    About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

There are no Tim's where I'm at so open question for all. How does Tim's compare/contrast to Dunkin

I’m biased but I prefer it to dunken. Similar roasts though👍 I’ll pin this so maybe you can get some others input.

I think that is a genius idea to slot a dowel and drill out the handle material to ease the 'handle to knife' process!! I think that should work very well....

Have you ever tried the imitation stone material used for sinks and countertops? I believe it’s resin based, cuts easily and polishes really well. I think one brand name is “corian”
Hundreds of colors and patterns to choose from.

Hi Jeremy, I tried the dowel on a kitchen knife I was working on. It works like a charm and it gives me an exact reference of how far I can shape the handle. In the past it happened more than once that I ended up exposing the epoxy. Can be a nice effect a partially see through handle, naaah, not really😉

Since you did the video on making the bandsaw stand I have seen one or two other makers on you tube with similar setups. When I get my workshop a little more complete I want to do the same,I like being able to multi task with tools .

You know, if you spiral some slight grooves in the dowel, you will have some space for the glue to grab onto a bit better.

Stainless on the bandsaw heats up, work hardens, and eats your blades. Liquid coolant is not an option. Got a compressor ?? Build a jig for a micro air jet focussed at the cutting point ?? It should cool as you cut. Add a valve for on off air flow. Chip removal is an extra bonus.

Hey, I saw the safety glasses you were using that appeared to have “gasket” material going around the eyes. What are they and where can I get some? They look more comfortable than “goggles” but great for dusty conditions.
    Cheers.

Switch out the blade to 24 TPI for Stainless, use a little water for cooling and set the metal bandsaw speed to the middle setting, it will cut stainless like butter!

Hey Jeremy. I saw an idea for this construction of sanding a slight flat down the dowel to allow air to escape and for epoxy squeeze out. Not sure of its efficacy, but logically it makes sense. Not my idea, just passing along the snowball of sharing.

  • @zgrywusbat471

The way i shape my handles off the knife is i glue parts with CA, and i hope that epoxy will keep everything together well just from the inside ;)

why do you have to cut that steel outside? does it make toxic fumes when cut with a grinding wheel?

    • @Simplelittlelife
      @Simplelittlelife  5 років тому +2

No, I just make a huge amount of dust and stink and I don’t like having that in my shop. Makes way more mess than the belt grinder because so much of the abrasive disc wears off. It’s nasty. Good question👍

  • @szymonjastrzebski2909

While gluing clamp down the handle, this way nothing inside'll move, take blade of the handle, clear tang from epoxy, re-insert handle, and repeat previous steps. If your tang is clean after inserting it that means that you can leave handle alone and wait to glue hardens enought to work on handle

½" is very big... normal japanese WA handles use 8mm tangs... not 12.5mm gives you a little more room to grind and shape

At -10C us Brit’s seem have a mass panic, and everyone leaves the house with about 30 layers looking like an Arctic Michellin Man.
Unless you’re from the North, then you say it’s nae too bad and go out in shorts and t-shirt.
