This and the M1 comparison were fantastic. I'm actually thinking about spending money and buying the P790 so following you close to see what you have to say. Normally I just build my sets from component makers but the 790 just has a nice enough look I'm willing to give em a go.
Just got fitted for new irons. I swang the pxg's and didnt even know i was swinging them. After hitting a few i looked down cuz they felt the best outta everything i swang to that point. Needless to say, i went with the 790's because they felt great too.
Good comparison Michael but you know which one I'd choose! Absolutely love mine, touch wood played either to my handicap, buffered, or shot below my handicap. Think that says it all. Cheers Michael hope all is well.
Michael ,I was wondering if you might have a opinion on irons. I am a 6 handicap and can not make my mind up between Callaway apex c16, Taylormade p790's, Ping G 400's or Sxrion z565. Hit them all inside on a monitor and all are close.
I tried both and the results of my games are the same. They are distinctly different, but the results are the same. It's the same thing as spending 10 grand on one bicycle and 10 grand on the other. They handle and ride differently, both enjoyable, but they do not affect my time going from point A to B in competitive events. Play whatever equipment you like, but equipment is just a small piece of the puzzle in making the game enjoyable and with good result. I think practice makes perfect still applies in golf.
Michael Newton Golf thanks m8. I enjoy the reviews and head to heads. I currently game the Srixon irons and Z565 driver but seriously considering the G400 driver from all he reviews I have read and seen.
I realize it's been a few years since you posted this, but I've been on the hunt lately for a forged iron set that is also quite forgiving. I've learned much in my quest for the perfect iron set for my game as a senior golfer struggling with old sports & military service injuries. My quest, by design dictates that I do my homework & due diligence, therefore, I should bring to your attention a few parts that might have been added to your otherwise informative content. 1) The P790 as I understand it, has only a forged face, while the body is cast. The PXG 0311XF on the other hand is entirely forged, meaning body as well. Why is this important you might ask? Well, it means the P790 cannot be adjusted for loft & lie angles to get better dialed in, whereas the 0311XF can be, because the entire body is forged as well. 2) Why is this important? Well, because some of us have loft & lie measuring & bending equipment, or access to a pro shop that can make little adjustments as needed. 3) I'm a disabled & retired US Navy Veteran living the dream in the Philippines and play at least 3 rounds a week as I don't have much else to do, my quest notwithstanding. I do have loft/lie equipment and know how to use it! Forged irons are of course, the easiest to adjust, and have the most satisfying feel for most golfers. 4) There was no mention of 50% discounts on PXG equipment for US Military members, both active duty and veterans, first responders, and police personnel. I do enjoy most of your content and hope my rantings might inspire you to dig a little deeper, perhaps beyond the "numbers". Thanks again for your efforts and may the New Year be prosperous for you!
PXG is a better club all around. UK Golf monthly does more in depth comparisons, and the PXGs consistently have the lowest difference in spin and carry during their testing (they hit a lot more than 5 balls). TM's are a little hotter out of the middle, but you pay for it with slight mishits (still super forgiving, but for me distance control is #1 with irons). They also feel and sound like a forged blade. Gen 3s are $150 a club in the states right now. That makes them the same cost as p790s. It's an easy choice at that point.
I tested the 790 yesterday and held it along side the std 0311 - they are literally identical so personally I think the 790 vs 0311 is a more direct comparison than XF. I didn't actually test the 790 against the PXG this time as I discounted it some time back due to price although I utterly love the 0311. Results for me yesterday were crystal clear, I play PSi currently so hit it vs 790 along side AP3, Epic pro, wilson, MP18 SC & MMC and several others. 790 was totally consistent in flight and dispersion and 11 yards longer than anything else even taking account of lofts (eg 790 7iron as long/longer than MP18 6 iron). Easy to hit, forgiving and lovely looks and feel. I'm sold. Just need to find some cash now!
Hi Jason - I could easily get a photo as buddy is a club builder and has all 3 of those. From memory the 0311 and 790 are almost identical and the AP2 is slightly thinner topline and squatter blade length. Will try to check.
I was like ...god dang those are some nice 5 irons to hit over 180 yd then when the performance data screen pops up and shows both clubs were 7 irons....I contemplated giving up golf.
Hi Michael, I've just sent you a email about the new PXG driving iron. I'm not sure if you'll get this message first before you read your emails. Cheers George
PXG has garbage customer service. If you get a good fitter I am sure you will be fine. But get one like the one I tried to schedule with and you will see what I mean. Getting rid of my PXG's as fast as possible because their shit customer service.

