Exactly as you assessed that it's a super sharp ultra-wide zoom. I've taken many nice architectural photos by this while working on 5DsR, A7R2 and GFX 50R.

Dustin, I finally got to take the sigma 14-24 out for a sunset shot over a cliff at the beach. Oh my did it make me a happy camper! As I took shots and zoomed into both corners I was absolutely stunned how sharp and clear the corners looked. Great contrast, colors and best of all no lens flares compared to my Nikon 14-24 I had which hated the sun. Just holding this beauty feels so satisfying in your hands. Like this big honk of well built glass that is so pleasing to look at. I got the glass from samy's camera here in california so I went back to the store to get 5 year accidental warranty for it since I plan to keep it for long time. Fun part was that they had a sigma rebate going so I got honored for that and didn't have to pay anything for the $150 5 year accidental warranty plus extra store credit. What a great time to be a landscape photographer! I wish you were also a Nikon shooter but that's stretching the wallet too much :)

You know what's I think my favorite thing about the lens other than optical perfection? The darn lens hood. The way it snugs in and stays tight without scratching. I mean common nikon why couldn't you make that in a $2000+ glass! When I was going through zion waters with the nikon 14-24 (I know what a stupid idea to carry that there... haha), my lens hood fell off without me knowing. Luckily someone behind me caught it. One downer is that lightroom does not have a lens profile for it yet though you can apply one in camera raw in adobe photoshop. Just a matter of time anyway till they release update.

Took my Sigma 24mm out with the 14-24mm to shoot low light venues. I think I'll keep the 24mm..because 1.4 is just so awesome. But I'll add the 14-24 to the stable.

Took your advice on this one for my first full frame wide angle on the Sony A7III having been without a landscape lens for 8 months. Wow. Ok it weighs like a neutron star, but actually find that good for added weight shooting on tripod. Its none to shabby on a walkabout too either. A proper fun lens and feels right in the hands for smooth turning from portrait to landscape. Hope I can get an insert ND filter for this. The front element is huge.

Please excuse me if you have already done this but it's just a video suggesting that I think would be awesome for your channel and viewers alike. I have noticed not much worthy of watching comes up when you search for sharpest lenses except for Christopher Frost who is another excellent reviewer. I also notice probably because of the sheer lack of alternative videos like this these videos he has made have very high numbers of views. I think given your knowledge and experience with so many different lenses you would be able to review your top 10 lenses in all the different categories, ie telephoto, wide, ultra wide, zoom, prime etc. This information properly presented is like gold because we the viewers can spend days on youtube researching and really all we want to know is what is the sharpest and best value for money. So I thought I would run this by you as Christopher Frost is the only guy who has really done this well so far (to my knowledge anyway), but someone like you could quite easily match it or surpass it, I've no doubt. 🙂

Joh Kem I had a lot of problems with the early ART series lens , 35 and 50 mainly.
I am very happy to report my current experience changed , on my D850 the 85,135 and now the 14-24 are working great.
The 85 ART was the last lens I had to replace after getting a bad copy.
Yet the 135 and 14-24 are perfect out of the box.
I have heard information from many sources that all currently produced lens are much improve the QC/QA.
2018 ART lens is not 2015.
Check out and you will be surprised.
We all are trying to get better and I think sigma is doing it right now.

Thank you ! i want to add this lens is super relevant to Nikon D850 users, The Nikon 14-24 is not perfect for use with High MP camera , lots of field curvature and focus shift.
plus we don't have a decent 16-35 f 2.8 , which canon and sony has superb options. the only option until now was the Tamron that is a good lens yet still suffers from soft edges , field curvature and CA. 🙏

I am super happy with the Sigma 14-24 on my D810 as well. I had the Nikon 14-24 for couple years before I switched. I definitely LOVE not getting those annoying lens flares I would get with the Nikon 14-24 and getting sharper corners. Kind of reminds me of how optics/build quality got better as new glass came out, like the Nikon 24-70 2.8 to then the VR version which has sharper corner performance.

carey riddell I tested all options for Nikon wide zoom and the one you mentioned is working fine on 24 MP but it can’t cope with D8xx.
Surprisingly the only option for a D850 is the sigma. I just came back from Tour in Normandy and the optics of the Sigma exceeded all my expectations.
I had the Tamron 15-30 and tested the Nikon 14-24 both good options yet none of them has the corner to corner sharpness and clarity of the sigma.

