So can we just build normal sized 3, 4, 5" drones and put this thing off a 3.3v pad of the fc 🤔 I wouldn't see why not provided the pad can handle the 2 amps. Can make your quad lighter and if it's cheaper than a vista or air unit I'm in especially for cinewhoops
Great review! I'm really happy to see how fast Walksnail is improving this system. My only criticism (on the video) would be that the HDZero video quality looks much worse mostly due to the whoop camera. HDZero can look better than that with a better camera. This was mostly a range & break-up test though
HDZero can look better, but we are comparing the Whoop vTX bundle to the Aatar Mini bundle. You could buy the Whoop vTX separately, use a heavier camera, and then get a little better image quality at about the same weight, I suppose. That's just not an option I tested -- mostly because my HDZero whoop is ready to go and I don't want to gut it just to increase the weight and make it fly worse.
@@JoshuaBardwell That's a good point! I'm running the whoop vtx with the Runcam HDZero Micro camera (on a 3" toothpick) and it looks amazing. I completely skipped the Nano Lite camera lol
It is very interesting - I have a vrx kit on order to put on my HDZero goggles. Only thing I take issue with is your focus on video penetration over flight feel (lag and weight). I think you said you are working on that video, so I'll look for it
@@jmcjmc5587 the sneaky thing Bardwell left out of this dvr is the SRT track showing the lag vs time. He doesn't belive people feel lag spikes or at least that it doesn't matter to anyone
@@RyanQuellet Exact why not to put the SRT? I feel the lag and I have ask him if there's lag behind the barn but it don't respond me. If you look the video behind the barn HDZ is superior to WS with half the power.
@@jmcjmc5587 to be clear, I'm not saying hdzero is superior there - I'm pointing out that an important metric to people that fly and not just sight see is the lag and lag spikes. Hdzero is smooth as butter, others are not - Let's stop hiding this fact
Nah. Accept the facts, hdzero is just an improved analog. Even you have stability, that annoying rainbow flicks will knock you out while flying. And for WS, That's the compression of a variable system. DJI does that so this should not be new to us. It's pretty clear you have biases on a system that makes fpv community divided.
@@smoke2584 OK. So if HDZ is an improved analog then everything is an analog improved , even dji and ws. HDZ is not an analog pal/ntsc system. On DJI and WS you have not rainbow but you have super lag that make people crash.
great review! I actually prefer the way the HDzero looks at the end... its more pixelated yes, but there is more detail in shadows etc because of lack of compression. Seems like it might be easier/ more reliable to fly proximity
OMG! WOW! I haven't completed watching your video but I've got a question. What do you think the signal would be if we bring it far like a mile or like bandos?
Walksnail looks crisp and clear, HDzero its between analog and Walksnail, plus the sparkles i do not like at all on HDZero, Walksnail all the way... FU... DJI
Sometimes I feel like HDZero doesn't really get a fair shake outside of the racing scene. It's not trying to do the same things as DJI/Walksnail, and it seems to excel in racing applications. And I think its crucial to note that DJI/walksnail are basically not usable in 99% of races. Street league (bless them) have been allowing DJI in their races since they've been doing a lot of work getting their rotor hazard timer to work with it. Not the case in the vast majority of races. So if you're racing and you really crave better image than analog, then HDZero is kind of your only choice. Not that winning by default is really admirable, but it should be said. It goes unsaid in almost all of these comparison videos that HDZero is one way transmission, so you're not interfering with other pilots with your goggles, and timing systems work as expected. We always see how it drops out due to being one way, but we never hear about the advantages of that technology. Not surprising since it seems like racing is a small niche in FPV flying which is already a small niche itself. Love the videos Joshua, thank you for posting.
in reference to the connecting to VBAT instead of the 5v regulator. Were you able to run a 1s battery low and do some punchouts near the end of the pack to see if you would get a blackout? I remember playing with this on one of my HD / splitcam whoops where betafpv actually recommended switching from 5vpad to the vbat and it resolved the issue, but I still would grey out on occasion on those tiny 300mah batteries when I'd torture them down to 2.8v in a punchout, i'd still get a grey screen and have to just get lucky do a blind landing.
