James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 3 years ago.
The donor was a family member far removed, who saw the video knowing they were related and was tested and was a match. Changes the whole holidays I'm sure
When we are young children it was our parents who chased the monsters away ( when we were afraid). Both James and his father served in the military and as with many sons , he wanted then and now to make his father proud. But as the child becomes an adult it’s a relationship between grown men. James’ father was awaiting a kidney transplant so at the time it was a sort of closure in the face of what could have been the end. Thankfully James’ father received his transplant and is doing well. When this was filmed the entire crew was in tears.
It's an amazing video. 100% real and 100% genuine. No 'Auto-Tune'. One take. James donated all the proceeds from this video to the fantastic UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much brilliant work for ex-servicemen and servicewomen and their rehabilitation, dealing with their physical and emotional issues.
The beautiful lady taps her fingers all the time. Until the picture of James and his dad is shown, the hands fall silent. And finally they all show REAL emotions.
It was his Dads idea to do the video together before he died. And they thought that time was coming very soon. He loved the song and tribute to him. James sang this song live and the video was one take. Everyone was to emotional to reshoot it. He wanted to sing live for the emotion to convey. You see they dress alike, mannerisms alike, same pinky ring same finger and James has always worn that ring. Same face😊. Both veterans. And when he left for his first deployment his father told him... "You're not my son. I'm not your father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye."😢 He'd been where his son was going and said the words he thought were best. Plus I believe where they're from this is what fathers say to sons going to war.
I've read that the whole crew was in tears during the filming of the video. When it was over his dad was like "hey! I'm not dead yet!" Both of them were Soldiers.
Only ppl who had a father present in their lives will get this song. A dad who read bedtime stories, tucked you in, made you feel safe. A dad who stuck around and raised his children. These ppl haven’t a clue, you can see it.
Chasing the monsters away means when we were children our parents would chase the monsters away if we were scared so he’s telling his dad don’t be afraid to die I’m here like you were to chase them away
When we're children kids get scared in the dark.. often they say "a monsters under the bed", or "monsters in the closet".. they want the light on because the child is afraid of the dark. That's what the saying in the song "chase the monsters away".. that it's his turn now that he's grown up to protect the father.. roles reversed in old age.
I always cry when I see this video. Super emotional. Please react to Piece by piece by Kelly Clarkson (live from the American idol farewell season) It is about her father leaving them when she was very young. She made the whole audience cry ❤️
When you are a child and were afraid, your parents scared the monsters away. Here it's his turn to look after his dying father. Luckily a kidney doner saved his fathers life.
Unfortunately I understand it completely. Not according to James Blunt but someone I know who is very dear to me. The Father was his dad shortly before birth, not by blood but loved him tremendously all his growing days as his own. On the day the son turned 18 years old, his dad took him under his wings on the job putting him on a fast track to become a Journeyman by trade, building power plants. The son excelled with his dad's guidance, and within 6 months, which is unheard of the son made it. A few short years later, the diagnosis of cancer came. All his children and wife were devastated. His father being always strong, still worked every day during the 2 full rounds of Chemo and 1 continued round of radiation, until his company laid his dad off. He was the eldest son but the other sons were too young to work and THIS adopted son decided to work Night and day to provide enough money for dad's treatment and medication. You see, there are months of delays under disability. 'The Affordable Care Act' isn't what was promised either. The cancer had already used up any family savings. His Father had already sold his truck and any physical possessions, so there wasn't money to pay for anything. Even though the cancer had metastasized splitting into 4 different types of cancer, the war by the Grace of God was still winning bc his son was able to take the lead stepping up to provide. Hospitalized in the 2nd year of illness, but excited bc tomorrow his dad was being released to a Rehabilitation Facility, he bought his dad his favorite take-out food, and ate with his dad and mom there in the hospital room. They talked and watched TV and laughed together. When the nurse said visiting hours were long passed, the son told the nurse, that's okay bc I'm going to make a bed for me here on the floor bc mom's staying too in that chair. Morning came, beautiful and sunny ... until they insisted his dad take a drug his father never had bc his dad was strong and never had anxiety ... within the hour he watched with his mom, as his Father died. They watched his dad ... dad had pleading eyes, and struggling to breathe. The death certificate never listed any of the 4 cancers bc the war was winning. In the 6 lines provided, the 1st line, the cause of death was "drowning", and the 2nd one said, aspiration of fluids ... and to them, the rest of the lines don't matter bc dad was gone. October 2022 marks the 6 years of his dad passing. Life for all of them have never, EVER been the same. A law suit wouldn't pan out bc the records show the hospitalist had 'authority' to prescribed that drug. The mom hasn't smiled ... she says her husband wasn't just the father of six, and best husband, he WAS and IS her best friend. That dad read bedtime stories, and his eldest son when younger did call out afraid of monsters under his bed. That last night, after they ate, they reminisced of their family memories ... and monsters under the bed 😢😪. The son always told his Father, don't worry dad - I can do, don't apologize dad, it's okay, you've always been there for me, now it's my time dad ... I LOVE YOU DAD ... ....close you're eyes now dad, don't worry or be afraid ... The son did fold dad's clothes and packed up the hospital room. Called the Funeral Home and had to remove his mom screaming and crying from the hospital room hours after his dad passed. He held his mom's hand in the car bc his Father ALWAYS did. No money for a proper burial ... reduced to nothing. Thank you for your review.

A true recognition of the crisis of adult children dealing with declining parents.

The director asked James if he wanted to stop and take a break to compose himself, and James said no keep rollling.
