Try some silicone, or some E6000. Have all mine siliconed in and been holding up for years. If you ever have to get at the castle nut for a CV replacement the silicone or E6000 is easy to break free from the cap and rim. Peel old adhesive away then reapply. Just a few dabs will do. No need to blob it in there.
Those EBay center caps are mostly counterfeit. Probably 3D prints. They don’t fit correctly. Oem center caps are expensive. $22 each! Not 4 for $22. Buy from dealership. As you found out.
They are a fucking nightmare to replace them, because the moment you pry the flat screwdriver, you end-up peeling off the VW badge instead of popping the cap off. Not to mention that the badges come off very easily. I lost count of how many Volkswagens I've seen running with the caps, but without the VW badge on them.
Only 20 bucks wasted ?? But can you not put some tape around circumferance which will expand it the 1mm u need ??
Had similar problem.....I am tempted to think it is one of those 'deliberate' flaws...must be a nice little earner for the dealerships

My garage did nt replace the centre caps and denied it when I said they were missing after the tyres had been taken off to be changed.

I have the 17” rims exactly like yours and they use the smaller size
So frustrating. I’ve been there too.
