- I thought Ruby would sail through her MOT but she didn't !
It took a day to sort out but I thought I should let you know the problem just in case you didn't know.

Haha!! I had the same thing with the S3 last month, when I took the front O/S wheel to A1 Alloys for machining damage (done by the Mrs - Honest Guv) The dash read one wheel was low. I got myself in a panic that A1 refurb guy didn't put back the pressure sensor. Frantically searching on the Audi forum I found it is measured from the ABS - phew! Then I had to find how to reset the damned thing on the MMi screen I am really not very technical. Glad my other driving toy is simple, just fuel injection, and that's about it
Nope. I hold that award. Changed my Rover 800 for a S Type in 2003. I checked the S type would fit in garage _ a no brainer as S type shorter and narrower. Drove car home. Put in garage and opened door. Jag doors wider and longer. Jag bonnet longer. So door opened onto the one and only column in garage. I could judt get out as my backside just fitted over curved part of jag side......but my wife is 8'' shorter so could only get out via back door. Even with bumper touching wall. Ended up extending garage 8 feet at cost of 10k!
@@jameshiggins8329 haha And the 2019 Muppet award goes to.........
LOL...BRILLIANT !!😂😂😂
Think the only one calling you a muppet is the petrol pup....in their own particular way
Mate, respect is due for fessing up and sharing so others can learn from your experience...
My pleasure. I knew I would be in for some stick but all worth it if I just help one person 👍
Ouch! But lesson learned, I guess.
Some good heckling there from the Petrol Pup 😂
Oh yes, she is good at that 😂
This is the reason why i hate Modern cars, i'd sooner have a classic, no computers, no stupid sensers in the wheels etc etc etc.
Me too, less is best.
More gadgets, more problems.
@@dizzy2020 - £2k? That’s insane.
I found 2 brand new Hella headlights for my car at a market for 1% of that.
Totally agree!
Nothing taking over the driving when a sensor gives a duff reading. My daily has a city braking feature, it slams on up to speeds of 30MPH if it thinks you're going to crash. I've had it activate 4 times now, all 4 needlessly, one almost causing a crash, and another causing a road rage incident. I don't want to buy any cars newer than mine going forward as I don't trust all this pointless technology. My next car will need to have the following: mechanical handbrake, manual gearbox, no collision avoidance crap, no lane departure crap, no TPMS crap, no touchscreen crap, nothing that needs "calibrated" after a simple procedure like changing brake pads or a new windscreen. Give me something simple, it'll be more reliable.
@@dizzy2020 LED headlights by chance? My current car has LED headlights, and they are good don't get me wrong. But each lamp is entirely sealed, with its own ECU built in. If an LED fails, it's probably going to be a similar story - complete replacement headlamp needing to be coded to the car.
Great video Pete, you live and learn,at least you got it sorted.👌😀
Indeed, and now more annoying light on the dash 😂
Love the dog! Thanks for the tip with this... Very good info to know!
Great info and i'm sure this will help others. Every days a school day eh!!! Glad Ruby passed in the end.
That is why I put the video out there and braced myself for the insults 😜😂😂
Glad you got sorted and good information! Thanks
My pleasure. All sorted now so no big deal 👍
Hey Pete, I hope everything is running OK. It was a pleasure to spend the time with you on the day. Glad we managed to get it all resolved.
Hopefully see you soon.
Regards, Damion
Hi Mate. Thanks for sorting everything and hope you like the video and the shout out 😜
bet it was at £70 odd a pop 😁
Ped. Respect for making this video, firstly for admitting you messed up a lot wouldnt and secondly for bringing this to viewers attention, I drive a Jaguar XF and have been looking at possible aftermarket wheels, this has been of a great help as it has tyre pressure monitoring and could of been very costly to me. So a big thank you.
Thanks for the video Pete! Currently looking at upgrading my alloys and hadn't thought about my tpms will definitely be doing a bit more research!
That's great. The reason I made this video 👍
I am pleased you got your car sorted out. very informative thanks for sharing
My pleasure. Hope it helps someone 👍
Brilliantly informative 👍🏼
Ped, you're just MEGA ❤❤❤
Why thank you 🙏
Hey Pete, as always, thanks for revealing that tidbit of info. I've had a similar experience on my TL. Just wanted to say that I love your candor but also that you look tired! Please follow your own advice to take good care and get some rest! Everyone needs a break once in a while.
