So, I won a set of these directly from Taylormade through a local Rep. I received them the day they were released, fully built. I have a 4-AW set makeup, shafted with KBS S-Taper shafts tuned to basically a 6.1 frequency. So, basically a Stiff + flex. 1.5* flat, standard lofts. My usual gamers are Adams Pro Black MB's w/ KBS Tour shafts in an X. I got in 3 practice sessions, and 3 rounds in in the 2 weeks, before last. And, I have to be honest here, these things are actually really sweet! They were obviously far too long, considering the lofts, a 30.5* 7 iron?!? Holy balls! Anyway, they do NOT play like a GI or even mid GI club (which is kind of what they are). They look basically identical to the AP2 at address and feel really, really good. Better than the AP2, I'd say (which isn't hard). They're workable, they're easy to hit and it's fun to hit it that long. A 212-15 yard 7 iron?? That's fun!! However, not really conducive to scoring, which is my focus. What is, or I should say, WAS missing from this set was the scorability factor. Because of the lofts, I had some weird gapping low in the set, and some other issues relating to loft. Last Thursday however (9/7), I went ahead and had them adjusted to match the lofts of my usual gamers, which is 34* on the 7 iron, and on from there. They're forged, so, they were easy to bend. And, once I did that, these things REALLY came alive for me personally. They're still about 1 club long, even matching loft to loft. My low this year was a 1 under, 71 (72). And my low in the last five years, was a 2 under 69 (71). After I adjusted these, I played my home track (which houses my State's Open Championship annually) to a 3 under 68 (72). Usually you've got to factor in putting, but honestly, I didn't have a great putting day, finishing with 34 putts. Where the difference was, frankly, was the iron play. Shots were better, and results were more consistent. I'm a high spin player, so, I have to go long, and let the ball come back. These spun less, but, still enough to nicely stop. These clubs, for whatever reason, are just very, very easy to hit. They're also laser accurate when you put a move on one. I can't tell you how many times I've ended up short when missing by just a hair with my blades. These allow that miss, and don't penalize you an ungodly amount. Other clubs are forgiving, but, not in this profile and not in this target demographic. Better players could play an i25, or i200, but, they're not a club that looks like a players club. I think TM is looking for the mid-handicapper who wants a blade, but, can't play it. And, they got this one right, because not only do they get that guy, they're also getting the guy who can play a blade, but, doesn't want to work that hard. Let me just also clarify, I am ABSOLUTELY NOT a TM fanboy. So, for me to compliment these, is saying something, because frankly, TM has been steamy dog poo (irons wise and IMO) for a long, long time and I've not even bothered to look there or demo any of their sticks, in the last 6-8 years. I don't know if the speed foam matters, but, PXG sells the shit out of their "foam" inserts in their 0311XFm which I have also hit, and they don't feel anywhere near as good as these do - at more than twice the cost..... Honestly, it's not even close. The only other foam filled hollow blade I've hit that felt close to this good was the KZG HB516, which was awesome - well, at least the first generation! At the end of the day, I think they're worth a look. If you're a blade or CB type player, and you're looking for something a little easier, and more consistent to hit, these would be a really nice option. They look good, they feel great, and the playability is off the chart. Overall a nice set, that will probably stay in my bag for a while.
I bought a set (4-PW) of these irons when they were brand new in 2018. I was still a single figure handicap, but as I was getting older and in my late 50’s, I wanted a little more help and forgiveness. I still wanted a traditional looking iron as well so there wasn’t much if any choice out there. As soon as I tried out these irons, I feel in love with them. Not only did they look gorgeous, they were easy to hit with great feel and looked very traditional. It really ticked all the boxes. Theses clubs would suit someone who’s a low handicap but looking for a bit of help and forgiveness or a person who’s reached a level where cavity back irons feel too chunky. They are a good introduction to blade irons for someone who is coming down from 14 - single figure handicap. I won’t be upgrading these for another couple of years until I need to change shaft flex as they are the best irons that I’ve ever hit and beautiful to look at.
