Dell m115hd Projector Disassembly and DMD Chip Replacement

I bought this broken projector from ebay with the intention of replacing the DMD Chip which I assumed was faulty. I fixed the fault by accident just by disassembling and reassembling the projector. I ordered a replacement DMD chip in anticipation of the repair. DMD's are notorious for failing so i;ll keep hold of the replacement in case it fails in future.

Just successfully performed this repair. The DMD chip came from eBay. They go for ~$50-80 (reclaimed, new). On the back side of the chip there appear to be a thermal pad. Eyeballing it it's probably 0.5mm (the type you use for SSD/power supply/memory...etc, I'm not 100% sure on the thickness). Cut the pad to the same size as the rectangular step on the black heatsink, You will most likely need a sharp knife to separate the clear films from both sides of the pads. Apply it to the heatsink side for ease of alignment. ONE thing to look out for: If the ribbon cable came off during the disassembly. It is held on via ZIF connectors(pull latch) on either side. The exposed contacts faces away from the brown latch. IMPORTANT to note that there is a 'Main board' and 'Daughter board' side of the cable. It makes an electrical difference, so connecting it backwards results in 3 orange lights as soon as you plugin the unit!

Hi, The shed is over 6 years old now and there have been no problems with condensation. Though we currently have a problem with the corners separating due to some heavy shelves sagging over time and leaning on the walls. Overall it's been fantastic and I would definitely have another one. They do not cope well with any pressure on the walls. That's my only negative. I will put some corner pieces of PVC in the corners to pull them back together and it should be good for many more years.

Video is great. I got my Halo opened up to find that the plastic around the focus motor bracket screw holes had fractured/broken away. I'm not sure the bracket is glue-able as it so small and fiddly around the screws. I've had a quick search for Halo spares in the hope I can source a new bracket. No luck so far. I guess I have nothing to lose ref glueing the bracket if I cant find a spare bracket..Any suggestions would be gratefully received for 1, spares ideas, and 2, a suitable glue to use. Cheers

I found a small crack in the motor mount and used some two part epoxy to secure it. I think it's a weak point in these projectors. That part is subject to forces from the motor, large heat variation and knocks and bumps due to it being a portable projector. I think failure of this part is why a lot of these projectors develop this problem. From reading other peoples experiences, they seem to fail after about 18 months - 2 years of ownership. Good luck in your repair attempt.

Richard- your video helped bring my projector to life again. After a fall the focus on the projector would not work-so much so that I could not see the screen. After following your instructions I figured out that the plastic casing surrounding the mechanism that turns the focus had broken off. I managed to glue it together and it worked. Thanks so much-you saved me a lot of money. Love this projector!

Thank you very much for the video. The focus stopped working after I accidentally drop my projector on my carpet. I followed your steps opened it up twice. First time I hand adjusted the camera to the back, second time moved the wheel back and forward a few times then left it in the middle. Sadly still not working. 😢 It actually only focused for one second in the first 10 seconds after I turned the projector on when the auto focus was working on itself. Started with blur then clear(focused) then back to blur again and stayed that way. Using manual focus, the focus won’t change despite can hear the wheel is working inside. Left the projector on for more than 10 mins still no changes. The camera stopped auto adjusting after the first 10 seconds and it only on focus for 1 sec during the auto adjusting process then back to unfocused. Any chance you could know where the problem may be? Much appreciated.

Hi, I noticed the first time that I tried this I had a similar problem. It might me worth trying to set the focus wheel in to the far end of its travel and see if that works. I also noticed that the mount which holds the focus motor is quite fragile, so it's worth checking that for any weakness or cracks along with motor mounting screws. As this will affect the amount of force applied to the focus gear on the lens. Good luck!

I haven't replaced the DMD chip on this model. They are usually a similar design. The DMD is usually under a heatsink near the LED's. The main thing is, to be careful not to let any dust into the light engine assembly or get smudges on the replacement DMD chip. Good luck if you take it on.

