BDO is a fantastic game. Its a damned shame they don't have boss battles or group dungeon type things that are anything but a Zerg-fest.
If they'd managed to balance the game for group-based content, making it a bit more team oriented, I genuinely think that BDO would be the best MMO of all time.
Its still awesome, but I just burn out on it too fast. The amazing combat system only holds my attention for so long before I need something else.
Still, I've played it since release, off and on, and can genuinely say that, for the $5-$10 it will cost to give it a try on Steam, its totally worth it!

BDO is a really unique experience.
I played this game for a year and it is still one of the most exciting MMOs I have ever played.
Life skill part of the game is especially amazing. You can create a network of farms, production facilities and warehouses. Hire workers, make them produce trade goods, load them into a wagon and do trading runs to make a profit.
You can build ships, train horses, refine materials and do a bunch of other things to participate in the economy.
And Guild vs Guild PvP is something else. You fight against other guilds for territories on the world map. The winning guild gets a cut from all transactions made on that part of the map. So guild fights do have a lot of incentives.
Sadly, to stay competitive in BDO, you have to treat it as a part-time job. After a while it can get overwhelming. I probably won't play BDO again, but I encourage everyone to at least play it once.

    • @Therapyxx

You can go to arena of solare or just pvping with premium characters or pvping vs your guild mates with same gear lvl.
So there are a lot of possibilities to stay competitive. The issue is not in the gear, but skill. BDO requires really a lot of practice compared to other mmos.

a part time job to play BDO? well if you plan your activities efficiently in-game, I don't think that would be the case bro. As you can see I am just playing 2-4 hour per WEEK and yet I achieved a 721 gearscore and a decent lifeskill gear. it's how you deal with that active time like for instance earn silver or gain something out of it that matters. But it boils down to how efficient you are in achieving those things.

I've been playing BDO off and on since 2016 when it released.
I've already come to terms with the fact that I will forever be in a "catch-up" phase in terms of trying to gear my main character to be on-par with those that never took a break from the game.
So for anyone looking to get into this game, I have a small bit of advice for you:
Black Desert Online is NOT a sprint, but instead a marathon. Treat it as such, and you will enjoy it for a long time, and do your best not to get burnt out from the RNG mechanics of the game.

@@SirMitsuruji5 You cannot change the entire concept about the game but I can let you know some of the key factors MitchManix forgot.
      - Universal silver (If one character has the silver it is now across all of them, while still having the warehouse as a 2nd deposit station)
      - Guranteed PEN paths (1 PEN accessory and you can make all armor pieces PEN by following a specific questline which requires decent amount of activity and silver but it is guranteed)
      - Agris can be consumed while being a lifeskiller now.
      - Spots got EXTREMELY buffed in terms of silver gain per hour which makes it WAY LESS of a grind which it used to be in 2018 when I started the game.
      - Group content such as dungeons are now a thing and VERY rewarding.
      - Season goes so much faster now with higher enhancement rates along with that season materials is way way easier to get now.
      - Prob many more things but since I am 700+ gearscore I focus more on other things such as getting 90B silver for my next upgrade :kekw:

Really awesome review! Glad to see someone took the time to really try the game about before they based their assumptions on stuff from 2017. There's just a couple things I'd like to mention since it seems like you haven't discovered them quite yet.
They have added several dungeons that can be run weekly. There is currently 3 available with another on the way, they can be done as a solo player or a 5 man group. They are basically what'd you'd expect: fighting some mobs, doing some puzzles, and ultimately several mini-boss fights leading up to the final dungeon boss. The puzzles are kind of similar to what you may have seen in the Magnus questline.
There is also gear-balanced 3v3 PvP called Arena of Solare. You use your own character, so maxed out skills and account-wide bonuses still come into play... but you choose your gear independently from the rest of the game so that everyone is on a relatively even playing field. There's an MMR system, in-game voice chat, and a "coin" system that allows you to continue playing to unlock more options for your character's gear build (aka if you wanted to go for a more tanky setup etc). As with any PvP game however, it's quite possible to run into some sweaty frustrated gamers who are not keen on having a new player on their team, but I've met some really cool people as well. Another PvP feature I'll mention is that you can create a "trial character" on the main menu, that allows you to try out a different class in the Red Battlefield mode who is already leveled and (relatively) geared up.
They have also recently added systems into the game so you can "enhance" your gear without using RNG, just by doing daily/weekly quest and farming up enough resources to progress to the next stage. There's also many people in the game who enjoy "grinding" mobs in different parts of the world to just buy all their (already-enhanced) gear from other players.
Glad you enjoyed the game! If you're interested in continuing your adventure, there are discord servers for each individual class in the game that have a wealth of information on combos, skill addons, optimal gearing, pvp tips, etc. The BDO reddit is pretty good for general questions also, but your best bet is to find a friendly guild through the games server chat and find some friends to play with and answer any questions you might have. Thanks for the video!

