fishing when i was a young boy. And this friend had a lot of john Wilson fishing videos on VHS and would lend them to me. I think I picked up a fair amount of knowledge watching JW videos. Went from float fishing on the local rivers to dead baiting for pike, to big carping on still waters and now im spinning for pike, perch and possibly Zander.

I was also at the mercy of change in respects to forward thinking as my hunt for large fish such as carp and pike. JW had a massive impact on my fishing styles and locations. The holy grail for me would be to visit Thailand.

@@jezchef same family friend also had a lot of Rex Hunt videos. I think both shows were recorded roughly around the same time as each other. JW was the still the king though. At least till Matt Hayes and Mick Brown started getting pretty famous in the angling world and I think they really picked up where JW left off. Matt & Mick's shows/videos and magazine articles that they wrote were always highly technical and always full of expert knowledge.
