  • Sri Lanka has quickly become one of THE places to go to in Asia. In 2018, the number of tourists visiting Sri Lanka was over 5 times that of 2009, the year the civil war ended. This year, just as the country was welcoming more foreign visitors than ever before, Sri Lanka was hit by a series of terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of over 250 people. Weeks before this tragedy, I spent a month travelling around the country and trying to move past the tourists’ much beaten paths.
Here’s everything I think you should know about Sri Lanka if you are planning to pay this beautiful country a visit. Of course, I can’t speak for the security environment in the aftermath of the attacks, since I had already left the country. But I think these are the final years Sri Lanka will still have this level of unspoiled beauty, so I really recommend a visit, if you can :)

hello! I'm planning a holiday to Sri Lanka in August, however I'm concerned about the recent terrorist attacks that have taken place in the country. Do you think it's safe to go?

Hi! As I said in the description box, I left the country before the attacks, so I don't know the security environment firsthand. Also, as a journalist who has been in conflict zones, my risk aversion is quite low :D But let me answer your question another way: if I could, I would return to Sri Lanka anytime :) I had no safety concerns when I was there and travelled throughout the country and I don't think I would have them now. Hope that helps and do let me know what you decided!

@@lookingforastory1840 I really desire to go, so I'm inclined to ignore all the risks anyway :) However I'm still young and would go there alone, so my relatives and friends are quite concerned, since I'll be staying in Kandy and work as an international volunteer for the Green Lion association in a buddhist temple. I think I'll go despite everything and I appreciate your quick answer, thanks!

@@YonikMalik well all the people I talked to have told me that they've always been treated very warmly by the locals. I know there's a lot of political tension right now but I don't think it's right to judge an entire country and its people on the basis of such incidents

A European vlog group (UK, Belgian, Colombian combination) alleges Sri Lankans abuse Elephants. This video is full of untruth - to obtain cheap publicity. It is important to watch EBS Docs documentary about Sri Lankan domesticated elephants. No one abuses Elephants in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankans love their Elephant and consider it sacred. When there are orphaned elephants (found from jungle), mostly Buddhist temples take them up for adoption. Again, no abuse as complained by you. Chaining them - yes they are chained to contain. Elephants can go havoc and kill people like you and I. Riding on top of an elephant is fun for both the human and the Elephant. Charging $30 entrance to Sigiriya is very reasonable. It is not cheap to maintain them. How much you paid for the plane ticket and the Ministry of Crabs meal? How much they charge entrance to the British Museum?

100 euros per month, average Sri Lankans earn more than that!
