500w 36v Front Wheel Ebike Build by an Ebike Noob

  • My first attempt at an ebike build. There's a lot of information out there, a lot of which I found confusing. I wanted to keep it simple so I went for a front wheel drive kit from Ebay. 500w was the max power i wanted on the front wheel and with a 10s 37v lipo battery it cruises happily at 25mph on the flat. With a 36v Bottle Battery it will cruise along at 21-22mph which is fine.
    I forgot to mention that the kit comes with a pedal assist sensor which I didn't fit because I wanted it to be throttle only.
    The controller is fine with the 10s Lipo so I'm going to try 11s and 12s to find out how quick it can go. I'll update with the findings.

    With 9,000 miles of touring and 2 years as a bicycle messenger I can say that going 25 mph in city/village traffic on a bicycle is something I will not do. This video makes me sure that the 500 watt kit I just ordered is more than powerful enough to meet my pedal assist needs etc. And possiably use on cross country tour. I can pedal miles of city traffic to get to medical appointments but I have become to tired to pedal back, and I can't stand that stop and go of city bus. I am old and do not choose to own a car for financial/environmental reasons, plus my using a bicycle has apparantly kept me alive when I should be dead according to the doctor, so I will use the pedal assist or more returning to home. I am glad I found this video, thanks.
    The reason I would not go fast in city traffic is because, the only defense a bike rider has against stupid drivers, parked car drivers suddenly opening their car doors in front of you, and drivers not looking for bicycles is the quick manuverability and short stopping distance of a relatively slow speed bicycle. Edit: I have built same 500 watt Ebike kit (different brand but same kit without LCD) use three 12volt 10AH SLA (heavy at 221/2 pounds) batteries, and also am waiting for soft pack 36volt 14AH (6 pounds) lithium ion battery (1/2 cost of hard shell incased) to carry as backup. So I can be sure to get back from where the SLA batteries take me. Also installed self contained PAS sensor. Everything not test driven yet. Will edit after test run.

      YUKI INU Yes, I agree with you. Situations change so rapidly in the urban environment (pedestrians crossing unexpectedly, cars turning unpredictably) that anything over 25kph (approx. 15mph) is dangerous. I don't own an ebike, just a road bike, and I prefer to wait until I am on a quiet country road before pedalling at speed.

      Tomas O Maonaigh Yes, I hope riders with less experience than us will take what we say very seriously. It may save thier lives someday. Also obey all traffic laws! Don't do stupid things that give car drivers a reason to hate us.

      I feel quite the opposite then you do. By following your logic, lets avoid buying motorbikes as well. Since they are too fast for the city as they go above 25kph right?
      This logic is flawed. In fact, if you have the head on your shoulders, it's safer for you to do 40 kph in the city, as that way you can stay in the general flow of cars, matching their speed, and not be the douche who slows everyone down. Slow biker, presents much more danger in the traffic.

      I believe it's about being cautious on particular situations. I always slow down when I see chances of crashing, like no having full visibility of my environment or seeing drivers inside parked cars that could possibly open their car's door, but when I see no danger at all then it's not bad to go full speed.

    Hi Richard, I've just built one of these and converted a brand new Calibre 2 Cubed hard tail mountain bike in to an e-bike. I'm an electrical engineer with 42 years experience and also have bit of mechanical experience as well. I have a fully legal Cube Cross Hybrid Pro with a Bosch CX Performance Line motor so I know a bit about how e-bikes work.
    The build, from an electrical point of view is very simple and would be easy for anyone to do. I have pedal assist and thumb throttle installed. The difficult bit was making the wheel fit in to the fork drop outs and getting the hydraulic disk brake installed. It can be done but I've had to file down the brake caliper and the fork leg to make things fit.
    The other issue I have with this conversion kit, is that there is no power control in PAS mode, not much in throttle mode either. In PAS mode the motor runs on after you stop peddling which is potentially dangerous.
    As a cost effective e-bike conversion, it's great, but only if you have the mechanical engineering skills to make things fit.
    This is not a fast kit and won't get you noticed by the police in the UK. It will only reach a maximum speed of around 20 mph on level ground while pedalling. Uphill ascents are much slower and will drop you down to 12 mph. My road legal bike will out perform this kit build in any conditions.
    In conclusion, this is a very cheap way of converting your normal bike and about 75% less cost than my legal e-bike.
    As performance is subject to things like rider weight, I'm 6' 1" and 100 kg.
    Great video, stay safe and enjoy your riding.

      Thanks for a great and well thought out comment! It's a very down and dirty way to convert a bike. Nothing like some of the very sophisticated bikes available these days. But for me it's cheap and fun and if overvolted it's very quick. It can achieve 30 mph without pedal assist and will happily cruise along at 25mph on the flat without pedal assist. Enjoy your riding whatever you ride.

    Love your video and thank you for your insights. I too am relatively new, 6 months, to e-bikes having being motor cyclist in my youth , now in my 60’s, and a reluctant car driver due to its high cost, low average speed across town, and environmental impact. The 250w 24v 8Ah bike I bought I found too limited in speed ( not keeping up with cycle lane speeds I.e being overtaken by all but the slowest cyclist), range (10 miles with pedal assist), and low torque. I live on a hill and it struggled to get me back up. So I bought and installed a 350w 36v outlet 10Ah kit. Now the speed is about average in the cycle lane, range is about 20miles ( so less range anxiety) and torque gets me up the hill smoothly with out a struggle. So I was a happier bunny. But.. there are times when you need that extra boost e.g getting some clear space away from the lights so I installed a second 48v, 10Ah battery and battery blender module for safe connection of 2 batteries with different charges and I think I’ve found the sweet spot for me. Range and power when you need it. I have to agree, at my age at least 25mph on a bike would be too high up the speed/risk ratio for comfort. Having to contend at that speed with pedestrians stepping off the curb to my left, faster bikes and car overtaking or trying to cut left i front of me would not, for me feel safe. I think.. 20mph ( I.e not faster than cyclist do anyway ) with 350-500w for the extra torque to smooth out head winds and hills should do it😅

    A good build and most sensible practical and interesting comments in this thread for all E Bikers. good advise on points of very unrealistic UN Laws that endanger the rider as to power. When you buy a car it doesn't mean your going to boot it to maximum speed unless your a lunatic. Riders need reserve power for uphill climbs otherwise risk burning the motor out that's common sense something which is lacking in most all UK Laws.

