    There are a few different parts that could be to blame if your refrigerator isn't cooling. Your automatic defrost system may not be melting the frost off your evaporator coils. The compressor, which circulates coolant, may not be working correctly. Your evaporator fan may not be blowing cool air in your refrigerator. Or your thermistor may not be sending the correct temperature signals to your electronic control board, which controls all the major components. This video will walk you though some simple tests to help narrow down what's causing the problem and provide links to more advanced tests to figure out which part or wire needs to be replaced to get your refrigerator up and running.
    1. Check for power
    If you can’t hear your refrigerator running, check for power by opening the refrigerator door to see if the light turns on. If the light doesn’t turn on, make sure the refrigerator is plugged in and that the power cord isn’t damaged. Then make sure that the electrical outlet is working by plugging in a lamp or an appliance that makes noise like a blow dryer. If the outlet is broken, have it repaired by a qualified electrician.
    2. Check for excessive frost
    Check for excessive frost buildup on the evaporator, which can inhibit cooling. You may need to troubleshoot issues with the automatic defrost system if the evaporator is caked with frost.
    3. Enter diagnostic test mode
    Most refrigerators have a diagnostic test mode that checks refrigerator operations. Check the tech sheet for instructions. Look for it behind the bottom front grill or taped to the back of the refrigerator.
    4. Test the compressor
    Press the door switch twice to start the compressor. The control beeps twice and then the compressor should start. If you don’t hear the compressor turn on, check the start relay on the compressor.
    5. Check the evaporator fan
    To check the fan, press the door switch twice within 2 seconds and wait for the two beeps. Repeat this step 2 more times. The control beeps twice and then starts the evaporator fan. If the evaporator fan doesn't run, unplug the refrigerator and check the evaporator fan.
    6. Check the thermistor/temperature sensor
    Watch our video to troubleshoot problems with the temperature sensor.

    Your comment about the start relay and link provided to your video at 1:48 on Troubleshooting Compressor Problems in Refrigerators was all I needed to get my refrigerator working again. Many thanks for helping me save about $1,200 to replace a perfectly good refrigerator that simply had a bad relay.

      Isn’t it amazing how really expensive necessities such as, I don’t know, a refrigerator can’t even last 5 years now? I have the exact model from the video. I ran all the tests, checked for excessive frost, etc. The only way I can keep it cold is to run the diagnostic test every few hours (hopefully it keeps working until a service tech gets here 🤞)

    Freezer stopped freezing and next day fridge went hot too. I ch3cked if the coils were dirty and they were a little, cleaned up. Plugged in and you can here and see the fan kick on, lights on too. Compressor powers on, you can hear a low steady hum but it never kicks over loudly like before when it was cooling. I haven't seen a video on the french door style Kenmore elite with the freezer on the bottom.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 років тому

      The hum that you're hearing could be fans running instead of the compressor motor. If the compressor doesn't run or it runs but doesn't compress the refrigerant to cool the freezer and refrigerator, then you'll likely need to have a service technician diagnose and repair the refrigerator. Some Kenmore Elite bottom-freezer refrigerators have a compressor with a start relay. A failed start relay could be preventing the compressor from running in your refrigerator. A bad electronic control board can prevent the compressor from running in some Kenmore Elite bottom-freezer refrigerators. If you'd like to try to fix the refrigerator yourself, let us know the model number of your refrigerator and we'll try to help you with some troubleshooting and repair tips.

    Wayne HELP,
    I have a Frigidaire Refrigerator FFHT1513LW2. I had problems with a warn refrigerator, cold freezer. After querying online I replaced the Compressor Start Relay, that didn’t work, then the Defrost Timer, then the Temperature Control Thermostat, that seemed to work, but now the refrigerator is getting colder and colder. No mater where I adjust the Temperature Control Thermostat knob, even all the way to the left, the warmest setting it freezes my 2 liters, bread, etc. Is my Temperature Control Thermostat defective or what? I also get a loud snapping noise, like someone snapping their fingers loudly, ever so often. Thanks for you video.

      Check the temperature knob in the back of the freezer compartment. Set that knob to "Normal" (the middle setting) if it's not already there. If that setting is normal and the refrigerator compartment is freezing everything, then the new temperature control thermostat may be faulty.

    please help. I have this model and every few hours it makes that beep by its self. drove me crazy wondering where it was coming from. its the fridge. that exact sound you have it make during testing. any ideas please????