Thanks for you concern. It had been a long day 😜😂
Good shout out to Micheldever. I was there having tyres fitted to a restored Ginetta G15 and they were excellent, but that was 30 years ago! Glad to see they’re still going and still doing a great job.
They have been going for well over 50 years. My company used to buy tyres from them. They are a large business as they also supply farmers with their tractor tyres.
Whew! Glad you got it figured out!
Me too 😂
I would never have thought about the sensors myself and bet I’m not alone. Fortunately I’m not in any hurry to replace my wheels or tyres ;-) Great clip and honesty is the only policy so good on you for sharing.
I don't think we are alone 😂
Glad you got Ruby sorted, great and informative video. My MINI (Lucky) is as I type at Lohen thanks to you fella for a stage two tune!
Is she a black R56 ? Have a PP2 and rear diffuser ?
If so I saw her on Insta today 👏
Petrol Ped , I saw that too but no. White with a black roof, picking up later today as Lohen have been doing other remedial work. Very excited. Watch out for pictures 😊👍🏻
Waiting for the full modification list video mate! Very good content and sick mini!!
You don't have to wait long then as I drops on Friday. Full break down of what I've had done and how much it all cost !
You can also get rebuild kits (new little o-ring gaskets etc..) for the tpms sensors. To avoid having to replace them in case of a leak when the batteries and sensors still worked fine. I've had this on a couple cars due to owners getting new tires. As they hadn't received new valve stems over the years as you normally would before tpms.
Very useful information here mate , Thumbs up for you Pete and Petrol Pup !!
Cheers Lee 👍
Good you have gotten that sorted out. Now get on to thrashing the road!!!!
Oh yes...I'll certainly be doing that 👍
I have always used MT for my daily driver tyres and alignment, you are right they are the best place in the south, the prices are amazing and waiting times are pretty good! I have been using them for the last 15 years.
Me too. 15 years and counting. I still drive from Chichester to get my tyres done there !
I didn't know that had never thought about it ,Thanks for the head up information .
My pleasure 👍
Ouch! Really interesting, been following your mods with interest, I didn’t realise any warning light was a fail, though obvious I guess. Glad all sorted.
Now I think about it its obvious but before the MOT I didn't give it a seconds thought. You will like Fridays video as I break down the exact cost of all the work I have had done 👍
When I first saw the title of this vid, I was convinced you were going to say failed MOT due to emissions (your new 100 cell sports cat :D) Glad to hear you've got it sorted; I've got an R56MCS and will certainly think twice before replacing the wheels.
No probs with killing polar bears 😜😂👍
Bloody hell I never knew that I won’t lie damn! No TPS means failure wow! Glad you’ve sorted though and great to share.
News to me too 😮
Petrol Ped couldn’t believe it
Lovely little hound!!
Greetings from Almaty, Kazakhstan. Well you learn something every day. A salutary lesson when veering away from the factory spec! I note that Micheldever Tyres are part of the Protyre group. I can vouch for their Exeter branch who have fitted many tyres to my vehicles - motorcycles and cars. A true quality and highly professional service.
They certainly know their stuff. I think you are my view comment from Kazakhstan 👏
Petrol pup in the background!!😂 Brilliant!👍😂
She just can't help trying to get into videos 😂
Glad you got it sorted out. What with things like this and can bus electrics moding a car isn't what it used to be. However plug in chip tuning is pretty awesome so swings and roundabouts.
Thanks so much for the top information. Just bought myself a roadster and needed this info. 👍🏻 keep up the good work and interesting content
No worries 😉
Ah...that would be why I spotted you leaving said MOT garage last Friday at 5pm. Glad you got it sorted.
Yep...got there at 0830 😂😂😂
The more electronics on cars the more they fail MOTs
You could have just coded the car to switch off the system and then it wouldn't throw a warning, its only a failure if its active and doesn't work
Ha ha, sounds like Petrol pup is pumping your tyres up !!