I was fitted and bought a full set of P790’s yesterday. I currently have the RSi2 iron which are fantastic irons but I was blown away by the P790 and just had to buy them. I did try all of the P range plus many other brands but I couldn’t believe the look, feel & consistency of the P790. My handicap is 6.
I just bought these irons and agree with you about look, feel and consistency. Tested against Titleist AP2 & AP3. It looks perfect behind ball compared to Titleist clubs. Feel is just superb when hitting to sweet spot. Off center hits also come out suprisingly good loosing hardly any distance. Very high launch concidering the loft. Titleist AP3 produced similiar ball flight but i didn't like the too soft feel in that club and it was not consistent enough compared to P 790. Compared to my old Callaway X20 clubs i gained 10-15m distance and ball is launching much higher. Can't say about spin rates but it seemed like good values since ball was sucking itself up in to air. I was blown away how big difference there was to my old clubs. Can't wait to take these clubs to a round.
Rick, thanks for your review on the P790s. I was just fitted and ordered the P790s. Really loved the feel and distance results I got. Evidently my current irons (Ping i25s) shafts were all wrong for me. My fitter (Sittlers Golf Center, Ricky Kline) identified several issues and set me up big time. Really excited for this golf season. Thanks for your thorough review.
Rick, I think you must have had an off-day when you tested the P770 and P750 in Orlando. I suggest you retest them, now that the remainder of the family has launched. Maybe a 7-iron comparison from P-790 all the way down to the P-730
Any plan to test the updated version of these Rick? The “superseded version” is priced very keenly if you can get hold of them. They have some minor cosmetic changes which I don’t really care about but would be curious to hear whether you felt there was any significant improvement to performance feel or sound.
After 90 mins and a full fitting session at my home course with the Taylormade rep on hand, I now own these beauties. 4-pw with NS PRO Modus 105 shafts... marvellous :-) Cheers Rick for the review. BTW the 4 iron for me is outstanding and very consistent strike. keep up the good work.
I went with the same shafts! But I did 5-AW...Depending on how the 5i goes, I may go back for the 4i...love the concept of getting some accuracy at that distance and leaving hybrids and fairways in the bag until absolutely necessary..
4 iron is my saviour on shorter par 4s, or there's very little room with trees on both sides on a tight fairway. Even off the fairway it works for me :-)
Working at a golf course, I can answer this question. Most likely what is happening here is that his Pro V's and picked with the other balls, and when being washed, they are sorted out from the range balls.
Got a 3-AW set in Ft Lauderdale, with a Nippon 95 shafts, 2 degrees flat, regular loft and length. Amazing to recover, at 58 years of age, the distance of years long past-by plus the control and feel of mi Mizunos MP68. Gap between clubs is quite regular in full swings, from 130 yards with the PW to about 210 with the 3I -I later got the 2I (driving Iron), which can well reach 240+ yards from off the tee. Must use higher-end golf balls, as “distance” balls become difficult to control, not to mention shaping the shot. Takes a few rounds to realize one can truly trust these irons, astonishing in pure hit shots and quite forgiving in slight misshits. Nevertheless, getting fitted for these clubs is a must.
Hey Rick love the review as always. Apologies if I missed this but what shafts were you using for this review and were they the new grey Tour Velvet 360 grips? Interested in these with the AMT's but now apparently TT is making an AMT Tour White. Have you had a chance to hit the new one? Cheers!
Tbh I am kinda sceptical about the speed foam, I'm wondering about the durability of the club for players with a higher smash factor and higher swing speed.
I was just fitted, to replace my 1982 Eyes 2. After trying different shafts with different club heads, it came down to the P790 or Rogue Pro. The feel and look, and obviously forgiveness, led me to choosing the P790. Numbers were very similar. I was fitted on a trackman, using a 6 iron. While hitting between 175-185, and getting maybe 7-8 yards of roll, I felt that even though my spin rate decreased, I was getting more distance and accuracy from these clubs. I currently am a 17 HC.
I just bought this set at a huge discount thanks to the new model being released! Finally got my dream set of clubs and finally moved on from my old Maxfli VHL clubs.
