We used to have a German Shepherd who would guard my little sister and I when we were outside playing. Her commitment was put to the test on several occasions, when the neighbor's two dogs would come barreling into our yard looking for a fight. They were known to go after people and horses around their property, and sometimes they got loose. Our German Shepherd put herself firmly between us and the neighbor's dogs, stopping them in their tracks. She wasn't interested in attacking them, she had one mission: to protect us. Hey there! I’m a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant so I had to check this video out to observe his behavior (and because I’m that much of a behavior geek). I wanted to say THANK YOU for the bit around 13:50 where you mention that owners of suburban dogs get upset when dogs bark at night, when it really is what they have been bred to do. YES! Spot on! Dogs will alert bark because frankly, that’s one of the main reasons that humans decided to domesticate dogs’ ancestors in the first place! These guys have allowed us to survive as a species in a very unforgiving world- and being one of humans’ first early alarm systems most certainly contributed to our survival. So when your dog alert barks, they are doing their genetically-encoded job, and not being a little brat :) Anyways, loved watching this quite a bit: thank you for such a treat!
First and still the best. Alarm systems, I mean. ;) They are great deterrents for home invasions, too. I once heard that if a burglar hears a dog bark, they will pass up that house. Even small dogs will make enough noise to rouse their owners.
I have a dachshund in an apartment in the city but I always remind myself she may look like a lap dog but she was bred to kill creatures from rodents to badgers. Her bark is very sharp and grating but she's genetically disposed to do it. She's just trying to be a good dog. For a dachshund she's quite quiet but they'll never be silent dogs.
Not all dogs bark because something is wrong. We had a neighbor dog that barked nonstop all night. The owners didn't give a crap about it. The dog wanted in.