I really love this lens. Such beautiful clean optics and distortion is virtually non existent. The only really upsetting thing for me is that the NiSi S6 filter system that I use for it has the absolute WORST vignetting at the widest focal length. Totally blackened corners. I am forced to zoom down to 16mm and even 17mm to get rid of the vignetting completely. Worse still, this lens is the only ultra wide that suffers from it. Not a fault of NiSi's. Sigma for some reason thought it would be a spiffing idea to design a lens hood that protrudes out so far out beyond the front element. The other lenses by comparison don't have the same issue, if you put them side by side, they all have hoods that are even just a little bit shorter, even the 14mm HSM has one, allowing the filters to sit closer to the front element
I certainly don't regret my purchase, I had bought it primarily for use in real estate and interiors where that widest 14mm makes all the difference in tight spaces and I don't use the filters indoors obviously. And 16mm-24mm are usually the most used landscape focal lengths anyway. But it is a crying shame to know that I cannot go wider if I wanted to when taking landscapes unless I looked into back mounted filter options but those would only allow me to use one at a time and it wouldn't be possible to use graduated filters. Fortunately the nice thing with landscapes is the ability to move around so I can get creative with my limitation.
In your personal experience, do you prefer wide angle lenses like these or would you rather have a package like the Canon 14-35mm F4 with a bit more versatility in focal length and savings in weight but at the cost of vignetting and distortion?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Рік тому

I really like the Sigma 14-24, myself, but yes, filtering can be frustrating. The Canon 14-35mm frustrated me a bit as a reviewer as the optical flaws (vignette and distortion) are so extreme on a lens with such a high price tag.

I really would like to know this lens vs the 12-24mm Sigma, which would you choose if they were the same price (currently they are within about $80 bucks of each other). I want a wide angle IQ and any distortion it other lenses element negatives take priority as both are more than wide enough.

Dustin, I’ve come back to watch these videos for probably a 3rd time now lol. I ended up getting a 16-35 f4 last month for my trip to Hawaii. It’s being returned! Way too soft at f4 for me. Luckily the day before I left my Tamron pre order 28-75 f2.8 arrived and went with me as well. I ended up using it most of the time and it was usually plenty wide. However not always. I guess I could stitch shots together for some wide angle but that doesn’t work well for all shots. So my new question is if you had the Tamron 28-75 and nothing wider for travel landscapes what would you recommend for the Sony A7iii? This Sigma 14-24, the battis 18, the 16-35 gm, the lowa, the rokinon 14, or any other I haven’t thought of? I’ve eliminated the Zeiss 12-24 because of the crazy expensive filter system I’d need to get and this one looks to have the same problem. Thanks!

If you think shooting some interiors or straight lines are in your future, the Laowa 15mm f/2 is a good choice and a complimentary focal length, though it has a few shortcomings of its own. I haven't test the GM lens, but I'm sure it is awesome. I do love this 14-24, and if you think you can deal with the size, go for it!

Looks like a great lens (although some said the flaring is pretty bad..). My only issue is that I live near the beach and this can't use normal filters, which is much easier to wipe off. I wonder how the non internal focusing can deal with the *salty water* on the front element or the blowing *sand* in the air, those sand particles are extra small and almost killed a tamron already.. (got sand under the rings).. Would the Canon 16-35 be a better pick??

Dustin, As a Sony & Canon user, I would like to ask... would I be losing much in image quality on my Sony A7rii if I purchased this lens with the Canon mount (and used a Sigma MC-11) instead of just purchasing the Sony mount instead? thanks.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +1

I haven't found any image quality differences (so long as the MC-11 is accurately machined and sits properly), though there are typically some minor improvements to focus quality with the E-mount versions. I would say if you have both systems that owning the EF mount is the way to go.

Hi Dustin, I got a question. I am torn between the Sigma ART 12-24mm F/4.0 and this SIgma ART 14-24mm F/2.8 . Do you find there is a big difference in distortion from upclose, and do you find the 14-24 2.8 having better colour rendition and contrast?

hehe.. nice videos. Watched over 25 videos since yesterday. thanks for such detailed reviews.
I have 1 question, pls rply when you get time.
I shoot weddings (indian) where i use sigma 35 and 85 combo. I am looking for a longer focal length for pre wedding and outdoor portraits. I used sigma 135 1.8 but that lens is very slow (focus hunting is an another issue) and inaccurate in focusing when compared to 70-200 2.8. I like the bokeh of 135 but i got 4/10 photos out of focused.
so i am very confused between sigma 135 1.8 and nikon 70-200 2.8 (which is fast and accurate). which 1 should i buy ? budget is not an issue bcoz sigma 135 is very expensive here in india it costs nearly same as of 70-200 vr ii
      thanks in advance

You will probably get your most accurate results out of the Nikon, and I think the versatility for weddings is important. A 70-200 is my go-to lens for events.

I do not like the new look of sigmas new lenses I like the old look well made metal look not the new clean plastic look (A) art ? Not nice at all.

Interesting. That's not my perspective, and I certainly don't think that Sigma employed more metals before the ART series.

how does it compare to zeiss wide angle lenses

That’s a pretty broad question, but I would say very favorably. Zeiss does color better than anyone, but this Sigma is sharper at wide apertures and handles both distortion and vignette better.