Im considering doing the same thing. They are at a "discount" here now. 800£. Im still rocking my callaway x18's but they are falling apart from wear and tear.
Rick what does it take for you to put a particular club in your bag? For example, after hitting these, would you consider replacing your current irons?
Rick, curious. I just went back and looked at the Tour Preferred MC 2012 model. Still playing this model with zero complaints. You were hitting that 7 Iron 165-170. Now hitting the 790 model 190+. Do you attribute that to your personal swing improvement, equipment, or what? You did a 5 year drive comparison but would like to see an iron comparison as well. Thanks
I have been researching and experimenting for months now, as I've been ready to let go of my old Callaway X20's that I had custom fit by Hot Stix about 11 years back. I could never get more than 135 yards out of my 7 iron (my 6 went about the same and the 5 felt clunky) So, I'd end up using hybrids or coming up short on par 2's beyond that distance. I had demo'd a variety of clubs and have been experimenting with a single Ping G400 Max (7 iron only) for the last few weeks and it just wasn't doing it for me. My distance wasn't improving and I wasn't getting the feedback I needed. I was also annoyed with the fine chrome finish starting to wear off on the first trip to the range with the Pings. So I went out to the PGA Superstore today, grabbed the M4, MCGB's and P790 irons. I figured the P790's would be hard for me to hit being a high teens handicapper. But I added them to the mix after seeing this review. I simply could not believe how far they went and how good they felt. I gained 30 yards on average with the P790's compared to my Callaway's. (165 yds vs 135 yds) Granted the M4's went far too - but it felt a tad heavy and the feel wasn't there. My longest came in at 177 (total) which was absolutely shocking to me for a 7 irons. I ordered them up and am pretty pumped to get this next chapter started. Thanks for bringing these to my attention Rick - I really thought these clubs were out of my league until you brought them into focus!
Thanks heaps for the honesty and fun of your review as always. I'm a Taylor Made fan and after this video have added this to my must buy list, which I'll go down to my local golf shop and get fitted for as soon as I can.
Hey rick I'm about anywhere between a 15-20 handicap depending on how much I've drank that day j/k. I had the jpx900 forged but had a problem getting height outta those irons. Would you recommend the p770 or p790 ? Thanks
Rick I had the RSI 1 (until they were stolen from my car today) when I started playing 2 years ago and went from 21hcp down to 10hcp I'm interested in getting fitted for the first time with the P-790 are they somewhat similar to the RSI 1??
Hi Rick would you recommend these irons for someone who is looking to tae golf more seriously, I do play and I'm comfortable hitting irons off the ground but want a set to take my game to the next level, regards
b Tommy Douglas ....me to ...if a pro can only get that performance then what does that give the rest of us...the gapping is a nightmare...or is the 4 just super hard to hit? Not for me and my only just single digit handicap
the problem is, if u look in the website the difference from pw to 7 iron is like 15degrees roughly where as from 7 to 4 is only 9 degrees. that however, can be fixed by ur local pro or when ure ordering. i also think shielsy missed a lot of his shots with the four iron and should have hit them again
@@olove9395 if you're looking for forged check out AP2s or T100s. In TM look P760. They have decent feel and better lofts with 7 at 34 or 35. I play CB/MBs which are 35 degrees at 7 iron, originally thought id like p790s but lofts were wayyyyy too strong.
Hi RS. Greetings from Bangkok Thailand. What you reccommend between TM P790 or AP3 718. My HC is around 8 but my herniate disc hurt 3 years ago. Just came back to play for a year. Want to make my gokf easier as I cant hit as hard as before. Now I am using my old set Mizuno MP30 but losing 10 yards.
What's the best iron you have ever hit from 2017-18 category then? I'm a 2 handicap and good player. I'm picking up a 3 iron p790 with X100 in it this upcoming week and thinking of buying whole set.
I wonder if the weather has any effect on the foam, be it high heat of sitting in a car's trunk on a 95* day or playing in the fall when it's 45*. That would be interesting to see tested, but I'm sure TM ironed out those details in beta.