@@JoshuaBardwell oh sure. i just meant "Some people are going to prefer hdzero and some people would prefer this." without revealing your personal preferences. That being said, would love to see your comparison of a better HDZero camera (I liked Digisight v3 so far..) against this camera. Also the random HDZero latency jitter in it's Vrx modules (I don't know why or when it happens, but i swear it happens on almost every 2nd battery for me!) vs. the latency spikes in this system.
@@saidinesh5 even hdzero have the latest cams. The image itself is not as good sa walksnail. Just accept the facts. It is still analog image with just crispier image. That's all hdzero does.

I saw your video about hdzero and as it’s gonna work almost the same with hdmi input, are the attitude v6 a good deal ? Hdo’s, hdo 2’s etc. Thanks
Im not bardwell but skyzone 04x is the best oled goggles i recommend. WS vrx is best on oled goggles. You can wait for the hdzero goggles to be released though. So you can have analog-hdzero-caddx in one goggles
@@smoke2584 I’m just planning on using 720, that’s gonna be way enough. And the skyo4x has same resolution as hdo2’s, it’s more than 900p I believe so close to 1080.
In this video the Walksnail system is very low contrast/fuzzy even when it is getting near-perfect reception... Is there any option in the camera settings to make it more contrasty and perhaps increase the sharpness?
Un grand merci pour cette vidéo, ça manquer vraiment. Commentaire en français, car je suis nul en anglais et utilise le traducteur de google :). Merci merci beaucoup
You mentioned you weren't confident the AIO BEC could output the 2+ amps to run the vtx and cam. Did you actually measure the draw @5v? I can't seem to find that spec anywhere. It would be nice to know if it would run off an AIO BEC capable of 2 or 3amps. That opens up the possibility of a 1-2s or 2-6s build without adding an external BEC.
It maxes out at 7 watts so you can do the math. 7 watts / 5 volts = 1.4 amps. If the AIO BEC is rated for 2 amps I wouldn't do it. If it was rated for 3 amps and it was an honest rating, then it would work. I've just seen too many 5v regulators that brown out under load and don't make their rated output.
HDZero would really benefit from some additional error correction/smoothing, the breakup is incredibly annoying (and seizure-inducing), even more so than analog video.
One way link so it's hard to correct missed packets. I wonder if it could do similar to what ELRS is doing now, sending multiple packets. Maybe you'd get half the resolution but more resilience?
Awesome! And again Walksnail makes something people have been asking for! Again a piece of machinery made to meet the community needs... and it is compatible with other products. Great!
One difference between this and the regular vtx, that I think you forgot to mention, is that this 1s vtx only gets 1 antenna, while the other gets 2. I put this on my crux 3 1s elrs a while back. Took some massaging and a custom canopy, because the props are very close to the board in that frame, but it's very fun to zip around trees for 5 min or so.
