Apple will not. Sony and LG are irrelevant even when they make a good phone now and then. Xiaomi has so many models its tough to keep track. You review makes me think if i should change my pre order to silver instead of Black.
Pixel 5 still takes a better photo and more consistent for half the price imo. You really got to like zoom if you want the S21 Ultra
My Note 3 has served me well for over 7 years, but I'm definitely excited to finally be upgrading to this incredible machine.

IMO, if it came that close in this pre-release software, then any camera-oriented update will definitely make it the same or even exceed at times as compared to 12 Pro Max. And that's the bottom line I have got from almost all the camera comparisons videos dropped today, with most of them saying it takes better photos than 12 Pro, but the latter beats S21U in the video game.. Good job Samsung..!! You're finally back..!!

I don't have brand loyalty but I prefer Samsung to the different phones that I used. I have been upgrading every 2 years since the S4 cuz it used to take Samsung 2 years to come out with the next big update. Every year used to be a small update to the previous year.
This year is the first time I am not really enthusiastic about the phone.
I currently own the S10+. Besides the 120hz refresh rate that I've used on other phones and see that I can live without, I don't see a real reason to upgrade. I personally don't like the design. I prefered the Note 10's design and prism white color.
I don't see the fold getting cheaper for at least 1 or 2 years, and the Note might not happen this year.
Any thoughts?

LOL! I guess that's a pretty accurate statement these days. Most reviews talk about the camera for half the video.
@@anthonyt425 What else should they talk about? Every phone is practically the same these days. For me thought, they should talk more about haptics. Although at this point, if it's not mentioned in a flagship phone review I just assume it is great.
@@aldelmontealdm just making an observation, nothing deep. Personally, I believe most Flagship phones at least can be summed up in less than 10 minutes.
It's not a Verge video without mentioning/bringing up the iPhone.
Any review that doesn't do that comparison isn't doing their job right. They are direct competitors and comparisons are there and inevitable. It's fine, it's necessary and it's no big deal. I want the camera comparisons even if most people have chosen their side and aren't cross-shopping these phones. I have a toe in both waters so I enjoy the contrasts.
@@magicman322 check out Unbox Therapy for a blind camera test. It's fascinating. My issue with the Verge is that they always have been an iPhone fan club. Comparisons are warranted, but in comparison videos, not in review videos. I have been following them for years now and they used to be worse. There was this joke that they can't make a video without mentioning the iPhone.
I ordered this last week. Mainly for the camera as I do photography. Looking forward to getting it. Coming from the huawei I loved this phone also. Camera is great.

I have an s10+ and it's still working pretty well, could you genuinely recommend that I get the s21 ultra as an upgrade or should I stick with my s10+?

S10+ still good tho, the reason u need to upgrade i think it's refresh heartz. Well i have s20+ but i keep it on 60hz for battery life, so yeah, i think no reason to upgrade imo.
Oh i forgot, s21 ultra has adaptive refresh heartz, not like mine.
Try a 120 Hz and you'll see the difference, believe me

Dieter, thx for the review. Only wish you had mentioned something, anything, about the sound quality. Well balanced or not between the earpiece and bottom-firing speaker? Deep, rich, or simply loud and tinny? Something, anything...
Long story short I cracked the screen on my s20 plus(silver,128gb), called Verizon/Warranty they did not have my variation of s20 plus so I got to upgrade to the s21 ultra for the $200 deductible(I had to pay either way). A solid win!! 👌
Use it for like an year and THEN tell me if there is any lag.
Note 10 Lite (my friends) already lagging so much. Dropping frames and stuttering.

RCS - Samsung messages can now do RCS with Google Messages. They only thing it can't do at the moment is secure messages.
What do you mean you like the "new" square design from iphone? That is the same design as the 5/5s

Even though most will use a form of protection on there phones be it skins, or cases. I wish Samsung would really give us more choices for colors on the ultra phones. I am tired of Black in whatever form, limiting your choice from a few to only one if you want a the most the phone can offer is just sad in this day and age. I do love watching your reviews!

I wish I knew if it has the Samsung Translation bugs that happen with Speech to text like my S7 does (I say Comma, it either spells out comma or prints "oh," Or if I say he, it'll print she, him or some random identifier). Or have they taught the S21 Ultra proper English grammar?

The same here, I agree with you. You know what if you ask them what's complicated they can't pick one. It is the most simpler and customizable phone for every one. He said quote "too many options" what's wrong with having too many options?

actually we should all wait for the first big update for video and cpu optimizations and ofcourse everyone should wait for one plus 9 pro to get released and mi 11 pro etc. one thing for sure. the 1080p monitor on s21, s21+ killed them for the non average.

You can't have it both ways. Last year we complained the price was too damn high, this year every phone is 200 bucks cheaper and we're complaining the non ultra models lost easy to lose stuff.

