The Hollies - very popular in late 60's into the 70's. Must listen and enjoy: Bus Stop, He ain't Heavy, The air that I breathe. Great vocals and instrumentals.
Maddy, this is truly one of my favorite songs by the Hollies but my all time favorite Song of theirs is often overlooked by reactors it is called “Bus stop” and it makes me wish for a simpler time.
Great description of his voice at the end and also love that you noticed how solid the combination of bass guitar and drums and guitar is, it's just so damn fun. I love his voice and his delivery on this, and he's so playful at the end with what he does.
Oh my goodness, I can't wait for this. One of my favorite songs forever. The Hollies are a great band, although not much else they did sounds exactly like this, in fact I think it's hilarious that even back in the day, people often got confused and assumed that this was Creedence Clearwater Revival from the sound of it, but nope, it's The Hollies. I love everything about it as a musician on every level, and it's really a funny and clever song. When that bass guitar kicks in, wow, it's off to the races. This song is so fun to dance to. It was on the radio all the time and it got played a lot at parties and whatnot.
I actually remember when this came out. Yup I'm that old but I don't care look at all the great music I got to listen to when it came out for the first time.❤
Good morning, Maddy! They must have been psychic. You truly are cool and wearing black, but I'm not sure about long. You're definitely awesome, Happy Monday, and thank you so much for the honor of carrying one of your wrenches. I will serve diligently and fairly! ✌️☮️👊🤙🤟❤️
Love this song! So rock n roll! Contrast this with one of their early hits "Bus Stop"! Also He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother). Great band that evolved with the times!
When I was a teenager in the 70s I installed four big Kenwood speakers and a couple of tweeters in my car. My friends piled in and we headed down the road. I put this song on loud. When it finished, they all yelled "Play it Again!" Great memory.
If you listen to Bus Stop, The Air That I Breathe, and this song, they sound like three great songs from three great bands, but it's all the same band, The Hollies! I see that somebody mentioned He Ain't Heavy, but I didn't know that was The Hollies. That's a great song, too.
I always liked this song. I never really thought about the lyrics but thanks to the comments below I now know what it' about. I was surprised at the multiple comments saying it sounded or reminded them of CCR. I don't hear it, but more than one person said it so there has to be something to it. Maybe it's because I always knew it was not CCR that I didn't hear any similarities. I bet next time I listen I will hear CCR.
I love being Maddy's friend ❤ FYI the band took it's name because the members were all big fans of Buddy Holly ("The Hollies".... But because of the chosen spelling, many people think the band's name has something to do with Christmas greenery)
The thing about this riff... I used to try and play it by ear, and it never sounded right. It sounds like such a simple blues riff, which it is, but I could just never make it sound right. But the key is in this video. There are 3 guitarists, and one bass player. Each of the 3 guitarists are playing the same riff, but on different octaves and each playing a little differently, but they make it sound like it's one guitar. Totally genius. Great reaction.
The Hollies were part of the British Invasion, Their first hit was Bus Stop in 1965 . I always ❤ this song , even i was young then i loved that Bass guitar. 😎
Saturday night I was downtown Working for the FBI Sitting in a nest of bad men Whiskey bottles piling high Bootlegging boozer on the west side Full of people who are doing wrong Just about to call up the D.A. man When I heard this woman singing a song A pair of forty fives made me open my eyes My temperature started to rise She was a long cool woman in a black dress Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall Just one look I was a bad mess 'Cause that long cool woman had it all I saw her heading to the table Well, a tall walking big black cat Charlie said, I hope that you're able, boy 'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at Well, suddenly we hear the sirens And everybody started to run Jumping under doors and tables Well, I heard somebody shooting a gun Well, the D.A. was pumping my left hand She was holding my right Well, I told her, don't get scared 'Cause you're gonna be spared I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living With a long cool woman in a black dress Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall Well with just one look I was a bad mess 'Cause that long cool woman had it all Had it all, had it all, had it all Had it all, had it all, had it all (she had it all)
Thanks for posting the lyrics. It was so hard for me to understand it when this first came out that I actually got the words and sang along with the song until I had it. Strange story but good song. "Jumping under doors ... " "I gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living ..." Pretty sure he would be in trouble for being there and not calling it in ? After the raid, why was she holding his hand ? Was he going to tell the cops to give her a pass ? Is she selling it and Charlie is her pimp ?
I would suggest listening to it again but, follow along with the lyrics. It’s a great song but, his lyrics can be hard to make out at times. You’ll get a whole new appreciation for the song when you know all of the lyrics.

Graham Nash, finally left the Hollies, he fell in love with Joni Mitchell, who was on tour. He left the Band and followed her to California, where they finally got togeather. His Song " Our House" says it all! Beautiful Song, however word of warning. Used to Sing it to my first Wife, Guitar and all! Didn't work, she ran off with a work colleague. Hey, Maddy. He was working an undercover sting for the FBI when a LONG COOL WOMAN in a BLACK DRESS got caught up in the events that went sideways. This is the song that made me buy a guitar and learn to play it. Anyway the song is such a fun and simple song to understand, just read the lyrics. But to sum it up, he was an undercover FBI agent looking for bootleggers when he noticed a pair of . 45s attached to a long cool woman in a black dress who was 5'9 beautiful and tall. A long cool woman in a black dress who was 5'9 beautiful and tall.
In case y’all haven’t figured it out yet this song was about Maddy. I mean come on “a long cool woman in a black dress “? Its literally about a cop working a case, then he runs into you
The pair of 45.s just might be guns or her breast size, she was at a party where guys were gambling and getting drunk and the G man means FBI was there undercover but when the sirens announced the police were coming, they started running out the door and he grabbed the Long cool women to escape the FEDS! One of my favorites of all time!
When I first heard this, I thought it was CCR, who I was a big fan of. Allen Clarke imitated John Fogerty's vocal style. It was similar to the Creedence song "Green River". Unlike typical Moody Blues, it sounds like they copied CCR's sound. Still a great song.

Just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
I saw her heading to the table
Well, a tall walking big black cat
Charlie said, I hope that you're able, boy
'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Well, suddenly we hear the sirens
And everybody started to run
Jumping under doors and tables
Well, I heard somebody shooting a gun
Well, the D.A. was pumping my left hand
She was holding my right
Well, I told her, don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared
I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall
Well with just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all (she had it all)
