Devastating Laser Bird - Raven RVN-3L - Mechwarrior Online The Daily Dose

  • Today we take a look at the Raven RVN-3L. This 35 Inner Sphere Light Mech has always been famous for it's ER Large Laser Sniper builds. This time though we use a pair of regular Large Lasers and an additional ER Medium Laser. The reasons for this is that most of the fights happen at about 500 meters anyway and I want to use my ECM to not only cover myself but also my teammates. And therefore I have to be somewhat close to the main force.

    I saw on a video some months ago, a guy was complaining about the introduction time on the videos. I think its great, and I think each mech deserves its own timeframe depending on all the different factors in play on each mech. Youre explaining really well, I dont feel dumbed down and yet as a player on my 4th year it still happenes that I learn something from your explanations.
    TLDR: Keep your style, Im digging it.

      I think it's too long and I skip all of it, as I believe I know how to set up my mech the way I like it. And after awhile the setups are really not that different that it would require so detailed an analysis.

      @David Alan Bates Ya, I understand. You are right, its all quite similar and not hard. I like it anyway, I think I feel a bit like Baradul on his stream, we have a community thing going, its not just pure Mech Porn. I think its super cozy to listen to him talk about the mech :D

      With the daily doses you can almost use it as a tutorial into mech design. Why certain things are done. He has an aggressive playstyle that isn't my cup of tea but I still learn something watching.

    "The top is clear..." and DEAD from full structure less than three seconds later. I feel really bad in one sense but in another that was absolute comedy gold. "Me being killed was unfortunate..." ....but absolutely hilarious in context. LOL!

    I was looking more closely at this a few weeks ago; The heat difference between ER and Large Lasers is just one point. The cooldown is 3.4 vs 3.1 seconds. ER's are effective up to a kilometer vs the Large Laser's 500m.
    I've exchanged LL's with ER's on all of my IS mechs that formerly used them.

    That was a perfect amount of commentary about the build. I loved the games, especially because they weren't stomps or had a DC. Maybe MM is actually doing what it's supposed to do?!?
    I think it has a lot to do with the time of day you are playing = more players at your skill level. Games that highlight the play strategies of the mech in general are very helpful to get a feel of how to go about playing your builds. Stomps or uneven team (i.e. DC's) matches aren't very helpful because you're basically running around just trying to find someone to face-hug to get a quick kill (LOL - I know you don't do that but everyone else does). IMHO you shouldn't include matches like those in your vids.

    Sorry but I have to write it down in my native language:
    Weiter so (y)

    Regarding the explanations: I think they are perfectly justified and fine how they are, if ppl don't want to listen to them they can just skip ahead.
    To make this a little bit easier you could include one of these yellow markers on the timeline for each major part of the video, like for example:
    0 - (video start, talking about the mech loadout)
    1 - skill build
    2 - first match
    3 - first match results
    4 - second match
    5 - second match results

    personally i love the 4x. Its flexible and just a great all round light. I have never had any issues with your commentary. When looking at a build you need to go over all of it, skills just as much as the actual mech. I would suggest either doing nothing different, or if you REALLY want, add the actual match start link in the description.

    if you want an awesome laserboat light take the urbie K9. XL 180, 1 large pulse 4 medium lasers. I love that mech. Also one of the stable builds for the Urbie R60 is 2 large lasers or ER large lasers and 4 machinguns on a XL 180.

    Oh 9.41 He sais: "It is your fault". Actually nope cause as he snipes he moves backwards as the enforcer repositions himself mitigating the damage baraduls hidden raven would have taken. And I ve seen Baradul million times damaging peoples backs. The habbit of sticking behind mechs is meeeh.

  • @michaelheld7601
    @michaelheld7601 6 років тому

    I would always take seismics in that build. Four more points. You are kind of a sniper, flanking all the time. And you are dead if you get jumped because you don't have the weaponry to fight lights. Not taking seismics in that build is a blunder imho.

  • @1228carlito
    @1228carlito 6 років тому

    Baradul the explanation should fit the build. Also, if you can put it in your busy schedule, a video about the skill trees would be great. i don't understand most the the skill trees or their impact on the Mechs, especially when it comes to pitch and yaw. Lastly, if you could do an MRM build on the Archer 2R please, using all the energy hard points that would be awesome.

