- This little care has been so good to my family! It's about to cross the 300000 mile mark. As a thank you gift to the car I am investing back into it. This project cost about $600 total for all the parts and fluids used. If we were to buy another car that is the equivalent of 2-3 car payments, not to mention the dozens of next car payments needed until it was paid off! NOPE!!! Fix it up, use it up and wear it out!
Here's to another 150000 miles!!!! 2004 Toyota Corolla S will run forever if well taken care of! No excuses now, this little commuter car will get me here, there, everywhere!

You should have mentioned this is a 5 speed.
On an automatic, the lower control arm requires raising the whole engine to get one bolt out!
It’s a LOT more work and very hard to do on the ground.
Most of these corollas were sold as A/Ts
Doing the same to a 2005 Corolla S with 270k. Origional owner. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the view and comment. Enjoy the new car feel when you’re done. It made a huge difference! 👍🏼
Cool. I have a 2006 matrix 4WD with 184k miles. I frigging love this car, aftermarket parts abound and she is real easy to work on. I just replaced intake gaskets (no codes but rough idle and running lean with ltft 6). It went from 22-23 mpg to 27-28 mpg. Not too shabby.
That’s awesome! They are super easy to work on and we’ll cared for they will run forever (no exaggeration - hahaha)
Love this . Got a 2007 s gonna soon replace mines ..over 200000 miles
These cars will go forever if we’ll cared for!
Nice video and some natural comedy. Keep that Corolla humming!! SL City is a beautiful city.
Thanks man! And yes UT is a beautiful state.
Muy buen trabajo yo tambien lo hice el año pasado con 285 000 millas. Tambien cambie los 4 soportes del motor.
gracias. Revisé nuestros soportes de motor y todos estaban bien. no necesitaba cambiarlos. (Google translate was my friend 😜)
@@troysgarage Ok thanks for your answer. Greetings Health and Good Luck👍
This is probably the closest thing I'll get to a Celica GTS front suspension rebuild guide. The Corolla and Celica of these generations have identical suspension components. Thanks for the video
I didn’t know that. Now I guess I’ll drive mine with a little higher RPM and maintain my momentum through the apex of the turn. I always felt like my car wanted to be turned loose! 🕺🏼 All joking aside, thanks for the feedback and the kind words. Glad this helped! 👍🏼
I have a 2004 Corolla and I wish I had your knowledge of cars. I do want to replace my rear struts myself, soon.
Suspension parts are a great place to start learning. Brakes, oil changes and then do a ton of research for check engine codes etc. learn a little at a time! You’ll get there! 👍🏼
I like how its pulled up on the sidewalk but the suspension is so worn out the car is still level. Also the deadcat helps alot based on the lack of windnoise.
Yeah it’s very tired suspension!!! Much better now that it’s done! No clunking or nasty sounds anymore! Good to go! 🙌🏼
For a '99, that Dodge looks pretty good.
Better than used.
Not quite new.
You should put that on a t-shirt. 👍
It is on a tshirt. Check this out - teespring.com/not-quite-new Support the channel and the build. (SHIP4FREE - code for free shipping). Thanks for the kind words too. I try hard to take care of my stuff. There’s some rust coming through that I need to deal with this spring. More videos to come. 🕺🏼👍🏼
Great video...any video for how to...catalytic converter replacement..(weld with flange..)Thank you have a blessed day and be blessed
I do have a 20 Ton press if you're ever in the need, also have a big nasty if you're familiar with the colloquial term for the Astro air hammer. And I really love my Harbor Freight bar light.
That’s good to know! I’m hoping to never have the need but you just never know. Thanks JD!
Great video good work
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi..
Have 2001 corolla s with 285k..engine smoked like chimney.Replaced with 90k engine and auto trans..cat back w new o2 sensors..radiator..
Next is complete front suspension.
How did the Detroit Axle parts work?
Used there stuff for 89 caravan..parts were junk..JUNK.
Will try them again i guess..
Thanks..nice job with video.