Tried these clubs at American golf and love the feel of them. Playing with a set of taylormade burner plus at mo off an 18 handicap and just off to order these after a fitting . At 55 hope I can get a few shots of my handicap ?? Will update how they play after a few rounds when I pick them up ...
Mr. Rick I'm pretty fresh into playing. First fitting started out with Callaway apex.hit them great, but the look started getting to me. I know that's a silly thing to say. Traded them in for the taylormade M4s just on looks over playability (I know bad form) really disliked the feel and playability. Watched your reviews of the P790s witch I was looking at for awhile and just came in today btw. I'm very excited to play them, and just wanted to let you know you were a great influence for my decision.
Is it just the shafts that's in them that don't suit you probably for the height there going. Bit tip soft possibly. What shafts are in them?? Love the look of these and want to get a fitting on them soon.
nothing to do with this video, but I just had a quick question. If you were a 13- 18 handicap and had to choose from callaway x2 hot, or nike vapor fly which set of irons would you say is better. Thanks!
I saw this club at my local shop today and was very curious as to where it was positioned in their line. I did not hit it but thought the look was outstanding. I came home to see what Rick thought of it. He had some nice things to say. I will hit it and add a comment for us very average golfers consideration.
So im kind of in a rut right now. Im currently a 6/7 handicap and have 2016 m2 irons and want something that's a little bit more towards a players iron than a "game improving" any recommendations?
Hey Rick, I have a question about distance differences from irons to woods/driver. I hit my drives around 300 yards with an 8.5 degree driver(I have a really hit ball flight) and around 250 with my 15 degree 3 wood. I only get around 165-170 yards on my 7 iron, and around 200 on my 4 iron. What are some possible reasons for this occurring?
Thank you bud! Never thought of that! I have a below average Iron Distance for my comparative driver distance, and am wondering why that is. Obviously the way I swing the club makes it go that far I am wondering what I can change to adjust that.
I had already ordered these clubs before watching this video and Rick has only reinforced what I felt after trying them out. I wanted a club that launched high and came down steep but still maintained distance and these did all that and more. I also tried the new MCGB and JPX900 HOT irons and neither compared to the feel and control of these irons. I cannot wait for my new set but will have to as TM have entirely sold out and have been taken aback by their popularity !
Irons like this and pxg make me wonder about the gel or plastic inserted into them right? I'm thinking after X amount of hits you could have inner deformation, weaking, and less elasticity creating a muted golf club that you spend 1k+ on.
Hi, Rick. I'm upset to know if you could help me with the choice of irons. I'm trying to update my bag, I've been playing my Callaway X-22 for years and it's time to change them. In my country, Argentina, it is difficult and expensive to buy irons and within my reach I had the lines of Taylormade. I am tempted to buy the P 790 or the P 770. Usually my handicap is around 14 .. Could you help me? Greetings and thanks.
Crossfield reviewed the p770 the other day and really liked them. Rick, as he said in this video, does not that much. So what do we learn from this ? Get fitted.....i'm using Nike irons at the moment so will do that in the near future. These irons look really good though.
I'm currently a 25 handicap (and dropping) and play the Burner 2.0 irons. Would the P790 clubs be a good next set for me or is there a better TM set? Possibly the M1's or , M2's?
Being a 25 capper means you will pretty much suck no matter what brand or type of club you use because you haven't even learned a good semi-consistent swing that makes good solid contact with the ball yet. The club manufacturers will of course always promise you the moon but I guarantee you your equipment is the least of your problems. Once you've learned a proper swing, you can play well even when using ratty 100-year-old hickory clubs.
Ouch, right between the eyes with that reply. You're right however, but I'm working on it. The P790's are not for a player of my skills (or lack of them). To be honest, I play some real good golf at times, then the Blow Up holes kill me. That's golf though, it's a great game.