    Yes, I'm quite sure all of us can understand that is a minor inconvenience.😁
    This is what happens when you give a light mech lots of punch: it turns from an otherwise inconsequential part of the enemy force to an utter nuisance that needs to be dealt with.

    I don't generally watch the whole intro. I'll typically skip to a part with the mech lab to see what the build is, then skip to the start of the battle. However, it doesn't bother me at all that every video has a fairly detailed intro. I do watch them all the way through on occasion. If there was a link in the description to the start of the fighting that might be handy, but I've been doing fine without one.

    I generally listen to the build then skip past the skills straight to the start of the first map. Maybe worth putting some bookmarks in there to link to each section, that way it doesn't matter who likes what, they can get it all. For my part I'm less interested in the skills than in the mech and the game.

    I think your intros are about the right length, overall; you explain what you like about the mech, you explain the skill selections, and then you get into the game. Your in-game commentary is spot-on; timely, appropriate, and always sportsmanlike. On those occasions when you show yourself getting destroyed, you are never salty or denigrating, and you keep right on with the show, using other viewpoints. I wouldn't change anything in terms of format or subject handling.

  • @SorenHall

    Question for you Baradul, why do you almost never get the extra point of heat containment? Referring to the majority of your builds with operations, not just this build. However, for this build getting it would add about 1.5 heat to your max heat if I understand h.c. and heat sinks correctly. Not saying it's more valuable than say heat gen, but that seems like a pretty good pickup for 1 skill point and worth trading off something else for if you're investing that far into operations already. Reasons/thoughts on heat containment?

    Can't say I fancy light mech laser snipers. Your DPS is low, and you are vulnerable to enemy fast lights with higher DPS. I've seen these Ravens pick up 'garbage time' damage and be the last annoying mech the enemy team hunts down much much more often than I see them actually do anything useful on the battlefield. (IMHO, of course). Same goes for ERLL Shadowcats and a few other medium/light laser sniper builds...

    • @Pyrela
      @Pyrela 6 років тому

      Yeah, it usually depends on if they can get really good position(s)if they can do much damage or not. Of course they can be useful if they distract the enemy team and/or are good aims so that they can do low damage but destroy components/get kills with precision attacks.

      In both of those games, Baradul was 2nd highest damage dealer of the match, even in spite of how he handed himself to the enemy in the second one. It's not a fault of the build that people don't know how to use its strengths.

      Right as MM got onto the platform, you can see the shark fin of the Huntsman pop up from below on the corner of the screen. Those predatory mechs carry more than enough firepower to kill a Raven from behind in a single shot, especially since the build has next to no armor in the rear. The Huntsman only needed to do 25 damage to kill the mech where he hit. MM got so focused on that Wolverine in front of him, that he stopped twisting long enough to receive an alpha into his back.

    • @JoshMD2009
      @JoshMD2009 6 років тому +1

      The huntsman that killed him was carrying 4x SSRM4 and 4x SRM4. That is enough to one-shot even some medium mechs in the back at that close range.

      I run mine as a narc bird, and it excels at that. With lrms/atm missile builds being so popular right now it gets a lot of use. I was narcing before it was cool though, and it's a lonley time if no one on your team is lrm/atming. Though just having the info on enemy location can be useful too. I have max engine, ECM, stealth armor, Active Probe, 3 ER med lasers, and a rocket launcher 10. Not exactly a high damage build, but having two Enhanced Arty strikes helps.
      Before that it was very popular sniper mech with two ER Large lasers. Only a light mech so it doesnt use up a lot of tonnage, good speed, good for peeking with the weapon locations. That fell out of favor when the brawling meta took over, but you could certainly still do it.
      Of course Baradul gives you another build.
      With 3 laser hardpoints, 2 missile hardpoints, ECM and AMS capability it offers you fair flexibility in what you want to do, imo. Not usually a heavy hitter though.
      Some negatives is it's an inner sphere mech, so if you run an XL engine you lose one side torso and you're dead. And with it's loooong profile from the side with tiny arms, your side torsos are vulnerable. You also have very long, very shootable legs. If you lose a leg you're as good as dead normally, as with most lights.
      Knowing what you like would make answering easier of course. Let me know if you have any other questions.