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 років тому +1

      Unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute and then plug it back in. That will reset the electronic control board and the beeping may stop. If that tactic doesn't work, the "door open" alarm could be sounding or the control may be in the diagnostic test mode. Make sure the refrigerator door is fully closed. If the alarm sounds with the door fully shut, test the door switch by opening the refrigerator and pressing in the door switch plunger to see if the interior light turns off. If the interior light stays on when you press in the door switch plunger, then you'll likely need to replace the door switch because the switch contacts are broken. Here's a video that shows how to replace the door switch: www.searspartsdirect.com/repair-guide/refrigerator/how-to-replace-the-light-switch-in-a-top-freezer-refrigerator.html . Unplug the refrigerator before replacing parts. If the door switch works, then the refrigerator may be in the diagnostic test mode. Press the door switch 4 times and hold the door switch on the 4th press until you hear a long beep indicating the control exited the diagnostic mode. The refrigerator may stop beeping after exiting the diagnostic mode if that mode was enabled. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know.

    Hi. We replaced the evaporator fan on our Kenmore Elite model # 795.79043.310. It is running but the fridge/freezer still isn't cooling down enough.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  6 років тому +2

      Blocked air vents can prevent the refrigerator section from cooling. Move any items blocking the supply air vent at the top of the back wall inside the refrigerator section. Also move any items covering the return air vents at the bottom of the refrigerator section.
      If the vents aren’t blocked, then the air supply damper for the refrigerator may be stuck shut. Unplug the refrigerator and replace the air damper if it won’t open to allow cold air from the freezer to enter the refrigerator section.
      A failed temperature sensor, bad control board or a problem in the automatic defrost system also can prevent the refrigerator from cooling. We recommend that you have a service technician examine and repair the refrigerator if you’re not able to find the cause of the refrigerator cooling problem on your own. You can schedule service here: www.searshomeservices.com/.

      The refrigerator section has a separate evaporator from the freezer section. An air leak into the cabinet from a leaky refrigerator door gasket could be causing excessive frost to build up on the refrigerator section’s evaporator. Excessive frost blocks cooling air passages through the evaporator fan and cooling tower in the refrigerator section.
      Check the refrigerator door seals and replace any door seal that leaks.
      If the door seals are okay, then a bad defrost heater or a failed defrost bi-metal thermostat on the refrigerator evaporator can also cause excessive frost. Here’s a video that shows how to troubleshoot the defrost system on a refrigerator: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/troubleshooting-defrost-system-problems-in-refrigerators.html. The defrost system in the refrigerator section of your unit will be different than the one shown in that video, but the basic troubleshooting tips in the video should help you test the defrost heater and bi-metal thermostat on your model.
      A failed evaporator fan (www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/WR60X10357/0046/363.html) can also prevent the refrigerator from cooling. Replace the refrigerator evaporator fan if it doesn’t run when activated by the main control board.
      If you’re not able to determine what’s causing your refrigerator cooling problem, we recommend that you have a service technician examine and repair the refrigerator. You can schedule service here: www.searshomeservices.com/.

    we have refrigerator with friger working fine, but refrigerater area isn't cooling down since few days ago. Can I simply turn it off, let all the ice melt from friger, and then power back on? This apparently worked with mini-referigerator that I have in my small room. I wonder if it will do same with big one in the kitchen.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  4 роки тому

      Yes. Turning off the refrigerator and letting the ice melt in the freezer will likely restore cooling in the refrigerator according to your symptoms. The refrigerator will probably cool normally for several days up to a few weeks (or maybe more). If the refrigerator quits cooling again, then you'll likely need to diagnose and fix a problem with the automatic defrost system in the refrigerator. Here's an article/video that describes troubleshooting tactics for a typical top-freezer refrigerator defrost system: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/article/refrigerator-wont-cool-troubleshooting-video-defrost-system-problems . You may be able to follow the tips in that article/video to figure out what's wrong in your refrigerator if it stops cooling again. Be sure that you unplug the refrigerator before accessing internal components. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know (and post the model number of your refrigerator).

    using hard start Supco RCO810 3 n 1 start on Electrolux/ Frididaire Model FRT21C5AW9