    Nice, but of course completely illegal. UK law limits power to 250W and yours is 500W. UK law also does not allow a thumb or twist grip throttle, as you's has. This means if you have an accident it is automatically your fault as you are riding illegally. If you hit anyone, they can automatically sue for large sums, again because you are at fault for riding an illegal vehicle. It's as if the legislators are determined to keep everyone in cars.

    I have a 1500w front hub I just bought and Im having the EXACT SAME clearance issues, having to file down the mounting bolts on the hub motor to seat into the front forks.
    However it seems that I have even LESS clearance for disk brakes, Im exploring the manual disk brake kits available but with the shape of the hub motor enclosure its looking marginal at best for accomodating... I may have to get very involved and fabricate my own mounting solution or my own brake assembly as I refuse to have anything other than two working disk brakes on something capable of 70kmh/hr lol.
    But glad to see Im not the only one overcoming issues with these builds amongs the sea of "Easy e-bike conversion in 1 hour" videos.

    • @richardhanson2331
      @richardhanson2331  4 роки тому

      No problem, you don't need a 1000w battery as such. For something like this you need at least a 36v 5000mah battery. On this build it works out about 1 mile range per 1000mah of battery capacity. Pedal assist comes with the kit. If you install it the motor will kick in and assist when you pedal. If you dont install it you can run with throttle only with no need to pedal. of course you can still pedal f you like with this set up

Front wheel drive changes the feel of steering slightly and when signalling I am very cautious....expect I'll get used to it soon! We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!

    Initial response: Got this bike for my friend. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ Delivery was fast. And the friend was surprised I would order it when she had never suggested she wanted anything but the pedal bike she had. She has now ridden the bike two times and gives it a 10 and says it is very fun. We have some hills in our town that are very challenging to climb on a typical bike. But tonight she went up with the pedal assist and loved it. I was way behind on my standard bike, huffing and puffing. Now she is no longer lagging behind me. This thing is powerful enough that a person could go around town without any pedaling. She likes to get some exercise so on flat ground she hits the red button to turn off pedal assist and only uses the twist throttle when she's in a tough spot. The bike looks good. It is really a very nice bike for the friend. Now for me, when I get an electric bike, I'm twice her size and will be looking for a bigger watt motor and battery. But this one is just wonderful for my friend. I am happy with this purchase.

    Thanks for the detailed review of this kit. I just received mine today (still in the box not opened). I purchased it as an alternative to using my car in sunny days and due to the many parking restrictions here in Brighton. The thing that makes me go for such a kit and 500w hub is due to the many hills we have here and I hope this hub can deal with them . I know for certain that a 250w one will be useless over here and my options was limited between 500w or 750w but the later Will be too much faster on flat and I am not really looking for speed 15/20 MPH is very satisfying for a middle age man😉. Thank again for the review and if you have any new tips/ ideas of a suitable reasonable price frame I should consider to go with this hub? Regards

    I have just ordered a 1000 watt ebike front hub like yours, Hope it will all be OK. My question is should I try 3 or 4 12 volt lead acid batteries (wired in SERIES right?) to get good performance and range, or should I get the all singing and dancing (probably £80 - £100 ) more modern Lithium polymer solution (obviously lighter) I use the Lithium batteries a lot in model drone's etc. I have noticed they don't always last that long in terms of life cycles' (at least you have to treat them with kid gloves and not over drain them etc.
    what would you recommend. Also I have ordered a 26inch Hub and my bike is a 27.5 inch wheel, I am just hoping it will fit in the drop out (in terms of width) I don't think the fact that it is 26 inch and my bike is 27.5 inch will make much difference (probably just academic) If it don't fit I guess I will just get a cheap mountain bike that it will fit into rather than send the thing all the way back to China!!!
    Anyway my friend, please give me any advice you can as I want to get this right and have a really enjoyable first e-bike experience as I can see you have. I can't wait for the kit to arrive - I am really excited about this project!!! kellyrobert605@gmail.com

    • @richardhanson2331
      @richardhanson2331  4 роки тому

      Hi Robert, hope your build is going well. The Lead Acid batteries make an already heavy bike very heavy indeed. If budget allows I would go for a lithium ion pack for weight and practicality. As you mention Li-po's are far more sensitive to abuse and I have puffed 2 sets by over draining or leaving fully charged for long periods of time. 2.6 inch wheels should fit fine in a 27.5 frame. Might alter the geometry of your bike look a bit odd if you put the 26 on the front and 27.5" on the back.

Not sure if I need a certain battery to pair with that. I can get a 12S 44.4v for $269. Is that too much power? Not enough? Good price? Just... wrong? Not looking to go superfast, but I'm 260 lbs. It's mainly based on Li-ion batteries but it explains how many volts and mah you might need for different configurations which can easily be applied to Li-po batteries. The big differences between li-po and Li-ion are that lipo are more volatile and not as straight forward to charge.
