Those of us who remember the drama of the old Gotthard Tunnel route through the high Alps will find this a disappointment, now that the most scenic hour has become 20 minutes in the new Gotthard Base Tunnel. But as the video shows, those who don't know what they're missing will find it a scenic and enjoyable journey on excellent trains, past lovely Swiss & Italian lakes.

This is fantastic. I took the train from Zurich to Lugano and back again. It's very fast. You can go there just for the day. I've never seen the way from Milan though. Wonderful.

Another excellent video, thank you. We went the (literally) scenic route on the Bernina Express up to Zurich. (Well, Milano to Tirano on a 70's era train with no air conditioning, then Tirano to Chur on the Bernina, then Chur to Zurich.) This, however, seems to have been almost as picturesque as ours. What really stood out though (at 0:45 ) was the VERY limited amount of baggage storage space at the end of the carriage. It was similar on the Bernina though at least there was some open unmarked space near the end of the carriage where bags could be laid. Even my beloved Frecciarosa has overhead racks where moderate sized cases could be stored. I don't know whether it's a Swiss thing or what. I did notice that there were very few people lugging suitcases at the station at the end, so it may well be that the tourists use the scenic services and the EuroCity is more commonly used by business types. (Just a guess.)
My main disappointment about the Bernina (and you certainly won't get this on the Eurocity either since it's not compatible with the high speed approach ) is that while there were big panoramic windows to admire the view, there were no "open" carriages.
On the NZ Transalpine (Christchurch to Greymouth) there's a carriage with no windows (as in, just big holes in the carriage walls, open to the air) that you can wander up to if you want to take shots unimpeded by the internal reflections of the glass. Yes, I froze my little hands off not to mention some other parts of my anatomy, but it was worth it. The same would be true of a trip up to Zurich. There's no such thing as bad scenery or low prices in Switzerland.
Lovely video and such wonderful scenery! I like the absence of voice-over and hearing the in-carriage chatter etc. Really wets the appetite.

Travelled through Milano Centrale in June 2014 on way back to the UK from Lake Garda and found it an amazingly beautiful station, but a rather threatening experience. As fast as we were putting our luggage on to the luggage racks in the SBB Pendolino to Bern and Basel, there were gangs of male and female thieves trying to distract us so they could steal it. Your video suggests there is better security there now with a ticket check to access the platforms. Took a train through the new Gotthard tunnel for the first time last week (from Bellinzona to Zurich) - great experience. Travelled from Chur to Bellinzona by Postbus through the San Bernadino pass and tunnel, then by TILO FLIRT from Bellinzona to Locarno for lunch and back, then returned to Chur via Zurich. A fabulous day out but very tiring!

Stas Bz Unfortunately my opinion is not da same as yours. When i was in Milan in may, Milan is a dusty n ugly city. Foods r awful. They have no favour.

Stas Bz Lots of hungarians say that Budapest is dusty. But i was there a couple of times, n i think Budapest n Debrecen r two beauriful cities, unlike Miskolc.

No, this is the Gotthard, Milan-Bern would be the Simplon Tunnel then Lotschberg route.