Livestock guardians are so unique. We have a female great pyrenees. We live in town and have no livestock but we DO have 4 little girls that she has definitely claimed as her, "flock". Blanche lived on a farm until she was 18 months old and her family sold the farm due to a divorce but I really think she would have failed as a full time livestock guardian eventually as she has quite a lot of non-breed typical anxiety and timidity. However, even our girl who's afraid of food dishes, cats, thunder, relocated furniture, and occasionally frozen peas turns into a pretty terrifying creature anytime anything makes her suspect that her girls may be at risk. She also has successfully mostly transitioned herself to being awake in the day and sleeping quietly pretty much all night as long as we make sure we have things set up in a way that she doesn't doubt the security of our home and family. That means she sleeps upstairs outside of our bedroom doors with the door at the top of the stairs closed to limit the area she feels she's protecting during that time and so she knows if anyone gets up, she'll be aware of it. We also never leave windows open at night as she apparently can't settle if the windows are open.
Love this! I also have a livestock guardian dog. She comes inside occasionally, but mostly she prefers to be outside. She also supervises birds and is incredibly gentle with them. During the day, she is such a big goofy floof, but at night, she's so serious, like Toby. We always have to announce our presence at night or she gives out this terrifying bark/growl because she thinks we may be intruders. As soon as she realizes it's us, she says hello and carries on patrolling. They are really amazing dogs.
i know only a few people appreciate this but this indeed is a result of good breading and then good training and its so heart warming to see how easily everything falls into place.
My GSD guards my house at night. He moves between 5 floors checking each room. Sometimes, I get a wet kiss from him which tells me he heard something outside. Usually deer eating from the apple tree next to the house. Vigilant.
@@josedaviddelevante9211 Technically 7, but the sub-sub basement and sub basement are a no go for him. So it's basement, lower living room, main floor, 2nd floor and 3rd floor.
It always confuses me how dogs don't seem to need consistent sleep. Like, I know Toby mostly rests during the day, but he still gets up and does various dog things. I can't even get out of bed with three alarm clocks blazing sometimes...
It's because humans have now a long and continuous sleep schedule, but it's believed that we tended to sleep in two times in the same day, less hours each one so we didnt feel so exhausted. I feel like I am better if I sleep less
thats because the way that most animals sleep is that they take naps throughout the day, and we're one of the only animals who actually sleep mostly at night
My Dad had 3 alarms. 1.) Bye the bed. 2.) one on the dresser in the bedroom, which he had to walk to turn off. 3.) one in the BATHROOM. If he got that far, he was up.
So glad to see Toby do his thing. Some people get dogs like these in a humid climate just to show off. It's also impressive how he's resistant to cold weather. Sending belly rubs for you Toby!!
Maybe some people do it to show off but I don't think too many people are like that. Flock gaurdians are great dogs like my great Pyrenees. We live in Northern California & they are popular out here & it gets warm in the summer. I work at & rescue & we don't keep the for long at all because they are so wonderful gentle giants as companions or work
Also hey Morgan, if you want a name for your Cayuga cross maybe name him Frost? I had a duck named frost who was my buddy but sadly was killed a while back. I’d love to see Vermont Frost!
When dogs find a smell they really like they roll in it to carry it with them. They seem to like wearing exotic "perfumes" like poop, dead fish, compost...
Man there's just such a stoic quality to the way Toby stands guard at night. I got my doberman as a Guard dog, seeing her stand to attention when someone's skulking about outside is the same thing. You just cant help feel a sense of pride in them. P.S. Hard to train and stubborn dog breeds are always more useful.
Reminds me of the Anatolian shepherd dog I used to own. She didn't guard any livestock but she had natural guard instincts. I live in a rough area and while walking her I had a few encounters with threatening guys, and she would always swap from friendly loving dog to "Attack mode" whenever she picked up bad vibes. She was quite an independent dog too, but loyal to all ends. Miss her a lot
The way you speak to your animals is exactly how my Indian dad spoke to his chickens and farm dogs. Continents away but poultry farming lingo remains the same 😂 Dad passed away a little while bsck and hearing you talking Toby boy and the quackquins is so nostalgic to me.
I know for a fact that the bark at night was "frightening and aggressive". I have PTSD and believe it or not I had an ironic little chuckle when I felt the goosebumps on my arms and the hair stand on the back of my neck. I picked up the aggression from the video alone. Fascinating.
He is so handsome, and so good at his job. He needs another dog to play with and be a co-guardian. Pablo doesn't want to play. So cute, him play bowing.
Get another one for him to team up with . It would be cool to watch him taking a pup on patrol with him at night . Dogs are happier in a pack . Great video
I had a feeling Pablo and Toby would end up getting along quite well. In the earlier videos, when Toby was a puppy, you could see some submissive behavior from him toward Pablo, and now that he's gotten older and has less puppy energy Pablo has really taken a shine to him. You did such a good job with Toby. Just watching the video I can tell what a well trained and amiable dog he is. No aggressive or assertive behavior toward his farm family; just calm and collected confidence. The birds are super comfortable with him and even Pablo is eating right out of Toby's bowl! What amazing work you've done with all of your animals!
I've got 4 dogs on my farm, they keep everything away until the cougar comes.. They tree or chase off raccoons, opossums, fox, coyotes, feral cats, weasels, and even owls and hawks on our unfenced, entirely free range, 40 acre farm. I've even seen the mutts pull a teenage black bear out of a tree last year. They are afraid of a cougar though, but hey, me too!! The cool thing is they have different barks that mean different things, learning the difference and tuning your body to wake at a specific bark or howl is important. Cougars are opportunistic and also like to stalk their prey but luckly it hasn't gotten my dogs, goats, pigs, cows, or very many fowl. I'm very proud of my farm dogs and I hope to get a couple Maremmas to add to our pack next year to help our 10 and 8 year old dogs out and give them much deserved rest. I really enjoy your video! Thank you!
Yes, just what I needed, seeing a Toby doing what a Toby does. You can tell he really loves his job, master (?), friend Pablo and the nanimals. Thanks, enjoyed!👍
I have a Pyrenean Mastiff and he bellows and cant stand being away from me. Hes over 160lbs really loyal dog! A gentle giant until he thinks there is a threat. I live in Maine I rescued him from Florida as i drove 27 hrs each way to get him. he was covered in hundreds of yeast sores had dreds and stunk so bad it was like he was rotting. Took shaving him multiple times and tons of antibiotics. Now he is healthy happy and loves his new home. He cries when I'm away from him I think he knows how much I did to save him and is afraid I'll leave him! Dogs are wonderful! I'm glad you found such a great dog!
I’ve been a petsitter for 13 years and my favorite breeds are the livestock guardian dogs. I’ve never had the pleasure of a Maremma, but I’ve sat for Komondors, Great Pyrenees, and Briards. Toby Dog looks like the bestest boy.

