I read the translation of 3 body problems 2 to 3 years ago. I also watched the Chinese series on the book last year which surprisingly has low views on UA-cam. The most interesting thing about this book is that instead of explaining more about the extraterrestrials, it talks about humanity and human relations. The book is more on human nature and what we believe in rather than the extraterrestrials. Humans with so many flaws yet has a lot of potential for growth.

    Hey there, nice video!
I just want to clarify something that I think is very important and that you unintentionally wrongly explained about the dark forest hypothesis. It’s not really a “shoot first, apologize later” philosophy like you explained, but more a “the less you show, the better it is” philosophy.
According to the dark forest hypothesis, most civilizations come, at some point in their development, to the realization that they have absolutely no idea how an encounter with another civilization would go. And, that uncertainty and fear of the unknown grows so strong that most civilizations decide to evolve “in silence” and not intentionally signal their presence to the world (or the universe to be more specific).
So, it’s not really about killing whoever you encounter on the spot but more about making sure that whoever is out there (if there is anybody) stays clueless about your existence in case they are stronger or technologically more advanced than you and have bad intentions towards your species. In the end, the core idea/emotion behind this theory is not the intrinsic desire of every species to kill others but the primal fear of every civilization to go extinct.
I think this hypothesis, along with the great filter theory, is one of the most convincing and interesting approach to answer the Fermi paradox.

    • @smudged4090

Really cool! Never heard about the Great filter theory! Thank you!

    • @cedricpirnay4289
      @cedricpirnay4289 24 дні тому +41

@@Lilitesen The great filter theory gives a more anthropocentric but equally fascinating approach to this paradox in my opinion. It presupposes two things:
      1. Most intelligent life forms have the desire to grow into an ever expanding civilization as their technology progresses.
      2. All life forms, intelligent or not, have to go through the same general evolutionary process composed of different steps (or levels) separated by “filters”. These filters then act as obstacles that each life form has to overcome in order to reach the next stage of the process. And, the greater the obstacle (or the thicker the filter), the smaller the chances are for a life form to get to the next level.
Now, as I said, it’s a very anthropocentric approach compared to the dark forest hypothesis and its presuppositions are heavily based on the way life has evolved on earth. But, the meat of this theory lies in what it implies. As you can easily deduce from its name, this theory suggests that there is a great filter in the evolutionary process of intelligent life. A filter so great, that the chances of passing it through are infinitely small even when put next to the ineffably gigantic size of the observable universe. If this theory is true, we are in one of those two scenarios:
      1. The nice one: the filter is behind us. We would be the only ones (or amongst the infinitely small minority of life forms) that managed to get this far in the “game of intelligent life”. In which case, our chances of finding extra terrestrial life with intelligence comparable to ours is close to zero because the emergence of intelligent life itself (i.e. humans) would be a literal statistical impossibility. That also means that we have all of the time in the world to explore space and expand. And that as soon as we manage to establish ourselves on multiple planets, we might just become “un-extinctable”. The great filter in this scenario might be the development of multicellular organisms, the invention of language, the discovery of mathematics and science or maybe the emergence of life itself, we wouldn’t know.
      2. The very very bad one: the filter lies ahead of us. To put it simply, that means we are absolutely jacked regardless of what we do because we would in fact not be so special, life itself would not be special and multiple life forms have reached and will continue to reach this stage and further stages of the evolutionary process but, due to the great filter that lies ahead, will never manage to expand into space. In this case, the million dollar question is: Why? What is the nature of this filter that prevents all intelligent life forms from expanding into space? Again, nobody knows but, if it exists, we will inevitably find out. It might be that the laws of physics will eventually put our technological progress to a halt, making it impossible to travel into deep space. Or, maybe every intelligent life form ends up annihilating itself before it manages to expand into space, maybe every intelligent life form ends up creating a weapon that will eventually backfire at them e.g. nuclear weapons, very deadly pathogens, ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence) or even something that our species has yet to discover.
It’s an interesting theory and, unlike the dark forest hypothesis, it brings a lot of questions to the table regarding the future of our civilization.

If you’ve experienced workplace harassment or abuse, you’d totally understand Shu’s perspective. Your reputation is everything. For someone to poach you from a wonderful career just to shit on you later is cruel. Very cruel
I’m not sold on Lin being a good person at all. He’s not imperfect, he’s abusive. Narcissists are good at flattering you (it’s a typical fawning response to reel you in) and then they switch. You become enemy #1 for some innocuous reason, and often they’ll make sure others join in on the abuse. That’s a key trait - slandering your reputation and character so others abuse you and and you have nowhere to turn.
Workplace abuse is bad in America. But it’s way more common in Asian countries, and often the hierarchal structure makes things super intense. It’s cultural - no way someone is subjected to that and comes out unscathed.
Tragic and completely unnecessary death across the board.

