When my wife and I got married, I had their song "Lady" played at the reception as our first dance as husband and wife. Years later, this song was playing as she drove me to the airport to leave for Air Force Basic Training. I lost her last month after 50 years together. Cant hear either song now without breaking down. Thanks for playing and reviewing "our" song.

When this song was playing on the radio back in the day, I was heading to basic training, and leaving my girlfriend behind, as I headed into the big scary world, I can remember standing at the phone booth, listening to this song over the phone, talking about getting married when I got back, etc...well, I got back, we never married, I'm now 65, I've seen Styx live, twice, I've been a Styx fan since the 70's...thanks for reacting to them.

Styx is one of those groups with a lot of lore, a lot of it being Dennis vs. the rest of the group. Dennis wanted a theatrical approach to the songs and band performance, but the rest of the group felt that they were a rock band and the performance should reflect that. Everything came to a head during the 1983 "Kilroy Was Here" tour. For the first ten dates, Dennis had the group perform a play of sorts, which delayed the songs for an hour. This went over poorly with the audience. Finally, the record company stepped in and said "Just play the damn songs and cut out this acting stuff!!" At some point, the play was done on video (and it's out there). The band took six years off after the tour (there was some solo projects going on) before resuming recording and touring without Dennis. The band reunited in 1996 for a performance to honor drummer John Pannozo, who died of liver disease.
Styx continued to perform without Dennis and tried to avoid playing his songs (he wrote at least 50% of their hits). About five or six years ago, the band bowed to public pressure and inserted Dennis' songs into their performances.
I have always loved the music of Styx and coincidentally I sing on the same key as Dennis (I sang lead in a RUSH tribute band in college and later spent 20 years in a large church choir). I've seen videos of the band performing with Dennis and it always looked unbalanced to me (but that's just me).

The way they are dressed is how a lot of rock musicians dressed at concerts. Just wore what they wanted to wear, not necessarily with a matching style.
The lead singer on this song, Dennis DeYoung, is not front and center because he is not the only lead singer in the band. The two guitarists, James Young and Tony Shaw also wrote songs and sang lead. As is fairly common for bands with multiple writers and singers, the one who wrote the song usually sings lead. The two guitarists were also both lead guitarists so they would usually alternate playing lead on the songs.
