Annie went to my high school and graduated a couple years before me. I vividly remember my teachers being so devastated when she died. My senior year my AP science teacher read a letter Annie wrote to future students about working hard to go to school and earning scholarships. She had applied for scholarships for an hour or two every day and was awarded over a hundred thousand dollars by the time she got into college. I was a senior only about six months after she was murdered and my teacher cried the whole time she read the letter. Annie seemed like an incredible person!

I was her cousin, when I was with my aunt all she did was talk abt how hard she worked everyday to set herself up for a bright future, she took a lot of internships just in high school and she was always so smiley and never lost her smile
My aunt took care of her for most of her life (more than her own mom) and grieves her everyday

My theory is rather simple: he was indeed secretly obsessed with her, he found out she was going to marry, he went and tried to convince her of a pre marital adventure, maybe even using that as a manipulative tactic (do this and I will clean the cages properly for you). She obviously rejected his ridiculous proposition and he raped and murdered her, with no prior premeditation. He truly doesn't seem like a smart psychopath, just a disgusting sociopath, with the sufficient amount of narcissism to not admit that his motives were incredibly stupid. He deserves to be in jail for the rest of his pathetic existence.
I think there's also a possibility that he was simply so obsessed with Annie that he could not stomach the idea that she would not be coming into work for a while until after her honeymoon and he wouldn't get to see her at work for so long. He received that mass email she sent out to everyone at work that day saying that was her last few days at work before her wedding that weekend and honeymoon after, so he might've thought "it was now or never", and went in fully with the intent of s-assaulting her. He might not even have said anything to her, or confessed his feelings to her, or proposed a pre-marital romp. He might've just ambushed her and went straight in to assault her because he didn't want to wait any longer. Maybe he have even had the twisted idea of wanting to assault her before her wedding, before her husband gets to consummate their wedding with her. Perhaps some twisted idea of wanting to possess Annie before her husband gets to. I just wouldn't be surprised if he went straight into his depraved acts without it escalating from a confession of his feelings/rejection from Annie. He could've had a lot of desire for Annie built up from his obsession for her over a long time and it finally became unbearable upon reading that she was going away to get married and go on her honeymoon.

He may have told his lawyers this, and they in turn may have warned him not to reveal this in order to shorter his sentence (premeditated counts for longer sentences, impulse crimes can be more easily written off as a lack of sanity in the moment(

The dna being preserved for 3 years and ending up on her body is scary, if the guy wasnt dead there could've been a different outcome. I wonder how many people are charged with crimes because of a freak dna situation
yeah right, it's really scary that just because some DNA left behind accidentally years ago can make you a murder suspect.
Reminds me of a woman who had her kids taken away after she applied for welfare. They had DNA tested her family and it came back that she wasn't a match to any of the four children. Her lawyer ultimately turned to the medical community and a clever specialist told them to draw blood from the opposite arm. This test proved she WAS the mother. Turns out she had an absorbed parasitic twin where they had originally drawn blood. True story.

I think that’s why tiny amounts of DNA should not always make you a suspect. Like Amanda Knox. There was a tiny amount of her DNA on the victims clothes because they were room mates. Doesn’t mean she killed her.
Hearing that part of the video made me instantly remember the time I cut myself pretty good while sweating intensely in the middle of putting the final touches on a floor for a new dental clinic. Fingers crossed I dont end up in an investigation 😅
As a pregnant woman, the mother’s speech at the funeral broke my heart in a million pieces. I can’t imagine a deeper sorrow. May God give her strength to keep going.

That trauma bond is STRONG in Jennifer for him to still have his narcissistic claws dug into her after he openly admitted to not just cheating on her, but SAing and murdering a girl. Like she really doesn't think that could have been her? He made, and continues to make, a complete fool of her and she allows it... That's just wild.

Steph, I watch a lot of true crime, but you’re the only one who consistently makes me cry. The way you describe the victims and their loved ones is so deeply empathetic.
I know the case inside and out but Stephanie’s additional information about Annie’s life, personality, and family brought such a personal touch. It was very well done.
he did this in the middle of the day when other people were around and no one noticed anything. that's one of the craziest parts of this to me ... he murdered a woman and SHOVED HER INTO A WALL and no one had any idea for DAYS.

