EVERYONE plays their part FLAWLESSLY in this film. Tarantino may be rough around the edges, but his writing is brilliant. Foxx plays the vengeful bad ass freed slave to a T. Waltz plays the suave bounty hunter with balls of steel sharply. DiCaprio plays the sociopathic slaver beautifully. Jackson plays the sadistic, envious house slave and steals the show.

It's the fact he tied it into the part, dipstick. He played it off, at first wipes it with a handkerchief that was on set, and he then later smears his very real blood across the face of his co actress to sell the scene. Masterful improv, and he turned what could have been a delayed scene into a perfect work of art.
While he certainly took the lead, every actor in that room maintained character and stuck to the script even though there was a legitimate reason to stop doing so. Like he was hurt really bad there. But they all went with it. Team effort there.

Hate to say it, but yeah, she was the weakest link in the movie. Its jot her fualt though, she was alongside utter GIANTS like Samuel L Jackson, Leo, Jamie Foxx and (im blanking on his name, he was Col Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds).
DiCaprio is great in this scene, but I really love Jackson's mannerisms as well; the way he moves and his facial expressions to seem like a bumbling, subservient fool. Stephen was really committed to his act, and Jackson portrays that beautifully.

What makes this movie so great is how the actors managed to play so damn well despite the stigma. They were basically putting themselves on display as not just "fantasy murderers/rapists", but historically relevant evil personalities with which people hold very, very strong opinions. The fact they managed to play it through this flawlessly just speaks of great filmography.
What makes Leo Dicaprio different from all the rest is that despite his well known movie prescence and worldwide popularity he still manages to do an evil role so well, it makes you enraged at his character, like you want to reach into the screen and kill him with your bare hands. And THAT is why Leo deserves an Oscar. Because if you can play a role like this despite being known worldwide in several different movies, and STILL make people angry and absolutely HATE you on screen, you DESERVE that damn Oscar. There was an interview were Leo said first 2 days of recording he messed up most of the lines, he said he was nervous and way uncomfortable saying some of the lines that they were the most frightening and scary and rude, he said Jamie confronted him, they sat down and had a heart to heart, they re-recorded and Leo never messed up again, his confidence was soaring.

I like how everyone slightly jumped when Candie/Leo smashed his hand on that glass! Improvisation is so awesome in films as in this scene, for instance, Candie slamming the table (and glass) kind of inflicts vulnerability on part of Schultz and Django, and therefore more dominance for Candie and his capable killing instincts as a villain.

McConaughey was fantastic, but (among other reasons) he was often overshadowed by Leto's more memorable character. And I don't believe Tommy Lee Jones should have won in 1994. I think Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List) was the best, then Leo came second with What's Eating Gilbert Grape. So, yeah. The Academy definitely has had their screw ups in not choosing the best. During this scene he accidentally cut his hand when he brought it down on the glass cup and decided on with the show. Now *that's* dedication. Apparently when this scene was done he got a round of applause. And he fucking deserved it too. I actually like Leonardo DiCapro now more then in his early days. His early film career was pathetic, dewey eyed romantic bullshit but since then he's come along on his own as quite a gifted actor. He's probably one of the best modern actors in this day and age. Christoph Waltz is an amazing actor and I don't doubt his abilities at all......but Leonardo DiCaprio should have won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role instead of Waltz. This scene just solidifies how great of actor he is.

EVERYONE plays their part FLAWLESSLY in this film. Tarantino may be rough around the edges, but his writing is brilliant. Foxx plays the vengeful bad ass freed slave to a T. Waltz plays the suave bounty hunter with balls of steel sharply. DiCaprio plays the sociopathic slaver beautifully. Jackson plays the sadistic, envious house slave and steals the show.

Leo, Waltz, and Jackson were all awesome. Foxx was like he is in all his movies, completely numb and devoid of any personality.