I've been playing BDO since 2014, in fact I saw the beta in 2012 and waited 2 years to play. What keeps me playing are two things, combat and... outfits. 😆 I also really like the character customization. I do a lot of life skilling too. Hunting is one of the unique life skills which requires using a matchlock to shoot creatures. It's also used during one of the world boss fights, Offin. Bartering is another unique life skill which utilizes a giant ship to sail around to different islands, but the ships you can build take a lot of time and resources. Having a fast ship is also needed to hunt Blue Whales, which is a party based hunting activity (one person steers the boat to chase the whale, the others shoot the whale).
Also, I didn't see it here but there's also Season characters which makes it very easy for new players to level up and gear up.
Another aspect of the game is "Tagging" where you link two characters together, copying gear from one character to another (optional), and allowing you to quickly swap to the other character (with some restrictions). However this does cost quite a bit of silver depending on your gear quality. I use this often as I like to play different class combat styles now and then, while grinding for silver or for ultra rare drops like map pieces for Archaeologist Map or the Compass.
Edit: I forgot to mention you also get a very cute fairy which gains various skills depending on which tier fairy you get. Each one has their own (voice) personality, which also determines the light they emit (orange, pink, yellow, blue, green). Its best skill is using potions automatically to recover your HP/MP/WP/SP. As well as use other items automatically like food, potion, scroll buffs.

First time seeing this video/your channel, and it's great! You sound like a voice actor and I can tell you put quite a lot of effort into this, so kudos to you MitchManix, your work is appreciated.
In my experience, the game is still great after playing for a few years, only because - as someone in the comments said - I play it at my own pace. You're not forced to rush, there are bunch of categories of players who you can grow with once you find a community/guild that you can have fun with.
Pay to win is not necessary - there are bunch of items sitting in storages that are provided from events, which normally you can buy with real money - you make much more money by simply playing the game compared to how much you can get by purchasing stuff with real money to sell them back for ingame currency.
Enhancing is not mandatory, you're free to choose if you want to lifeskill/grind for gear or enhance it - or both.
PvP feels great, it has its unbalancing but a lot of other games do - it can feel fun either way.
Progression feels fast at the beginning and slow at later game, which is why it is most recommended to take your time and try to enjoy the game - not compete with others, because there will always be that type of player who plays since release and it is a bad idea to compare yourself with them in terms of skill/progression/gear worth - you can still get there tho, but gotta be patient. However, you can relatively easy reach a certain point in game where you can kill in almost every PVE area, and some PVP content is capped (even if you have high gear, it'll be reduced to a lower stats, so it can be as fair as possible for everyone).
They can definitely work on the story and cinematics. Story can be boring for some. If you like reading books in general, you might enjoy the NPC dialogues, but if you're expecting to have cool cinematics and other elements to keep you attracted to the story, you might find the story in game boring because it doesn't have many elements like those mentioned. And let's be honest, people skip the story in most games just to rush for rewards, even if the story is good. If you want to know what's up in there you just read and enjoy.
Probably there are more aspects worth mentioning but that's all I got in mind at the moment. Cool video you made there!

