Just to add my vote for "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive". Patty is a coal miner's daughter, just like her cousin Loretta Lynn. She lived through watching members of her family and loved ones falling to black lung. You will not regret hearing her story in this song.

@@michelleortega1514 No, the best one is where she sings it herself with appropriate accompaniment. Chris rockchurched it up, like he always does. It's fine, but I'd rather hear Patty sing it like she does.

There is a video on here of her doing You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive live for some sort of tv showcase. She spends a solid two or three minutes telling the audience why the song means so much to her and about her family history. Then she proceeds to give probably her best vocal performance ever. It is amazing to watch and actually really informative. The way she uses different mouth shapes or subtle changes in the tension of her jaw to raise and lower notes is crazy.

I'll jump on the "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" bandwagon! The live version is fantastic where she gives her background. It's is almost like Darryl Scott wrote the song with her story in mind.

Cold, dead beatin, two timing, double dealing
    Mean, mistreatin, lovin' heart"

Definitely you'll never leave harlan alive. Patty is my all time favorite country female singer. She has that high lonesome sound that cuts like a knife like nobody else. She is royalty. BTW, she does this same song as a duet with Chris stapleton who does the man's perspective part. She came out of retirement to do that for a Kentucky benefit for those ravaged by natural disasters.

    • @johnsonpaul1914

Add my vote for this song and "You'll never leave Harlan alive" with Chris Stapleton and the "Kentucky Rising" benefit in, I believe, 2022. Patty came out of retirement (since 2009) at Chris's request for this most soulful concert.

@@johnsonpaul1914 They also performed it at the CMA awards. It was a masterclass for this generation of top singers to hear Patty (the applause at the pauses in the singing was just great). IMHO, the best female country singer ever with that piercing high lonesome sound. In her 60s and retired, she still has got it. So best male singer on the planet (any genre) and best female singer...so amazing.

@@joelrubinson9973 I have watched that one also. I guess I like the rising concert because of Morgane's obvious adoration and respect for Patty. Morgane Stapelton is a severely under rated artist in her own right. Both performances are just some of the best music ever.

The steel guitar is producing the high pitched sounds you're hearing. In the hands of a skilled player, it is a wonderful instrument and it can really tug at your heart strings in a sad song. Patty mostly sings Bluegrass and Gospel now but she excels in any genre. A wonderful and sometimes forgotten talent.

No, he's saying sorry because he's so used to saying it to keep the peace, whether he was wrong or not he always was sorry. This is a song about 2 people growing apart, because neither appreciates the struggle of the others life. She only sees her struggle with keeping the home and not being appreciated for the effort, he only his struggle to leave each day, all day to come home to be under appreciated too. they are blinded to each others pain by their own.

You will never leave Harlan alive
That ain’t the Grandpa that I know
How can I help you say goodbye
    Nothin but the wheel.
She has the best most pure voice in country music.

I'll give a rousing thumbs up to those who've suggested Patty's version of You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive. Back in the days when folks wore socks, that song literally (or figuratively) knocked my socks off. And Britt, as much as you love the background story, you must do the live version where Patty tells exactly what the song means to her. It's heartbreakingly beautiful.

you have to read between the lines in this song. it starts out she has all she can stand. she leaves the car, the kids, the keys, the laundry and the grocery list. she doesnt want to do it anymore. she claims he doesnt know he she is, so he shouldnt care if she leaves. BUT, when the husband sees what she has done, he thinks he should call her and apologize. but he doesnt know why. she hasnt told him anything. he goes to work everyday and comes home to her, does what a husband should do. BUT, she doesnt think about him, only herself, so he tells her you dont even know who i am, SO WHY SHOULD I CARE IF YOU GO. its a good song, a sad song, but its also what happens all the time in marriages, the wife cooks, cleans, takes care of the kids while he is at work. she looks at it as if she is at home all the time and he is gone all the time. she only sees it from her side. typical.

That high-pitched bit at the beginning is steel guitar; it can make some amazing sounds, normally goes lower with a more honky-tonk sound. Been there, got the T-shirt. In most situations we (people) tend to be so focused on ourselves, on being the victim, of the things that someone else has done to us, that we often fail to look at the things we've done (or haven't done) that made the situation the way it is. Sometimes it only takes one action, one time where we hurt the other person, one thing we don't remember doing.. that starts the journey down the road to resentment and distancing. I know with me personally.. once someone hurts me.. I find it extremely difficult to ever let that go. If you know someone who is struggling with something, it could be a simple as their weight, don't use that against them, don't make light of it. That one thing could be, to them, a major struggle in their lives, and if you put them down, even jokingly, you could harm your relationship forever. That person may never forgive you for making them fell less of a person.

The version of this song with her and Chris Stapleton is amazing! He sings the man’s view and adds a few runs in. ❤

High notes provided by a pedal steel guitar. Imho the second most beautiful instrument ever. Behind the human voice. I love the song "Nothing But The Wheel".

Sure a well written song. You can close you're eyes and actually see it happening. Unfortunately this song is something too many people have experienced

Great description of Patty's vocals. tough song, "Blame it on Your Heart" is a great one. "How Can I help You Say Goodbye" is another deep touching one of Patty's.

Love this Britt! You would enjoy Patty Loveless, “I try to think about Elvis”. A whole different side to Patty you would like. 😊

If she left the house the way she said she did, then sounds like her leaving, was the luckiest day of the guy's life! 😂

Joining the chorus of recommendations for “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.” Especially the live version from Austin City Limits.
