Today's video is a bit different as I will show you a behind-the-scenes of how I created a stylized portrait of Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) using a technique I like to call "sculpting with colors."
I hope this type of video can help you feel more comfortable with your own drawing experiments by showing you that you really have to trust the process. You'll notice I was really struggling finding the sweet spot for this stylized portrait; for most of the video, Jenna looked like some sort of a creepy doll, until, almost at the end, I finally switched everything to a semi-realistic cartoony face.
All of that to say, if you're not a fan of what you're drawing right out of the gate, you're not alone! Keep at it and it'll get better 🤍

HOOOOLY FUCK, that's an insane final result. To be honest, I didn't even know you were THIS good at art. When artists usually adapt a very, very stylized art style, the question is always how their ability to see and copy really is. But you're actually good at everything. I wouldn't mind seeing tutorials, which explain this process, because this is stuff is a whole another level of art IMO. Simple shapes and basic colors are one thing, but when we start talking about realism, values and form rendering, that's where my brain starts melting. Again, amazing result!

What you said is inherently untrue. Usually good/top notch artists with very stylized art styles have the fundamentals of art so down pat, that realism and referencing imagery to recreate is easy peasy. Just takes time and patience.
For me it’s the opposite. This is good but „realistic“/ photocopied art like this doesn’t rlly impress me. It’s rlly good on a technical level but … emotionless, it’s just an exact copy of what u visually see. Her stylised art is way more impressive to me.

A lot of people seem to have this belief that you need all of the best equipment and all these fancy brushes to create some incredible work. Reality is, you just start drawing. Develop your skills and eventually, with a single brush, you can get results like this. Insanely good result all the same. XD

Yes! Before starting UA-cam a couple of years ago, my main thing was drawing realistic portraits with traditional coloring pencils 😊 I'm not really doing tutorials about this as I feel my teaching skills are not good enough yet to explain everything that goes into it, but hopefully I'll get there soon!

The shading and coloring process was really good. As far as facial structure goes. I'd say you did great. The one things that throws me off is the eye to bang ratio. The bangs practically sit on her eye lids in the reference photo. In the final result it appears that the eyes overall have been nudged a bit further down her facial structure, rather than aligning with the bangs a bit higher up. It makes the glare turn into more of a doll-like stare. Again this was really good; To see how you went about the process of breaking down her figure to build your foundation. Simply delightful😊

I would love another portrait tutorial but this time doing something more like you did here (and like I see on other speed paint demos) where the majority of the painting is done on a single layer so that the liquify tool can be used. Never found a tutorial for something like that which actually worked for me but you're my favorite procreate teacher so I'm sure you could make it work.

I recently bought like 3 of your brushes pack but after trying 2 hours to recreate one of tour tutorials I gave up lol, after seeing this video it makes me want to give it a go again, I had my iPad collecting dust for a while so I’m trying to make the most of out it.

To be completely transparent, I filmed this video 3 times because I was not happy with the final result 😅 So it's really all about practice and trying over, and over, and over again. I'm still not fully satisfied with the result, but I believe that's a normal part of the learning/progression curve. I might do a video about that actually! Yes, one layer :) I usually use a lot of layers as well, but I think it's good to practice a more "painterly" style from time to time!