J'ai retiré les fils de l'une des fiches par accident parce qu'elle était trop serrée, mais j'ai réussi à les remettre dans la fiche plus tard. J'espère que cela clarifie les choses. Thanks for the great guide, Richard! I've managed to have it opened, cleaned it up a bit and manually rotated the focus motor up and down a couple of times. If this problem happens again I will try to have the focus fixed on one generic position after which I'm thinking to just leave the motor disconnected (to avoid parking the focus in an out of focus position).

@@EDenDen18 When you get to the focus motor move the focus cog with your fingers to the opposite end of it's travel from where you found it. That should solve your problem. I noticed that the top mount for the motor is made of quite brittle plastic, and with the heat variation of a projector, and the knocks and drops these portable projectors can be subjected to, I wouldn't be surprised if this is why some folks are having focus problems after a couple of years of ownership.

Initial response: Got this bike for my friend. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ Delivery was fast. And the friend was surprised I would order it when she had never suggested she wanted anything but the pedal bike she had. She has now ridden the bike two times and gives it a 10 and says it is very fun. We have some hills in our town that are very challenging to climb on a typical bike. But tonight she went up with the pedal assist and loved it. I was way behind on my standard bike, huffing and puffing. Now she is no longer lagging behind me. This thing is powerful enough that a person could go around town without any pedaling. She likes to get some exercise so on flat ground she hits the red button to turn off pedal assist and only uses the twist throttle when she's in a tough spot. The bike looks good. It is really a very nice bike for the friend. Now for me, when I get an electric bike, I'm twice her size and will be looking for a bigger watt motor and battery. But this one is just wonderful for my friend. I am happy with this purchase.

We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!

Love your video and thank you for your insights. I too am relatively new, 6 months, to e-bikes having being motor cyclist in my youth , now in my 60’s, and a reluctant car driver due to its high cost, low average speed across town, and environmental impact. The 250w 24v 8Ah bike I bought I found too limited in speed ( not keeping up with cycle lane speeds I.e being overtaken by all but the slowest cyclist), range (10 miles with pedal assist), and low torque. I live on a hill and it struggled to get me back up. So I bought and installed a 350w 36v outlet 10Ah kit. Now the speed is about average in the cycle lane, range is about 20miles ( so less range anxiety) and torque gets me up the hill smoothly with out a struggle. So I was a happier bunny. But.. there are times when you need that extra boost e.g getting some clear space away from the lights so I installed a second 48v, 10Ah battery and battery blender module for safe connection of 2 batteries with different charges and I think I’ve found the sweet spot for me. Range and power when you need it. I have to agree, at my age at least 25mph on a bike would be too high up the speed/risk ratio for comfort. Having to contend at that speed with pedestrians stepping off the curb to my left, faster bikes and car overtaking or trying to cut left i front of me would not, for me feel safe. I think.. 20mph ( I.e not faster than cyclist do anyway ) with 350-500w for the extra torque to smooth out head winds and hills should do it😅

I have noticed condensation in the winter but the Electronics, Bikes, General Tools and Gardening Equipment are fine in there and haven't developed any rust or problems. Some very delicate fine tools have developed a little rust over the years but nothing more than you would see in any shed. I don't use it for extended periods in the winter just for storage so it's completely stock apart from the solar. No insulation or heating is installed. The solar works great in summer, but I hook it up to a much smaller battery in the winter months just to keep the security cameras operational. There's no where near enough energy from the panels to keep the big battery topped up in winter.

@@richardhanson2331 Hi thx for the reply, yeah i get light condensation on the roof. i`ll monitor the situation. cheers again, lovely shed.. victron stuff. no nonsense!! quality!

@@kool-k-kel There must be a fairly easy way to manage the condensation but it's never bothered me enough to do anything about it. The Victron stuff is nice but way over the top for my use case :) I just like nerdily monitoring the solar yield and battery charge. I made a video about a cheap easy way to remote monitor the solar system but never uploaded it. Will have to get around to uploading it.
