    Excellent video my friend!!! You know there is such a rich history in GI Joe and it's tentacles reach deep into the action figure birth place for many lines. Stan Weston who gave birth to this idea, also forged the Captain Action concept to Ideal as well as The "Secret Origins of the Worlds Greatest Superheroes" to Marty Abrams at Mego. Need we say where it went from there? GI Joe was such a miracle of creations when you think about the culture of the day and the fact we were in the middle of a war with plenty of fried nerves from other wars. How refreshing that our world could make a distinction between a toy line and the politics of war for a while. Obviously by 1969, the violence and protests in our streets in America derailed any notion that kids could routinely play with the very subject that rankled so many in the counterculture. Don't they run our country today? Eh... maybe our parents were right! (: Anyway great video. Love them as always. Thanks for sharing and continuing knocking these out of the block!

    About 10 years ago I managed to collect all of these figures and finally completed all thier accessories. The hardest for me to complete was the Russian infantry man. I do not have the Canadian mounty. I have on last count, over 260 12 inch vintage figures. I started collecting as a young boy in 1967. They are constant reminders of my childhood, my brothers and family. The nostalgic value to me is great. All those wonderful Christmas mornings when my brother and I would rip into our presents and delighting in a new playset or figure. We spent hours upon days using our imaginations and unique skill in creating battle scenarios and death defying rescues. When the German/Japanese figures came out we finally had authentic villains and enemies. Of course my parents would never buy a Nazi soldier for me, so I would have to save my allowance money for weeks to come up with the $3.79 to order one from Sears, then achingly wait 2 weeks before we could pick it up. My brother and I had a German soldier each..Then during the Summer we would split our savings so we could buy a baseball one week and another figure a month later. But it worked out. We played with them outside/and in. Digging trenches and lifelike machine gun nests. Those were happy times that I will never forget. Great video, I really appreciate your channel!

      We had action man of course, but I still have a few after 45 years. A superb toy, I even get them out now to be honest. I served in the British Army for over 2 decades and I am sure action man was responsible for that lol. Impressive collection you have, chapeau as we say in France! Great comment by the way!

    I remember these well. My problem was not Vietnam or anything other than the fact that a German soldier was $5.00 back in 1966. That was way more than I could scrape together. However, I remember drooling over them.

    I was super obsessed with GI Joes when they released the replica versions of the Adventure Team back in 2008 when I was 10 years old. After a few months from when I got my first GI Joe replica at 10, I later found out that my local toy store sold an actual Vintage GI Joe British Commando. I literally fell in love with everything about it. It was not until I was 18 years old after I had just graduated from high school that I decided to finally buy the same GI Joe, which would become my first ever and only Vintage GI Joe action figure. I'm now 22 and I've owned it for four years so far and I still get excited over it whenever I come back home from university or work just seeing it in the transparent-covered box that came with it. One of my all-time favourite GI Joes.

    Those figures are works of art! Thank you for your efforts in sharing these toys with us. Growing up, I missed out on this line, and until I watched your documentary on Action Man/G.I. Joe, I didn't think very highly of them. Now, I see how great they truly were.

      Action Man & GI Joe are my all time favourite action figure lines! While I still appreciate many other toy lines like Star Wars, Mego, Six Million Dollar Man and Masters of the Universe, the quality of the early era Action man toys is unmatched...

    Playing with Joes growing up didn't realize later action man bits were from the UK arm of the figure. I always wondered were those alternative uniforms came from, only found out now, 50+ years later, as they were of high quality. Dunno if you have it among your videos, but weren't there other compatible figures with competing gear, but neither Joe or Action Man, I can't recall. Thanks for the memories. I do remember that as the Joe figures aged, the degree of detail in the gear became less marked, the original 1964 -66 stuff was the best.

    Great Video and particularly welcomed an explanation, of sorts, as to why we never saw the Japanese Soldier of the Century in the UK. I guess Palitoy felt it would not sell well given the experience of British POWs. Shame, because it would have made a nice addition to this line. As far as I know the Canadian Mountie uniform was never on sale in the UK but was given away as part of the Action Man Stars scheme. Do correct me if I am wrong in this.

    Love your videos, I was born in 1965, so the Solders of the World were something you might be lucky to get from a older brother as a hand me down or you might pick out of the garbage. I only had the Action Team and I remember all the do- gooders trying to ban war toys. It was even hard to get a toy gun for awhile. Eventually common sense prevailed and that non sense stopped.