Big lesson though, I didn’t know that would be an MOT failure. Every day is a learning day for us all.
It sure is 👏
Wow that’s something I didn’t know I’ll pass it on to my son as he has different wheels and tyres for the summer and winter! Now that could be expensive! Thanks a very useful video.
Cheers 👍
Thumbs up for an hilarious video!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
My TPM works via the My Two Eyes system, which is also quite expensive if it goes wrong.
Those systems work really well 👍😜
Well I never knew that Peter glad you got it sorted even if you are a few quid poorer 👍
Just one of those things 👍
Glad everything worked out for you!
It did...all sorted now 👍
Just did a quick mooch around t'internet found Tyresonthedrive Pilot Sport 4 for my car are £123.99 Compared to Protyre £126.12 & I don't even have to drive there! They come to me, I am stoked, cheers Ped!
Great heads up with that one Pp, thumbs up mate.
Cheers Andy 👍
Glad you got it sorted and pup was happy.
The Pup was happy as she got into the video 😂
Nice one for the warning ⚠️. I was going to put some aftermarket wheels on my Mini but now I’ll do more research. Thanks fella, sorry for the extra expense 💋
I'm just pleased to give people the heads up 👍
our Mini is also Ruby - really love the new tires!
Great name 👍
@@PetrolPed thanks and yeah it is a great name :) ours is just the F56 with 102 HP; no mods, but next year she will get some :-D
Can thoroughly recommend Micheldever Tyre Services. I started using them some 25 years ago when I was a service manager in a franchised dealer in Hertfordshire. My personal car had high performance metric tyres fitted that were very expensive. They managed to supply and fit the tyres for £100 less than my whole saler could supply them directly to me. I moved to France 8 years ago but still use them if a visit to the UK coincides with a tyre change. I didn't realise if the tyre pressure sensor system wasn't working it was an MOT failure.
I bought some TMPS sensors from ebay for £70 when I put Oz wheels on my Abarth 124. Plug and play from Germany worked a treat. I notice they have crept up to £90 now. That was £70 for four not each lol. I kept the original wheels for a winter setup.
Really sorry to hear this Ped. Sounds like you can sort it though best of luck and drive safe
All sorted now 👍
@@PetrolPed Excellent!
Massive respect at you bud for this video I did not know about this either nice one 👍👍👍👍
Cheers Harry 👍
Vey good to see you putting this info out here Peter,
Cheers Roger 👍
Glad to watch that you’ve sorted out the issue and thank you for bringing this to our attention. Must admit it is not something I have ever thought about with regards to the MOT. Got me thinking now as I’ve changed all the bulbs in my car for new LED ones much brighter etc and it’s got me thinking as this is also a modification I might fail the MOT. Hope not.
It would only be a fail if they didn't work 😜
Micheldever tyres are brilliant, I’ve been using them for the last 25+ years and have never had a problem apart from the odd cue. I always get my tracking checked there as they’re the best and check castor and camber as well as the tracking.
Great video and well worth pointing out the issue... It’s also worth noting that you should advise your insurance company of any modifications otherwise it can invalidate your insurance! ..... and we all know how insurers love a reason to wriggle out of paying up!!
Indeed 👍
Loved the video Pete. The dog is epic!
Thank you 🙏
Well who knew that could be an issue? Glad you've got it sorted.
Anyone with a brain.
@@Jabber-ig3iw everyone loves a smart arse.
Amazing .!!! But its okay to drive a wreck that takes an age to stop, wheels hanging off, but faulty pressure gauge.!!! Really.!! Great vid guys xx
Interesting video! I didn't realise the TP sensors are in the valves! 😎👍 No wonder your old wheels sold so quick I bet the buyer was rubbing his hands together when he realised the sensors @ £75 each were also included 😯😁😊😎👍
Have used Micheldever for many years but last visit was a massive cock-up but their manager pulled it out the bag with 24 hours to go before a trip to France. Home visit with all tyres, fitted and balanced so back in the game. Prices are good too.