This was so cute. I like that there are not negative comments about him being an outside dog. He's got a job and gets plenty of attention and love. He's got his best friend kitty. He is living his best life :)
How much I enjoyed to watch Toby 🐶 being on his night shift He’s such a good mannered dog , who also guard “his” farm and the various other species of quakers . So nice to see he has befriended Pavlos . All in all I think you’re a very lucky person to have this great dog. 👍🏻 Toby is also lucky to live on the farm and being loved and cared for.. Great video, 😀
Cats can actually sense the electricity when your fence is tuned on. I never knew that until I actually observed it on my farm in person. Its pretty impressive
i have a collie x setter x husky x saluki boy he is insanely smart, can open doors and is fantastic round the farm but also seriously picky and having had labradors all my life who eat anything it's tough for me to get used to :)
Toby laying on his back.. That is so cute. Dogs usually lay like when they feel really content and safe on his surroundings. Toby is a wonderful dog. I thought he is a great pyrenese but I'm wrong. Him and Pablo eating together is so adorable. It's so good to see a day in his life.
I appreciate these videos so much! Lots of documentaries mention guard dogs and their roles but you are showing people the actual activity and attitude for your hound in its specific role. Well done to you sir for informing people especially about buying breeds and not being happy when they're barking overnight etc.
11:29 Love the way you used Sandberg's Etude no 1 for your panoramic time lapse shot. With the clouds blowing past and the movement of the animals, you get this eerie feeling of how finite life is against the backdrop of a seemingly eternal night sky.

its nice to see a breed that never rly was changed much to a lapdog can live up to its instincts and purpose. Working rly makes such breeds happy. Thats why i think most of them wouldnt make a good indoor pet or would be happy as a only family dog without work...
All this time i thought toby was a samoyed haha i just did some research about maremmas and they're absolutely gorgeous and super intelligent, now thats why toby is the perfect guard dog
That was a great video and I'd like to see more like that. I'm not a dog person but Toby makes me want one for my farm. I'm glad Pablo has warmed up to Toby and they get along so well. My daughter has an Akbash on her farm. They are very similar to Toby. Playful, calm, sweet, huge but when he gets riled or on guard he can intimidate you pretty quick.
I did not think I was a dog person either until I had to house keep my daughter's dog while she was away for a year. WE bonded.. and when that dog had to go back I cried and cried. It's all about the bond you have with an animal. It's not so much about if you are this or that sort of animal lover, it is about the bond.
Happy dog... Most dogs prefer being outside the vast majority of time. Terriers(going to ground), Herders, Protection Dogs, Draft Dogs(cart pullers), Hunting/Field/Pointers/Flushers/Retrievers(even Poodles are traditionally Water Retrievers), Hounds, etc.... Very, very few breeds are lap/home/companion animals...
I had a dog a half lab half something with a bit of husky and she loved the cats but the cats were terrified of her and very very wary. One cat finally got up the nerve to come around and found he lived to tell that noone ate him. Silly cats.... they think all dogs are brutes.
@@lindaterrell5535 The Poodle is a dog breed that comes in three basic varieties: Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle. The origin of the standard breed is still discussed, with a prominent dispute over whether the poodle descends from Germany as a type of water dog, or from the French Barbet..a water dog Retriever. The breed was not a dog of the common man. Nobility such as, Princes and Dukes favored them as evidenced by its role as a water retriever for hunting as depicted in art as well as found in historical documents.