She was in a Yale research centre during the day, among so many people, wearing proper or covered clothes and was doing her f u c k i n g job and she still got killed 🫠
Labs are very sound proofed, not only that, giving it is an Ivy League research lab here, it would be a surprise if a researcher pull an all nighter or two doing researches.
Looking at the photos of the inside, everything looks heavy, solid, with no windows on the doors, and some rooms seem to be like a room in a room. So, it's probably pretty quiet and hidden. Labs seem similar to like an industrial site or factory.
im a grad student, there’s 7 levels of labs and 400 grad students and it’s been 2 years, i rarely, if ever bumped into another student at faculty other than those sharing my lab

This is kind of disgusting but my brother had a rat that had babies and the babies ended up eating their mother 😢. I’m not sure if she died of natural causes or they killed her, but I can’t look at rats the same way anymore.

It seems some competitive men hate losing but hate losing to women far more than they can admit. It seems like Annie was a reminder that she might be a cage cleaner today but she'd win the Nobel prize tomorrow. And he'd still be a cage cleaner. His comment about her not cleaning the cages well speaks to the fact that he was competing with her in his mind and well she was going on with her life like he didn't exist. I don't think he had any romantic feelings for her at all. I think he genuinely hated her and wanted to destroy her the only way he knew how. 😢

Men like that are systematically raised to view women as something they’re entitled to and not as individuals with their own desires and dreams. It doesn’t help that the entertainment industry for so long has only catered to men’s interests and attraction for so long that it indirectly objectified and erased women as a result. Now we have men (especially younger men who were born and raised in this kind of culture) who have a fucked up idea of what women are supposed to be in regards to them and their relationships.

This is a pretty awful case. Beyond just the events, it's hard to believe that in a place with surveillance, no weapons, and in a well known lab, could have this happen. It sadly is just everywhere
Mannnnnn no field of work either male-dominated or female-dominated is not safe for women 🫠 and then men ask why we need separate coaches for women in trains and metro, only women's gyms, only girls' schools and only women's PG/Hostels. Having a reservation is not a privilege it's a safety measure to keep men out of women’s spaces. All these cases make my blood boil.
My best friend and I were literally talking about this yesterday. She gets hit on all the time at her job in security. When I was working it was the same . Why the can’t we just go to work and do our jobs without being harassed. I’m there to make a paycheck not get a date.
Sexual harrasment in the workplace is against the law and taken very seriously. I've seen two people get fired at my job for it. If you present the problem to your superior, with proof, and it's not addressed, then you are in for a big payday, and any lawyer will scoop that case up quickly.
This story hit me more than I expected. I finished my masters last year and I remember all the days I spent alone inside a lab working on my research. How I would leave without fearing anything. I always thought I was safe inside my university. I bet Annie was just like me. She was doing what she loved and must've been so thrilled with her upcoming wedding. I am grieving her death as if she was a friend of mine. I hope she found peace and love wherever she is now.
Same here. I now look back on the late nights and weekends I spent in the lab "alone" without knowing if I was actually alone in the building. How reckless and dangerous that was..

He killed her because he knew he could never measure up to her. She was way smarter and more intelligent so he felt inferior. I mean, he was hired through nepotism and most likely wouldn't even have been hired without the connections. His sentence was not enough but at least he'll sit and rot in jail for a while. I am just so sadden for her family, you can tell they were close and so proud of her. Truly a loss.
Such a horrific case :( Would love to hear the case of Veronica Lin (a swedish woman killed in 2003 by a chinese billionare) rotten mango once covered Wang Sicong, son of Wanda group founder, he's the nephew of Veronicas killer. Three countries are involved in the story (Sweden, china and thailand) and it's complex and incredibly interesting but for some reason very hidden away not public knowledge. I think this is a story that too deserves some spotlight.
Cases like this never cease to boggles my mind. How many women out there just be doing what they're best at, working, studying, but then get their lives taken away so suddenly. For no reason at all except sick fantasies. It's not fair. The fact that even campuses need to have a tight safety system builds to fight and prevent violence against women is crazy.
The sickos that carry out acts like this don't even see women as human. We have to make campuses and workplaces more safe cause those psychos are not gonna leave women alone so easilly.