Hey!! I have the 2s crux3. How hard was it to fit the WS whoop board? Also does the crux3 have a spare rx/tx pad I haven’t checked yet. I have a custom canopy not sure if that will work with it. I’m really only getting this for it so if it doesn’t work I’ll be PO lol
@@DivisionRc Hi. It is a bit of a weird setup that I ended up with. You can definitely make it work, it just won't be ideal. Main issue in my case was the tiny bit of clearance between props and electronics. the VTX is larger than the AIO. So my AIO board is where it was before, mounted to the carbon. On top of that I have a TPU custom canopy for the camera and the antenna. The camera mipi cable and the antenna wire go around the side of the AIO, down to the vtx that's mounted below the carbon. It's roated 45degrees relative to the AIO ( so the aio is corner-forward, the vtx is flat-side-forward), and the screws go through the little openings in the arms of the frame, sort of under motor wires. Technically they aren't screwed into anything, they just fit really snuggly, and with nuts on top, they can't go anywhere. On the bottom of the VTX I have a TPU piece for protection. The good thing about the vtx being below the AIO and frame is that the ELRS ceramic antenna is not sandwitched between the boards, as it would be if the vtx was on top. The bad thing is I need to unscrew the vtx to get to the AIO's USB port (that is below the AIO in my case). So better make sure you have your configuration done right before you put it together. There are other ways to do it, but it would require moving the motors up, down or out , or slightly smaller props, and I didn't want to deal with that. It could also be mounted on top of the AIO on spacers to move the vtx board just above the prop line, but I didn't want the quad to end up this tall. So.. my solution is fairly compact, but inconvenient if you need to work on it. I hardly ever have to plug this thing in, so it works for me. And yeah, the crux should have a spare tx/rx. At least mine does, I'm not sure if the 2s version has the same board. The 5v pad couldn't provide enough power for the vtx, though, so I powered it off of vbat. You can't do that with 2s, so make sure you have a 5v pad that can provide the power or you'll have to squeeze a separate regulator somewhere. I can take some pictures of the setup if you need. Let me know.
So soon I'm going to join your patrion and give you money to help me fix this drone I just cannot figure out. But first I need to buy parts to have on hand!
Hi. Can you help me please. I have skyzone 02c. does it make sense to buy this module? or because of the small resolution in glasses, the picture will not change much.
Cool to see comparison against HDZERO. The picture is so much clearer, BUT when you turn / move fast the HDZERO is so much smoother. Its like the Walksnail is running at 15fps - can see every frame move. Is it like that in the goggles? I have Walksnail on order so hope it isn't. Doesn't look like 60hz to me
Those are types of voltage regulators. Step down, step up, boost/buck, etc. All types of voltage regulator. Are you saying you think a "regulator" can only step down?
@@JoshuaBardwell I was referring the the part of the video (around 9:00) where you say “I’ll bet the regulator can supply 5v even after the battery drops below..” so I was referring to the context (of a whoop flight controller) given in the video. Not only can the regulator (on the whoop) not provide 5v when given 4.2, but these sort of regulators usually have a drop-off voltage, making them require a volt or so above the rated output voltage. Sorry, I never noticed you replied to this old comment - UA-cam auto-played this old video and I remembered commenting.

@@JoshuaBardwell also this is a 4:3 sensor and you're showing footage in 16x9 which doesn't look as sharp
Mr Bardwell - you should do some videos on modifying old tech. Lots of possibilities.
Love that your little video screen is called "Lilliput"
Joshua you should take a look at the Caddx VRX bundle -> I think this set will get a lot more pilots to test Walksnail!
Your not the only weirdo Bardwell, I too use whiTe for tx, also there is no uart 0, but ports can be 0
And … I ordered one. I fly a whoop everyday indoors during the winter. Now I’ll be doing it with digital.
🤣😂🤣 Go Goats Go! Had a great laugh watching Your goat. Merry Christmas Josh and Family. Blessing 👋🇨🇦
What is about output power, Joshua? Will it be lower at 3V and higher at 5?
That HDZero test with the dipole was quite impressive really. Would have been nice to see the same test with similar antenna that Walksnail had.
And same output
great review! I actually prefer the way the HDzero looks at the end... its more pixelated yes, but there is more detail in shadows etc because of lack of compression. Seems like it might be easier/ more reliable to fly proximity
You also need rx and tx for standby mode to work properly. If not you’ll be stuck on standby mode
You can just disable temperature protection and then standby mode is disabled.
@@JoshuaBardwell okay I’m sorry, wasn’t sure if you said that in the vid
Grey for grrrrrrrreat RX lol I thought I was being smart doing white for TX because of the T.
I pull out my 75mm at 3.2v. Hmmm . Gonna get some of that 1s Walksnail gear now. Nice review BTW.
Almost ready to pull the trigger on this.... got burned by dji not fully supporting their product.