Great video 👏But there's some important stuff regarding mainly the PvP experience, while yes, to enjoy full fledged endgame PvP it's gonna take you hundreds of hours. There's some stuff you didn't seem to notice.
In character creation there's a second tab for Premium characters, those are like test PvP characters, they already begin at lv60 with enough skill points for all the skills, and midgame gear. The catch is you only can use them inside the arenas or Red Battlefield. Also the most played PvP mode which is Arena of Solare is totally capped and balanced and you can't use your normal gear there, which is great cause most players will have way more gear than you at the start.
And finally, nowadays there's multiple new systems to avoid the RNG enhancing, there's the central market where you can grind and just outright buy your gear from other players without the need for enhancing. There's the season servers and gear, which if you complete once will already leave you at midgame spots and it's absolutely easy to reach if you know what you're doing.
Sadly the worst part about BDO is the need for guides and information not available or not easily found inside the game. So if you're really interested in playing and getting to endgame your best bet is watching some beginner's guides, watch Choice's 700GS in 110 days in which he starts a new account and goes for the top 5% Gear Score, he just finished and took him 55 days and 60$ spent which he only used half of it basically. Finally, join a new player friendly guild and learn from them that's the way I learned to play the game.
I know it's a bit overwhelming but BDO is really my favorite MMO and it can be wonderful if you get to go just a tiny bit deeper into it.

I first started playing BDO 3 years ago and for about half a year I had such an immense blast with it. I remember first time I logged in and turned on the highest graphics just leaving me in complete awe! The whole process of getting to level 60 and learning about all the systems was so refreshing, but sadly eventually I felt so daunted when I wanted to grind at my favourite spot to make some cash and I was obliterated by simply much better players. - My friend who initially introduced me told me that you have a daily timelimit now to go to another non pvp realm and grind without that fear which does seem insanely nice for just that aspect of my personal issues with it, but the most daunting thing would probably be the exponentially punidhing upgrade system.
Suffice to say this is the first video that truly reminded me why I fell in love with the game like I did and even got me that itchy feeling of "should I give it a go?" - Really good job on the review man, it was definitely on point with both pros and cons.

I play BDO for 2-3 years back when it was still considered new. The game is not worth it, it becomes a job.
The game is choked full of hindrances that only exist to force you to spend money.
There is a weight limit, and space limit for every individual character and you need to spend around *80$* per character if you want to be able to carry heavy loot.
Speaking of loot, it doesn't go automatically to your inventory, you need to pick the loot off the ground, individually. *Unless* you pay around *100$* minimum to get 5 pets that will pick up the loot for you but they have a cooldown, unless you keep paying around 100$ per pet(u can have 5 of them) to upgrade then to Tier 4 where the cooldown is half a sec.
*Finally the Upgrade.* It works like this, Imagine you want the brand new iPhone to upgrade your old model.
You buy another model identical to yours, put then on the floor, and smash it with a 25-pound hammer. If you are lucky, after attempting it over 80 times you get the brand new iPhone.
You either spend around +1200$ in order to remove all the hindrances the game put on you or 5,000hour AFk farming and training in order to get optimal grinding.

As a veteran in this game, I must admit its cringing to watch his approach XD
It's 2023 who goes into MMO game without watching some tutorials for beginners first? I mean, he is pretty inaccurate in this video.
First, you can have pretty decent gear with season progression, which is really fun and frequent open-world PvP there is mostly on equal gear (cos its ez to progress in season).
After the season you can participate in T1 node wars a guild mass PvP with CAPPED gear score so you won't get one taped and have a decent PvP feeling.
Going into Battle Arena which is a practice ground and interfering with strangers who are duelling with friends or for "spot" is a pretty rude thing to do by the way.
Its funny how knowing game well changes perspective on those "in depth reviews" of "gamers" who rly most time spent making YT videos about games not actually playing and enjoying the game.

Quality review, the comedy was top as well as the info, really enjoyed it. As you continue to play in bdo you will realize that you can progress quite quickly and if you join a guild that can help you out a lot too. Depending what you like you should find the ideal guild for that. you can find mixed guilds. Pvp, Pve, Lifeskill, casual community focused guilds. A lot of these reviews sadly miss sieges, node wars and guilds which is imo any guild/clan is massive part of any mmo. Also BDO does have dungeons a solo dungeon and a group dungeon, actually 2 a frost one and a sand one. The frost one is when you complete the latest dlc quests, the sand one is after all that you do the reworked balenos quests iirc. So you can group grind with friends and a lot of players enjoy this as it helps fight off players who just want to kill anyone depending what server you are on. For example if you are grinding Arsha. Expect to be in PvP a lot in popular spots. You can start group grinding right off the bat for one of the best spots for exp in the game at "miru" if you wanted but you need to have geared out and i recommend fully gearing out a seasonal character. Once you have completed a seasonal char you have imo gone through tutorial stage and are at a comfortable gear where you can pve to your hearts content in most of the spots in the game, pvp too. So on this video you only reached level 58 and levelling is so easy up to lvl 61 in this game then it starts to become hard thereafter. The way Arena works is you go in you get killed, this is how you learn your class, maybe you make friends. If not find some, usually a guild is the best way and practice with them. Also Redbattlefield it's in the name, there is a version for newer players called season rbf. Being seasonal means your gear is capped. If there is no season there is an alternative gear set you can acquire which is similar to that of the seasonal gear.

