A reminder: The trains used between Prague & Munich have changed a bit since I made this video, but you can see photos of what the trains are like now, as well as prices, tips & how best to buy tickets at www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/munich-to-prague-by-train.htm
You may be interested to know that there has been a severe train accident with several casualties at the route couple of weeks ago, prompting the Czech government to finalize preparations for expansion and modernization of the railway line between Domažlice and German borders. God knows it's been too late decades ago. This oldest, one-rail cross-border part of the track suffered from having been neglected by the Communist regime (it had to cross the Iron Curtain and it was not meant to be used by regular travellers, who were forbidden to leave the country) and its current state was always meant to be a temporary solution. Hopefully, things will get better and safer in the coming years. The good news is that the route between Prague and Pilsen has become significantly faster in the last five years, benefitting from extensive repairs as well as the currently longest railway tunnel in the Czech Republic.
Hi Mark: I live in America and I found your website so helpful navigating my way through the UK and Europe. I'm thrilled to have found your You Tube Channel. Keep traveling I'll be watching!
The civilised way to travel indeed, particularly when it's only between two European cities. I just cannot understand how some (many!) people prefer to take the bus or plane for such a short distance as is the case between Munich and Prague, lower price notwithstanding.
Now you can so you should. Czech railway have very dense net, and cheap tickets, so you can travel a lot here. And most tourist walking trails start at train stations. Use mapy.cz for tourism here, much better than google.
What platform is the ceske drahy train on. I've been munich for a week now and I have not seen a cd train yet. I taking off tommorow. I'm supposed to be on a cd train at 843 Am. I've seen db bob Alex trains there.
The civilised way haha Just for that I've decided to check this video. I'll be putting different comments while I'll be watching the video. :) Ah! Those sounds in Praha station brought me great memories. May I ask how much does the ticket cost? I really liked the views crossing the river. When I've travelled to Praha from Bratislava I guess we arrived from the other side... =( It's always nice to have the possibility of having lunch in your own seat, but I think I prefer to go to the restaurant car haha That building in Plzen, was the train station? If yes... it looks really nice! I love those green forest. Even more to watch them from the train. :)
I’m catching the train from Munich to Prague in a few days. I just paid around 9-10€ (one way)! And booked it yesterday, so just a few days in advance. Lufthansa’s direct flights would have cost me almost 500€ (return), haha xD (I always take the train on that route) Yes, the trains from Bratislava arrive from the other side at the main station (hl.n.), coming from north-east into the station. The crossing of the river is on the south-west side of the city centre, so only trains from Munich and the western part of the Czech Republic are crossing the river there.
Another nice video, lovely relaxing Sunday afternoon viewing. On the re-upload - I've also fallen foul of this before, it is very frustrating when you notice a missing / wrong title!
oh wow, how nice the connection was back then with bistro and everything. Nowaday there's no bistro, the train is always crowded and known for running even HOURS late, never arriving at Munich and terminating somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night...
I've been in Munich for a week now. I've I have not once seen a ceske drahy train stationed here yet. I have one I'm taking tommorrow at 843 Am. It says on ticket munich hbf. I just don't want to miss my train.
@@seat61 Is this information on the above link up to date? If I take Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket then from Plzen I can take a ticket from within the train without any fine?
when buying online ticket from czk railways, does seat reservation included or you sit anywhere in train? or do you need to buy seat reservation separately?
Very good brief description outside and inside EC Franz Kafka. Btw1: Was the ice cold beer tasty for you? Btw2: Tankard seems very small. Do you remember volume?
But it kind of sucks when the AC doesnt work in summer - happens to me twice (out of two journeys) this year! Also the 1st class looks different now with some older carriages.
Yes. Though consider www.bahn.de/en clicking Add intermediate stops and entering via Dresden, to get an all-train option via the scenic Dresden-Prague route.
There are several options to cross the border, you could go via Dresden, as Mark said, or via Cheb and Karlovy Vary, or if you're visiting the south of the Czech Republic, change at Plattling and Bayerisch Eisenstein for Plzen. For regional transport, Bavaria or Saxony and Northern Bohemia have a joint ticket that's interesting (the Bayern-Böhmen- or Sachsen-Böhmen-Ticket, a variation on the German Ländertickets). Local tickets can be a little cheaper, especially with the Czechs, but you're spared of the hustle to go to the counter each time, trying to explain where you want to go.
1st class on these Czech trains is usually full of Americans because everyone else know there's literally no difference between 1st and 2nd (except maybe a free coffee) :D
Samo762 Completely untrue. Prague - Brno and Prague - Ostrava routes are often full in first class and certainly not because of Americans. Plenty of locals use it, it's much less crowded and peaceful.
Ok in May im going from Munich to Prague then im going from Prague to Berlin by train. Is it really best to book in advance and if so then by how much?
I prefer to not, the price does not differ that much and I have the freedom to ride another day or hour. Like it was raining a lot so you missed prague castle visit, so you want to make up for it but train is leaving...
nice for the odd penny piching tourist to be actually using that connection. For the rest its sub-par rolling stock at high prices like the 1h30 trip to Regensburg for 23€. Because of EU wide bidding for regional lines they are now a player in domestic services within Bavaria allowed to charge the standard rates mandated by the regional (state subsidised) transport network wherin one would expect modern trains like the ones operated by DB. I don't mind clunky waggons from the seventies and presumably underpaid personel as long as they're priced accordingly (like Flixtrain who are doing a real good job).
1) electrification from Prague ends in Pilsen, so change for a diesel one 2) In Schwandorf, there is a change of direction 3) in Regensburg, German electrification starts and the direction is changed once more, so change for an electric one

In December 2017, this train (and other trains from Prague to Munich) was renamed to Západní expres (in English: West side express)

How much time does the train take to Munich? What time did you arrive there? Great vid. I might go to these places next year.

der Bahnhof Schwandorf, hat eine gute Infastruktur :-) bester Bahnhof an dieser Strecke von Praha nach München !

Seat reservation is optional, if you don't make one you sit in any unreserved seat you like.
You didn't go to Munich! You got off the train in Regensburg!
Well spotted!
Could one stay seated during the locomotive's change?Excellent video as always
Of course - and most people did. I just wanted to stretch my legs and get a few shots...
Very good brief description outside and inside EC Franz Kafka.
Btw1: Was the ice cold beer tasty for you?
Btw2: Tankard seems very small. Do you remember volume?
The beer was great, tankard big enough. Slightly less than a British pint, a lot more than a Dutch biertje...
Is it the same train from Prague to Munich? or Do I have to drop off at Pilsener train station to switch trains?
It's direct
@@seat61 tks
Are the second class open seating and second class compartments the same price?
Yes.

why so many loco changes
Stephen Hyland the Czech Republic has another type of rail electrification than Germany, and building a multi systems loco would be very expensive
1) electrification from Prague ends in Pilsen, so change for a diesel one
2) In Schwandorf, there is a change of direction
3) in Regensburg, German electrification starts and the direction is changed once more, so change for an electric one
I'm not sure either, but I don't think electrification is different between Czech Republic and Germany.
