  • VIDEO TUTORIAL shows how to repair the "HDMI Board Error" of an ONKYO TX-NR737 AV Receiver easily and inexpensively. The Error manifests istself as follows: the ONKYO provides no image at the HDMI MAIN output for the TV. Devices on HDMI INPUT are not recognized any more.
The presented repair replaces selected capacitors on the HDMI Board. Due to the high heat in the device, the capacitors age faster and are damaged. The replacement can be carried out quickly and easily.
    The instructions of the Video Tutorial are similarly applicable for devices of the ONKYO TX-NR535, TX-NR636, TX-NR737, TX-NR838, DTR-30.6, DTR-40.6, DTR-50.6, HT-R593, HT-R693, HTR-993, HT-RC-660.
The Video should be of interest to all those who want to make the repair and troubleshooting of the ONKYO AV Receiver easier.
My aim with this video tutorial is to simplify repairs to the ONKYO AV Receiver, to extend the service life of the device and to avoid unnecessary electronic waste.

I've got a Onkyo TX-NR 709 that I got back in 2011. It was already sent out once to Onkyo for the extended warranty offered on it for the No Sound / No HDMI output that plagued these models. A few years back the primary HDMI output failed again. After seeing your video I am tempted to try this and try to revive the primary output. Currently it's still working over the secondary HDMI output which uses a different chipset.

Thank you for your experience ... I am happy if I was able to motivate you ... Perhaps you can tell us afterwards whether you were able to successfully repair the device ... Yes, it is a question of time before the replaced capacitors Fail again due to the high level of waste heat in the housing. In the long term, only an additional fan cooling can help. In the meantime I have installed such a fan cooling in the ONKYO receiver. The temperature in the case is now at an acceptable 30 °C ... I will try to publish a video tutorial in the next few days.

Please, before you change the capacitors, see my second video (ONKYO AV Receiver - How to Repair "HDMI Board Error" Part#2"). The HDMI error can also be traced back to a defective HDMI transmitter. It was like that in my case. Now the ONKYO works reliably again ;-)

Unfortunately, I didn't find any Service Manual in the net for my model and I can't find the correct capacitor to exchange and see if it fixes. Do you have the manual or someone else from a similar model or any other tip to handle this?

A really phantastic work, you have done. I'm the owner of al Onkyo TX-NR906. My problem is the same like you've shown. But the second problem for me, is that there are about 40 capacitors on the HDMI-board. So how can I know or decide which one has to be replaced? The diameter of the capacitor is between about 3 to 6 mm, the capacity 22 to 330 µF. Do I have to change them all? I also would like a answer in german. :-)

I have an issue with my TX NR 626 receiver. The primary HDMI started to fail (no video), but the ARC part still worked. The second HDMI port still worked, but that port doesn't have ARC. Now, a little later, the ARC on the main HDMI port is unstable as well, at times it works and at times it doesn't work.
The HDMI port on the 626 is not exactly the same, but it seems to have some similarities as the positions of the capacitors you mention in the video are exactly the same.
I wonder if this might be related to the capacitors as well

Hey, if the receiver switches itself off immediately after switching it on, an error is detected. The cause can have various causes:
      - defective component is recognized (e.g. if the fan is not recognized, the receiver does not switch on either)
      - defective on the circuit board, which may be related to the "no sound problem". There are a some video instructions available.
      1. You could try to reset the receiver with the key combinations ("CBL/SAT" & "ON/STANDBY" in the Case for TX-NR737) to the factory settings. I assume you have already done that.
      2. You can localise and isolate the error with the integrated DEBUG MODE. I made a video on how to use Debug Mode. U.a. also to test the fan. There are other test options available. Before using the debug mode, it is essential to disconnect the speakers, as the speakers are also tested for maximum volume! The link to the video "ONKYO AV Receiver - How to use integrated DEBUG MODE for COOLING FAN CONTROL" is here: ua-cam.com/video/Xp7ZiVGU6Ig/v-deo.html
I hope I could help you a little
      ------------------------------------
@@malkaandben The capacitors can be the cause ...
The DSP (Digital Signal Processor) is often the cause of the no-sound problem. The microprocessors have temperatures of up to 70 ° C during operation and the contacts at the soldering points loosen over time. The "reballing/reflow" method helps to repair the DSP easily. The soldering points are re-soldered with great heat. Fortunately, I do not have this mistake and have not described the procedure.
The "reballing/reflow" procedure is well described in a variety of other videos ...
Looking back and before I start swapping the capacitors, I recommend testing the DSP and the individual microprocessors with the INTEGRATED DEBUG MODE. I created my own video for this ("ONKYO AV Receiver - How to use integrated DEBUG MODE for TROUBLESHOOTING - Part # 2" - ua-cam.com/video/SbyrOq7Vv8o/v-deo.html).
The procedure is described on position 5:52 in the video.

