I love how she's so open and honest about these companies lol.
Also, composting toilets are definitely the way to go. No smell, no mess, no problem.

    • @moovingon6868
      @moovingon6868 6 років тому +16

Unless you are older and on certain medications that increase the smell of your feces, then composting toilets aren't helpful...... Just keeping it real. Even with the liquid part separated from the solids. Spoke with several composting channels and/or composting toilet channels and they all said, you would have to stop taking the meds, but they are life saving meds...... So much for composting toilet...... The things you don't get to hear about before you get one.....

    • @ballwizz23
      @ballwizz23 6 років тому +30

Idk what this has to do with medication.. But everyone I've talked to that uses composting toilets say they have little to no smell at all. I've seen the cleaning and emptying process and it's nowhere near as nasty as what's demonstrated in this video.
Liz said she has to handle the toilet every few days if I recall. People with composting toilets sometimes go over a month without emptying them with no problem. I'll take that over this mini porta potty any day.

I totally appreciate this video, Better to be given some of the 'Cons' of Van life then find out the hard way on the road - I love a lot of these videos, but they do give more of the 'coolness' then what can go wrong, seems no one wants to talk about how things can go wrong and share their experiences on both sides of the coin. Wish more had, mainly for the solo women going out there thinking that this will be easy peasy and then have to call their family and cry!

That's why IF I did go smaller it would be a 24' RV. Being a truck driver I have no problems getting the 31' RV into any parking spot and a 24' would be no problem at all just the height might be a problem in a few places.
BUT the only problem with a 24' is having to make the bed up like you do in a van! I prefer to just lay down on a regular bed even if it's only 38" wide as I've slept on them for 33 years in a truck! Now a murphy would be just fine!

That’s how I was taught to wash dishes. Rinse together first. Turn off water to conserve water.
Wash cups first to avoid scent from plates and bowls, especially plastic Tupperware. They usually need to be washed twice. I prefer glass now anyways.
Doing all this solo. Hats down. Less headache. Less worries. Clean cook travel when you feel. Owe no one anything. Be discreet. Enjoy you. Save and expand your money for when you are ready for change.
Even when I live in a one or two bedroom apartment. At times, I still mop on hands and knees. Used too much water and soap. Pour small amount of diluted Fabuloso all that’s needed.
I love small space depending on the design and how it’s build.
She reminds of myself in a way but I’d dump the toilet daily. Simple type of bucket seat with bags. Trash the bags daily. Seems quick and cleaner.

At 05:36 I saw mold growing under the green rubber seal on the plastic snap top lid for your glass dish. I have the same set from Costco and the seal can be removed for cleaning by using a knife to gently lift it out of the groove.
One more thing: Never use that much water to clean the floor of an RV. Water is the biggest enemy and you almost want to dry clean only with a lightly dampened rag.

Fairgrounds usually have a dump station that you can use free of charge. This is an often underutilized & overlooked resource. Also, if you purchase a recreational pass for the state you travel in the most you can often use the dump stations & fill your fresh water tank for free at State parks. White vinegar in a spray bottle is a great way to clean your dishes. It is a natural disinfectant & adds shine & sparkle to your dinnerware while conserving water. Additionally, a $5 weed sprayer from Walmart makes a great portable shower! I hope this info is helpful.

Take a look at the Air Head Composting Toilet, you will need it vented to the outside and an electric supply, but you can carry in the pee container into any restroom and dump. The compost can stay for one person two to three weeks. There is no smell and no more dump stations. You only have to buy the medium for the compost, and cleaning supplies, very easy. AH company told me their's can be in a wet area, has seals, but be careful to not get the fan motor wet. Also the AH is slimmer to fit smaller spaces.

OK, thanks for reassuring me, we all have those days when it just loads on!
I think we all have disasters, whether it's a home, car, caravan, campervan or motorhome.
I too have had my thetford toilet leak, unknownly due the incline of van .....under the bed!
Eeew what a smell, luckily only 1's but a still what a message, had to take everything stored, rinse wash & dry.
At the same time I had a puddle of water in the corridor.....the water pump had sprung a miniscule leak that seeped water.
I was so fortunate a local caravan/RV store had the exact same model and I swapped it out myself.
I missed out on an awesome hike that day, due to cleaning & repaires.
(Who would design the toilet cannister cavity to have a gap directly into vehicle?
Why was it not a sealed space that drained outside...ggrrr.)
I have also lost the vent cover to my shower/toilet roof.
These repairs I was forced to make myself as no one wanted to listen to me.
But hey, has made me stronger & wiser.
I now have the confidence to build my own camper van.
    That's life!

Hey Liz (Wild by the Mile)!!! CONGRATULATIONS on the anniversary in the van. You got so many unlucky mishaps right behind each other so you should be okay for a loooooooong time. Couldn't you just have used that large body of water behind you [3:35] to wash in? Looks like you are having a real-life adventure so just take it all in and count it all joy (for the experiences). Be Careful Out There and THANK YOU for sharing.

I lived in a bread truck conversion for 3 years back in the 60's, and to this day every time I flush the toilet in my home I have a greater appreciation for modern plumbing. In other words, my "black water tank size" is pretty much infinite, and the well provides a fresh water capacity of millions of gallons, pretty amazing when you think about it. Van life gave me a greater appreciation of things most home dwellers take for granted is my point.

