I don’t think it’s narcissism, I think it’s more of brain damage and visual malformation. In the mothers song, there’s a scene of someone called 911, getting bashed multiple times, and becomes malformed. The person chasing the person calling 911 was the mother, and the other one was presumably the father. Seeing as it was the head he was bashed in, he probably got brain damage after how many times he got hit, making him think he’s ugly and that nobody likes him.

judging by the „they turned me down“ he has already been judged so he made himself perfect and he knows he is perfect but can‘t get himself to go out anymore.
Well, it's theorized that the Mirror Man is an abuse victim and was turned down when he tried to reach out because he's male. That's why his face is horribly scared and disfigured and the mom's flashbacks in Virtuous Cycle give hints to the abuse (also the "I feel terrible for all the things- I feel terrible" showing she's still trying to look at herself as the victim)
I had a Narcissistic father, and he would always blame society for his insecurities and bad habits instead of trying to fix it, this reminds me of him on spiritual level lol
I think what very interesting about the family in opal is they all are sympathetic to a degree granted that does not excuse their treatment of clare but makes it more understandable i guess. With the mirror man it's not just the fact he is narcissistic he was clearly hurt to such a degree that it made him so hyperfixated on his apperance. Possibly even developing BDD. Just something i thought interesting.
the mother is definitely the least sympathetic, drug addicted and physically/emotionally abusive to claire for reasons that we don't know. the grandfather is just an old blind man that let television corrupt him, and the father was just a man who was put down for being himself so he decided to hyprefixate on his appearance until he was 'perfect' (tho it doesn't justify that both of them are bad people, it just explains why theyre bad)
@@cloudly_cane1534 he says 'no, this makes me feel!' because the mirror broke. it broke away a part of the lie he's living and made him show a little bit of his real self
I feel like I heard this before I heard it for the first time. I feel like I watched Opal before I watch Opal for the first time. I feel like this about all of Jack Stauber’s creations, it’s weird comforting form of deju vu, uncanny valley, and like talking to an old friend
So we can all agree that Opal has one of the darkest and is one of the most ambitious projects Jack has ever created. You can interpret the songs however you wish, but they all have a reasonably significant meaning for the characters. Easy to breathe has a more literal one, where the grandpa has a hard time breathing as related to his addictions to cigarettes. The father, even if he isn't physically abusive towards Claire, he is still abusive towards her, where he is constantly belittling her appearance to uplift himself. He also says "You know how that makes me feel" Once Claire runs from him when she sees her grandfather. Which is outwardly blaming her for his emotions. He is narcissistic and insecure in his appearance and his emotions. Claire's mother. in her drunken stupor vented to Claire. And in doing so, revealed how she only sees Claire as a caretaker for her. And since this is the first time she's seen her in probably a few days, she says "You're being a person today?" and "You should really be more considerate honestly, but i forgive you" And then goes on to blame everyone and forgive them for things they didn't do. She's blaming her addictions on Claire's father and grandfather and also claire.
It’s really sad because he’s trying to perfect himself so damn much he’s actually tearing his skin and harming himself At 1:36 and also near the end of the short when his mirror flips to reveal opal or Claire’s face she was a very distorted and shambled face despite what you saw earlier in the short.
one of my favourite small details in this short is that dad over here doesn't wear a ring, nor does his wife and im pretty sure its on purpose (OR ATLEAST I HOPE) on jack's part. i love the subtle and small story it tells there and honestly i completely expected that from these mr and mrs :[
I have a theory (suprise): The mirror man (or father to claire/Opal) was hit by the mother when she was drunk and or high. As proven by the short haired humanoid figure calling the police, some would argue that the mother has short hair but hers is at shoulder length anyways, The line "they turned me down now I live my nightmare" I think that was his dreams' being crushed because I think he wanted to become an actor/model but his face was all bruised and cut so he went home and just focused on his looks because they didn't accept him.
A detail I loved in the animation before this song plays is that while Opal is visibly scared of the Mother and Grandfather she doesn't look scared of the Father, she looks disgusted and disappointed, almost as if to some level she sympathises with the other two but can't find a single redeeming quality in him. Granted there are a few hints that during the Father's segment we're actually seeing things from his perspective (like his appearance in the mirrors) but I have doubts that Opal's reaction wasn't genuinely how she looked at him
This whole song is about the father wanting to go outside to society, but is afraid that he will be judged by his looks, so he makes it so perfect that he destroys his skin, but doesn't realize it. He only wants to talk to people about him and only himself. Trying to make him self perfect
hi guys fun fact :D the "they turned me down" line isn't exactly society rejecting him but if you look at the beginning of opal you can see a paper for a modeling job. He wanted to be a model but they turned him down.
this song was pretty much saying “pity me, boost my ego, agree with me”. the character mirror man shows very noticeable signs of being a narcissist with a damaged ego. if this is wrong dont insult me its 1 in the morning and i didnt sleep last night. i am speaking solely from comparing him to people with narcissistic personality disorder in my life who have similar behaviour to him.
One interesting thing I noticed while watching opal was that when she was running from the grandpa one of his mirrors broke. After he said " you know how this makes me feel". What that signified to me was that when something happens that he doesn't like or damages hi ego he jumps straight to the " You know how this makes me feel so don't do it. " It makes it to wear anytime you try to set boundaries or express that you don't like something well then their the victim and your just a bully
I remember listening to this 24/7 in 2021. Going on trips texting with my friends, watching Opal and other Jack Stauber videos. Love you, Jack Stauber, it hits hard watching your videos again.
I absolutely love the visuals in this scene. There is so much creativity in the way the mirrors are utilized. Fun but super unnerving visuals. Also love how he uses the mirrors as wings at the end. Definitely some of Jack’s best work ❤