    @ 56 y/o I can walk out of my house and in 7 (or so) min. I can reach the factory where they made The G.I. Joe! (today that old brick factory is Hasboro's art studio's. Complete with a life size Mr. Potatoe Head out front.) When I had 4 (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines!) in 1966/1967ish) I lived a 20 min car drive from my house to the Hasbro plant. I NEVER heard of GI Joe Action Soldier of the World. in 1969, (I remember this because my Dad died in 1970) I got a game for Christmas called (I think Hill 57???) inside was a pamphlets with the Soldiers of the World in it. I never saw them at any local stores, as I was on the hunt after seeing those pamphlets! Also I never saw an ad on TV. I do not know why! Hasbro right down the street. Me and my friends (around 6 or 7) had several G.I. Joes and only 1 had a Russian GI Joe. He got his on a family trip to VA.

    What I find funny about the German soldier is that what are supposed to be pouches for his ammo would be for the Kar 98-k, not the MP-40. In other words, his pouches can't hold the magazines.

    I was stationed at an RAF base in the late 80's. Some of my buddies and I would eat at the British canteen on base as the U.S. Air Force Exchange fast food was terrible. RAF police would come in with their Sten guns and just lay them on the tables while they ate. Upon examining one I realized that it was the 'same' gun Imperial Stormtroopers used in Star Wars. I hoped these Tommies could shoot a little better than Vader's troops if we needed defending.

    • @theant9821
      @theant9821 2 роки тому

      That would be the Stirling Submachine gun, not the sten (they do look similar at first glance).
      But the Stirling was a genuinely good, reliable Submachinegun whereas the sten was designed to be made rapidly, using as few a materials as possible so it was a flimsy piece of rubbish, with no real way of holding it well and prone to jamming and not unheard of to fire if it was dropped.
      The Stirling was in service from 1953-94 and was held in high regard as a quality weapon. And it had a grip to hold onto.
      The sten is often shown im movies being held by the magazine, which increased the likelihood of failure 10 fold due to the crappy magazine and rushed design of the receiver not holding the crappy magazine securely.

    I feel like the extreme culture here in the US steered GI Joe into eventual defeat, sadly. This is a good example of that

    • @theant9821
      @theant9821 2 роки тому +1

      The USA does seem to have a "we are awesome, the rest of the world sucks" attitude more than most countries.
      Its not as if we are the only country with freedom, or even the country thats had freedom the longest, we're just schooled into that train of thought from childhood, and many don't realise we're only one piece in the jigsaw puzzle.
      We aren't the golden goose we like to think we are.
      But our overconfidence when going to Vietnam was not in gi joe best interests.
      It was not the American equivalent of the Malaya Emergency the government had hoped it would be (the British won that one, thanks to having no border with China so insurgents were isolated from communist support).
      Britain didn't have the anti war stuff anywhere near as much, and the Falklands could only have boosted action man sales with a quick and decisive British victory, the British were crying out for war after Argentina took the Falklands, any compromise with Argentina was off the table.

    Being a collector myself, actually, the worst figure of the line in terms of accuracy is the German... Absolutely brutal then and even worse by the standard set today by Dragon models figures... to start with, a MP 40 with Karabiner ammo pouches ??? Otherwise, a very well documented and narrated presentation... sure brings back great childhood souvenirs!!!

    I don't understand why hasbro only re-released the Australian fighter. None of the rest were done, but Action Man did them all I think.

      Here in america, they suck! All the things they could've reissued when I was a boy, they didn't do like the 5 star Jeep the Frogman, sled etc. I don't even think they completed the whole 75 equipment set from the 40th Anniversary. But it's nice to see you have all the nice ones like the green berets. Your videos are so cool.

    Oh, the atrocities to which we subjected G.I. Joe. Shot with BB guns, blown up with firecrackers, stranded for days in the green hell of our vacant lot next door. Not to mention the degradations to which we subjected Barbie and Ken. The horror, the horror.

    The German soldier is bad... I mean...really, really bad... The absolute worst of the line... I mean... brutal! I'm a German uniform collector and have acquired since some of the Dragon Action figures ... what a contrast... Different times I guess...

      Setting aside your fascination with and demand for detail in Nazi stuff, are comparing the detail of premium, modern 1/6 scaled action figures (along the lines of Hot Toys/Sideshow) to toys developed with 1960s manufacturing limitations marketed to children? You do realize how asinine that is, don't you?

    Does anyone know why Hasbro didn't include a Chinese NRA soldier in the line? seems like the only major allied Nations not to be represented.

    We really do need more Nazi GI Joes nowadays. Back when GI Joe action figures were educational and toy makers had balls.