Thank you I have just changed my wheels on my VW Rocco MOT due June 30th. Tyre pressure light was on on the way home. Getting 45 Pirellis with all weather and wheel rim guards put on tomorrow at Kwik Fit instead of budget / unknown make- 40s, currently on these replacement wheels. I couldn't go to 50's on my 18" wheels as it looked silly and may affect the turning on the inner wing. I will ask them to ensure tyre pressure sensors are on the new tyres and are talking to the car's computer.
I didn't want to mess with things but this was due to hitting and denting my 19" wheels and skinny tyres to get out of the way for a racing ambulance - bounced up a kerb to let it through arggh!
Its also a good idea to record all the codes of the tire pressure sensors to each wheel. You can then program a new one if one is damaged or becomes faulty.
Thank you it's something l did not know very helpful 👍
👍
Cheers Pete, Just bought new rims for my R50 mini I'm pretty sure the tyre monitor is based on tyre circumstance on the r50 but thanks for the heads up I'll certainly check that is the case and not an in valve sensor now.
The R50/53 doesn’t have valve sensors 👍
At least I made you question it 👍
Spell check kicked in grrr, obviously I meant circumference. But thanks to the guy that confirmed there are no sensors on the valves. May the modifications continue.
Thank you so much for this! We have a 2011 Mini Cooper D (Nothing in comparison) - I didn't realise the tyre sensors are within the wheels.I think the alloys on the mini have gone porous - we have new tyres, but need to re-inflate every 2-3 days - which isn't great! Ruby is such a cool car, I have been watching your posts, and have enjoyed every minute!
Last night, I watched your first Q&A video (how great that was!!) ... I appreciate your honesty, and obvious enthusiasm for the cars! (others don't) ... I think it's great that in 2016 you were saying that 1000 subscribers would be cool! .... LOL! 51.5k followers - You, my friend, are doing something very right! Keep it up! ... now where is the emoji for thumbsup???? :D
Wow thanks Dermot. This has made my evening 👍
That’s a bummer Peter, still Ruby is sorted. We can all learn from your misfortune.
Pooch is looking grand, just had ours done ( every four weeks) but definitely worth it.
Catch you later
Geof
Love them when they've just been clipped 😍
Yes mate. The tyre pressure monitoring system has to be working as of 2012. Before that is does not come into the MOT .
I amglad we don't have MOTs here in Australia.
I’m glad I never specced it on my rs3. Pointless waste of money. Nice to have but another thing that goes wrong, as the sensors only last 2 or 3 years.
Thanks for the heads up.
Any illuminated warning light is an MOT failure. I had a TT for years where an emissions lamp would illuminate for a few weeks then go out for a few months. Audi dealer could find no fault so I wasn’t bothered until the recent changes, took it in for MOT nervously with the same lamp lit only to later find out it had passed! The tester said the lamp was on when they drove it into the bay but when the test started the lamp went out! Pass!
My 435i failed on tyres this week, 4 X 19” Pilot Sport 4S 💸
Bad luck Peter and yet it is another useful lesson learned. It is something to think about if you get a set of wheels with winter tyres and swap them over for a few months...the sensor problems could arise unless you get matching electronically set up wheels. Something for all of us to file as useful information in the back of the mind. Anyway...all clear now and a year of enjoyment ahead!!!😎😎😎😎😎😎
Exactly. All sorted and a great excuse to make a video 😂
Peter, I class myself as having a decent amount of mechanical knowledge, but I ordered a new set of alloys for my C Class recently, then read about tyre pressure sensors! Thought I'd dropped that clanger but luckily the sensors are part of the abs system on my car so they just needed a quick reset after a couple miles. Apparently metal tyre valves are usually wheel sensors. Great advice though. Cheers, Jon.
Yep. I’d hoped mine were like that but they weren’t 😢
Congratulations on 41,000 subs!
Many thanks Bud 🙏
Hello Pete, Thank you for sharing this issue and experience. It's not something you think would cause an issue. I too had a similar issue like this a year ago when my sensor came on and it was caused by a faulty sensor, Ford tried to tell me I had aftermarket tyres on the car and this was the cause. (they came with the car from new) so I was lucky never had to pay anything. I think you can buy the sensors cheaper than £75 if you program them yourself. To be honest, I was half expecting you to say the car failed on emissions.