Parts fit as good as factory and we’re still solid when we sold the car 2 years later. Daily driver during that time.
@@troysgarage thanks guy..nice video..
How has the detroit axle kit held up since you put them in? I've heard they are of poor quality. I'm debating if Moog is worth the extra money. Thanks
We sold the car about 18 months after putting this in. Didn't have any issues post install. I have no doubt that it's still good to this day actually. Is Moog "better" probably, is it "worth it"? Who knows! All I know is the car drove soooo much better than before this swap. I dare say before this "upgrade" cuz it was that drastic of a change. No more clunking, squeaking or banging from simple bumps or quick turns. I'd do this same swap again if/when it's needed. Some might argue that Moog would have been an even more drastic change. Who knows! I did use Moog products on my 99RAM when I did a suspension update on it. But it's 4x4 and I haul loads and trailers. Take this all for a what it's worth.
Niiiice video brother!
Thanks man! 🙌🏼
Did you have to lift up the transmission to remove the lower control arm for the driver side? I saw this somewhere on another guy’s video.
No but I’ve heard that some are super hard to remove. Mine took a good yank and pry and it came right out.
@@troysgarage great, thanks for your quick response. I am looking to change my suspension on my 04 Corolla this spring. Too much clicks and clacks when I hit bumps
I was thinking of doing this, I mean it's only bolts and stuff right? Only seeing you struggle in a posh garage means my task of doing the same at the side of the road is nearly impossible. Think I'll get my local garage to fit the parts..
I don’t know about the posh thing but if your handy it’s not too bad! But having it done makes the car drive like a dream.
storage unit that will allow a car parked in there and fit the car comfortably?
Awesome video! Doing the same thing on my matrix to
How many miles on the Matrix? Toyota odometers for this engine cap at 300k. Just a heads up. Toyota will fix it for around $500 at a dealership, I just use one on my trip meters to gauge how many miles over 300k I’m at. The other trip meter for oil change reminders.
DIY Home and Auto mine is actually maxed out was at 300 k when I bought it I put atleast 20000 on it so I’m actually un sure
I AM JUST NOW LOOKING INTO CARS. I OWN A 04 4DOOR (sorry caps) Toyota Corolla and the ODO reads 299,999, its been sitting there for about seven years. It is my commuter and i have had it about 1 yer now bought it from my uncle who works with me and we live 120 mi. from work. its been that way for almost 4 years lol. point, Great cars.uncle got it from Grandfather who bought it brand new. goal now, mod and add power!
Ours just hit the same thing about 100 miles ago. After some research this is a thing. I’ve been told that a dealer can reset it but at a cost of around $500. For that kind of money I intend to just use my trip meters to keep track of actual mileage over 299,999 for Trip A and use Trip B for oil changes and service. It’s not perfect but to save some cash, I’m all about it! These are great little cars! What mods are you considering?
@@troysgarage yessir, i use the trip for oil now lol. She's pushin 600k im bettin if not passed. Suspension to start then im thinking exhaust. I pretty much want to rebuild as much as i can apart from the engine. Cause i dont see replacing it until i need. I personally dont know too much around the performance side of cars, but i am becoming a victim to the adrenaline and am really enjoing seeing these cars around which leads me to how tos on UA-cam. also i really would like to put a sticker somewhere , maybe on my back winshield, "Better than used, not quite new."
My got stuck at 299,999
Hi there, this is a great tutorial how to go about the front suspension overhaul, learning a lot and subscribed. I have a 2004 Corolla doing the engine, almost ready to go back in and was thinking of suspension refresh however I do not have the issues you had, so far I have new axles, ball join and control arms everything else is stock but I saved the links of amazon parts you show here, very helpful. For the engine drop in, would you recommend doing it with the car front wheel on? the wheels are disconnected from the control arm as to when I took of the axles, or should i take them out and put it in jacks? I ask because with the wheel supporting the car it is comfortable for me to work on as I am short but my intuition tells me it is best to have it on jacks which raises the engine bay few inches. Thanks for the video!