That means she sleeps upstairs outside of our bedroom doors with the door at the top of the stairs closed to limit the area she feels she's protecting during that time and so she knows if anyone gets up, she'll be aware of it. We also never leave windows open at night as she apparently can't settle if the windows are open.

Pablo is a cat yes
Classic Tsundere
Are we saying Pablo is a Tsundere?
Toby is precious. ❤️ What a great dog.
That's awesome! My dogs want to live in a farm so bad.
same! my dog likes it outside more than inside
Seeing Toby’s tail wagging the whole time really makes me happy!
i know only a few people appreciate this but this indeed is a result of good breading and then good training and its so heart warming to see how easily everything falls into place.
I don't see any breads here
@@robinyumnam2646 he probably meant "breeding"
My GSD guards my house at night. He moves between 5 floors checking each room. Sometimes, I get a wet kiss from him which tells me he heard something outside. Usually deer eating from the apple tree next to the house. Vigilant.
@ludy I agree, my wife (and baby) and I sleep well knowing he is always watching. My baby is obsessed with him too.

Also add in the fact that our brain consumes a lot of extra energy, so yeah you get tired of thinking ;p
Same for me, sometimes I wonder how we used to survive in the wild.
My Dad had 3 alarms. 1.) Bye the bed.
2.) one on the dresser in the bedroom, which he had to walk to turn off.
3.) one in the BATHROOM. If he got that far, he was up.
This is what I want the rest of my life to be like. A beautiful home with a lot of land, with animals and gardens. Just truly living off the earth

I always love seeing dogs like toby outside living life like this. It's so nice to see them in the habitat they were born for.
I work at & rescue & we don't keep the for long at all because they are so wonderful gentle giants as companions or work
Toby: “BARK! WHO GOES THERE?!”
Morgan: “Hey buddy.”
Toby: “omgosh hooman hi dad hi dad.”

How are you doing today?
When dogs find a smell they really like they roll in it to carry it with them. They seem to like wearing exotic "perfumes" like poop, dead fish, compost...

@Noli's World Oof
A day in the life of Pablo next please!!! Or as much as you can, I have a feeling he’ll slip away for quiet time after a while lol
Pablo go pro lol I'd like to see him try it.
Continents away but poultry farming lingo remains the same 😂
Dad passed away a little while bsck and hearing you talking Toby boy and the quackquins is so nostalgic to me.
I know for a fact that the bark at night was "frightening and aggressive". I have PTSD and believe it or not I had an ironic little chuckle when I felt the goosebumps on my arms and the hair stand on the back of my neck. I picked up the aggression from the video alone. Fascinating.

So cool to see his demeanor change as he gets that game face on to protect everybody through the night, good boy!
Great video
This is especially true for LGS! They work amazingly well in pairs and it prevents Coyotes from luring them away and jumping them.
Did you just pitch Paw Patrol?

I love how happy and healthy Toby looks 🥺🥺 also the fact he stays so clean while being white is some witchcraft

I like how he is constantly wagging his tail
Thank you!
It's like that hound hunting. We run bear hounds and they'll bark and howl at deer and cats. But they don't take chase.
@Bruce Wayne it's harder then that unless there solo or small
The fact that the cat and dog share food in the same bowl is really nice :)
Toby will always be "Employee of the Month" until another Maremma competes for the title.

Well said!
I had a dog a half lab half something with a bit of husky and she loved the cats but the cats were terrified of her and very very wary. One cat finally got up the nerve to come around and found he lived to tell that noone ate him. Silly cats.... they think all dogs are brutes.
My border collie is happiest when she is laying in a hole that she dug herself, as long as it is on a hill so she can see everything.
Poodles are a hound.
@@lindaterrell5535
The Poodle is a dog breed that comes in three basic varieties: Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle.
