Wow, I just learned this lesson tonight... I have struggled with shanking for years. Whenever they come on, I use impact tape and monitor things closely. I have read every shanking tip under the sun. For me, most fail to solve the root problem. For whatever reason, while hitting balls earlier tonight, I focused on keeping my elbows pinched together and facing my hips and what do you know... Impact dead center of the club face time and time again. This came after hitting hosel rockets 50% of the time. This setup tip is exactly what Hogans 5 Lessons talks about. However, I have never seen this communicated as a tip for curing the shank. I don't post much but felt compelled to relay this. We will see if this lasts the test of time but I am very optimistic.
I'd been lost at sea having gone from a 1 tcp to parts unknown, full swing yips, errant ball flights when I didn't flinch, crazy unnatural feeling in my hands/grip like my thumb was keeping the club closed on the takeaway. All that ended when I used a grip that made my hands feel as one + what you're drilling here, the elbows not pointing outward toward the target or behind you for the trailing elbow. The loose elbows didn't cause me to chicken wing it, but instead I think flinch at impact because of the overarching need to square the club face caused by the improper elbow position. Anyway, now accurate again. I didn't seek this advice first but happened upon your site after I'd made the change. To all readers, it's sage advice easily overlooked. The import of not positioning the elbows properly cannot be overstated.
Hi Ross found this more than useful today, began for the first time hit solid and straight shots, thank you very much, one drawback though,I must remember not to say outloud,Pinch Pinch, when playing in the mixed fouballs, keep up the good work,I will give you an update when I break 80 all the best Monty
I also was struggling with shanks with pitches and long chips but yesterday it happened near the end of the round twice with full shots. Hit a bucket of balls after round and shanked about half of them. Went home thinking I may never play decent golf again. Somehow I thought about an old training aid I had called an arm master that keeps elbows together. I found it and using impact tape hit some pitches and long chips and impact was in the center of the club every time. That night I found this video and next day hit a bucket as good or better than ever with no shanks. Wish I had found this 2 years ago. It is worth the money to join your site just for this tip. This was my first post ever. Hope I did t right. Thanks