@@l05555isnt just about mental health some of the time. Its that rush of adrenaline and overwhelming sexual feelings with a burning rage that can last for days on end. Its like a drug to them.
What really stood out to me in this case was the dog handler. The fact that they’re such a great team that even though the dog alerting made no sense to the handler, they still believed their dog and checked it out gave me goosebumps.
I do search and rescue with dogs too and the amount of times I see handlers ruin shit just because they don’t trust their dog is crazy. We should all trust our dogs more because they know so much more than we can even grasp.
like same thing with dogs can smell cancer. like yes out of 100 women only 81 will get sniffed out that they have it but around 19/20 of them actually won’t but it’s still fascinating to me that they can tell! (i’m using numbers and not percentage) obviously dogs will make mistakes here and there just like we do. but they can always tell when something is happening faster than us most of the time. which blows my mind everytime i hear something like this dog finding annie.
@@_joslynjohnson If there have been experiments like that done with dogs, I am wondering if they follow up with the women who were identified as having cancer but turned out to not have it. Maybe it was too early at the time to be detected? I remember learning about a woman who was able to with a > 90% rate smell Alzheimer's disease on people from a stage so early so that they often weren't even showing any symptoms until a year or more later. She basically had 100% accuracy with ones that were already showing symptoms.
And the reason they knew was she kept saying her husband stunk and had this terrible smell that he could not get rid of, but no one else could smell it. They thought she was crazy, and didn't even make the connection until her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and then she smelled it on someone else and made the connection. His stench got stronger and stronger to her over time as the disease progressed.
Either way, I suspect that dogs can help us in that way because I'm sure that's not the only disease that has a specific smell that the vast majority of humans are not able to detect, but a dog could. It's of course extremely difficult to pinpoint though since in order to train a dog, you have to know that there is a smell for them to detect and train them to identify it.

Thank you for cropping the photo of the fiancé out of the video’s main image. Very respectful move and it made the case coverage immediately feel more focused on the victim’s story of what happened to her without accidentally automatically assuming the soon-to-be husband had been involved in any way.
Yet another bright beautiful woman taken away because a man couldn’t control his urges. He really took her life for a second of gratification. I don’t understand how someone can care so little about human life.

as an asian woman and an international student who's currently at university, this story hit really hard. it really reminded me why every time a girl jokes about how they'd rather be in a forest alone with a bear than a man there's some truth behind it. it always shocks me how so many young women are betrayed by men around them that they trust and end up being harmed in cold blood without a single care for their dignity. i've never felt so emotional at the end of a story like this. i know it's been years since this case but it's never going to be less heart-wrenching over time. raymond isn't even worth being compared to a rat; rats are known for being intelligent, emotional and affectionate animals that care for each other. i hope he and his fiance never find rest in their souls
I have literally been harassed, talked down to, and in 1 case literally followed by creepy males at my job as well. We literally cannot even do our job in peace. It's fucking disgusting.

As a vietnamese person planning on studying medicine abroad like Annie, this case infuriates me in a way i can't properly describe, i see myself in certain aspects of Annie Le to the point that i feel as if my anger is stemming from within my very being, 2053 is surely going to be in interesting year.
That poor woman. It breaks my heart to think how terrified she must have been, and for her fiance who was so mutually excited to get married. This world has too much evil in it :( what a beautiful and terrible place.

Raymond Clark definitely comes off as a spoiled, entitled kid. He was never told no and allowed to get away with bad behavior. He killed Annie because, for once in his life, someone told him no, and he threw a tantrum like an immature toddler who was told, "No, you can't have candy."
His father's statement at Annie's murder trial tells me everything I need to know. His family definitely enabled him and babied him his whole life.
I bet it really sent him over the edge to know she was about to wed someone more accomplished than him too. I can imagine all the hours of p*rn he consumed starring girls who look like Annie, while his fiance was under the same roof. That may have spurred him on to violence.
It's disgusting how his family and fiance have allowed him to humiliate all of them and they still support him. They probably coddled and overindulged him instead of teaching him impulse control and how to live in reality. So sad.

oh my god, I feel so bad for Annie, for her family, friends and fiancé. This is so horrible to lose someone as amazing as her, she sounds like such a wonderful person to be around with. Looking at her pictures with Jonathan makes me tear up a little, they look so wonderful together and could have lived such a happy life... May you rest in peace, Annie.. remember that you were and are loved by so many people.
This was my cousin, her death shook our whole family and her brother never moved on. It was actually so disheartening seeing this all unfold in real time and hearing the sobs during her funeral..

