    Golden days of match fishing, big competitions , with competitors on a more even playing field. 13ft rod and a reel. No £500 boxes or £2,000 poles

      So true fishing was better in the old days now people are more interested in expensive fishing tackle than catching fish!!!

    The match we all wanted to win back them. Never got past the regional finals myself. Great to see Chris Love, Dickie Carr and a few more of my contemporaries. Dunno how many of us are still about. Proper fishing when it was a massive participant game. None of that carp stuff.

    fishing a stick float with a 13ft rod and an ABU closed face reel will never go out of fashion

    My Father fished in that match and caught the biggest fish. It's weird seeing him twenty years younger than I am now. All I remember about it was that he came back with thousands and thousands of embassy cigarettes. He didn't smoke and gave them all away.

    Great stuff!! Simple days. Incredible how much match angling changed in the following decade. Micromesh keepnets, feeder fishing, carbon poles, continental seat boxes etc. Mitchell reels and ABU 506s have certainly stood the test of time though.

    "Everyone gets a packed lunch and a bottle of beer" lol. Fascinating historical window into match fishing. Waxed jackets and wicker seat boxes everywhere, love it, thanks for the upload.

    This is awesome! My father fished in the 1972 Woodbine Challenge - Johnny Thorpe if anyone remembers. Certainly he had similar tackle to that used here, and I like the use of the Van der Valk theme.

    One of the lads in an old club i was with actually came second in this match with 69 pounds & 2 oz He qualified for Denmark by winning the North East semi on the river Wharfe at Ulleskelf with 14 pounds from the graveyard section. The same club could also provide a second placed finisher in Denmark with 89 pounds a few years later and i think that was the year Ken Giles won the match with 110 pounds of Bream

    apollo36uk deserves a knighthood for this!...I first saw the tape in 1974/5 at a Hinckley Angling Club event at the "Sweet Pea Club" in Coventry Rd. Ivan Marks was guest speaker, but was late, think someone had to drive to Leicester to get him!
    Brilliant roach fishing, long trotting, 13ft glass rods and ABU 506's!
    A great bit where Ken Giles realizes that He has to "crank it up"..so changes to "the bomb", mid stream, to get a better stamp off fish....does so while standing up and holding rod!

    Uk rivers have declined massively. I worked at factory who used all sorts of chemicals including acid. I noticed that run off from the factory site was entering the stream that ran through the factory. Being a countryman I brought it to the attention of the boss. He said don’t worry we pay the EA for water abstraction and we pay the EA to discharge waste into the river. The people who are supposed to look after are waterways earn money from people who pollute are waterways.

  • @CB-xr1eg
    @CB-xr1eg 6 років тому

    I have always thought that " the gentle art of trotting " consisted of a centrepin reel and stick float.
    These anglers all seem to be using a closed face reel or a fixed spool.
    I'm going to be river fishing this autumn and I'll definitely be using a centrepin, a Grice & Young Gypsy D'Argent, which looks well worn but still functions perfectly well.

I have been looking for years now as apparently a film was made by WD & HO Wills but Bristol Records Office say that they dont have a copy. My Dad won it in 1974 so would love some footage - Please help!!

    River fishing has declined in the Uk , a country where if you have the money you can pay the people who look after the waterways to discharge your waste into the waters they manage.

    Disgusting the way they use to treat fish just swinging them in and throwing them on the bank

    • @SteeeveO
      @SteeeveO 3 роки тому +1

      They are throwing them into keepnets so they can be weighed at the end & put back alive. They are not putting them on the bank.

    • @pimpedoutbarbie1
      @pimpedoutbarbie1 3 роки тому

      Look at when the fish were being weighed in fish just dumped on the bank to weigh separately and dumped in metal cages, thank god we look after fish so much better now, I've never had a fish injured or killed weighing in after a match even when weighing in 100lb weights

    • @SteeeveO
      @SteeeveO 3 роки тому

      @@pimpedoutbarbie1 I thought you meant as they swung them in after catching them - but yes having watched the full video you're right that they are a bit rough at the weigh-in. It was the 70's though - nearly all blokes smoking & expecting tea on the table when they got home....