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 років тому

      Thanks for posting the model number of your refrigerator and the part number of the hard start kit that you're using. Your model uses a defrost timer and cold control thermostat to control the compressor and fans. The fans and compressor are all in the same circuit on your refrigerator. If the cold control thermostat and defrost timer are sending current to the compressor and fan circuit, then the fans should run even if the compressor doesn't start. We recommend that you unplug the refrigerator and check for continuity through the cold control and defrost timer using a multimeter. You can find the wiring diagram for your refrigerator in the owner support documents on this Frigidaire website: www.frigidaire.com/Kitchen-Appliances/Refrigerators/Top-Freezer-Refrigerator/ . Here's a video/article that shows how to check continuity: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-test-continuity-on-wire-and-electrical-parts-video.html . This video/article shows how to trace current on a wiring diagram: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/using-a-wiring-schematic-to-trace-a-current-video.html . Replace the cold control if your meter measures no continuity through that device. If your meter measures no continuity through the defrost timer, then the defrost timer could be in the defrost mode. Turn the knob on the defrost timer until you hear contacts inside the timer click and then measure continuity through the path to the compressor. If you measure no continuity through the defrost timer in the compressor run mode, then replace the defrost timer. If your multimeter measures continuity through the cold control and defrost timer, then you can check continuity through the wiring. If wiring is okay then the hard start device may not be properly or it may not be compatible with your compressor. We don't recommend replacing the compressor start relay and overload with the hard start kit that you're using. We recommend that you stick with the original parts designed for that refrigerator. Hopefully, these tips will help you fix the refrigerator. If you need more assistance, let us know.

      Check your refrigerator temperature setting and adjust it if necessary. Check to see if the evaporator fan is running in the freezer section. If the evaporator fan isn't running, you may need to replace the fan motor. If the evaporator fan is running, check the damper and return vents between the freezer and refrigerator compartments for obstructions. We hope this information helps. If you need further assistance, let us know the model of your refrigerator and additional details about the cooling problem.

    The compressor on mine is working because you can hear it but it started to defrost the bottom freezer and the top does not feel as cold as it should.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 років тому

      Check to see if the evaporator fan is circulating air in the bottom freezer as the compressor runs. A failed evaporator fan can cause cooling problems in the freezer and refrigerator sections. If the evaporator fan isn’t running, unplug the refrigerator and check the wire harness connections on the evaporator fan. Reconnect any loose wires. If the wiring connections are okay, you may need to replace the evaporator fan. If the evaporator fan runs, lack of refrigerant (Freon) or a failed compressor may be preventing the freezer from cooling as the compressor runs. A service technician would need to repair this this type of failure because the procedure requires the recovery and recharge of refrigerant. You can schedule service here: www.searshomeservices.com/ We hope these tips help. If you need more assistance, post more details and let us know the model number of your refrigerator.

      @searspartsdirect  5 років тому

      Your details seem to indicate that the compressor and both fans worked in the test mode. Check to see if the compressor starts in the test mode now that you've installed the new start device. Some Frigidaire refrigerator models have control boards that delay the start of the compressor and fans so those components may not start right away in the normal operating mode but they may work in the test mode. If the fans and compressor work in the test mode but won't work in the normal operating mode, then you may need to replace the electronic control board. We hope this general advice helps. If you need more assistance, let us know the model number of your Frigidaire refrigerator and update us with details about the cooling problem.

      Check to see if the evaporator fan is running. Check for frost buildup on the evaporator. A blocked vent between the freezer and refrigerator can also prevent the refrigerator from cooling.

      You can find tips in the owners manual (if you don't have it, you can look it up on www.searspartsdirect.com by entering the model number at the top of the homepage.) I'd start at Normal and give it 2 days to adjust.

    Hoping for some assistance w/ my Kenmore 106.62152111 top-mount. Just moved into a home with great looking Kenmore fridge. Last owner had unplugged for 6-9 months and bought about 3 years ago. Turns on and sounds like everything is fine but nothing gets cool at all. Worked great before apparently and has little dust and no damage.
    When plugged in:
    -Outlet is fine; power is no issue.
    -Compressor turns on and gets warm; can rest hand on but not cold like.
    -All fans are exposed right now; all work just fine with no dust even.
    -Temperature gauge/dial changes nothing; left on for 48 hours to test.
    -No ice build up on coils or evaporator as nothing gets cool.
    *Only sheet included is the wiring info so diagnostics is unknown
    **Haven't tested any voltage as I haven't needed to yet. Any serious electrical parts are working.
    I removed the internal wiring and parts but there is no apparent "thermistor" in this unit. I was hoping someone could verify that. None is located on the parts list as well.
    My only guess is it must be the thermostat. No apparent damage on while viewing; no dents or bends or burns though.
    Any info would be incredible. I don't mind buy the parts and doing work but right now a mini fridge isn't cutting it. A handyman is $75 just for the trip over never mind the repair and parts.
    The fridge is currently disassembled as well as all panels in the freezer to view necessary components and search for the thermistor.
    Thanks for anything from anyone!