the asmongold clip you played, well he has mistaken the process and got fucked by it, trying to upgrade an object he shouldnt even try.
anyway, if your not an enanching enjoyer, you can buy EVERYTHING in the game from the market, you just need to grind/lifeskill your way into the money to afford it, and is really really easy to progress at the beginning. you will be doing multiple upgrades/month for at least the first 6 months. if you fail BEFORE THAT, you simply messed up/didnt watch guides/didnt understand how system works

All of the interesting stuff is purchased from the marketplace using real money while most of the armors you can earn in-game are ugly af. You also can't mix and match to create unique sets. Glad to see someone actually took their time and explore what bdo has to offer. You even touched upon lifeskills and the bdo economy which is a completely different game by itself. The combat is indeed god tier with alot of complex combos and animation cancelling mechanics. Its a sandbox, pvp oriented and progression mmo. Has plenty of classes to choose from, and the game gets frequent updates of new content and improvements. I do understand the frustration with the pay to win aspect, but over the years gearing has become more lenient… within 6 months you can obtain 700gs. If you make smart decisions and avoid enhancing. Bdo has its flaws like dsync issues and the incentivized enhancing system. It will never be for everyone though. All games have their own flaws and I don’t think there is a perfect mmo game. Funny review! Nice work! You made a nice comprehensive overview of it. Though I haven't played in a bit some of your concerns are catered toward, ie they have a team based gear matched pvp arena. What you saw there was the practice grounds, generally that is for meeting up with people that you know have close gear score and you can spar each other. It you ask in the chat for that area people will even take off gear to try to match you so you can get sparring in. Which is kind of why they say it isn't pay to win, because a lot of it is timing based, and education about the system, and classes that no, way out gearing people can tend to be pay to lose. Good clans will get you competing against people in your knowledge and progression area and everyone knows it takes forever, just depends on you ability to adapt and execute.
You can see a lot of players on twitch that have done it forever and still get owned by lesser geared practically unknowns and while they are cool, you likely have seen their cap. They then start blaming it on the class and throw more money on the game and swap classes and while the skills and combos can be very similar, timings are very different and nothing beats familiarity with your class.
Lifeskilling is fun and interesting but like you also allude to it can be fully consuming in its own right. There is so much to do and often lifeskills support each other so you might be completely engrossed in huge time syncs, to get stat bonuses that slowly come, that amount to more free time, and then never have time to play any fighting. lol
I mean like I quit because after a while I was spending just so much damn time managing my inventory and turn ins, when really all i wanted to do was to be able to fun my gear upgrades.
Speaking of which, you DO NOT have to gamble upgrading, that is actually one of the end game kinds of skills, otherwise you can pay and pay heavily as you learn how. You can watch people on twitch that literally that is all they do is upgrade and put on market. I mean you can also just play the market buy low and sale high and be making tons of money. Just being patient is the tough part and it never really feels like you have spent enough,
You were upgrading through seasons though and even it has a way to navigate it, but it throws tons of mats to you for free and you don't fail as much. But it is really easy to waste too many and or expect things to happen differently than they do and that is tough to deal with.