@John Klein. I used to be a 25 capper myself 12 yrs ago and at the time owned several expensive name-brand sets of irons as well as cheapie generic clone sets. The day I finally happened to hit my first several long and pure shots at the range with my cheap iron set ($180 Golden Bear GB-1 bought at Sports Authority) was the day I TRULY understood that proper swing technique matters far far more than using expensive name-brand equipment. And by pure shots I mean the ball was powerfully struck at the center of the clubface, picked clean barely touching the mat, made a very satisfying soft click sound, and went 20 yds farther and much higher than normal off-center chunky skully shots. For a 25 capper to experience hitting those pure shots for the first time was absolute joy and enlightenment!
I've hit those shots and agree with your assessment. Consistency is the issue and through lessons I understand what I need to do. Now it's a matter of putting it into practice. I can do it pretty regularly at the range bit still inconsistent on the course with the various lies etc. One thing that is appealing to me is that I'm told (by Roger Dunn fitters) that I need my clubs +1" in length and 2 degrees upright. They've set up those clubs for me and they're so much easier to hit. Add the fact that the head of my 7 iron snapped off from all my lessons work. That's why I'm looking at a new set of irons. Your point is well taken, it's the archer not the arrow, but every little bit helps. My handicap is inching down little by little.
@ John Klein. Your clubs are only "fitted" to you using the perfectly flat surface of a range mat. Those "fitted" clubs no longer fit you when played from the uneven lies of a golf course. That's why understanding and using proper techniques to hit the ball that's sitting at different lie angles with a club not adjusted for that lie is more important than fitting for a perfectly flat lie. Even with off-the-shelf cheapie clubs that don't fit me, I can easily compensate for it by adjusting my body position, grip up or down on the club, and stand closer or farther away from the ball to make a solid strike. It's what you mostly do on the course anyway. You may have also noticed that your club manufacturer/fitter can only bend irons to the desired lie angle but they can't bend many brands of drivers/fairways/hybrids because the short hosels of those clubs will be damaged when bent. So I guess fitting your clubs to the correct lie angle isn't as majorly important as they try to make you think after all.
Andy Titcomb what Ryan wrote is one way. Buy what I believe taylormade did and another way is they create the shape with a cast that has a solid interior but is filled with a special material that burns away after the process is complete. Leaving you a hollow head.
I have enjoyed your reviews. Been using `ping I 3's for 15 years..with some added weight. Looking for a new set...thinking about pgx 311s, mizuno jpx forged or taylormade 790s maybe ping g400's. Im an 8 handicap. I think i like the pxgs better...crazy price. Any thoughts or other clubs I should try. In the new irons I am testing with prject x LZ 5.5 shaft.
Tom Ryder Tom, try the PXG XF model absolutely fantastic clubs I play off 6 and my god these clubs do perform very well but it’s the feel of them that you’ll love, yes expensive but worth every penny you won’t regret it if golf is your passion. Enjoy PXG XF
The only club I've seen that would tempt me to give up my AP2's. Starting to loose my swing speed with age (near 50) and playing off 15. May have to go for a little look at them, and do a comparison on the simulator with my current set. More result for less effort sounds good to me. Mind you will need to feel sweet to best the AP2's.
12 handicap, currently playing the m2's. I've never been able to pick up a club while testing it and hit it flush or consistent until a few swings in until I tested out these clubs at golf galaxy. My first to last swing with each club of the P790 felt absolutely amazing. I've also never been fitted for clubs, so I think if I can convince my wife to let me upgrade this upcoming season, I am definitely going to get the P790's and get fitted, especially after watching a couple of your review videos on these clubs. Love your videos Rick Shiels, keep it up!
Got to give them credit for innovating. Seems they've got a club more similar in look and feel to a blade, but with the extra forgiveness. Strong lofts, but high launches and it seems to have found another niche in the market where you have a feel and traditional looks based club that higher handicappers that can't handle genuine blades can use. Would love to see head to head comparisons of these clubs with more traditional lofted ones, but not based on number on the club or even loft. Just whatever clubs get you the same distance. So if you hit a modern 7 iron 200 yards then compare that to the traditional club you'd have to hit to get there (maybe as low as 5 iron) and see how stopping power compares then. I suspect traditional ones with more spin will still have more control and stop, but I don't think the differences are massive since the modern clubs maybe launch higher when comparing clubs that go the same distance.