You can see DiCaprio checking his hand at 0:26 while swiftly assessing the situation. After a pause of reflection he asks "Where were we?" which fits the context of the scene, but also seems like DiCaprio is literally asking the question, as if he just came back to the scene.

It's the fact he tied it into the part, dipstick. He played it off, at first wipes it with a handkerchief that was on set, and he then later smears his very real blood across the face of his co actress to sell the scene. Masterful improv, and he turned what could have been a delayed scene into a perfect work of art.
While he certainly took the lead, every actor in that room maintained character and stuck to the script even though there was a legitimate reason to stop doing so. Like he was hurt really bad there. But they all went with it. Team effort there.

Hate to say it, but yeah, she was the weakest link in the movie. Its jot her fualt though, she was alongside utter GIANTS like Samuel L Jackson, Leo, Jamie Foxx and (im blanking on his name, he was Col Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds).
DiCaprio is great in this scene, but I really love Jackson's mannerisms as well; the way he moves and his facial expressions to seem like a bumbling, subservient fool. Stephen was really committed to his act, and Jackson portrays that beautifully.

What makes this movie so great is how the actors managed to play so damn well despite the stigma. They were basically putting themselves on display as not just "fantasy murderers/rapists", but historically relevant evil personalities with which people hold very, very strong opinions. The fact they managed to play it through this flawlessly just speaks of great filmography.

There was an interview were Leo said first 2 days of recording he messed up most of the lines, he said he was nervous and way uncomfortable saying some of the lines that they were the most frightening and scary and rude, he said Jamie confronted him, they sat down and had a heart to heart, they re-recorded and Leo never messed up again, his confidence was soaring.
Samuel and Leo should have had a couple of Oscars for their performances. In fact the entire group of fabulous actors should have had a Tsunami of Oscars. Brilliant through and through all of them.

Improvisation is so awesome in films as in this scene, for instance, Candie slamming the table (and glass) kind of inflicts vulnerability on part of Schultz and Django, and therefore more dominance for Candie and his capable killing instincts as a villain.

+Tom Helms While that is true for a couple of nominations, I do believe he should have gotten an Oscar for The Wolf of Wall Street. For me, he gave the best performance out of that year's nominees. McConaughey was fantastic, but (among other reasons) he was often overshadowed by Leto's more memorable character. And I don't believe Tommy Lee Jones should have won in 1994. I think Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List) was the best, then Leo came second with What's Eating Gilbert Grape. So, yeah. The Academy definitely has had their screw ups in not choosing the best. At least in my opinion. :)

The way Leo said “turtle shell tabletop” made me shiver.
This scene was probably one of Leonardo Dicaprio's best scenes ever. The blood on his hand was actually real. During this scene he accidentally cut his hand when he brought it down on the glass cup and decided on with the show. Now *that's* dedication. Apparently when this scene was done he got a round of applause. And he fucking deserved it too.
I actually like Leonardo DiCapro now more then in his early days. His early film career was pathetic, dewey eyed romantic bullshit but since then he's come along on his own as quite a gifted actor.
He's probably one of the best modern actors in this day and age. He'll be remembered in history as such as a modern day Humphrey Bogart or whatever. Bravo.
Amazing, amazing scene. One of the best in cinema history. All the actors were great but DiCaprio was incredible. As other posts here have commented he really did cut his hand in the scene, that's his real blood. How did he manage to play both Jack in Titanic and this disgusting psychopath...
How is there so much criticism of Leo's role in this comment section? It was amazing, the intensity was brilliant, and he managed to continue after sustaining a wound that required stitches?

Christoph Waltz is an amazing actor and I don't doubt his abilities at all......but Leonardo DiCaprio should have won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role instead of Waltz. This scene just solidifies how great of actor he is.

This is one of the most tense explosive scenes I have ever seen in film.
And Leo did it with a cut hand. I can't imagine what Kerry was thinking when he smeared his blood on her face. That is some crazy shit. Unbelievable acting here.