Just did the test; sadly getting question marks for the K1 (VSP), T1 (VSP2) and R1 (VSP2).
What would you recommend doing in this case? Reballing/reflow method for all three microprocessors, would that be possible or perhaps a lost cause?

    • @RepairUpgrade
      @RepairUpgrade  3 роки тому

@@malkaandben Nice to hear that DEBUG MODE could help a little further with troubleshooting.
I think it is unlikely that all microprocessors detached themselves from the board at the same time. That is why I would personally refrain from REBALLING the three microprocessors.
I rate the ??????????? in DEBUG MODE so that the microprocessor does not respond.
This not responding can be according to my assessment 1. a fault in the microprocessor BUT also 2. a lack of power supply from the microprocessor.
To 1. 'Fault in the microprocessor':
      ------------------------------------------------------
The errors in the microprocessor and on the board can be seen 'with a little luck' with the naked eye. In the case of the HDMI transmitter - I made my own video for this 'ONKYO AV Receiver - How to Repair "HDMI Board Error" Part#2' (ua-cam.com/video/4pEwcBJofXM/v-deo.html) and Position: 04:52 the contacts were colored brown. The processor could be brought back to life with a heat gun thanks to REFLOW. If that doesn't help, the processor can still be replaced.
BUT for this procedure Experience in SMD soldering is required here and it is recommended to have the right professional equipment in the form of a microscope and a soldering station for SMD components. The challenge is also to get the microprocessor individually in the sale. Replacing the microprocessor without equipment can be very costly.
      To 2.
      'lack of power supply':
      ---------------------------------------------
A lack of power supply can be caused by defective capacitors, especially if the capacitor is used to smooth a supply voltage and creates a short circuit in the event of a defect ...
Therefore, replacing the capacitors could solve the problem. The likelihood of troubleshooting is small but possible. The effort and costs are low.
The challenge when replacing capacitors is to find the capacitors with the correct values (capacitance / voltage). The capacitor values are in the service manuals. The service manuals for the ONKYO receivers are available free of charge with a little research on the Internet. Not all values for the capacitors are listed with the values (capacitance / voltage) in the service manuals.
Testing the installed capacitors could help to find the correct capacitance value (voltage should be at least 16 V, ideally 220 V). Some multimeters offer the possibility to measure capacitor values. The capacitors must be removed for this. The measurement takes place at their contacts. The process is also complex but not so costly.
It is important to decide how much effort the device is worth ...
Finally, - and before the device is opened - is it possible to use connections other than HDMI? In my case, I only use the rear cinch connections and only use the HDMI MAIN connection to configure the device after a RESET. For the input of the audio signal I use the optical input and the cinch inputs. For video signals, I go DIRECTLY from the connected devices (DVD player etc.) to the television using an HDMI cable.

    • @RepairUpgrade
      @RepairUpgrade  3 роки тому +2

That does not sound good. It could be a cold solder joint that loses contact when heated and expanded. You should no longer operate the device in this state.
      You have the following options:
      1. Check the capacitance and polarity of the capacitors.
      2. Solder the capacitors again.
      3. Reset the device.
      4. Hope after that everything works again.
      5. If necessary, check the IC using the Integrated Debug Mode. I have created 2 videos for this.
      6. Have you installed ventilation? If not, this is what you should do to increase the life of your device. Check out my other videos on this.

      Hey André,
the capacitors for the devices NR3010 and NR5007 are not known to me. Perhaps the service manuals will help you. You can find these for both device types on the net under the following links:
      - TX-NR3010 (elektrotanya.com/showresult?what=tx-nr3010&kategoria=All&kat2=All)
      - TX-NR5007 (elektrotanya.com/showresult?what=tx-nr5007&kategoria=All&kat2=All)
With the circuit diagrams contained therein and the capacitors of the removed HDMI board, the capacitor values can be determined. I also recommend retrofitting the ONKYO receiver with a fan control, as the error can reappear very quickly. I recently posted my own video about it.

To swap the capacitors I would do the following:
      1) The HDMI board needs to be removed. The capacitors to be exchanged are located on the front and back of the HDMI board.
      2)
The aluminum capacitors are to be replaced. The aluminium caps are easy to recognize with the naked eye by the silver cap. To be on the safe side, next to the capacitors there are also the designations "Cxxxx". The abbreviation "C" stands for Capacitor. "xxxx" for a consecutive number.
      3)
With the designation Cxxxx you can determine the value for capacity and voltage in the service manual. To do this, you use the search function in the PDF document. The value is in the service manual in the circuit diagram next to the capacitor.
      4)
ONKYO has not given the values for all capacitors in the service manual. The background is that it is not assumed that e.g. SMD capacitors can be exchanged.
      Hope that helps you first.
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@@enriqueleon4331 Genau, so etwas brauchst Du.
