Yes, I noticed that too. It was probably because of the trauma she had with water and her attachment to Carlos combined, but also, we reincarnate as animals too. Maybe Natalia wasn't a Pinguin in her past life (maybe she was another animal) and water feels unfamiliar to her. Notice how she didn't want to eat fish, and was more comfortable walking over swimming.

It was heart warming how just she made that final decision on her own, waving goodbye and jumping into the water on her own, holding her nose and crossing her legs on the jump. And the way she instinctively started swimming for shore was reassuring too, especially since her friend swam off earlier. Great job. I can't wait for my 17-year-old to leave the nest next week, when he turns 18. He didn't just shove her off the boat, he gave her a gentle push. The ultimate goal of wildlife rehab/rescue is to return the animal to their natural habitat. These rescuers know what they're doing, they would not have released her if she wasn't ready. All we saw was a 7min video, we didn't see the whole process. And to be fair, we did see her diving into the big pool & eating fish on her own & interacting well with Rosalita, which means that in the wild she will be able to interact with the other penguins, she will see them hunting, and that, along with her instincts, will help guide her to hunt. Also, I garuantee these rescuers go back to the rookery to check on them.

Natalia's traumatic experience of being thrown into the water by well-meaning tourists reminds me of my childhood. As much as I can appreciate organizations like these who do what they can with limited resources and against all odds animals face in the wild I have to say chances are Natalia did not survive. She clearly wasn't ready, she wasn't just going to just find fish floating around waiting for her to eat them, she wasn't sure about the water so much so that seeing the other penguin in the water didn't even encourage her to follow in and do the same. She most likely panicked and tried to reach and stay on dry land again once she realized her humans were not coming back for her.

She might be ok. Animals aren't idiots and they have instincts. If you don't feed your dog or cat, they will go out and kill wildlife and eat it. In the case of cats, they still know how to hunt even if no one ever teaches them, and will hunt even when you feed them 3 times a day. Penguins live in colonys. They are quick to accept new members and the other penguins are right next to them, they have been released into a new family of penguins. They will learn from the other penquins how to survive because they have to. I wish they could have stayed with the humans though.

Indeed, the operative word is _“WAS.”_ She _WAS_ the cutest bird, because there’s no way in hell she survived with what we just witnessed with releasing her into the wild well before she was fully rehabilitated. If she was ready, she would have jumped into the ocean without the slightest hesitation.
They failed on doing so many things to fully prepare her for living in the wild. My heart is broken for this darling bird. I can’t even believe that he pushed her into the strong ocean current for her release when knowing full well that she developed her fear of water because of humans pushing her into the ocean over and over when she wasn’t even ready to swim yet (baby penguins don’t know how to swim for some time after they are born).
All she had was a shallow kiddie pool in her rehabilitation (even their largest pool was very shallow and no currents in it) - it was _NOTHING_ like the ocean. They didn’t teach her how to hunt live fish, nor teach her how to get up onto steep cliffs, etc etc. etc!
This was the most depressing Dodo video I’ve ever viewed, and it actually made me quite angry. Carlos even lied when saying that Natalia made the decision herself to go into the ocean. Just, WTF?!

It seems like there was a massive step missed, in living in a large pool environment, with rocks etc for her to become more adjusted without any help, before she was released. Going straight into a deep, tidal area with high rocks etc, seemed unfair. Well done on how they brought her on, but I can only hope she managed to get ashore and not drown from exhaustation in that initial release.

I think a lot of people understand animals feel fear and stuff, but I don’t think enough people understand that these fearful situations are just as traumatic for them as they would be for us. For example, my dog was abused by his former “caretakers,” now, 13 years later, he still runs away when people move too fast around him or are holding something large (especially newspaper and pans) even though he hasn’t been hit in 13 years. I wish more people would stop and think about that before they do stuff to animals, especially if it’s just for a stupid penguin photo.

I see your point, she might be better off in a zoo program/sanctuary, but they have to give her a chance to be in the wild. I seriously doubt they're not gonna go back to check on her & all the penguins. And I garuantee they stuck around to watch her from a distance to make sure she was heading towards the rookery after release. If she was injured or unable to overcome her fear of water then I'm sure they would have worked with her for longer or decided to keep her in a sanctuary. Penguin sanctuaries are not easy things to maintain, and it's almost always best to reintroduce an animal to its natural habitat if possible.

I thought she had some injury and was brought to the center for rehabilitation. Perhaps the injury caused discomfort, especially making swimming difficult or inefficient. So she was weary of being in water.

@@G.DD3SS I'm no expert either, but I have studied animal biology, especially birds, in my spare time for pretty much my entire life, that being said, I am still no expert. There's a new video on Clint's Reptiles channel about the Gentoo Penguins that are kept at a zoo in Utah, we learn about how insanely difficult it is to keep penguins in captivity, especially when the penguins are far away from their natural home, like arctic penguins being kept in Utah. Obviously it would be easier to keep them in captivity in their natural setting, but that's not always feasible, which is why (certain) zoos & sanctuaries go through great lengths to keep penguins happy & healthy in captivity. From what I understand, the main goal of animal rehabilitators is to help the animal heal and then return them to the wild. Sometimes it's not possible to return every animal to the wild, but they try their best to limit hands on interactions with them to help keep them as wild as possible, which is most likely why you saw them using boards to help herd the penguins around in this video, b/c it makes the penguins exercise & move on their own without being overly handled by the care takers. Any good rescue facility will function with the primary goal of rehabilitating the animals to return them to their natural home, which is what I saw the people in this video doing. No red flags or alarm bells went ringing in my mind while watching this, yes it was silly & badly timed wording of them saying it was the penguin's choice to jump off the boat while we see him place her in the water, but that was just bad video editing, not animal abuse. I've watched many releases where the animal needs a little extra boost to get going back into the wild, it's very normal. Btw, I'm not writing this long comment to show off or attack you, I just want to share knowledge and hopefully make you feel better about the plight of this beautiful little penguin.

I am not satisfied with this. You’re partner threw Rosita in and I don’t think she was ready. And you gave her a strong push, and she needed time to realize she was free. Also, you should’ve kept them longer because one tiny pool is no match for a huge body of water with strong currents. Also, if they’re endangered, you should’ve kept them in a highly protected place.

They shld NOT hv PUSHED Natalia in, instead perhaps lower her down closer to the water & see how she responds before letting her go! From what was shown, I don't think she was ready and moreso believe she was a candidate for a zoo or ?? bc of her fears! Also, how do they know if she can fly out of the ocean and up onto those rocks like she NEEDS to b able to do? I pray she does know or learns in a hurry B4 danger approaches and she becomes an easy mea or simply drowns bc she could not get out and becomes exhausted!!! I'm quite disappoints in this Mutual Of Omaha's video! Are you REALLY saving the lives of endangered penguins? I don't want to come across as someone that seeks to argue, so I'm carefully putting it this way: animals do express their fears, albeit just not verbally. Communication is so much more than language, and I wish more would see that. It's good for the human psyche do leave itself sometimes, and enter the minds of animals for a moment. All animals speak, and that's awesome.

@Gandalf Yes, you put it very nicely. What I have tried to say originally was that humans have the ability to speak out, thus making our concerns to be heard much quicker. But of course there're other ways of communication. Same can apply to little babies who are unable to communicate verbally yet their parents usually know what needs to be done to calm them down.