Very well made review, you've pointed out things that other miss. It's true that the enhancing is... it is what it is... but outside of the relatively easy to enhance starter tuvala gear and the late late-game items you don't really have to enhance anything? They've introduced upgradeable gear and you can also just straight up buy the items you want from the central market and leave enhancing to people that enjoy it or are lucky.
In the endgame there are things to do, there's sailing and bartering you haven't mentioned, there are guild bosses you can do as a guild. There are 3 dungeons you can run weekly with 4 of your friends for some good rewards. There are artifacts to go after like the compass, map, merchant's ring, fancy orzeca or nouver outfit you can aim towards. And then things you have mentioned as sieges, nodewars, GvGs..
It is true that the game doesn't necessarily feed those things to you, more like it gives the community/guild the ability to create the endgame content themself.

The main reason I take breaks is the massive time investment required to catch up with the rest of the player base or those with deep pockets.

@@philxdev Completely wrong. Virtually no one uses "deep pockets" to catch up. It's prohibitively expensive. You obviously don't understand the math behind it nor the constraints. This isn't Lost Ark, people aren't just buying their gear with in-game real money currency. It really doesn't work like that.
In fact, it SO MUCH doesn't work like that that there is a very healthy "piloting" black market to have people play your account for you because that's the only reasonable way to progress. The top level players aren't spending money in the store to race to top level gear, they're paying a third world country denizen to grind for them (against the game's rules). That's how much paying to win isn't a thing in the game systems. People would rather spend money to buy an entire usable endgame account or for a person to pilot for them than spend money in-game to try and leapfrog progression. Because it's something that would take literally tens of thousands of dollars to do. Spending $500 on cron stones (the only pay-for-progression you can do) just allows you to enhance more in the RNG system and would be a drop in the ocean of progression. Buying outfits to sell them for silver is INSANELY bad for generating money and literally no one I've ever met does it. In 4 years, I have met ZERO people who bought outfits and sold them to progress, even in the short term.
Stop parroting bullshit that's untrue about a game you don't know anything about. Annoying.

BDO is free right now cause of 7th anniversary event! You can turbo charge your progression by playing on the season server for special gear called tuvala gear. If you play enough on season to get full pen tuvala gear (basically max level tuvala gear) you can convert all of the armor and weapons to tett boss gear through an npc called Jetina. Boss gear is high end gear and a step below endgame (fallen god gear etc). You can also do the magnus quest for one pen (max level) boss armor piece of your choice.

    Great and funny video.
As for the upgrade system: it used to be mandatory to progress, and yes, it was frustrating as luck was a major factor about hiw you perform in the game.
While it's still in the game, it became an optional system, much like gathering. You can gear up your main character to max level mostly using other in game, PVE centric systems and buying additional gear from the in-game auction house; and with the tagging system, you can have any other class in the game co-maining, so you can experience the whole range of the game with minimal grind.
Now the upgrade system serves three purposes.
1: monetising valuable items that cannot me sold directly on the market. Stack scrolls, loyalty points, anti-downgrading gear that you gain naturally with your progression: you turn that into a random amount of money (but within a predictable range, when you get good at it), by upgrading gear and selling it on the market.
2: arbitrage. At times, the price of some low and mid level items are skewed. For example, suppose that a DUO crescent ring costs 500M; you can create it with a base and a PRI, with 50-60 chance of success; on failure, you lose the components. Now, say that the PRI costs 100M and the base 30M. You invest 130M for a 50-60% chance to win 500M. If you do it once, it's a gamble, but if you do it 20 times in a row, you turn chance into a random, but predictable profit.
3: endgame money sink. After you have completed your gear, you'll attempt highly costly enchantments. The price is usually in line with the success chances, so the process is fair, as you will get back a bit more than the money you put in, eventually, and produce end game gear for other players to get.
Of course, you cans still use it as a mere gambling game, but that's not the recommended way to.play thus game; also, the fact that there are so many enchantments to do grants that a player won't get unfairly ahead for a fortunate stroke of luck: they may enjoy a temporary and limited advantage, but that's all.
I really like how the system works now in the grand scale of the game, and I am the most risk-adverse and anti-whale person you can think of.