You can leave the wheels on if they are disconnected. Either way think safety first. 🙌🏼
@@troysgarage Great, sure do, thanks! right in the middle of watching your video👌
@@troysgarage Car is back on the road now with the rebuilt engine. Now the suspension is awful and needs to be replaced all 4 shocks and struts, I have to decide which set to get; all sets seems to have complaints on them so to pick the right one it is difficult; I also have some shaking on the brake pedal after applying brakes and some wobbling at very low speeds like 2-5 miles/hour, not sure if it is just bad rotors or may be the rear drums which are the stock ones; in any case was thinking in doing suspension + brakes @ another $700~ in parts give it or take; this could be knock out in couple days then an alignment; the tires have good threads but are kind of cracking on the sides by sitting there not being used; I was told that may be the case with rotors may be warped by not being used for long time but the rotors were inside the house since I took them apart; the front brake pads are almost new. These new little issues comes to light with the car running of course; my RH axle which both are "direct replacement" did not seems to go all the way into the transmission bell; its dust seal is about 1/4 inch far out from the transmission bell and the spline was showing a good inch from the hub, while the driver side when in all the way and spline shows half inch off the hub but after driving over 100 miles now there are no leaks from the transmission; i am not sure if that is the way they go and it is all ok or if there is a problem and that may be why I am feeling the shake when braking or the mystery little wobbling when starting to drive; the thing is this car love to keep me busy and I wont stop until I am happy how it drives. I could ignore these little things now that is drivable but after so much time, effort and $$ on it it is just not cool to do so. The engine purr like a kitty , I only had some noise from steering pump at start that I thought it was a timing chain noise until I realized rather fast that the steering fluid was way too low. After all done or in between I have to also re-charge the AC system but used the heater on the trip to reset the OBD and it was working like a champ. I feel bad not to have documented all the ordeal of the past almost 4 years in video but i have a zillion of pictures but for the final results got a video coming soon.
@Rody Hi there, could you please guide how to minimize cabin noise specially Dashboard noises please.
have you ever changed the wheel bearings? mine 06 has 170k and makes a hum noise at highway speed. trying to figure it out.
Ended up buying a new hub assembly so I didn't have to worry about pulling the bearing and pressing in a new one. It was only about $25 more for the whole hub. Made it super easy!
@@troysgarage does toyota make that part or was it another company?
I take it back, It was quite a bit more expensive than just the bearing. I'm remembering this now that I'm looking up parts. I went with the MOOG brand, which in many cases is better than the original parts. Here's the link to the one I bought. I just replaced the one side that was making noise and it's been flawless since: amzn.to/2B5a9I1
@@troysgarage I really appreciate the help!
A manual transmission nice 👍🏻
Practically a race car! 🤣🤘🏼
Nice! I’m at 257K in my 2005 S, all original suspension, and it’s all over the road. My turn. Quick struts turn out ok compared to how the stock springs felt? Btw- you polish the rims yourself? Looks great. That’s got to be time consuming.
Thanks man! On a much closer inspection the chrome has many cracks and is flaking off in some areas. The salt from winters is not good on vehicles! 😩 Getting ready to start the next project on this one. It wasn’t 2 weeks after posting that it broke down. Should be a quick easy fix but I had to tow it home. 🤷🏼♂️ More video content though right? 🤣
For the rotor on the knuckle, I had to use a 8lb sledge hammer to get that sucker off!! hahah, new rotors come with the screw holes to get it off next time thankfully :)
You must live in the rust belt. 😜
Did u make a video of how u painted the silver Corolla?
No this one was always that color and luckily the clear coat was better than most Corollas we’ve owned.
Thank you for the video I just did the front end rebuild on my corolla but I’m getting a squeaking noise from the RF and I checked all the bolts everything seems to be tight... do you have any idea what this noise may be? Got an alignment done after all repairs just want to throw that in.
I did new front struts (KYB) and bushing like you
Might just need to “settle” in a little. The only thing I can think would be one f the bushings isn’t squeezed (squozen - which isn’t a word but should be) tight enough to keep it from shifting. 🤷🏼♂️
Not sure if your are aware by now but your axe is missing a the balancer and if your boots were just torn you could have replaced the boots !