Beautiful clubs, but I really like the feel of the 770's. Don't know why you think they're hard -- there's a dullness to them, kind of a thud at strike, which I like a lot. Competes with Titleist and Srixon forged for sure.
His carry on the P-790 7 iron was 181. When he tested the P770 it was at 174 and the M1 was at 184. My thoughts is that the degrees of loft are same in the M1 and P790 and I believe the lowest club is the 3. Also the spins are similar in the P790 and M1. TM should make the same design but more fitting to their P770 to use as Mizuno did with Mp-h5 irons, making a 1, 2, 3 at same lofts as the MP5's.
Rick, I really enjoy your videos. I have a question. When you do a club review and club comparison; why don’t you put them up against “what’s in your bag.” I would be interested in how they compare; workability, distance, dispersion, etc. We all know you strike the ball very well.
Looks fantastic. Great review rick! My only concern is that all these new irons are getting ridiculous price tags. Hopefully this sits in around 700£ or like 750€
I really like the look of them and i hit a demo 7 iron about 185 at golftec. I'm sure it's because of the strong loft. That's the only demo iron they had in the 790's. But i too am concerned about the gapping between the 7 and the PW. 50 yards, with only two clubs in there? I've seen several others ask about the gapping concerns but don't see a single reply from Rick or others addressing it. I'd love to buy a set of these, to replace my old TM R11's (yes, it's time), but i don't want to have a 50 yard gap to fill with just two clubs. (and then going higher, he only picks up about 30 yards going from 7 to 4)
Tried them and they felt great but the heads seemed heavy and the website shows a swing weight of D2 for the long/mid irons. D0 is all I can tolerate with my weak hands.
Daymon Johnson going for a fitting on Monday so will have a chat with fitter about the lofts. Maybe take some of your advice on board.
Daymon Johnson when you bent the clubs back to the usual loft for the clubs did you notice an increase in spin?
Yes, absolutely! Even prior to bending them I had plenty of spin, once back at normal loft ranges though, I did see an uptick in spin.
Excellent comment and one all should read. Definitely need to weaken the low end to reduce the gap.... PW > 7 50 yards! Yikes.
Daymon Johnson I just ordered this p790 3-7 and p770 8-pw with True Temper 105 shaft. When I was getting fitted, it felt pretty good.
Love people saying they copied PXG. TM had a blade look, foam filled iron in the early 90's. They are not new to this concept.
How are these for a mid handicapped player? Shooting a high 80 low 90.
Thanks!
I like the P790s. Even the shots that felt like miss hits off the club face had a decent, forgiving ball flight.
Any plan to test the updated version of these Rick? The “superseded version” is priced very keenly if you can get hold of them. They have some minor cosmetic changes which I don’t really care about but would be curious to hear whether you felt there was any significant improvement to performance feel or sound.
I've had these clubs for 3 months now. Best set I've ever had!
So the 4 iron only goes 20 yards further than the 7 iron.....
Even off the fairway it works for me :-)
I currently play RSi2 irons and an upgrade is on the horizon. Wonder how these compare?
How do you get your pro V ones back from the range Rick?
David McCaig I’ve been thinking about that for a while too
Working at a golf course, I can answer this question.
Tried the 8 iron of this set a while back, nice irons awesome feel if they continue the speed foam for a couple years my next set could look into them
2023 and I just bought some. And my god do I love them
Hey Rick love the review as always.
I'm doing the same👍🏻
Im considering doing the same thing. They are at a "discount" here now. 800£. Im still rocking my callaway x18's but they are falling apart from wear and tear.
Just got a set of 2017 edition p790 4 to pw with grip master roo swinger leather grips for $1100 AUD. Close enough to half the price of the 2019 set.
Oh yeah, I was at a demo day and I'm choosing between the P790s and the G410 irons. I hit some great shots with those.
I hit these myself today and I'm in love😍
Hey Rick, which irons do you like more, Taylormade PSI or the P790? I purchased a used set of PSIs but haven't played them yet. Thanks.