Lmao nice review. Great humour and edits too.
So i just want to share my perspective as a rather casual grinder, and spending dimes only for cosmetics.
This is a wall of text, so only read this if you have extra time lol, i just want to get it out here.
What i like about BDO is it has improved SO MUCH since i started playing, which probably around the start of pandemic. The improvement that i really liked are:
    1) "Season" Character & Server. It really improve the speed of your character and gear progression. Of course newer player benefit the most out of this, but it is a good system to catch up to the game's first soft cap power level (which previously i struggle to achieve in normal server with their horrendous enhance system lol).
    2) Guaranteed "PEN" (highest level gear) Gear or Accessories progression. Just like what the video says, enhancing is horrendous. BUT you can obtain those high level gear by buying them through silvers that you saved, OR you do a bit by bit progression to get those gear where you cannot fail. It's good because it just respect your time. You grind, you progress those guaranteed gears.
    3) 1 Hour Private Grinding Zone. You just got back from work, want to grind a little in the highly contested grindzones, but afraid of the open world PvP? We got your back. Go to the grindzones, press the button, and boom you are teleported to your privat grindzones, no other people to bother you for quick little grinds. Hopefully they expand more of the grind location.
    4) Fully voiced story (for some chapters). So as for now, there are 2 starting zones, the newer ones are fully voice acted, and the story is okay. But then they decided to revamp the story for the older starting zone so it will be fully voice acted, and have proper boss fight with phases. And i gotta say, the story is better than i thought, but sadly the voice acted part is only for the first sequence of main quests in first town. I hope they expand it for the next chapters and towns because i really did enjoy it as i create another character.
    5) 3v3 Arena mode. So here's the thing about BDO's PVP. I don't like the open world PVP, just let me kill my mobs in peace please. The open arena shown in @9:17 is really fun actually, since you do 1v1, but it felt mostly like sparring. No objectives, no real wins or losses, and sometimes you can't get sparring partner. The problem with war mode shown in @9:10 is, they outgear you so much that you just got killed instantly, and they kinda teleporting around since there are so much people.
But then, they have the 3v3 Arena mode where the gears are normalized. Good god, why it took so long for them to make this mode. It didn't have the gear discrepancy issue (but you still can fight higher level people tho. Lvl 61 vs 63 is pretty big difference lol). It's less people, so you can actually see what they are doing, and decide better what you need to do to counter it.
It really highlight the fun of BDO's PVP. My only complaint is, this is a ranked mode, so it gives too much pressure. They have an unranked mode, but it gives no reward. Lol maybe i'm just asking too much.
Those are the majors updated. There are a lot of smaller quality of live improvement too. I think this game won most improved MMO or something, from Player Choice Award? They post something like that in Steam Community.
Also the new characters still brings different flavor among the older ones so they are still exciting to play. The cosmetics are great. The characters looks lovely.
So it's a really fun sandbox experience imo. You can choose what you want to do with no one rushing you. Casually playing 30min until 1hour on workdays still gives you a good amount of progression or at least money. The community is quite talkative in SEA, but just make sure you read description or patch notes first before asking an apparently obvious questions.
Have fun for whoever interested in this game.

BDO is the only MMO I come back to these days as a 32-year-old with the busiest job of my life and a kid on the way.
You can truly enjoy it at your own pace. Every single thing you do contributes to some level of progress towards your goals (which, really, are typically just silver requirements to purchase an upgrade).
One of the best things, in my opinion, is the giant gap between whales and casual players. That may sound a bit strange, but, hear me out... The people in this game who truly whale are SO FAR AHEAD of casual players that there's zero anxiety to catch up to them. You simply never will. And, with that possibility removed, it's no longer a concern. The whales all go hang out in the highest of end game zones and almost never have a reason to interfere with or stumble across "mid game" players. Somhow, it makes it feel like you're not actually missing out on anything because the whales just can't be caught up to.
And there's SO MUCH TO DO besides grind.
Between that, and the beautiful graphics, it's hard to not enjoy yourself. Even as someone who thinks RP is cringe most of the time, the game is truly beautiful, and I have found myself travelling to random zones for no reason other than to chill and enjoy the view. I'll even go to different grind spots that may be less optimalfor a great change of scenery.
My only complaint, if I had to pick one, would be PvP. You're either in or you're out. The difference between someone who cares and knows what they're doing in PvP and someone just mashing buttons is astronomical. Even when gear is equivalent, a skilled, experienced player will absolutely demolish you. That sounds "fair" and like common sense, but you really don't get a lot of opportunities to engage in PvP until someone is ganking you, so there's not a lot of ways to practice aside from getting manhandled over and over.