Never had an imbalance issue that I’m aware of with this car. We sold it a while back. Also as for just replacing the boots, I do not recommend that if you have any noise in the joint at all. Once there’s noise there’s damage. Replace the axle. Plus I’m not a fan of the boots. They last 2 years tops. Fix it right or don’t work on them. Too many people cut corners like that. Especially when they are getting ready to sell a car. These are huge red flags for me when looking at buying a used car. 🤷🏼♂️
Were your wheels that shiny? The wheels are nowhere near that polished on the 2k4 Corolla S I just bought.
They are indeed a high polish chrome finish. The salt here in Utah is not being kind to them though. Sadly! 😱
I know is been 1yr since this video was posted. I was wondering how did you make you wheels look so shiny have the the same car I would like to make mines like that? 👍
They look much better in the video than in person. I promise that! In reality the chrome is peeling and bubbling around most edges and the lugs. The main parts did polish up nicely though with very little effort. I simply scrubbed them as I washed the whole car. Spent a little extra time with a rag between the gaps. Other than that’s a trick of the lens. 🤷🏼♂️
@@troysgarage thanks for the reply. Mine are silver and the clear coat is peeling thought about just repainted them the same color but I like how yours look👍 I've heard that aircraft paint remover works we'll to remove the old paint and then just polished them up so you can get that polished aluminum look. 🤔
I heard the odometer only goes to 299,999 miles and stops there.
Fact!!! I now use my Trip A meter to log the miles over 299,999. Toyota says they can reprogram it to fix it for $450. I said “nope, I’m good!” Haha
@@troysgarage they should have made it right from the getgo. Its digital, why restrict it?
Absolutely! AND Toyota’s will run forever if we’ll cared for. I just bought my 5th Corolla and plan to sell our 04 and get an 08 to replace it.
@@troysgarage I'm actually about to do a 3" lift on mine. Sit it on some 27x8.50x15 AT's. 😁
Did u get your parts online or from a parts store?
Links in the description below
My 03 Corolla S rides too stiff. What can I do to get a softer ride?
I would start with struts. The springs wear out over time and don’t hold the car up like they used to. I replaced struts on my daughters 01 Elantra and the car now sits a full 1.5 inches taller and rides like new. You may also have other warn parts like ball joints and tie rods. Might be good to do a complete kit like I did. 🤷🏼♂️
Should the inner tie rods have a play in it ?
No all joints in steering should be tight. If not your hear clunking and have steering play/wander.
@@troysgarage the rubbers in my outer rods and the sway bar links are all busted. I guess that's where noise coming from
My odometer got stuck at 299,999 a few years ago (2018) ...
Yup same. I now use Trip A to track miles over 299,999. Sitting at 8k over right now.
Lol mine pad 300 k last year
And running, but suspension parts are dying..
I put new suspension on mine long ago. Cheaper than a truck payment!
Is your corolla japan made?
I don't think so, but not 100% certain.
Sadly I bought some structs on Amazon there already bad after 30k miles
That’s no good! 👎🏼 Sorry that happened to you. I’ve had good luck as long as the products have good reviews. I try to avoid low number of review products too.
How much oil does it burn?
Hard to tell because of the leaks. 🤷🏼♂️
What’s going on with the f250 ?
Garrett Pitt thanks for asking, we have been super busy! We have a surprise coming. Please be patient. We aren’t done with it yet! Big things coming!
I’m trying to be patient lol, the videos on your truck make me want to work on mine more. Hey where did you get that edelbrock air cleaner from?
I try to get everything I can from Amazon so I can easily share links. Like this: amzn.to/2Nv6fLb
You just did Dumb Stuff by tightening down the top of the strut b4 u had everything together again and the car back on the floor.
And yet the alignment was within 0.2% when put on the rack. Not so dumb after all. 🤷🏼♂️
For real your worthless bro...
U don't contribute....
You just spew shit everywhere you go.
