When Christmas of 1964 came around I got my first GI Joe. Sometimes I wish I still had it today along with the foot locker and the other accessories. I also remember joining the GI Joe fan club, getting an iron on patch which my mom ironed on a t-shirt then also getting a set of dog takes to go with it and the certificate saying I'm in the fan club. Those were the days still wish I had all that stuff. 👍🇺🇸☮️

This is awesome! I love the part when you remove his boot according to instructions. Many other funny and instructive scenes. I was 7 when I got my first GI Joe, in 1968. I bought it with a 5-dollar bill my grandmother sent me for my 7th birthday, and I got change back from that $5. : D

I grew up in a home that me and my Joe would go on adventure after adventure. Joes were and are for me bigger then a action figure. They are part of me and 1 of the best parts. I look at my Joe, which I have and I smile and remember good times. And sadly a lot of people these days really need that. They have never made a great action figure like Joe and I am damm proud to have been in that generation. Your points are more then valid and I agree, thanks for the time travel it made me go get Joe off my shelf and remember. Everybody be safe and take care see you on the next adventure...

I grew up in the 70s in RI, birth place of Gi Joe. We had friends with relatives that worked in Pawtucket for Hasbro. Adventure Team GI Joes everywhere in my neighborhood. There wasn’t a boy to be found that didn’t have one. GI Joe was the greatest toy of my childhood.

Great review! My brother and I got some of the 12 inch G.I. Joe's during the late 70's. I had the yellow hair action solder and my brother had the Land Adventure. We also collected the Fisher Price Adventure People and then RAH G.I. Joe. During the years I always liked the 12 inch Joe's and wanted them. Guess that's why I collect them today. I have 2 of those footlockers I did a review of them on my channel.

Thanks for appreciating ower generation of Joe enthusiast's, I still have my four of Joe's plus my brothers Joe. I loved that when my kids grew up they were producing the 12 inch Joe's again so I collected for myself and my boys. They each had around twenty different Joe's a piece and so many vehicles, motor bikes etc. When I started collecting I bought the unusual Joe's like the medal of Honor recipients, presidents and the ones I could find. Between my collection and my boys we have around a hundred Joe's, all of mine MIB but I kept good watch on my boys Joe's so they still have their equipment. Anyways I would appreciate it if you could send me a friends request, I'm not really good with those type of things. Thanks.

I as born in 1970 so I got to experience both eras of GI Joe. My older brother gave me his adventure team GI Joe with equipment and an older military GI Joe.They were my favorite toys until the relaunch in the 3 and 3/4 inch scale in the early 80's. I was all in because as much as I liked the Star Wars movies I didn't care for the toys. I collected GI Joe until my late teens. It's a fun hobby and I collect both lines today. I don't know about the future for GI Joe. Hopefully Hasbro can reinvent it as a toy for kids. They seem to focused on making stuff for collectors and the problem with that is that stuff that's made to be collectible ain't fun for kids so it's never really a collectible later on.

I've always found it interesting how Hasbro ended up going down the exact same path twice with the brand as it started to peter out. Both the original line and the 80s line had to resort to a cyborg (Mike Powers/Robo-Joe), aliens (The Intruders/Star Brigade) and a slight rebranding with scale change (Super Joe/Sgt Savage) as things wound down the final year or two.

Great review!! I remember playing with the 12" joes. My brothers had the yellow 6x6 vehicle and the fuzzy head joes. You made a very good point, about GI Joe, pioneering the way future action figures would articulate, thanks for the memories. I just watched this review and it was great! I was into GI Joe from just a couple of years of the military ones to the first few years of the Adventure Team. Who knows what the future of the toy line may be. Would be great to see kids not playing video games and spend hours in the fresh air playing with toys like these. I'm sure you did with your Joes as much as I did with mine. I even introduce my son to both versions and he still has them so he can pass them on when he has kids.

The 'Sea Explorer' Boat from Adventure people was my Joe's primary Water Craft up until I got the Devil Fish. It had a very cool glass bottomed jet powered thingy. Without it they would have been stuck on the Tactical Battle Platform as I did not own any other vehicles that were water capable (apart from Cobra Ones). Its a huge benefit of having multiple toy lines in the same scale.

Great video. I had several Joes back in the 70's greatest toy I ever had. All the kids on the block had at least one and so you just divided up the kids into sides so Joe never needed a real enemy. That, I think, is the problem most collectors do not realize today. We didn't play with our Joes alone in the bedroom (unless we were sick) so we didn't need a whole lot of them and an extra enemy that we got the story line from some TV show. We got our Joes out and played to together and thought up the story line ourselves. Joe came as an astronaut, as a jungle explorer, as a pilot, as a fireman etc. On his off time he was dating Barbie, beating up Ken and just plain saving the world. I also had a 12" black knight with all the armor and horse to go with him (which was a hit with my sister's Barbie) but for the life of me, I cannot find anything on him at all - he fit in well with Joe and my Mom even made civilian clothes for them both.
P.S. We hated Kung-Fu-Grip because the fingers always broke off after a sort time.

I actually really agree with you with a lot of your views on how GI Joe could work in the future. Your comment on how the future of GI Joe will likely be different from ours like ours was different from our parent’s version reminds me of when The Rise of Cobra came out and a lot of people would complain that it wasn’t exactly like the old cartoons and toy line and I thought that was the point. That this was the next generation of GI Joe. (Mind you it could’ve been done better)
The multimedia thing is true too. I’m sure some might lynch me for this but I think GI Joe could benefit from making a game like Fortnite. Similar gameplay, be free with in game purchases, and use it as the drive for a toy line.