Hey rick I'm about anywhere between a 15-20 handicap depending on how much I've drank that day j/k. I had the jpx900 forged but had a problem getting height outta those irons. Would you recommend the p770 or p790 ? Thanks
I'm curious to see how the foam reacts in the elements. Cold vs hot weather.
kenneth tarrant good question!
I think it does nothing but mute that hollow head to be honest. They should put mute foam inside the drivers.
I was curious if any testing has been done regarding extreme weather conditions and effects on the foam and cavity. Cold vs extreme heat.
20 yrd difference from 7 to 4 iron? But 50 yards difference between 7 to pitch?
b Tommy Douglas ....me to ...if a pro can only get that performance then what does that give the rest of us...the gapping is a nightmare...or is the 4 just super hard to hit?
Not for me and my only just single digit handicap
I love the tech ideas but gapping seems to get lost. Ping I bade seems to have better gapping with similar tech.
the problem is, if u look in the website the difference from pw to 7 iron is like 15degrees roughly where as from 7 to 4 is only 9 degrees. that however, can be fixed by ur local pro or when ure ordering. i also think shielsy missed a lot of his shots with the four iron and should have hit them again
I like the tech ideas. Feel with insert and shape, extra weight. If the gapping improves it would be a consideration
Robin C use "pro" loosely.
Would this be a good club to move on to from the old R11’s?? Looking to make an upgrade after 8 some odd years.
i have same question like you
The lofts always turn me off. I don't need extra help with distance, I need better spin to stop shots on the green.
What irons do you currently play? I just got fitted for 2019 p790s and feel that I do not need the extra distance it provides either.
Have you tested to see if the performance changes at deferent temperatures? Seems the foam would harden while cold and soften during hot days?
Hey Rick, is Rob coming on soon to do some testing of these and also please have him on for the new AP Titleist testing in a coupe of days. Cheers
Hi RS. Greetings from Bangkok Thailand. What you reccommend between TM P790 or AP3 718. My HC is around 8 but my herniate disc hurt 3 years ago. Just came back to play for a year. Want to make my gokf easier as I cant hit as hard as before. Now I am using my old set Mizuno MP30 but losing 10 yards.
tanapholrp go AP3 with recoil smacwrap shafts.
AP3 has a lighter head weight, will be easier on your back
@@raginasianinvasion Thank you very much.
What's the best iron you have ever hit from 2017-18 category then? I'm a 2 handicap and good player. I'm picking up a 3 iron p790 with X100 in it this upcoming week and thinking of buying whole set.
How about forgiveness of long irons? Which is better TM P790 or Mizuno MP20 HMB?
I wonder if the weather has any effect on the foam, be it high heat of sitting in a car's trunk on a 95* day or playing in the fall when it's 45*.
That would be interesting to see tested, but I'm sure TM ironed out those details in beta.
Tried these clubs at American golf and love the feel of them. Playing with a set of taylormade burner plus at mo off an 18 handicap and just off to order these after a fitting . At 55 hope I can get a few shots of my handicap ?? Will update how they play after a few rounds when I pick them up ...
Mr. Rick
I'm pretty fresh into playing.
Hey guys or rick. do you know when the new Titleist range of irons is avalible for the puplic to buy?
Is it just the shafts that's in them that don't suit you probably for the height there going. Bit tip soft possibly. What shafts are in them?? Love the look of these and want to get a fitting on them soon.
Didn't you insta a 2 iron of this range? Would love to see you review/compare that to your Callaway one.
nothing to do with this video, but I just had a quick question. If you were a 13- 18 handicap and had to choose from callaway x2 hot, or nike vapor fly which set of irons would you say is better. Thanks!
Callaway. But what would I know?
what shaft and flex were these sampled with?
Tony DiCicco With Rick's swing these shafts were probably the stiff shafts that come stock with the p790s.
I saw this club at my local shop today and was very curious as to where it was positioned in their line. I did not hit it but thought the look was outstanding. I came home to see what Rick thought of it. He had some nice things to say. I will hit it and add a comment for us very average golfers consideration.