I dont think the father was a narcissist to begin with, because the lyrics suggest there was a horrible event in his life that made him a narcissist in the first place. In the video Virtuous Cycle (the mom one) there was a scene where the father was shown running away from the mom while trying to call 911 and it ends with the mom bashing him to the ground and beating his face until he is disfigured that caused him to become solely focused on 'fixing himself' and becoming the narcissistic person he is.
On the actual video of the movie I saw a theory that he was actually a decent guy/dad until this event, which makes it kinda sad if you take that theory into account. That also explains why Claire doesn’t run from her dad- he used to be a lot nicer.
I can’t tell who was hurt more in life; the Grandfather, who was overcome by a cigarette addiction that is no longer mendable, or the father, who fell to his insecurities and only can care about himself.
“They turned me down”repeating means that even though he sees himself as perfect, the echoes of his failures are still holding him back from trying to be seen.
PSA: the father is just as abusive as the rest of Opal's family, just in a less obvious way. She tries to leave him before her grandfather comes and he stops her by saying that she treats him like a complete stranger. When the grandfather comes, he tells her not to leave and "you know how this makes me feel". In both cases, he guilts her into listening to his troubles. Both are classic examples of emotional abuse. The number of comments of people who sympathize with him concerns me
my theory on this song is that mirror man has suffered quite a lot of abuse from god knows who and got screwed up to the point where he has isolated himself from the world to fix himself and make him look perfect again and i’m saying this based off of two lyrics “they turned me down now i live my nightmare” and “now i sit here in reflection chamber fixing myself so that all can savor”
in “virtuous cycle” (the moms song), it’s seen that she presumably tears off his face or at least messes it up really badly after he tried to call the cops on her. also, if you watched opal and slowed down the part where the mirror turns around, you can see that his face is a distorted version of what he saw in the mirror. as for “they turned me down now i live my nightmare”: i speculate that after the cops arrived at the home, he gave his statement but since male abuse is rarely heard of; the charges were dropped and he still has to live in the house with her. your theory is really good though ! ^_^
@@bunnytailssHe could have possibly stayed because of the Co dependence of Claire or because he can at least keep a normal family image to society. Like narcissism.
Imagine how damaging the line "They turned me down, now I live my nightmare; got to be seen by someone out there" is to Claire. I'm assuming it's a high probability that Claire associates herself to the reason her father is living in a 'nightmare'; or the bare minimum has a low self-esteem after hearing that. Secondly, Claire is literally looking at him, though he is obstructed by mirrors, when he is asking someone to see him. A good mirroring (haha) from the Opal family saying 'we see you, Opal.' Claire is seeing everyone, but it is never reciprocated, and it is clouded by narcissism. The only reciprocation of what Claire needs is coming from a billboard advertisement.
Also, during the bits when Claire is with her imaginary family there's clear focus/fixation on the dad, which seems (to me at least) that he's the one she wants to be seen by the most.
You know you're great to your daughter/granddaughter when A L I T E R A L P I E C E O F V I N Y L A C R O S S T H E S T R E E T does your job better than you.
My headcanon is that Dad is a former actor/model who worked in a few commercials and ads, where he was hired for his handsome face. But then some incident involving Mom ended up disfiguring his face beyond repair, which resulted in the ad agencies to "turn him down", and so now he "lives his nightmare", I.E. being ugly. So now he spends his time in the reflection chamber desperately trying to make himself look good with makeup, shallow affirmations, and putting down everyone else around him.
I think he and the mom (possibly) were both in the industry, possibly in magazines (perhaps they're the man and woman who were on the cover of one of the magazines shown at the start). Then mom got heavy into drugs and alcohol, and, between letting her looks go from the substance abuse, and attacking her husband, she would've lost her job as well. Actually that would ad yet another tragic layer to Claire fixating on the billboard. If her family was in the advertisement industry at one point, maybe that was when the family was at there happiest. She's not just daydreaming about a better life, she's longing for the past.
@@KeeperOfUntoldDreams If you don’t mind me adding to your theory, what if Opal was actually Claire’s older sister who was living the life that Claire had wanted, but she could only imagine because she wasn’t even born. Opal was told not to ever go to the house across the street, but she did and wound up not returning. Claire was trying to imagine whatever her older sister could’ve encountered, but she could only think of the horrible situation she was currently in. The loss of Opal was the downfall of the company, as well as the family’s mental stability.
Can anyone recommend similar sounding songs? I’ve listened to a small part of Jack’s discography, but I seem to specifically obsessed with the silly singing style. Any songs with a similar voice used?
Well, there’s this one artist who does stuff in a semi-Stauber style. They’re music is nice, but I don’t really hear to much of a similarity. Their name is Sodikken.
“Glad your ankles aren’t in it though, nothing against them I just- never mind” he tries not to be rude about it, which means he knows he sounds like a total asshole, wether or not the fact that he’s trying not to means he’s redeemable is unknown.
@@ameliawillarsThat’s probably not because he doesn’t want to hurt Claire, he just has a perfect image of himself as someone who can do no wrong, and saying something directly rude to Claire would tarnish that view of himself.
my theory is that the dad / mirror man was so insecure about his appearance that he tried "fixing" his appearance but in reality he was disfiguring his own face as we see him doing here 2:25 and we see more of his face in a brief scene where the mirror turns and we see his deformed corpse like face.
I think it’s really interesting that they chose to have the dad feel insecure looks wise. Usually that’s projected onto women, but it’s a cool change of pace to see a father figure experience this, especially since it happens a lot in real life and is often overlooked
The mirror man has the most of my sympathies because he can't control how he looks and his addiction is much more mediocre than the other 2 abusive characters in the family, with cigarettes and drugs. Jack Stauber made this the most unique character in Opal as instead of just making a character addicted to alcohol he was bothered to make a very specific and unique addict. 10/10 Character, Got attached as soon as I saw him because he was the only one who didn't immediately go crazy.