There actually is a version of the 60’s GI Joe in the 80’s toy line. Joe Colton! He was originally offered as a mail away figure, His original 90’s figure featured the iconic scar and green beret and If I remember right I’m pretty sure Joe Colton started the 80’s GI Joe team

My G.I. Joe did everything. 1967, '68? He went into space, in more than one sense of the word...he drove vehicles over cliffs to surprise the enemy...he got shot at...he faced the giant "dog monster" but unfortunately came out second best in that one. Explosives expert as well. Handkerchief parachute or bathtub submarine, underground or in the treetops, Joe defended The USA and my home. G.I. Joe!

I sadly have to agree with you. I think I was part of the last generation to actively strive for new action figures as a kid. Since I was born in '95, I had it pretty decent. Growing up into the early 2000's it was still doing okay. G.I. Joe was a bit more silly with the Spy Trooper and Valor vs Venom stuff, but I wasn't complaining, I had cool figures and cool tanks and jets to fly them around in. Jurassic Park was slowing down a bit since the third movie didn't have an AMAZING line of toys, but I still had my older ones and my cousins stuff to mess with too. Transformers were a bit more gimmick based, but they weren't flimsy like now, they were stiff pretty hefty toys!
Its sad to be a part of these fandoms now and see these lines almost deteriorating and rotting away rather than just being discontinued for a while to gather new ideas. The plastic qualities are lowering every year. Quality Control is failing more and more. Remolds and Repaints are commonplace. And worst of all, even some of the new stuff is just boring now! I wouldn't mind if G.I. Joe took a hiatus or focused on media for a while, but so far I still haven't seen any of the recent media that's been all that great to begin with!
The last Joe show I saw that I was remotely interested in was Sigma 6, and that was because it was a smaller team focused on combating a larger Cobra. Hell I even liked some of the toys. I wasn't the biggest fan of the more stylized, cartoon designs, but they still stayed relatively "believable" for a while before I think Hasbro decided to get rid of the Sigma 6 name and just use that design type for a bunch of new toys. But that was still almost a decade ago if I remember right. That's a big gap of nothing all that great to take on such an important title like G.I. Joe.

very informative, and insightful... I agree, that multimedia is key. aggressive marketing, a netflix series, a well produced videogame, like fallout, or cod, a good movie franchise, webisodes, or even a well written cartoon series that showcases new characters and vehicles that are being released...

Everything you stated in the video is so true. Its so unfortunate that kids nowadays are exposed to ipads and xbox, whereas it used to be outside fun and toys!

Not all kids are like that cause I’m 11 and I love the old toys even a lil bit of the old games like street fighter or double dragon. I also have the original voltron toy that my dad had as kid and I do kind of agree with you that kids these days are addicted to video games.

Interesting tax note on GI Joe--doll import tariffs were higher than toy soldier import tariffs. By importing GI Joe as a toy soldier--not a doll--Hasbro saved on taxes.

As bad as Sigma 6 is it's still not total garbage that G.I. Joe Extreme is. G.I. Joe Extreme has everything that is wrong with Rob Liefeld style characters and stories from 90's and it totally spits at legacy of vintage G.I. Joe that we know and love. That said I do like G.I. Joe Renegades as it showed how you can make G.I. Joe different while keeping familiar things about it.

I was born in the early 60s and collected the soldier series and adventure team aswell along with accessories and vehicles and still have most of my collection nowadays. The 1970s oil embargo caused Hasbro to have an excuse in not making the 12" versions anymore which was weird because Mattel Barbies were still being made and sold, cheap excuse I guess. Anyways, when they released those tiny butt scratching so called Joes I was deeply offended because of being spoiled with the 1/6 scale version. Oh well To each their own. Nice review there young man.

You provided a great review and history of the IP. I like your overall summary. I totally agree with you. My ten year old loves ARAH and the vintage 12" line. Unfortunately, the only action figures priced and marketed for kids are the 1:18 five POA figures NOT made by S7. Wave one of Voltron LD never saw a Wave 2. Matty Collector made lions the 3 3/4 figs could pilot decades ago; where were those pilotable lions for Netflix's Legendary Defender? The biggest action figure toy line, made for kids yet purchased by adults is the Fisher Price (Mattel) Imaginext. Just as Fisher Price took the idea of Adventure Team and kiddified (yes it's a word, I just invented it, see 'merica) it with Adventure People, Fisher Price with Imaginext took previous ideas and licensed IPs and made them a scale kids could play with again. Five POA, who cares, look at them. They are great. They also make adult nods to the past. A few that stand out, Clawtron, the zombie (complete with pillow case and eye hole, Jason, and hazmat suit guy, Breaking Bad likeness. And many others.
GI Joe toys were marketed to four and up, just like Imaginext is now. Kids want adventure, kids want imagination, kids want to be wowed! Kids want to make videos. Wow them with toys which can be used in an AR environment. Almost like green screen is used now. It would be an Application included with every figure. Not primarily military. Deep sea, jungle, desert, outer space, neighborhood. Encourage play through the kids making mini movies, commercials, about playing with their toys. Software would allow kids to select themselves and remove themselves. Playing becomes fun again as any adventure they think of can be hashed out digitally in post production. Make they sturdy, play outside sturdy. Boom, the next GI Joe. The very first toys could be from the ARAH era GI Joe, only a few, to transition from GI Joe, back to Adventure Team!

While GI Joe is AWOL, I'll go to Cotswold's Elite Brigade. Since the 1990's these people have been vending vintage GI Joes and even making reproduction parts.
There were a bunch of 1990's action figures by companies such as Dragon--starting with a WW2 German soldier. Many of the 1960's toys were reintroduced during the 1990's and the first decade of the 21st Century. New action figures are released every year. Of course, when a 1:6th scale remote control tank costs more than I paid for my SUV...