I was confused by the comments until I got to the relevant point in the video. Bad form to make it seem like an uninstallable weather app with an ad on it equates to ads in the UI.
IMO, that should probably be cleaned up, or at the very least explained, because as you can tell from the comments it sends the wrong message to uninformed people mistaking this for a Xiaomi phone.

Zoom is an absolute Samsung blowout, just as software blur "portrait" shots are an iPhone blow out.
The hardware and how they are implemented make these two things hard facts.
@@leonfrancis3418 Contrasty detail yes samsung wins, but iphone captures subtle patterns, see 11:01. you notice detail in the tile better. this is because the iphone does better hdr and combines them better. this is classic of android phones too. i had huawei p30 pro and it's 40 MP camera captured less detail in situations that had complex detail than iphone 11 pro, like the grand canyon mixture of patterns of rocks and green cliff plants.
Last time i was this early Dieter still reviewing Samsung S3
was SO close pulling the trigger on this one... but the BUILT-IN ADS on a $1K device totally killed it for me. The bloatware does it again!

I really appreciate you touching on some of the features. Many reviewers mainly skip that when talking about samsung phones because of laziness. There's SO MUCH that Galaxy phones can do. I agree that it can overwhelm, though.

I said many times and am saying it now: it is sad that Dieter is biased against Samsung. I am writing this from a 12 Pro Max.
I would love universal RCS on Samsung Messages, but outside of that, it's still much better than Android Messages. The ability to pin contacts to the top, categorize contacts and threads across the top, send text messages directly to Reminders, etc. It's just a better communication & productivity tool than Android Messages.
I hope Samsung will bring back the SD card in the galaxy S22, next year, especially if your gonna be shooting 8k and 4k...
Samsung had the android phone crown since the Galaxy S3. The comeup started with the S2/Note around late 2010/11. I think motorola and HTC had the crown with the Droid phones and the Evo. Samsung was able to get a similar phone on every carrier starting with the original Galaxy S. Marketing played a big factor in their dominance also.
Dieter has to be one of the best reviewer in the market, cheers! Finally Samsung flagship is back and 2021 is gonna be a challenging years for remaining smartphone makers but competition always benefits end consumers like us and more than happy to see that happening!

This phone is honestly so impressive that I might finally switch from my pixel 2 xl to a phone with a holepunch camera. If only there wasn't this whole "pixel 6 might have a hidden selfie cam" I would have probably ordered it by now I would probably order it.
Google quit the high spec game and went for a "functional" approach, so no point waiting for them if you do like high end phones.
@@xmaverickhunterkx I think it's too early to say that google quit the high spec game based on one year's release of phones. They could just as well have decided to spend another year on R&D for a new "high end" phone and put out the pixel 5 in the meantime. But then again I am a dreamer. We'll see what happens.
@@weardo100 I doubt it. In fact, the Pixel line went for specs to replace the Nexus line, so thinking of that, Google seems to have gone back to that strategy.
More importantly, we have pretty good mid range SoCs, unlike years prior and on top of everything... Google is a software/services company, not a hardware company.

Love the prism effect of silver not dramatic as note 10+ but definitely prefer over dull black. Wish they would have given more options for carrier models as I liked the brown unlocked phone even more.
I feel many feel the need to choose phantom black as samsung tried to make it look cool with amount of time they spend gloating and some reviewers.
Definitely Samsung Galaxy are super computers on hand n S21 is the super computer on hand for common man!
I have been with the NOTE 8 for 3 plus years n still it is super efficient n love it!

Worth mentioning, Samsung for portrait mode uses the main wide lens and iPhone uses the telephoto. Makes them look very different
Just got mine today. Love it. Fixes all the problems with my s20 ultra.
How does it feel in the pocket/hand? Huge and heavy or a good balance. All subjective I know but still 😊
It's a heavy phone but you get used to it. It's narrower than the IPhone 12 pro so feels way better in the hand.

Went from an excellent phone with the S10+, got the S21 Ultra which more than excellent, it the cream of the crop.

I look forward to more detailed camera comparisons, but among the shots shared in this vid... the S21 Ultra shots looked noticeably better across the board imo. I agree that it probably comes down to a matter of preference on some of the shots though, particularly with the difference in color warmth.
Still, I do wonder if The Verge wouldn't benefit from having a better variety of reviewers, or someone more neutrally biased. Dieter seems pretty strongly biased toward the Apple camp.
While my experience with the iPhone 12 Pro Max has been limited to approx 2 weeks of use... The out of the box experience with the Galaxy S20 Ultra (and assumedly the S21 Ultra) is pretty easily on par w/ iOS imo, even if you do NOT know all of the deeper tricks & features (although I do agree w/ the RCS mess on Samsung devices in the U.S.). Comparisons to iMessage aside, almost feels like he goes out of his way to ding the S21 for having more features & capabilities available to those willing to dig in :-?...