My pleasure mate 👍
Here in Nordic countries, avoid TPS. The problem is salt and then rust in the system. It's a expensive failure.
Great information I would fit into the Muppet camp mate as well 👍👍
Welcome to the club 😂
Very interesting and a cautionary tale for all. Personally, I rely on the MK10 right foot for tyre pressure sensing on my VW T4. Very few electronic gizmos to worry about.
😂😂😂
Good advice and info.
Usually the sensors in the wheel send a value in Bar/PSI to the computer. I recall the TPS on my R53 was something to do with the ECU monitoring wheel speed, the intention being that a flat tyre turned differently to a fully inflated one. I wondered if thats the same on the later models as your reset method was exactly what i had to do in my R53. Reset and drive to get a baseline. I swapped my wheels out too, genuine Mini but they had no sensors in them and the TPS reset just fine.
Fortunately when I changed the wheels and tyres on my F57, the company that did the work (Elite Tyres and Wheels Rainham Essex) automatically removed the valves with the pressure sensors and put them in the new wheels so I didn’t have that issue... when I got into the car it told me I needed to reset tyre pressure and it took about 15 mins for them to reset as I drove home!
Squeaky toy 🤣🤣
Very informative video. Would have never realised it was an MOT failure? I just assumed the TPM was a nice to have.
Me too 😂
Great tip, Thanx 👍
Sorry to hear your bad news! Something thats easily overlooked... Lesson learned maybe?
Pleased you were able to get it sorted!
Love Petrol Pup and Pooch getting in on the vlog! 🤣
Have to say that you are looking a bit tired, mate....
Holiday and extensive relaxation required, methinks!
Cheers from the Wirral!
Thanks Darren. I've just come off a 2 week holiday and back to work now. I filmed this at the end of a long day 😜😂
not all tyre pressure monitoring works from the wheel, some work from the hub and monitor the travelling radius over 2 points, if the pressure reduces so does the time it takes to travel a revolution which triggers the system - so in a nut shell not all people with a monitoring system have this same issue on swapping wheels.
Yeh pretty sure Audi’s work via the hub. Booody awful design from bmw.
Yep, you are indeed correct 👍
Most work on sensors in the wheels usually but some cars monitor the tires with the ABS (Mokka’s up a 16 plate has the abs tpms ) - if you have sensors in the wheels, don’t use the gunk in a can (fix a flat) as A. It fouls up the sensor B. It makes a mess for the fitter C. Tire + sensor + clean up fee = a lot of money 💰
@@hikewild5694 except in Canada. I have an 03 R53, a 2013 R56, and a wife has a F60 countryman and none have TPMS they all rely on the abs sensor for varying speed to detect low tires. None of my winter tires have monitors in them.
Me encanto tu R59, las modificaciones están increíbles y de muy buen gusto, no le entendí a algunas pero me gustaría ponerlas también a mi R58, saludos !
Still worth it looks great.
Basically, if it's fitted, it has to work.
By the way, years ago I took a car in for MOT... it failed because there was a chip in the windscreen. The guy told me as it was just inside the arc of the windscreen wipers it was classed as "inline of sight", hence the fail. I purchased a slightly shorter wiper, fitted it, took it back and it passed the MOT. 😂
Did that wit my Mk2 MX5, result!
@Driftwannabe 10 Nice one mate!
@@shadgrind Perfect... the laws are ridiculous. 👍
You might not fail a current MOT for that as the wiper sweep is no longer a consideration, it's all at the discretion of the tester now and whether he or she feels it's in the driver's view.
@@Teribus13
This is true.
Had an old e46 BM in for MOT has crack along the centre top about 12inches long. Thou not in drivers sight.
Thought it would fail.
Passed! MOT testers discretion.
My friend had exactly the same thing happen with his Range Rover Peter. What a pain in the backside !! But at least it's now sorted.
It is indeed 👍
I remember, in the early 80's, dashboard gauges being reduced and more warning light's appearing on the dashboard. Journalist's at the time labelled them " Idiot Light's." There are so many idiot light's on dashboards nowadays that it is ridiculous. In a 2019 car you can have a perfect pressure in each tyre , but if a light on the dashboard does not come on, your car is deemed unroadworthy. That is insane.
