It's funny how you label Maciej Nowicki, the chief architect of the Chandigarh, just as a "Albert Mayer's dead partner", when in fact - Maciej made most of the plans for the city originally, before Le Corbusier taking over. Besides, why would Mayer withdraw after Nowicki's death, if he already did all those things on his own? Could he not finish his own work? It is also obvious just how much of inspiration Maciej drew from the Central and Eastern European brutalism style.
Chandigarh was forcefully declared the capital of both states, however, it was originally only the capital of Panjab despite the latter being unwilling, it was taken away from the state just like everything else since 1947.
@@arnavranka4510 Here's an excerpt from an article about it if your bhakt brain still can't figure things out on it's own: "The Capital of Punjab (Development and Regulation) Act, 1952, defines Chandigarh as the capital of Punjab. Just copy this excerpt and you'll find the source
@@hackbaba999that’s not the real reason. After partition, due to the loss of Lahore to Pakistan, the eastern Punjab needed a new capital. Chandigarh was chosen as it lies in the crossroads between the western Punjabi speaking, southern haryanvi speaking and northern mountainous districts. It was the state of Punjab which wanted a separate Punjab composed only of Punjabi speakers and started the Punjabi suba movement. You can’t give the city to state of Punjab just for that reason. Haryana also had equal claim in it. Best option is to move Haryana capital to somewhere central like Hisar and move Punjab capital to Ludhiana. Chandigarh is not Punjabi or Haryanvi. It’s it’s own place!
A unique fact. Chandigarh was inhabited by civilisations from the time of indus valley civilisation. (3300BCE TO 1300 BCE )The design of that time was inspiration for the architects to design the city on the same design. The way the roads, divisions of sectors are built, the design is inspired well from those times . And built upon it. Kudos to Jeanneret and Le corbusier
Other cities here in northwest India are awfully chaotic, other states in the East are worse Somehow Chandigarh works, it is.. Logical Good City, kind people
I recently visited Chandigarh for an educational conference. I must say I was entranced by the greenery and efficient traffic control in the city. However, I also found city too...orderly. I know it sounds weird but a city needs a degree of chaos in it to be vibrant. The minute planning of Chandigarh has made it like a honeycomb, beautiful but repetitive. A city should be like a nest, neat enough to meet the citizens need and a little rough to feel the vibrancy.
The architect is not to blame for the shortcomings of modern day. With planning power during construction akin to an auspex precognition able to foretell our radically unanticipated future, which is heavy on industry and has a large population, as well as genuinely just compensation from the brits for all of their evils against the Indian people to use as funding, this wonderful city might have become a contemporary utopia. An illuminating beacon for the entire world.

I love Chandigarh but I refrained from buying a house there. I bought one in Panchkula. The fear of Chandigarh going into Punjab aka Khalistan scares me. We can make trips to Chd from PKL. Better than succumbing to another partition.
@@mateuszcielas3362 I could be biased in this matter but still Chandigarh is pretty cool! It's got this neat vibe with the whole planned city thing. Clean, green, and surprisingly chill. Living here is like having a balance of city life without the chaos.
Love the video, just thought to mention something the video left out was, Chandigarh was able to blend a sort of brutalist architecture with a green asthetic resulting in something quite unique. If you are able you should definitely get the free guided tour of the government buildings (head) as they best show the actual architecture style corbusier was known for. Also props to the creators for condensing this much information in such a short time, years ago i tried making a documentary on Chandigarh covering its past and the hope for its future but found it difficult to cover everything.

I'm from Srilanka. I visited that city in year 2001 and at that time it was the capitol city for both Punjab and Haryana states. Is it still the same?
Yes
Chandigarh was forcefully declared the capital of both states, however, it was originally only the capital of Panjab despite the latter being unwilling, it was taken away from the state just like everything else since 1947.
@@hackbaba999 Punjabis on their way to claim every place with a significant Sikh population as part of Punjab
@@arnavranka4510 Here's an excerpt from an article about it if your bhakt brain still can't figure things out on it's own: "The Capital of Punjab (Development and Regulation) Act, 1952, defines Chandigarh as the capital of Punjab. The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, does not make any changes with the arrangement arrived at in 1952 and in 1966, though Punjab Re-Organisation Act, 1966, came into being and Chandigarh was made as Union territory but it the city retained its character of capital of Punjab, the advocate general submitted before the court".
I am from chandigarh ,India. It is indeed very beautiful.
My god the animation. It was a joy to watch.
I feel proud hearing about Chandigarh because I myself have been living here since my childhood. 😁👍🏼
same
Aaahhhh my city ❤❤❤❤
Can't be physically present here ..but heart is always here ..thanks a lot for making this video
Correct our map ted ed 4:46
It is correct map.
Cry harder.
@@MustafaAli-lb8dq nah it's not Pakistan is not shown in it
A unique fact.