he meant swung
So -- you're telling me the P790's felt a bit better for you than the PXG? the reason why i;m asking is - i was going to get fitted on the PXG:)
Another great video, pxg has been my top choice but hopefully the p790 isn't too small for me
Thanks Matt.
I seem to like the bigger size of the PXG .. I’m currently hitting the P790 and want to switch over to a more distance and forgiving type club
Interesting..these are touted as as long and forgiving as anything out there. what would you be looking to sell the p790's for? Ha I may be interested
@@Kylez1212 one year late lol
Good comparison Michael but you know which one I'd choose! Absolutely love mine, touch wood played either to my handicap, buffered, or shot below my handicap. Think that says it all. Cheers Michael hope all is well.
+Geordie Sancaster great to hear your enjoying the irons!

go on what looks and feels the best to you
What did you end up buying Kristi? I have the Apex CF16 and love them.
this guy has really nice form
I love the 790, PXG are as always the Bentley of sticks, but the TaylorMade has my money.
Which model (XF or P) would compare more to the Z565's in size and performance?
Probably say the P’s, XF deffo bigger appearance than 565’s

Would you say the p790 are more forgiving than the p770? Any chance of a comparison video of the two? Thanks!
Great vid mike when is the p790 being released mate thanks
Michael are you going to review the new cleveland range and some head to heads.
Off topic: what's the chances to get you to do a head to head Srixon Z565 driver vs Ping G400?
William Russell I'll try William
Michael Newton Golf thanks m8. I enjoy the reviews and head to heads. I currently game the Srixon irons and Z565 driver but seriously considering the G400 driver from all he reviews I have read and seen.
So, even with the speedfoam, the PXG still is #1 for feel! They can copy but still not get it the same. lol
Marginal difference in feel for what, a third the price??? Seems like a great trade off. And the TM looks way better. PXG = ugly
Taylormade had the foam insurt way back. I remember the r9 irons had them.
@VWRabbit2008 Well, duhh
Why not include the Titleist TMB irons in this test ?
Waqar Ghulam purely because Titleist don’t provide the TMB head on their Custom Fit Cart! Too expensive to supply heads to all fitting accounts

Actually you should compare the 790 to the pxg0311t version. A better comparison.
no pxg0311 p version is same category as p790. the 0311t version compares to p770
What brand of hat is that?
Great video! Any chance of comparing the 790 against the original 0311?
Yes can add to my list though I would say the 0311 is more match to the P770 iron

Adam Holt Thanks for that Adam. Do you happen to know from a top line view how the 0311 compares to the 790 or even the AP2?
Hi Jason - I could easily get a photo as buddy is a club builder and has all 3 of those. From memory the 0311 and 790 are almost identical and the AP2 is slightly thinner topline and squatter blade length. Will try to check.

Slow delivery time. Anticipation makes it even longer
Hi Michael, I've just sent you a email about the new PXG driving iron. I'm not sure if you'll get this message first before you read your emails. Cheers George
+Geordie Sancaster just replied George
790 definitely wins on looks, that sole on PXG is massive.
+Michael Pasvantis wide sole is never a bad thing
TM has equal distance, steeper decent, similar feel, and better looks, for close to a third the price? PXG = ugly
ugly......really
Michael Newton Golf yes I think they are not attractive. But just my opinion.
Should have compared the 0311P, the XF is not even remotely the same iron.
He wanna throw those xf’s in the bag lol I feel it
PXG. steam punk!
PXG has garbage customer service. If you get a good fitter I am sure you will be fine. But get one like the one I tried to schedule with and you will see what I mean. Getting rid of my PXG's as fast as possible because their shit customer service.