Yep...mad 😪
Just find a guy with a laptop and have them deleted.
@@MrJimbaloid thing is, if it was fitted as new, it has to be there and working. If it's missing, that's also an MOT fail.
cute dog in video i think you saved it lol. Stay healthy stay happy.
Mup pup pet ped glad it was all resolved for you 👍
Great video, don't feel bad about it. TPMS legislation was introduced for all new vehicles from nov 2014 and you wont be the only one caught out. You mentioned that if you do put aftermarket wheels on to remember to take out the sensors and put them into your new set. Top tip ... get your tyre service provider to make a note of the wheel locations that the original equipment sensors came out of and make sure they are put in the corresponding wheel locations for the new wheel set. For clarity if you took a sensor out of your front left wheel - make sure it is put back into the new front left wheel. This can avoid a diagnostic reset (on certain makes and models of vehicle) as effectively the car is looking for unique sensors specific to that wheel position. If anyone gets stuck, feel free to give us a shout (I-sensor is actually our product) as we provide TPMS support across the UK to professional tyre installers
..... Just like Damion, Chris and the indeed knowledgeable team at Protyre Micheldever station.
Thanks for this. Very interesting and helpful 👍
So what about rotating wheels/tyres to even out wear?
I have a transporter which apparently works out from geometry of the wheel ,does false alarm a bit not luckily in the valves
Bloody hell, I've never heard of this before, it's great that you've let others know the score. I thought that the MOT only picked up on Airbag warning lights and that was about it. I suppose the tyre pressure warning system is a (very handy) safety feature, but never knew that would be picked up on. This will be news and a big warning to lots of modifiers!!!
That's why I made the video 👍
Well worth knowing, thanks young lad.
My pleasure 👍
When I had a rally Opel Michelldever tyres always looked after me. Fabtastic they were brilliant. They do my mini next!
They are brilliant 👍
Also reverse lights are included fairly new addition, best to check dvla for listing as it possible that the test is updated good video, be a problem if they decided to use the commercial truck mot test (that's tuff)
Wow, I didnt realise ! these modern times. None of my cars have such a thing, being pre 2007, apart from the Caterham which has nothing, but seems capable of passing MOT. Understand your frustration. Maybe the people who did the wheel
/tyre mods should have mentioned this when they fitted them. Can`t believe it hasn`t happened to other folks. Yes, thumbs up to Micheldever Tyres. I live near them!!!
Just one of those things...easy to overlook 😪
Surprises me a Caterham gets through the test 😂😂😂
Nice vlog, enjoyed the reality! New cars r a pain in the arse, compared to older cars, this sort of thing is time consuming and annoying. MOT failure is a joke 🙄
I couldn't agree more 😜😂
This week, I almost had the same thing happen to me with my new wheels for my mini. Luckily I went in to a local tire shop and wanted a quote on tires for the new new alloy wheels and they said you will need to take the tire valves off the old wheels and put them on the new wheels before selling the others... Love my Clubman... Not yet in the league of your mods....
Ped you're getting younger everyday. Nice new hairstyle!
Why thank you Sir 😜
I must admit, until watching this I’d no idea how tyre pressure sensors worked. It would never have occurred to me to take out the sensors from the old tyres either. That’s probably a lesson learned for many of us.
I didn't really know either. Hopefully I have helped a little education 👍
Good post.
Hopefully will help people.
Luv and Peace.
Cheers Ian 👍
Many thanks as would not have thought sensor in valve. I bought a set of steel wheels with winter tyres for our 2017 polo from VW. They were too busy to fit to the car so took wheels home and swapped over. Got low pressure alarm. Looked up fix on internet and followed instructions for reset. No problems. Used user manual when summer tyres went back on 6m later. No problems. As I paid about around 500 or so for all 4 wheels and tyres I recon that the sensor method aint 4 x 75gbp valve. Worth knowing and checking if non dealer used for a new tyre however after bad experience of major tyre replacement company on my old jag some 15 yrs ago I tend to let JLR or VW replace my tyres. Cheers Jimmy 👍