Love tjoes goats ❤ nice clip defenetly i learn something today
It's was .1 volts off in the goggles so according to your power supply, the vtx shutdown at 3.0 volts.
I love this! But way out my pay grade :( the googles alone cost about 1/2 the how much i paid for my car.
Very impressive stuff. Joshua. That goat was like, “there’s a big A$$ ufo bee chasing me”! 😆👍
OMG! WOW! I haven't completed watching your video but I've got a question. What do you think the signal would be if we bring it far like a mile or like bandos?
jb's a slackliner? Nice
Good for indoor anything...not just quads !!
Great review. Do you have lag behind the barn?
1:40
Whoop: Dear diary ✍️... I can't describe✍️... that pain....✍️
awesome review as always JB
I think Walksnail should consider a vtx with an optional ELRS reciever.
Grate review as always did u see the fliy
The goats are too much!!
Would this work in a Darwin Baby Ape?
Impressive. I wish this had been out when I outfitted my 1s toothpicks with the HDzero whoop bundle.
Love the videos Joshua, thank you for posting.
not drone related.. but i want your scamp camper... that being said i now have to go spend more money on walksnail...
That image looks better than the full size transmitter.
in reference to the connecting to VBAT instead of the 5v regulator.
If it goes below 3.0 volts it'll black out for sure.
what's that white corded connected coming off the walksnail avatar hd mini 1s called?
Thanks .. --- was saving for hd0 . I woulda got stuck with the same thing as analog but for more money .
Am I going to have to rebuild all my Babytooths?
It's been fun watching Bardwell walk that tight rope trying not to upset all the HDZero fans in this one. Good review!
I only think about what is fair to the product. I don't decide what to say based on how people will react.
They are already upset😂
You radio is going nuts. Is that the telemetry lost notification? Please follow up on the baud rate thing for on your previous video. What is the appropriate baud rate? I get errors in almost every setting. Some more than others.
Hi bardwell ! Sorry to ask that here but I saw that walksnail is gonna make an avatar vRx. I’d like to know which analog goggles you’d recommend for that.
@@smoke2584 thanks for that ! I don’t mind about hdzero, I don’t really like the way it handles glitch etc. I’ll check sky04x then. 🤓✌🏼
@@baptiste_nonat 04x owner here, can confirm they’re excellent.
Additional note: WS vrx has 1080p. Current skyzone 04x just have 720p. You may not see the full potential of the vrx
@jbardwell any comments on the caddx pre-sale?
@@JoshuaBardwell Spec on the AIO I have handy for the first walksnail build says 2.5 amp BEC. So I guess we'll just have to try it to find out.
Would be awesome is they made something like a 200mw vtx properly designed and scaled down for a tiny whoop.
Im planing to build an fpv with walksnail....all flaith controler and esc are compatible with it?
my prayers are answered
Actually if you are using Softserial … the index bumper is 30.
An Info that is really hard to find.
Awesome! And again Walksnail makes something people have been asking for! Again a piece of machinery made to meet the community needs... and it is compatible with other products. Great!
I'm thinking about the vrx they are for sale now I just saw
Could you make a cam comparison video with that cam and the runcam Split 4 or Split Nano (digital vs. analog), please?
But first I need to buy parts to have on hand!
walksnail does not have radio receiver build in and reson why is smaller. Maybe DJI can do same
Heh, just ordered vrx with this vtx, what timing
yeahp, looks much more go-pro than hdzero, however that hdzero cam is pretty bad compared to others.
do i need an adapter to connect this to a rc car? probably obvious but im about as novice as they get for rc fpv
Doesn't look like 60hz to me
This is basically exactly what it looks like in the goggles. HDZero is smoother and consistent latency -- that's its strong point.
Be interesting to hear an update how you find it when you get it set up
Where on earth did you get the idea that a regulator can provide higher voltage than it receives? That would be a step-up or boost converter.
BIG Thumbs up !