No woman should ever have to go through this, whether she was going to make a big change in the world or a small one or none at all. She had a great value in a lot of peoples' hearts and will never be forgotten. May she rest in peace and may her family and friends recover from the trauma of losing a loved one. The reaction of the murderer's family especially father was so disturbing you can almost tell where he got his narcissistic and self centered personality from. I will never and i don't think anyone will ever forgive that murderer for not only SAing the poor victim and murdering her and treating her body like its garbage to be shoved around, but also for not allowing her family to at least know the reason behind her unfortunate death which would haunt them forever. The fact that he’s not going to be locked up until the day he dies makes me as a woman want to cry, scream, and yell. A couple of years ago, a person who shared a name with my brother stole a car & I think committed s****de by cop. He had some physical traits in common with my brother too. As soon as I heard about it, I went to my parents' house (where my brother was staying at the time), and dozens of people were calling them, but he was with them the entire time. He still gets some backlash for having that name, though it's not his fault or yours that terrible people sometimes share a name with good people. Best wishes to you!

I remember Googling myself as a teenager, and one of the search results was a manslaughter case in the Philippines involving a dude who not only shared my name at the time (I filed a legal name change when I was 21) but also lived just down the road from my grandparents farm. Luckily I was a toddler when this case happened.
My mother had been murdered when I was around 5 years old on thanksgiving night. My family and myself have been in countless news reports on television and articles in the newspaper. I really yearn to know and understand what really happened to her. Sadly after a few years of the police and private investigators looking into this case it was declared a cold case. Leading to not knowing what happened I don’t think I’ll ever stop searching for answers. But it would be honestly a miracle for more covering on my moms story and for that I love what you’re doing and can only thank you enough. Spreading light on stories that need to be shared for people to hear! I get upset and feel guilty and grief at times. And I can because someone took the other half of me and I mean TOOK! Her from me . Days like Mother’s Day and birthdays I feel robbed of my childhood and even now. I only have the memory of saying goodbye to her. Karma can be scary but it’s out there and it’ll find those who killed kalya tolson! 💓

I can't see you why the father said he was proud of his son for taking responsibility. His son didn't take responsibility. He was caught and couldn't weasel his way out of it. He never confessed when she was missing. He tried to hide the evidence until the last second.

Hi Steph! This is a case that occured a couple months ago in Madagascar. I haven’t seen many videos about it since Madagascar is a pretty unknown and unfamiliar country to other countries. This happened in the area of Ambohidratrimo. It’s about a girl who was lured out of her house by a family friend and murdered. Only her body was found with no head. Later, her head was found in Mahajanga (keep in mind that Ambohidratrimo is a little on the other side of the country from the coastline of Mahajanga). I apologize if I can’t provide any other information about this, and I know it might be difficult to find info about this case online, but I would really appreciate it if you covered this case. Reminds me of Allan Watts parents, THEIR impact statement was "we love you and we forgive you". Sure it's hard to accept that YOU raised a killer but in front of the victims loved ones is so ignorant and insensitive.
Stephanie, thank you for telling Annie's story. One of my best friends in college grew up with Annie. I remember the week of her disappearance so vividly--back in those days, we would log into our laptops and read online articles with updates. As crazy as it sounded, we hoped and prayed that she had just gotten cold feet. In response to the question about her cell phone, you have to remember the year. That was a time before smartphones were really that ubiquitous, and I remember often leaving it in my bag all day and never looking at it. We just used our phones to make calls and texts. I still think about Annie often and what she would be doing now. It's a tragedy whenever someone young dies, but her death and the circumstances of it have truly haunted me.
As days go by I just cannot help but shudder at the thought of how most victims were killed by their own spouses, family, friends or acquaitances. It’s mostly someone YOU KNOW and trust that backstabs you…

The problem is I think most people have already known it, but they choose to deny it. If you talk about females getting rape all the time, there will be those individuals who come and will say males are too getting those treatments. At the end of the day, there are still no measurements to prevent all of these. It happened, the case closed, it happened, and the case closed. Sometimes, justice didn't even serve.