At least from this story the company seems to give him a lot of chance for him to redeem himself and all he can come up with is to release a product that will tarnish the company's reputation. Lin not giving him his annual bonus and brought Zhao into the company is an invitation for Shu to leave with dignity instead of firing him which will effect shu's record poorly, yet he chose to just, kill his boss? A hospital or emergency room in Australia recently put out a statement begging people to stop bringing venomous snakes to the hospital. Don't risk getting bit, just know what kind of snakes are venomous in your area and remember what bit you.

  • @theilluminati682
    @theilluminati682 24 дні тому +338

⚠IMPORTANT⚠ If a venomous snake bites you, don't waste time trying to catch it, doctors won't be able to identify the snake anyway. They take a swab of the venom residue around the bite and figure out how to treat you by that.
That also means don't suck the venom out, (it doesn't work) and don't wash the wound.

It's because the doctors have to know what kind of snake bit you to give you the right antidote.

The book technically deals with it a lot more for sure!
But yes there is much to think about with the show itself, although I would add that the English adaptation has some differences from the novels that novel fans have not been a fan of… Which does happen often, but here it’s also because there’s specifically some cultural stuff that completely gets missed (with a bit of even whitewashing) in the Netflix version.
With that being said, there is also another adaption that many of the novel fans enjoy, which is the cdrama version from Tencent called _Three Body._
It’s slower and less “grandiose” than the Netflix version, but many still praise it for both its faithfulness and even some of its changes, as well as its presentation-both of its visuals _and_ its ideas.

As a lover of sci-fi and fantasy, I find it really strange that you think that sci-fi doesn't have plots that are that relatable. Literally everything you've said about how all of the famous people think this book is a commentary on humanity, is such a common theme in sci-fi!
I find that sci-fi typically uses futuristic themes to discuss these current and future problems (whether that be environmental, social, political, psychological, philosophical, etc), and from what I can tell they tend to go a lot deeper into exploring them than media that focuses on the current day representation of these problems, because of the futuristic themes they go generations or millennia into the future to see how these problems can affect us as a society.
To whoever is reading this, if you're not currently into sci-fi but these kinds of topics and exploration into these themes interests you, give sci-fi a go! Unlike fantasy, sci-fi focuses on our current and potential future scientific understanding of things, so even if what it portrays isn't accurate with our current scientific abilities, it still tries to approach these problems from a realistic overview of our scientific understanding.
Seriously, the amount of times sci-fi has opened my mind to different concepts and understandings of different scientific topics is mind-blowing! I've loved sci-fi before I ever realised it was commonly used this way (because I fell in love with the gene as a kid, so I'll never not enjoy it), but this exploration of different scientific topics has created a deep love and appreciation in me for the genre!

The "Unlike Fantasy" part is where you miss the mark my friend. Fantasy is an umbrella word for arguably the WIDEST genre. It's the first wildly imaginative way humans used to explore moral dilemmas. It was also the first literary/art form used for social commentary and especially political and religious criticism. There's a reason Fantasy is very rooted in oral traditions. Heads be rolling down if the source could be traced.
Today, you can find it all, even some dry scientific concepts. That's what Fantasy-Sci-Fi is for. You might be interested in checking Fantasy recommendations for Sci-Fi readers on Booktube.

Sci-fi is such an effective window to explore issues that would just be too controversial and feel too raw in a “realistic” setting. It’s one of my favorite genres.
That being said I think Stephanie meant that the premises of sci-fi stories usually aren’t relatable. I mean, the idea of an alien army invading Earth is pretty out there at this point in time.

3 Body Problem Netflix was a great series and also refreshing. The dark forest theory is chilling and it seems realistic because it’s also reflects human nature. Knowing there could be other civilizations in space just as violent and selfish is scary. Probably would’ve been better if majority of the main characters were Chinese because it holds significance in the story.

Lin sound like a guy we desperately need in Hollywood. A guy that want to make something as close too the book as possible. A guy that is willing to make a movie that is not their own (political) view of the world, but to entertain people and be as close to the source material as possible. Yes he failed once, because of that dumb greedy couple, but he went back to the drawingboard to make a better product for the fans and to do the story justice. Hollywood has totally forgotten to entertain people. Hollywood now are just checking boxes and cater to weird people on twitter. Thank god that Amazon didn't get to make this show. They would have ruined it like they did with Rings of Power.

I have worked with someone who would yell at you in front of everyone and curse at you for a mistake. He wasn't even my boss and others in the office just said it was his thing and put up with it. He ran a great worker off. He called him names and said he would never do well in this field and the guy just quit. I talked to him later and he said he just couldn't take it anymore.