Rick, have you tested the 2 iron against the 2 iron from PXG.
Would love to see that.
Cheers.
So im kind of in a rut right now. Im currently a 6/7 handicap and have 2016 m2 irons and want something that's a little bit more towards a players iron than a "game improving" any recommendations?
TwoDopeWhales
I use Nike vr tw irons forged and I'm same 6-7 handicap they have improved my game
I have the same numbers. The only one that looked a little off was the 4iron. 210 would be a better number. Perhaps a hybrid could fix that.
Would you pick these over the Apex 19s? How do they compare to them?
Had a bash of the 9 iron on 17th Edinburgh Wentworth - 9 iron stopped on a sixpence - great feel little or no offset great club
just started watching your site and enjoying it , and thinking of buying a new set of irons ,so this is helping decide
I love how these irons are doing the same thing as the m2 irons but he's not bashing on them like the m2s
Hi Rick I have ordered a set of P790 irons on 4th Dec can't wait for them to come.
Rick, I bought a set but I notice that some irons say tungsten but others dont...any insight?
@John Klein.
Could you please reply what shaft you tested these with? TY
Rick would love for you to show us around that bay. Clubs in the bag. What people are putting on your wall after lessons etc
How do you forge a hollow club?
Andy Titcomb it's a 2 piece construction that is welded together. I have a tour edge exotics driving iron that is made the same way.
Andy Titcomb what Ryan wrote is one way. Buy what I believe taylormade did and another way is they create the shape with a cast that has a solid interior but is filled with a special material that burns away after the process is complete. Leaving you a hollow head.
They send in tiny nano bot miners with little picks to hollow it out
Can u compare this to the i blades from ping and the Wilson fg6?
Rick, would you consider a combo 790/770 set -- or go 790s all the way?
What flex shaft are you using during your review?
Hey rick, do you know if they are coming out with a 790 UDI?
Hi Rick, these irons look really nice. How do they compare against the Callaway XR Pro?
These are comparable to the PXG 0311X irons in the lawsuit ?
No...they are comparable to the PXG 0311XF irons. Review shows them to be very close in results.
by any case, will the speed foam break apart inside the club ?
Rick what do you think about the sound these irons make?
What shaft are you using in this video
I suspect traditional ones with more spin will still have more control and stop, but I don't think the differences are massive since the modern clubs maybe launch higher when comparing clubs that go the same distance.
no name haha innovating.. copying PXG you mean?
Beautiful looking club.......not a huge fan of the hollow head designs though.....I like mid to small size cavity backs.
Beautiful clubs, but I really like the feel of the 770's. Don't know why you think they're hard -- there's a dullness to them, kind of a thud at strike, which I like a lot. Competes with Titleist and Srixon forged for sure.
This or the Mizuno JPX 919 forged?? ;)
Definitely this
These remind me of the Adams XTD Forged irons. I have that set and they feature much of this tech save for the filling. Great clubs.
Just pre-ordered these irons in Black. Thanks Rick
Great looking club and I like the hollow head concept, but I'm starting to question the need for so many different iron models from TM and Callaway.
Hopefully this sits in around 700£ or like 750€
Over a g
Someone help me out.... looking to pick these up, what’s the difference from the p770 irons? They’re 500$ cheaper...
Can you say anything about the new taylormade improver iron that is coming out?
Beautiful, gonna try to get this in a 3 iron can't wait for that
I really like the look of them and i hit a demo 7 iron about 185 at golftec.
(and then going higher, he only picks up about 30 yards going from 7 to 4)
This might be the first TM iron I will get - I will still bend it to 1 deg more. No way I am playing PW @ 45. I need it 46.
Yo Rick, what’s up with the M4 review and how does it compare with the P790?
30.5°! That's a 6-iron.
Hey Rick, would it be interesting to put the P-790 against the PXG 0311 and see the difference?
Tried them and they felt great but the heads seemed heavy and the website shows a swing weight of D2 for the long/mid irons. D0 is all I can tolerate with my weak hands.
How are these Compared to z765?
Ordered these with c-taper lites. Can't wait!