The dad was abused by the mom we can see him covering a wound with makeup

He's so self-absorbed you can hear his reactions to his own song in the backgrounds of his lyrics
The fact that the mirror man song is about him and his insecurities, makes me feel that he feels judged by society
thats exactly it
judging by the „they turned me down“ he has already been judged so he made himself perfect and he knows he is perfect but can‘t get himself to go out anymore.
Yeah thats
literally it!
Congratulations, you figured it out ! :)

Yeah i always found it was kind of a corrupt Narcissm where he felt so insecure about himself he became obsessed about himself
the mother is definitely the least sympathetic, drug addicted and physically/emotionally abusive to claire for reasons that we don't know.
the grandfather is just an old blind man that let television corrupt him, and the father was just a man who was put down for being himself so he decided to hyprefixate on his appearance until he was 'perfect'
(tho it doesn't justify that both of them are bad people, it just explains why theyre bad)
He does also says “You know how this makes me feel! :(“ when Claire runs away from him-

I’m kinda addicted to this song
Yes all the time
I feel like I heard this before I heard it for the first time.
And her mother also abuses her father, you can see that in the end of her song in a sort of flashback
The inevitable loop of perfecting yourself more and more just to be seen.

There’s something special about hearing this late at night when you’re sleep deprived
I have a theory (suprise): The mirror man (or father to claire/Opal) was hit by the mother when she was drunk and or high. As proven by the short haired humanoid figure calling the police, some would argue that the mother has short hair but hers is at shoulder length anyways, The line "they turned me down now I live my nightmare" I think that was his dreams' being crushed because I think he wanted to become an actor/model but his face was all bruised and cut so he went home and just focused on his looks because they didn't accept him.
only jack stauber can get me addicted to a song about a father neglecting their child
A detail I loved in the animation before this song plays is that while Opal is visibly scared of the Mother and Grandfather she doesn't look scared of the Father, she looks disgusted and disappointed, almost as if to some level she sympathises with the other two but can't find a single redeeming quality in him. Granted there are a few hints that during the Father's segment we're actually seeing things from his perspective (like his appearance in the mirrors) but I have doubts that Opal's reaction wasn't genuinely how she looked at him

hi guys fun fact :D
the "they turned me down" line isn't exactly society rejecting him but if you look at the beginning of opal you can see a paper for a modeling job.
He's explaining why he's doing this to himself.

@@peanutgolds4058it's confirmed his. Wife beat him causing face disfigurement and brain trauma
I can’t tell who was hurt more in life; the Grandfather, who was overcome by a cigarette addiction that is no longer mendable, or the father, who fell to his insecurities and only can care about himself.
i think the grandfather
Absolute banger
It's implied that his wife and honestly and possibly the grandfather of Claire abuse him so he stays in the bathroom.
@@bunnytailssHe could have possibly stayed because of the Co dependence of Claire or because he can at least keep a normal family image to society. Like narcissism.

@@guppy1619 Yeah, that.
@@KeeperOfUntoldDreamsOr at least the one she's least scared of or comfortable around
The loss of Opal was the downfall of the company, as well as the family’s mental stability.

my theory is that the dad / mirror man was so insecure about his appearance that he tried "fixing" his appearance but in reality he was disfiguring his own face as we see him doing here 2:25 and we see more of his face in a brief scene where the mirror turns and we see his deformed corpse like face.
I'm listening to this at midnight on a Sunday when I need to do stuff tomorrow. Too busy listening to Jack Stauber
I think it’s really interesting that they chose to have the dad feel insecure looks wise. Usually that’s projected onto women, but it’s a cool change of pace to see a father figure experience this, especially since it happens a lot in real life and is often overlooked
