  • / ulillillia --- Data is a very rare drop on normal difficulty, rare on hard difficulty, and somewhat rare on very hard. The scorpions are the best source for data drops as there are 2 sets of 150 and the one immediately right upon entry that's got 210. But, there is a way to get data so fast that it makes even the scorpions look pathetic for a source.
What is data used for? At first, it's best to use data to max the ability chips. These can each add 720 to the stat in question instead of 240 (480 bonus). Once those are maxed out, taking 24,000 data to do so, the next and last usage for data is with stat maxing. Only strength, defense, wisdom, spirit, and speed are worth putting data toward. HP and MP are very poorly balanced for data costs where only a few level ups already reaches the cap of 400 needed per boost of just 1. To get a full level up's worth for HP and MP now, where I get 72 HP and 96 MP per level, that's 28,800 and 38,400 data for each, totaling 67,200. The other 5 stats typically only increase by just 1 per level for where I'm at now, a tiny 400 (or even something smaller like 230). Because the increases on the stats from leveling up count into the data cost, it is best to do this on as low of a level as possible. Thus, for all but the starting digimon, I keep them at level 1 and dump all the data into them I can. Agumon, now, is already almost powerful enough to handle hard mode, albeit barely (needs some of that high end colored equipment to have a chance). With 400 as the data need cap, and the formula being "DataCost = (Stat-41)÷5" (round the result down), this means 2040 costs 399 data to get a +1 on and 2041 and above will cost 400. By getting all 5 main stats to needing 400 data (being 2041 base), then the penalty from leveling up doesn't take effect, thus, maximizing the efficiency of the use of data. For the one character that has to go through everything, that's the only sacrifice for efficiency, but, preparing for effective autoleveling, I've dumped a huge amount of data into strength, getting a few thousand extra in bonus strength.
The first part of this video just shows how I get things set up after a memory card load (very hard difficulty gives the most data at the fastest pace). The enemies never drop data here (for what I can tell) so they're not worth fighting. Thus, I ignore the enemies. By having spirit being at least 4400 or so, the sleep and freeze that the frogs and grass thing never take effect. Defense and speed are needed otherwise. Strength and wisdom are completely unimportant with doing this. I get the chests, for which all but 2 in the part I cover (which has the highest density) have data. In the room with the 2 pack of chests, only the top one drops data. In the second part where that weird spiny monster with the long reach comes out, the top left chest never drops data so I can ignore it. The "score" in the top left corner with the 3 yellow digits has no purpose with this so it can just be ignored. To reset the item road dungeon, respawning the chests, you have to either go into another dungeon and immediately exit it then return, or gate out, do a memory card save, end the game, then load the save, and go again. I only focus on this part because that's where the density of treasure chests is the highest. Past the green leaf wall (need fire to remove it) is a lone chest that isn't worth it. Past the point where I turn back, the density drops a lot, making it not worthwhile.
After I do one round at normal speed, I then bring about what I do to maximize the speed the game runs at then I effectively play the game at roughly 500% true speed, which allows me to do these runs typically in 46 seconds or less. I often get from 42 to 44 seconds per round, depending on how much I get caught up on corners, stray off a little too much, or get tangled up in the unwanted enemies. I jump over the enemies often, especially in areas where they tend to gather up. When I have 9300 or more data, I gate out once I get into mecha nest then use up the data. Less than 9300 means I do another round. The first batch of data gets dumped into Guilmon's strength. Then, after the second round, I switch to Agumon to show how I work the level 1 digimon and why it's so important to dump all the data in.
Of course, there's a collision glitch with the game that makes it possible to be "inside" the block that leads to the platform above.

I believe this is the first time that ulillillia has played a game on an emulator, never thought we would see the day... His friend who he is living with owns the game but I think he wanted that 5x faster grinding using emulator speedup

It was even his idea! And I'm playing as well now, since it's one of my favorite games of all time, but its nice playing along with someone else with a new set of eyes as well.

I remember seeing this game back in the day, however I never played it. I had no clue there was so much depth to it! Looks like a good game.