It’s chilling to hear this story again just as we lived through it. This was actually my cousin. I remember I was still in college at the time and was attending evening classes. It sent the chill down my spine when it actually happened in the family.
Someone told me that Stephanie Soo is talking about us. I just finished listening to this and I get emotional listening to it. I remember one of our cousins dropped out of classes that semester out of fear. I was taking evening classes in college and was always looking left and right when I’m in school. I remember we were taught in the family to wear shoes that have hard heels, and always walk with a purpose to make noise so there are always people paying attention to us for our safety. There are still many questions left unanswered. Even till this day, we still looked up to my cousin as the epitome of educational goal in the family.
It is still sad to think of it. My father told me to always help her mother whenever she asked. Her mother was the one who sponsored my family to the US, and part of the reason why I am where I am today. All her hope for a better life was wiped out over night. It maybe foreign to other culture but in the Asian culture, parents do what they can for their children in hope that the children can help themselves and the family in the future. Being immigrants we are often handicapped and have to try many times harder to get ahead.
Even now that many of us lead a stable life, it still stings to think about what could have been if this event did not happen.
And No, my aunt did not sue because of money, no amount of money can compensate the loss that she suffered, of what could have been.

I’m a grad student in biomedical research. Trust me, we all hate that we need animals for experiments. I personally don’t work with them because I couldn’t sacrifice animals (what we call euthanasia for research purposes). At my school, and many others, that’s done personally by a grad student and techs maintain the colonies. But I also know animal work is the next closest thing to humans, and how else would we see if treatments work or if they’re dangerous? It’s a debate to be had for sure, but until we’re able to grow organs in a lab easily, I don’t see another way. It’s horrible and we all hate it.
It really is a double edged sword, isn’t it? Definitely agree that it’s a well debate, a great debate in fact.
I'm not majored in biology and correct if I'm wrong but, as far as I know, not even growing organs in a lab would be enough to get away with ALL the necessity of testing animals. You can genetically modify entire generations of rats and, since they life spam is WAY shorter than that of a human being, see the effect in a LARGE population over GENERATIONS in a very short amount of time. Thing that wouldn't be possible in humans.
I’m a zoologist and while seeing all the potential benefits, there’s definitely not enough restrictions or advocation towards the well being of each individual animal. There should be much more revision on what’s deemed as an experiment that requires animal testing. (I.e. the on-going john Hopkins owl/adhd study)
@@JohnnyLynnLee True. Growing organs doesn't solve the necessity for in-vivo experiments. You need to see what happens in a whole functioning living body. For example, often times when we alter a gene to study something, we discover it affects other functions in the body.
@@DragonHeart29 All I know about that is from when an anima rights movement stole some animals from a research center in Brazil and a science communicator, a biologist (more precisely a paleontologist), called Pirula (actually a nickname, form "Canal do Pirula") made a series I think of 3 videos (20-30 minutes long each) of videos explaining what is really this of testing in animals. One of the videos addressed the argument of "why not testing in prisoners?" and there's besides all the ethical thing this of CONTROL, N, and the life spam of a human being. Why contrary to some myths people don't use the "results' of the "tests' the nazz.ys and the Imperial Japan did during world war not only because of moral concerns but because those weren't rally scientific tests, just sadism. Any "data" collected from that would mean nothing anyway. It's really sad but it's VERY hard to eliminate completely the need for testing in animals.

But I don’t think that murder is a man’s primal instinct. Maybe in the case of other men and aggressions from other MEN. Stephanie there is a strange case that is one going in my city that I hope you will cover or please look into it. Mica Miller soon to be ex-wife of a pastor recently unalived herself or she seemed to. Investigator’s of this case recently discovered that the pastor/husband groomed her since she was 10 (he would’ve been 24 at the time) and that she called police on him multiple times saying she felt scared of him and was being harassed as he slashed her tires and put AirTags on her car. Before she served him divorce papers he was cheating (not sure if he was caught or not) and even text the lady he was cheating on her “secy” messages minutes after he found out about her death. Investigators also find it odd that the pastor just happened to be leaving the city/state at the time if her death. Many people are suspecting that he may have hired someone to kill her. She made a 911 called moments before her death asking the operator to track her location so her family can know where she died/where her body will be. Her family and friends are looking for answers and have started #FreeMica to raise awareness on this case please spread it around. The FBI have recently got involved with her case and suspect the it wasn’t a suicide.
*Update* The news release that Mica stated in a letter that if she ever is found with a bullet in her head it was not her but JD her husband.