Living in chandigarh. My mood is always uplifted when I cycling.
I kind of shocked when I saw you mentioned my city.
It's number one planned city in India, no other city Is planned in such manner awesome
Other cities here in northwest India are awfully chaotic, other states in the East are worse
Somehow Chandigarh works, it is.. Logical
Good City, kind people
Thank you for your kind words for my city and my people
I recently visited Chandigarh for an educational conference.
Good to know, I somewhat agree to Chandigarh being ordered however it is very hard to have a balance between Order and Choas
True! You have articulated it so well. Having lived in 10+ cities in India, I feel the same about Chandigarh.
Well said
Recently visited Chandigarh & believe me, it's a very beautiful city ❤
Love from Chandigarh. ❤
What are you trying to say? Lol
@@Bhuvan_MS There is nothing to misunderstand. I did not leave room for ambiguity, I made a straightforward statement. Try reading it again, but if the issue is one of a language barrier take your time if you are having trouble understanding anything.
*I'm proud to say, I live in this city*
Thank Corbusier.
I am truly thankful for your comment, likewise I love my Chandigarh
The sound mixing on this episode was really distracting, it was difficult to hear the narration over the music volume.
Kudos to Chandigarh . Thinking to moving in.
It's obviously an interesting and fancy city, judging by the past and architectural design and planning.
as a person who lives in Chandigarh I can assure you it's really a great place to live, you'll see a park after every 50m walk (or even more less)
Wow I really wanna visit Chandigarh one day!
Chandigarh Is beautiful, i was born and since living here, it's not like any other indian cities :)
Kudos to Chandigarh ❤❤. Thinking to moving in.
The budget of Ted-Ed is so high to get this insane animation❤
Chandigarh is an awesomely designed City ..
you have not covered many other important aspects of The Designing of Chandigarh
and also that the present governance has ruined Chandigarh due to corruption.
Watching from Chandigarh. Great video
4:47 I know some of the Kashmir area is “disputed”, but I think Indians would appreciate it if you use a better map to represent the country the next time :)
Na
Free Kashmir #FreeKashmir
Indians love to cry about British colonization of India, but have no problem with Indian colonization of Kashmir 😅
Typical Indian hypocrisy
the parade grounds! so important for culture. and ofc sustainable architecture is 👌🏻
Le Corbusier made Chandigarh. One of the greatest architects.
He was Swiss-French, not just French as the narrator said.
more like redisgned
My City 🌆❤️....My Pride ⭐
True 🌟
Chandigarh city planning is quite extensively discussed atleast in modern Indian architecture syllabus.
India 🇮🇳 is beautiful
Chandigarh is an interesting design. And this 2D/3D animation makes a beautiful video.
never imagined Chandigarh was made with such Thoughtfulness
This is like a whole movie❤
This animation is one of the best I've ever seen. Amazing.
These animated videos are a joy to watch
I live in panchkula near chandigarh and this is just its perfect explanation
Always great to see videos regarding India in ted ed..❤
Wow! great animation, seamless transitions and the arhitectural narrative. As an architect, I can tell this is a very informative and historically accurate video. Thanks for knowledge.
I love Chandigarh but I refrained from buying a house there. I bought one in Panchkula. The fear of Chandigarh going into Punjab aka Khalistan scares me. Our families already have PTSD from partition. And whenever there is Independence Day etc, the sardarjis walk around the neighborhoods taking down the Indian flags. It’s so sad. We can make trips to Chd from PKL. Better than succumbing to another partition.
Never thought that I would see my city here...
is it as good as they say?
@@mateuszcielas3362Yes it is, if it is possible do visit and go to know it better
@@mateuszcielas3362 I could be biased in this matter but still Chandigarh is pretty cool! It's got this neat vibe with the whole planned city thing. Clean, green, and surprisingly chill. Living here is like having a balance of city life without the chaos.
gotta go next time visit then @@vinaysmain
@@mateuszcielas3362 Yeah sure.
Video is as beautiful as Chandigarh, made with love.
CHANDIGARH MENTIONED 🔥🔥🗣️🗣️📢📢 SUKHNA LAKE WE GO 🥶🥶🥶
LMAO
I am an indian ,l saw your video for the first time and l subscribed u plz give a heart ❤
An even greener, "Indian", tight-knit city would be Bokaro Steel City in Jharkhand. Chandigarh is beautiful but too urban for me haha, I don't fit in at all, they live in a whole different world. Bokaro however, is a perfect substitute. Had some of my best memories there
Production quality on Ted's videos is sick
Thank you Mr. Nehru ❤🇮🇳
My family is from Chandigarh! So I know this is definitely true
Salute to our first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his vision for taking India forward in such a difficult time after independence!
@TEDed you should correct the Indian Map at 4:48 if you want to do business in India. The whole of J&K is an integral part of India.