      That model of refrigerator doesn’t have a thermistor. The temperature sensor is included with the cold control thermostat. Because the compressor runs but frost doesn’t appear on the evaporator coils when the compressor runs, one of the following failures is likely: the compressor is bad, the refrigerant has leaked out of the sealed refrigerant system or a problem such as a clog in the sealed system is preventing the refrigerator from cooling. A service technician will need to diagnose and repair those types of failures because the repair will involve the capture and/or recharge of refrigerant in the sealed system. Sealed system repairs are often costly. We recommend that you consider replacing the refrigerator instead of repairing it. Here’s a comparable new model that will likely cost about the same (or maybe even less) than repairing this refrigerator: www.sears.com/kenmore-18-cu-ft-top-freezer-refrigerator-white/p-04660412000P. If you choose to repair the refrigerator, we recommend that you schedule service by a technician here: www.searshomeservices.com/.

    ok but the relay is rattling when i shake it and Wayne on the video said that's a tell tale sign that it's fried. Do you agree?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 років тому

      The type of start relay that's shown in the video is different than the start relay that was installed on your Frigidaire refrigerator. The relay that was installed in your Frigidaire refrigerator could rattle when you shake it and not be fried.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  3 роки тому +1

      If the compressor runs and makes noise but the refrigerator isn't cooling at all then the compressor may be bad or refrigerant may have leaked out of the sealed system. You'll likely need to have a service technician diagnose and repair the refrigerator.

      Make sure no items in the refrigerator compartment are blocking air vents. The owner's manual for your refrigerator will likely indicate where air vent in the refrigerator are located. Move items away from the front of air vents in the refrigerator if they're blocking vents. If vents aren't blocked, look for a defrost system failure as shown in this video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/troubleshooting-defrost-system-problems-in-refrigerators.html . We hope these tips help. If you need more assistance, let us know the model number of your refrigerator and update us with more details about the problem (such as whether the freezer section cools properly).

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 років тому

      Your symptoms seem to indicate that the control is trying to start the compressor to initiate the cooling process but the compressor doesn't start. There's a chance that the compressor start relay is bad. A bad compressor could also be the problem that's causing the symptoms that you're describing.

    I have one double door refrigerator.... if you work continuously for a week, then there will be no cold .... If you turn off the power for an entire night and turn it on again in the morning, it will start to cool again ....

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  4 роки тому

      Your symptoms point to a failure in the automatic defrost system. Frost likely is building up on the evaporator fins because the defrost system isn't working to periodically melt the frost off those fins. After a week, enough frost builds up on the evaporator fins so that air passages through the fins are blocked and the refrigerator quits cooling. Unplugging the refrigerator for the entire night allows the frost to melt so cooling is restored the next day. Let us know the model number of your refrigerator and we'll provide some troubleshooting tips to help you resolve the issue yourself if possible. You may also consider having a service technician repair the failure.

    My sister gave me a perfectly good refrigerator no more than 2 years old but it was transported to my house lying down when it got to my house it only gets cold sporadically what can I do

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  6 років тому

      Unplug the refrigerator and let it sit idle for 24 hours so compressor oil will sink down into the compressor. Next, plug the refrigerator in and let it run for 3 days. It will likely cool sporadically for those 3 days. After letting it run for 3 days, check the cooling performance. If the refrigerator cools properly after running for 3 days, then it should be okay. If not, then you won’t likely be able to use the refrigerator.

    Hi Im having real hassle with my fridge, for a week now the freezer has been insanely cold with ice build up (didnt do that before). Fridge is warm. Took panel off back of freezer, coils look fine no ice, and fan working too blowing out super cold air. But absolutely nothing coming out of air vent in fridge. Thought it might be blocked with ice so poured some boiling water into it hoping it would clear the air vent but the water just seemed to fall out the bottom so i have no idea what is going on. Please help. Its only 2 frickin years old and i cant afford a new one :(