As a veterinary professional who works with research animals, I thank you for doing your best to be neutral and empathetic towards lab workers. It’s a very emotionally, mentally and physically taxing job and people who are uneducated about the complexities of the job can be quite cruel. I couldn't help but smile when you were describing Annie. She sounds like an amazing friend. It breaks my heart knowing that she was taken from the world so suddenly and so disrespectfully. That worm has absolutely no care for anyone other than himself, and I hate the way he reacted to his crime in court. Sure he took "responsibility" by admitting what he did. But he obviously had no remorse for Annie or how her loved ones were effected by her death. Disgusting.

The person who did it was smiling in court today because they were about to have them sign a plea deal of assault and battery of an aggravated nature instead of attempted murder. The court has only been referring to her as “victim”, she goes by Rave, I can’t link her instagram here my comment keeps getting taken down

i think if the dad had ended his impact statement with something like "please sentence him to the maximum time possible, we believe he is a danger to others and are disowning him from our family" then the victim thing might have worked better (being so upset that his son took away... his son.... from his life like that).
like "we are so upset he could do something like this, he is not the person we raised him to be and we are heartbroken for the victim and her family, and deeply saddened by our own loss of the son we thought we had" could have been a lot better

This is the first time I've been early to an episode. I just wanna say bless your heart for covering these sorts of cases, it's very important to bring attention to violence against marginalized groups so that governments can't sweep them under the rug and pretend it didn't happen. The victim's story deserves to be told, and they deserve to be respected and remembered. Too often, no justice is served on these cases because they don't get attention.

they are oftentimes targeted by people who hold onto fascistic beliefs SPECIFICALLY because they’re a marginalized person in an area of high standing. We have a good chunk of people who’ve continually inherited their wealth throughout the generations because of their families privileges (*cough cough by maybe getting their money by less than moral means) Now that they’re all starting to realize their generation is perhaps the last cog in that specific kind of inheritance (one tied to race, blood family, and an imagined social hierarchy) we’re starting to see a lot of young men from those backgrounds glorifying and turning to violence as a sort of “holy crusade.”
It’s not what it is, but its what many facists believe it to be. What they don’t get is that everytime one of them commits a murder it makes them more and more obvious to the public. one day they’re going to be stupid enough to start claiming it in broad daylight. Like by all means, prove the rest of the world right by showing us how vile their intentions really are

In my opinion, for a plea deal to even be accepted, the defendant ought to reveal the motive as well as the location of the body (if it hasn't been found). The loved ones are owed to know.
this case was so frustrating! after the cameras they should have checked the card logs! 55 times is insane! the investigators seemed like amateurs 😢
Thought crossed my mind about them checking those cards. But I think so much goes into an investigation. They have to eliminate the seemingly most obvious options as they work their way through to solving a crime. Entering a particular room multiple times at the start of the investigation might not have necessarily been a red flag at that time.

I think they did not think she had been murdered when they started the investigation. They probably thought there was probably an unsecured ( no cameras) exit or she was in an area ( locked in, unable to get out, fallen, maybe unconsc ious, etc.) at first. In other words, they were canvassing the building.
They probably didn't think much of it. At first, it was assumed that an outsider did it, and even then they probably didn't think to look at everyone's card records because nothing really showed up on cameras inside the building. It all happened really fast, they found her around 5 days after she was reported missing and maybe one of those was spent assuming that she somehow left.
You have to think about all of the searches of the building they did, that's 5+ entire large floors of labs and rooms they had to search through and get access too, people to interview etc. Then the searches they did in the trash to look for body parts, then combing through hours of footage. I'm honestly kind of impressed they solved it so fast. This had potential to be unsolved for a way longer.
this case happened in my town, I was about 9-10 when it happened, and I remember the whole city was hectic for those five days cops, people, and even schools were on high alert too.
As a law school student. I used to study forensics for crime scene procedures. I must say the smell of the body was one and only, difficult to describe but once u experience u’ll never forget it.
