  • In this tutorial I demonstrate the 5 strand trick braid. Also called the "Mystery braid" or "Secret plait", it is a powerful braiding technique used to make braided straps such as belts and bracelets.
    Enjoy the tutorial!

I think your presentations on braiding are superior to the other presentations online. All the details are very appreciated. Thank you so much.

Thank you SO much! I watched several other videos but quit before we got very far because they didn't make the starting point clear enough. YOU were very clear on how to start and very clear when to flip the bottom part. And yes on the secret plait, because I grew up calling it plaiting my hair, not braiding but I knew braiding was another word for it.
Now to back it up some and work on the others! I just bought a steel rule die to use in my AccuCut Baby Grande Mark or in my Sizzix Big Shot but I've always done what little leather I've cut with the AccuCut, especially my thinner tooling leather. I have two sizes of the 5 strand and a different leather bracelet die with intricate cuts. I'm SO happy that at the last minute, I changed my order to the 5 strand. I think it looks so much nicer. Thank you SO much for a great video!

Nice work! I did a short piece out of soft deer leather so it was tight, but it worked great!

TY very much. I was just taught the 5 strands but wasn't shown how you put the bottom part through an extra time on the bottom.

Hi Mark, I like how you speak. What other language (or languages) do you speak? Please do not think that I am being rude as I also speak other languages.

Can you show me how to do even strands, i.e. 4, 6, 8 and so on. What is the general rule ( or formula) for counting the braids?

I have a bracelet like this and it appears that one side of it has an extra "twist" to it. Is there a certain way to unbraid it and start over without it ending up a great big mess??

I’ve made a mistake and can’t seem to untangle it! Do you have any tips? I’ve tried to retrace my steps backwards but I seem to be making it worse. I don’t want to start from scratch on another piece of leather. Please help! Thanks