  • @juniper617

You can go to a camping store and get a sun shower. It’s a sturdy plastic bag with a clear top side and a black bottom side, and a little hose/nozzle. You can leave it filled with cold water in the sun to heat, or you can just fill it with warm water. It’s inexpensive and when it gives out you can just replace it. There’s no pump, so you have to have a way to hang it and use gravity as your pump, but that’s really not hard. Propping it on the top of your van would probably do. And there really nothing to break that way. You can always sit or stoop over to do your hair if you’re tall.

Hello, and welcome to van life. It’s always one step at a time. Shower issue, Walmart sells a 5 gallon black shower bag! No moving parts no power necessarily. Gravity fed works great. Personal recommendation buy two bags,Fill bags wherever convenient and let them sit out in the sun will get surprisingly hot. Easy on off valve right by the showerhead my wife and daughter were able to shower with one 5 gallon bag each, and then showered just like you do your dishes. Another great thing about the shower bags is if your water tank is empty or low Bring one home and you’re able to do your dishes in hot water from solar power
Pourable and composting toilets, they are a very expensive joke a bad joke that is! 5 gallon bucket with the toilet seat mounted plastic trash bag with maybe two or 3 cups of Kitty litter dispose of waste in plastic bag as soon as possible! This will cut down on poop and P accidents! Wish you all the bus who knows maybe one day we will meet on the road 👍

I would suggest trying to find a solar shower you could hand from the back of the van or a tree which is powered by gravity rather than a pump. I haven't used one but my cousin has and they said it worked well.

here is a tip we used to do when traveling on the road with the circus. Wear those rubber disposable gloves when dealing with the toilet or dumping the grey and blackwater. . Also wear disposable gloves when changing the oil or any event that is dirty or filthy. When finished throw the gloves away. It is almost impossible to get the smell of black water off your hands. Wear disposable gloves.

From friends who have been, it’s worth reading up before you go so you are prepared to have an open mind for whatever might happen. It’s the burning man for a reason. It’s not a tea party. And make sure you get a bike before you go in. You can donate it when you leave to kids or people who would be highly grateful for it and without the bike, you’ll struggle to get around.

Not sure just how PC it is, but when my wife and I were living on the road we had a toilet like yours. I had no issues dumping it into a Porta Jon. There is no substitute for real indoor plumbing, and if you are living in a van or RV you really don't want gray and black water sloshing around. It just gets nastier every day. Just found your channel and am super impressed with it, but as a man, I could never keep anything as clean as you do! I really REALLY miss living on the road and all over the country and hope to get back out in my older T1N Sprinter soon.

Then just suction it out with one of those toilet suction things (I don’t know) 😂 I’ve seen this done before by my dad which works pretty well, butttt just in case u don’t want anything bad happening probably don’t do it. Just a suggestion for the future

    Nature's Head Composting Toilet.
Research it. The channel *Gone With The Wynns* has the best reviews on it. I have a Nature's Head Composting Toilet. It's not gross at all. And for one person, you only have to change the compost about once every 90 days.
Will be the best investment you have made into the van. Trust me.
Even after you meet your new 6'2" boyfriend at Burning Man, who won't fit in your bed, he will only increase your compost dumps to once every 45 days.

    Two hints...
1: You can get free water at basically any decent truck stop when you pull around back to the truck lanes. Since you have a sprinter, you need diesel anyway, making topping off with water every time you fuel up a no brainer.
You might have to bring your own short piece of hose, they may have a spigot but the hose may not be there.
2: get a gallon jug of Odoban from Sam's,Costco or Amazon.
OdoBan Disinfectant Odor Eliminator and All Purpose Cleaner Concentrate, 1 Gal, Original Eucalyptus www.amazon.com/dp/B06X6LVKKX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WFkrCbNV65ACE
This stuff is awesome at keeping down an odor… It kills mold and viruses and can be used in laundry as well as on hard surfaces. You could put some in the black water tank of your toilet to keep it from getting stinky.
    Many many uses...

It should turn since it seems the working portion of the key is all in its place. Stop where you would normally pull the key out. Then take a sharp pointy tip of a knife, a pocket knife. Press the point in and on the broke key and carefully pry out the broken key it should remove as you pry it. Hope that helps.

Amazon takes a big cut out of every sale if they are storing the items for the sellers. That's how Amazon can do prime shipping for a lot of items. Probably why they wanted you to buy directly from them. Never trust that line again. Amazon had good return policies and it doesnt have anything to do with the seller if it's within the return time frame.

You should switch to a separating, composting toilet. That's what I use. The solid waste goes into a bag with coco-core or similar biodegradable all natural, composting materials, the liquid goes into a different tank. Dumping then is so much easier and cheaper. The solid waste goes into the garbage and the liquid gets poured into a toilet and flushed. Also, after you go each time a little water mixed with vinegar in a spray bottle rinses out the separator and takes the smell with it. So much easier than what you have. You can spend a grand on a natures head composting toilet, OR make one yourself. So much easier!
